Chicago Fire - Episode 2.12 - Out With a Bang - Review

I’m still feeling the pain from the escalator incident. I can watch someone get shot in the head, objects pierced through bodies, but for some reason when the lady’s head gets stuck on the escalator and her scalp gets ripped off, I couldn’t help but scream in pain too.

We open at the academy where Dawson’s having a test. Imagine my surprise(not) when Jones cheats. She claims that she has dyslexia but I’m not sure I believe her. She’s obviously going to get away with it, unless Dawson reports her. Do you think she would do that? I’m still not sure where Jones stands. Is she genuinely a nice person or is she going to stab Dawson in the back?

Casey is still struggling with his temper. He’s being paranoid and picking fights in public and I’m not sure why Dawson is letting him go that easily. I guess it’s still too soon for overreactions. They’re probably trying to build it up and then blow it up to pieces. At least he’s reaching out to Severide. I wish the writers would give them more screen time together, it would be nice to see them hanging out more.

This week, we learnt that Rafferty used to be a medical resident until her fiancĂ©e died from an illness. I know this somehow tells us that she’s straight, but I don’t like labels and hope she’ll become a love interest for Shay. Do you think they’ll work out as a couple?

It turns out that the lawyer who’s trying to reach Shay just wants her to know that all of Daryl’s assets will be transferred to her. She returns to Daryl’s house and we watch her go through the traumatic incident in her mind. Daryl’s creepy brother suddenly appears out of nowhere and scared the crap out of Shay and I. He’s here for the money and we all know it. The question is, will he return after Shay changed her mind?

There are also some really enjoyable scenes that should be mentioned. It’s nice to see Chief Boden finally move on with his personal life. He meets a woman during a fire call and that woman happens to be Scott’s mother from Teen Wolf. I love her in that show and I hope I would love her in this too. Things with Chief Boden and Mills seem to be peachy, with Mills trying to help the Chief out by giving him advice about the dating game. I hope they stay this way and develop some kind of father-son bond. Also, Chief Boden should smile more, he has a beautiful smile.

Speaking of Mills, I liked seeing him get pranked by the guys. Maybe it’s because I don’t really like his character that much. OK, it's not that I don't like him, I just feel like he doesn't stand out. Is it just me?

Otis and Katie are so cute together. I have no other words to describe it any further. That’s all you have to know.

Shay decided to use the money from Daryl’s assets to save Molly’s from closing down. It’s predictable yet nice to see that Hermann, Otis and Dawson really appreciate it. The episode ends with a massive 51 group hug. My happy feels lasted for a second before the showing of next week's promo.

The promo looks really intense, for those who haven’t seen it, please do. For now, let me know what you guys think about the episode!

  1. Great episode! I looked away during the escalator incident.
And I really love Mills! I was sad when they broke him up with Dawson over nothing, but I guess Dawson and Casey were always gonna become a couple (and I like them both). I really enjoy Boden and Mills getting along and agree that they should have father-son relationship.
I don`t like Katie, but it´s nice to see Otis having a storyline and some luck in love:)

  2. I generally liked the same things you did about this episode, but I confess I also found it a frustrating one, as the piling up of characters doing dumb stuff mainly to squeeze out contrived drama is getting a bit much. I mean, we have
    1. and most obviously, Casey suffering memory lapses, mood swings, and frankly dangerous reactions under stress nevertheless persisting in saying nothing is wrong--and being allowed to get away with it! (especially funny: the show actually reminding us that we've alreadady had this exact plot with Severide);
    2. Shea's somewhat understandable but nevertheless tiresome by now angst over suicide, inheritance etc. At least, with this one, we ended up at the end of the episode with the sensible solution of just giving the money to somebody else, which we could have got to without all the angsting and contrived melodrama of Molly's being on the verge of closing due to a financial crisis involving a debt conveniently close in size to what Shea will inherit. And naturally, suicide boy's brother has to be a psycho, with more over-the-top melodrama to come as a consequence of Shea's refusal to give him the cash. You'd think fires and medical emergencies would provide enough drama, but apparently not.
and 3. linked back to 2, is the Molly's crisis thing. No reference whatsoever to any legal recourse our owners might have over what was the fraudulent sale to them of the bar--either by going after the so-called owner, or by going after their legal representation, who smoehow managed to miss the fact that there was a lien on the property--or did they do the deal without a lawyer? I can't remember (if so, there's your lesson in why you always hire a lawyer). Anyway, ANY propertry sale would have as a requirement a legal search for such things as, you know, liens against a property before the sale could be made, so this plot too simply creates implausible melodrama. Again, it wasn't enough that they had to deal with mob "protection," they also have to have dumbass legal problems even the most perfunctiory of legal checks as part of the normal process of purchasing a property would have uncovered.
I mean, yes, I get it, they want there to be character-based drama as well as job-based drama, but of late that stuff has been getting rather soapy and rather hard to swallow.

  3. I know right!! The escalator scene was too hard to watch. Yes, a father and son relationship would be nice.

  4. I like it too, but for some reason this episode just seemed to bug me more on this front than most do.

  5. Yes, I agree with everything you said. The thing is, although I love the show, I don't have high expectations when it comes to the intricate details of some of the story lines. Sometimes it feels like they're just trying to drag unnecessary story-lines out It's frustrating too, but I try not to dwell on them and just enjoy the show. Thanks for your thoughts!
