Beauty and the Beast – 2.11 – Held Hostage – Review: Life is a grindstone…

28 Jan 2014

'Life is a grindstone. But whether it grinds us down or polishes us up depends on us.

In case you missed it, we had another successful trend last week. But we fell of the Get Glue chart and didn’t make it onto Trendrr’s Top 10 list. I want to encourage all of you to post at least once daily on the official Beauty and the Beast page from here on out as well. The activity is now being officially monitored.

I love that we Beasties are mobilizing, learning how to supercharge our presence in social media, winning polls and roaring loud for a season 3. Keep up the great work!

I have a pretty cool idea to gets a sponsor and it can be found here! I hope to see a lot of familiar screen names participating in that project.

Friendly Reminders

Don’t forget to live tweet with the show (@cwbatb) every Monday night at 9 PM EST/8PM Central on The CW.
Trend events begin at 6 PM EST and end around 1 AM EST.
The official hashtag according to Nielsen and Trendrr is STILL #BATB.
Also remember to only use two hashtags in your tweets, otherwise it is filtered out as spam.

Now on to your regularly scheduled recap and review…

Synopsis: CAT, TORI AND TESS ARE TAKEN HOSTAGE — A group of criminals looking to steal a rare necklace in Tori’s (guest star Amber Skye Noyes) possession takes Cat (Kristin Kreuk), Tori and Tess (Nina Lisandrello) hostage at the precinct, leaving Vincent (Jay Ryan) as their only hope for help. Vincent is forced to make a decision since helping could reveal his true identity to the entire force.

=======================================================================================================
This week’s episode was written by Pamela Sue Anton. What a great first outing, you go Pammy Sue. In the director’s chair was Sudz Sutherland. Sudz is a newcomer and fit right in. If I hadn’t looked I would have thought one of regulars was directing. Sudz fits right in, welcome to the Fanmily!

Agent Landon - Agent Landon trying to profile Tess in an extreme situation such as the one they were in came across as highly callous. Makes me think she knew she was getting out alive. There is something fishy going on and all outsiders are highly questionable at this point.

Cat – The writers finally get it. Cat doesn’t need to be jumping from man to man. She needs to get back in touch with herself. She needs time and space to figure things out. It has finally been verbalized on the show and I am so thankful. I know it won’t stick but I’m just going to bask in the glow until they burst my bubble.

Gabe – I’ve seen a theory floating around that Gabe is really not that into Cat. I chalked it up to everyone loathing the pairing that is Gatherine/Gat. Not to mention that I just never feel any sexual chemistry between the two ever, personally. But I’m starting to come around to believe that Gabe is seducing Cat for nefarious purposes. All of his actions in this episode are highly questionable.

Tess – As much as Nina killed it in this episode, the character of Tess was out of character. I just can’t see Tess confessing like that. Tess had a pretty sucky birthday, I guess we can’t all have it like Cat in episode 1x05: Saturn Returns, which is a shame because this season could use a whole lot more fun.

Tori – Oh boy, did the claws come out! I’m not a fan of Bratty!Tori. I just wish they could have given us a competent and in control she-beast. Tori is the worst beast ever. I could forgive her is she was younger but supposedly she is around Cat’s age, so no pass for her. She’s so obsessed with Vincent that all her critical thinking skills go right out the window. I predict that will be her downfall.

Vincent – There’s the hero that I missed so dearly. I really like that Vincent decided to save those people on his own. Although, I’m pretty sure Cat’s first pep talk was still lingering in his ear. This episode is very interesting because we got to see Vincent interact with everyone, an event that rarely occurs. I liked seeing him put Cat and Gabe in their places and calling them out. I like that Tess got to share a tender moment with Vincent for a change.

VinCat – Don’t hate me shippers. Y’all know I love me some VinCat but I did feel they got together way too soon in season 1. They only that excited about VinCat being separated this season was them being able to fall in love all over again and at a slower pace. Now we even have the potential bonus of Cat and Vincent actually being able to go out on REAL dates; although, the rooftop is fine by me. I loved their interactions in the episode because it was one that came without fear of someone’s feelings being hurt or someone getting upset and walking away. They could just talk and truly express what was going on, respectively.

Grade: B+

Character of the Night

Vincent is my character of the night. This script really let Jay Ryan convey Vincent’s frame of mind; something that has not been externalized fully this whole entire season. I’m still miffed at his callous actions but I can actually see the road to redemption now. Thank goodness.

Best Character Interactions

Cat and Tori – I wish they didn’t have to be enemies and Tori could have served as a kid sister because whenever these two are together, I can help but laugh (not sure if that’s what the writers were going for). The contentious relationship was a highlight of the episode for me.

Cat and Vincent - I’m sorry but every single time they’re on screen together, the body language speaks louder than actual words coming out of their mouths. Cat got to say her piece and Vincent finally got to say what we’ve all been thinking. It still doesn’t make all his bad decisions OK but at least he was allowed to voice his side of the narrative.

Favorite Moments

1. Tori goes all ‘Little Miss Glowy Eyes’ on Cat
2. Tori tosses the guard out of the interrogation room’s window.
3. Tess hugs Vincent.
4. Gabe doesn’t let Cat kiss him.
5. Vincent casually checking out the blueprints.
6. Tess trying to explain away the crazy and impossible situation that just occurred to Agent Landon.

Favorite Lines

1. Gabe: Cat, THE GUN?
2. Vincent: Or what? You'll shoot her as well?
3. Cat (to Tori): I hate and you and Vincent don't stand a chance.

