  1. Best episode of the season so far. I enjoyed Ep1 and Ep2 and I didn't really get Ep3 (I did still enjoy it) for whatever reason but this episode was absolutely fantastic.

Walton Goggins was absolutely fantastic and I don't know who that woman on the lie detector was but she chimed in at all the right moments.

Kinda sad we didn't see any Dean Pelton, but I guess Pierce didn't think he really had a reason to be there. Also no Hickey which means he'll be appearing in the rest of the episodes since he's already missed the 2 episodes he isn't supposed to be in. so WOO.

All the secrets made sense for the character's and for some reason, I felt Abed was kind of.... off this episode but in a good way. On the other hand Troy was exceptionally good.

Speaking of Troy, I'm both happy we have the reason he's leaving and super sad that next week is Donald Glover's last episode.

Pierce's bequeathments were sweet, well minus all the sperm, and I felt that his impact was truly felt in this episode. He'll be sorely missed.

    9.5/10 Fantastic episode.

  2. It was...Okay. It felt like it lacked the heart I was expecting. Up until the Troy reveal I thought the episode was way too lighthearted for what they were supposed to be dealing with. The "secrets" barely qualified. I really expected more from an episode with a lie detector in play.

I don't know. Maybe I was expecting too much and hype killed it for me.

  3. wow... this ep was much like Britta's panty hawk... it made me believe in a little more magical world.....

great hilarious dialogue, unexpected sentiment and the obvious set up for Troy's impending departure..... fantastic ep for me

  4. That was pretty good! Love that Pierce left things to his friends. It was also sad.

  5. That was an amazing episode! I loved last week's episode, but this one was definitely the better.

Unlike last season's Intro to Felt Surrogacy, the secrets the characters had and the reasons why they kept them felt incredibly more true to the characters. There was some truly hilarious ones, and some sad ones. But good on you writers for making Pierce have the biggest role of the episode, without even having Chevy Chase there, at least we had Pierce's energon pod. And I guess it must be true that Pierce is dead with them all going to his funeral and seeing his body. To Pierce! May he rest in Pierce!

And I was so glad we got Pierce of Season 1 at the end with him being... well nice. It didn't happen often, but he did offer his advice and help in Season 1 more than any other and it was nice to see him be honest. Other than Abed's (which makes sense cause... well it's Pierce), what he thought of each of them and the bequeathments (aside from the sperm, although I was dying of laughter) were so wonderful. Glad they didn't forget that Britta got an Ipod Nano in 2014!

Finally, Troy. It'll suck to lose Troy next week, but regardless of how abrupt the explanation of his leaving is, it was incredibly fitting. Ever since Season 2, Troy's been trying to become his own man. Sure, like Troy said he's always wanted to be that rich, but that was so incredibly in tune with who Troy is and where he wants to be. Happy sailing Troy! I did notice it said it would only be 1 year, so if there is a 6th season, there's the possibility of your return!

  6. How amazing was Goggins in that last scene?

  7. That was a great episode and I loved the bit at the end :)

As for Troy's departure - it's sad but also quite fitting for him to head off this way. And I really do hope that the one year timescale means he'll be back in Season 6 or come back to save everyone from City College in Act 3 of the movie.

  8. Shots!!!

Absolutely fantastic scene, and a fantastic actor!

  9. Wow. I cried. That hasn't happened on this show in a long time. Really fantastic episode. I felt like Pierce was really there too. And Walton Goggins. Love it. Thumbs up, no doubt.

  10. The scene with Jeff, the scotch and the sperm... priceless! Jajaja Amazing episode! This season is awesome so far!

  11. Reasons would help...

  12. Just amazing. Really felt Pierce's presence in that episode. I just have to watch it again right now.

  13. It was a good episode, but not quite as good as some of the earlier "bottle episodes." The Pierce elements were great, as was the Lie detector lady. A lot of the secrets were minor, or natural to the characters, but honestly, Abed came off pretty sociopathic this episode- tracking the group with beacons they will not find, faking someone to be in an online relationship with Annie for the sake of getting pancakes, messing with Jeff's Netflix account, getting pissy with Annie over $86 dollars of rent money she put into a rainy day fund. He had some funny moments, but Abed was not really likable this episode.

  14. Now that I've seen it twice, I can agree on the Abed point. His normal charm was taken its sociopath limit this week. Overall though, still loved it!

  15. That was pretty great, like damn every other episode going forward will probably be a tiny be disappointing because it isn't as good as this one great.

I really don't want Troy to leave, I may say 'Cool, Cool, Cool' but much like Abed I am lying. Going to be many tears next week when he goes.

Walton Goggins was naturally amazing but loved the ending, oh lord I hope he does a comedy show post-Justified.

  16. Wow! That was perfect. Brilliant, poignant, hilarious, touching...Community is truly back.

  17. Spoiler alert: my grade for this episode will be a straight A.

  18. It's too bad that you didn't enjoy the episode. Although if Cooperative Calligraphy and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons are "rare exceptions" for you on how the group being it's own antagonist episodes can be good, then it seems likely that you wouldn't like this one. Even this was the spiritual successor of Cooperative Calligraphy, I'd say both were about even on the group being its own antagonist.

However it seems weird that you didn't find any humor (not including the antagonistic, sexual, and Abed-is-creepy jokes), because there were great one-liners that didn't have to do with any of those. Primarily they came from the group reacting to the lie detector test. The 2 that stand out to me are: Shirley - "We all know that you judgmental bitch!" and Troy - "Silence wench!" The delivery of those lines were hilarious alone.

What about when Jeff is initially being asked if he is gay, Chang silently does his "Gaaay!" line from Season 2. Or what about Troy trying to suck the air out of Pierce's energon pod and put it in a balloon. Or "Troy and Abed are in mourning." "Wait, you meant morning with a u?"

And about the polygraph, it seems weird that you'd point out the Troy giving a fake name thing as your reason for it being fake. Sure they pushed the validity of the polygraph a bit. But that one in particular, she was saying that Troy's line, "Oh, I meant to say Butts Carlton." It wasn't she was confirming what name he was going to use, only that he was telling the truth that is what he wanted to say.

I can't disagree with the Abed stuff, cause you're right. Some of the stuff pushed Abed from cute weird to scary weird.

That whole end sequence was beautiful because we got the rare Pierce where he said nice things about the group, and it was a perfect way to send him off having Goggins say all those things... while also being very Pierce and giving them all sperm. Britta getting the used ipad nano was a nice touch too cause that was said in Season 1. And I guess you could look at Troy's trip through that kind of lens. Sure it'd be difficult, but it's a show and it's an incredibly fitting and nice gesture by Pierce. Hell, Troy could just sail off the coast of Belize for a year and probably get it if he really wanted to.

But that wasn't just Pierce saying goodbye to Troy, it was Dan Harmon and the cast and crew saying goodbye to Donald Glover. Did you notice the ship Pierce wanted him to go on was named the Childish Tycoon (after Donald's rap ego, Childish Gambino)? They weren't mad that Donald decided to leave the show after 5 episodes this season. They were proud of him to make his decision to leave, and they want him to go and see the world and be his own man. It was a celebration of Donald Glover.

Don't know if any of this swayed you in any degree, but thought I'd offer it up. It is too bad you didn't enjoy the episode, but it is your opinion and I'm glad you explained why you didn't like it as opposed to some people who just say "Awful."

  19. I may be in the minority here but I didn't find this episode all that great.. it doesn't even compare with Calligraphy... that was on a whole other level, I just felt this episode had way too many charachters in 1 room for a proper interaction and the pace at which the dialogues were switched from one person to the next just didn't feel community-like, plus the Annie and Abed manipulative reveals weren't in-character so to speak... why will Annie be a hoarder for one, and why will Abed become a sociopath all of a sudden, weird yes but sociopath not so much...tracking all his group mates and what not...didnt seem right to me. Calligraphy was a definitely a better paced episode than this one and more in lines with how the characters have been portrayed as in the series.

  20. Thanks for your reply. To just go through your post bit by bit:

I loved pretty much all of Shirley's stuff in the episode. This was one of those rare episodes when her character really stood out. I don't recall Troy's "Silence wench", and I definitely didn't see Chang do his "Gaaay" line during this episode. The Troy and Abed in mourning joke would have been funny to me if I enjoyed Troy and Abed in the morning, but that bit is so played out for me now that I just don't find it or any of its variations funny any more.

Troy giving a fake name isn't the reason the polygraph seemed fake. It's just one example of something that a polygraph can't do. There were several throughout the episode. That was just the first to come to mind. (And, yes, I realize she was confirming the truth of what Troy was going to say, but that's the problem - it was a baseline question. They couldn't have been detecting lies yet at that point because they hadn't established a baseline yet. Goggins's character even confirms that those were the baseline questions shortly into the episode.)

I just feel like killing off Pierce was entirely unnecessary as is. What we got in the Season 4 finale and the Season 5 premiere were perfectly apropos send-offs. Pierce wasn't really saying anything nice that we hadn't already heard from him before. (Most of what Goggins said was just parroting things Pierce has already said in past episodes.)

I did really enjoy the iPod Nano and tiara throwbacks.

I feel like the Childish Tycoon = Childish Gambino interpretation might be a bit of a stretch. The reason the boat was called the Childish Tycoon is because Pierce was a childish tycoon. The word "tycoon" doesn't properly fit Troy or Donald Glover at all. I also don't see this as a celebration of Donald Glover since that's what next week's episode is supposed to be.

I liked the episode enough not to vote it as "Awful", but it was still one of the weaker episodes of the series to me.

  21. Wow!!Amazing episode. I am speechless!

  22. Fair enough on the Troy and abed are in mourning thing. I understand why, because it is a bit overplayed and could be annoying for some, you didn't like it. And I agree on the polygraph part. Yes it was a baseline question to establish what a person telling the truth looked like. I guess I let it go cause most show don't show it accurately.

Ya the whole killing Pierce off thing sucks, but they did it so I'm rolling with. For me they've handled it well and made some nice gestures in this episode. Sure we've seen Pierces capacity for being nice before, but it's so rare it's always nice to see.

And I guess, agree to disagree. I very much see the connection between Childish Tycoon with Donald Glover and him going off to become his own man. I know I've seen that posted on other Communtiy fan pages so it's not just me who sees that connection. Maybe not celebrating Donald Glover, cause you are right that its next week, but more of Dan and the crew saying goodbye with no bad feelings.

And thank you for taking the time to respond in a calm and clear manner. I apologize if anything is misspelled or weird in this comment cause I'm on my phone writing it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, I know it's not just you that sees the connection. I've seen plenty of other people talking about it before you mentioned it. I just haven't been swayed by any of the arguments supporting that position yet.

  24. Fair enough. Well I thank you for the polite discourse. While I may disagree with some point, I do respect that you may believe whatever what you want. I do hope that the rest of the season is more entertaining for you (and all fans).

  25. Another aazing amazing episode. This season is awesome so far. It didn't top the previous episode, but then again, I think 5x03 will go down as one of my favorite episodes of Community ever and this was one, on a very different note, was also great and an excellent way to follow up. I could really felt Pierce's presence there, so kudos to the writers, very well done. Loved all the admissions, but my favorite has to be Jeff's, "I would rather watch myself than the girls I sleep with" ahahah. Joel McHale is so awesome and underated.

  26. It was just more of the same this show always produced, even last year, and it was predictable how they were gonna tie it into Donald Glover leaving