Favorite Scenes

1. Cat apologizing to Vincent and saying SHE will protect him.
2. Vincent finally saying how Cat’s whole family has wronged him.
3. Vincent explaining to Gabe why he doesn’t trust any of them.
4. Cat kicking Tori’s butt.
5. Vincent kicking the bad guys’ butts.
6. Cat realizing that Vincent didn’t hear her and decided to save everyone on his own accord.

Burning Questions

1. How the hell does the gem work?
2. What the hell was JT doing while all of this was going on?
3. Does JT even work at that college anymore?

Theory
• Agent Dana Landon is not who or what we think she is. Something is highly suspicious about the character. I hope I’m wrong, I love Elisabeth Rohm.
• Gabe is still the villain, he’s the one behind all of this.

Repeated Elements
• Being all in.
• Things being unresolved.

Theme
• Old habits die hard.

Grievances List
• Tess confesses to Agent Landon, she’s a cop who is constant danger, didn’t ring true for me.
• Another bad guy who is a million steps ahead of Team Beastie, that will probably be revealed at the end of the season on another cliffhanger. [Insert eye roll here.]
• Cat, Gabe and Tess are awful liars.
• Turns out Vincent isn’t the brightest bulb in the box, he plan for the necklace was stupid and reckless.
• Heather hasn’t called Cat out on her Vincent Zalanski story. I’m going to need that phone call before the season is over.
• Tori’s naïveté borderlines on sheer stupidity.
• Gabe’s thirsty behind not going in for the kiss. Uh-huh, like that is believable.
• No, JT, again, they didn’t even mention inviting him to Tess’s birthday party. Really?

WTF Moments
• Did they really have to kill old man Freddy?
• Another set of bumbling low level bad guys. Bad Bio Dad, you are sorely missed.

Hey, I like this new form of a “photo review”: short, but precise! ;-)

About Catherine “I know it won’t stick“. do you know more than us, or are you just speculating?
“Gabe is still the villain, he’s the one behind all of this.” I pray your theory will prove to be correct!
And I agree, a well written episode for a premiere!

  2. One thing that stood out to me in this ep was we watched Cat put her cell phone in a bucket with her gun. How did she get her cell back? Did I miss something?

And I'm a little unclear as to if V heard Cat or not. When they were talking she just said she apologized but he mentioned the "old Vincent" guilt trip. So, did he hear or not? I'm confused!! :/

But overall, one of the best eps this season!! VinCat's BACK!!! ....you can't see me, but trust me, I'm dancing!! ;) lol

  3. When Cat left the jail cell, she picked up the bad guys cell, and Vincent didn't hear her prayer, the lecture she gave him when he dropped in on her and Tori, was on his mind he mentioned the guilt trip she put on him is why he changed his mind, she knew V was still in there:)

  6. thanks Lilith - i have being saying for a while. Gabe is either a robot or he is a snake. i will go with the latter. i bet the episode 16 cliffhanger will involve him in a major way. if not, the writers have done a bad job with his character portrayal

  7. I 100% agree with you that VinCat got together too soon in Season 1 ~ not that I'm complaining but I believe the Writers gave in to fans as they did not know if we were getting a Season 2 and all the ridiculous backlash now on an otherwise pretty stellar Season 2 is because of them "spoiling" the Beasties back then.

    Fave Moments:
~ Vincent saving Cat. Right there. Made everything bad fade away.
~ Cat's "prayer" to Vincent ~ On a VinCat level ~ I'm a tad disappointed he didn't hear her BUT on a character level, his returning to save lives on his own volition is a definite step to showing the naysayers that caring Vincent is on his way back.

~ Vincent and Cat's little chat at the end ~ have missed this lighthearted banter between them so much.

~ No GORI relations ~ HALLELUJAH!
~ Cat kicking SheBeast butt ~ not nearly enough tho.
~ Tess hugging Vincent ~ finally annoying ungrateful chick redeemed herself.

    Theories about the Gem ~
My initial thought was that Rebecca Reynolds was in love with an ancestor of Vincent who was a Beast but that's out the window now.
Current theory which relates to how Cat can kick Beast butt ~ perhaps the gem not only tames Beasts but also has the ability to transfer their Beast power to someone like Cat.

    Big Bad Gabe?

The way Brad Kern gushes over Gabe makes me doubt he is the ultimate Big Bad ~ but if he does turn out to be so ~ much respect to the Writers for pulling the wool over us and trust me I will be rejoicing!

Love your theory on Gabe and hope it comes true. I never fully trusted Gabe at all this season and I thought I was the only one for a while there! Bring on VinCat!

  11. Hy,great review like always, glad that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, sorry about those who lost faith and left, hope they will come back.I loved all the episodes but #Heldhostage was special.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yes, I really think that those who have left will begin to make their way back. A really great episode that wiped away my doubts.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh, no, Gabe has been getting the side eye from me all season long. I'm glad he got redemption but that would be too boring.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I need season 3 too! Glad so many loved this episode. Pammy Sue knocked it out of the park.

  15. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Glad you liked the episode.

  16. That gem is giving me a headache. On the podcast, we dubbed it Beastonite. It literally has to be magic for it to work, so it's kind of jumping the shark but at the same that could lead to werewolves, which I like so I'll just wait and see.

    ReplyDelete
  17. They've shoved Gabe down our throats so hard trying to make us like him, there must be a reason.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I really loved the Vincent and Gabe scenes too!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, the return of a heroic Vincent is needed. Glad they gave us that little victory.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, I like to switch things up every now again. Glad you liked the review and the episode.

  21. So happy you're happy as are most of the fans. Really good episode. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  22. Thanks for this review. I enjoyed the episode and I hope that all your questions will be answered in the coming weeks.I wonder what scenes have been cut out and left on the editors floor.
It will be interesting to see how well Catherine and Vincent can work together after all that has gone on between them lately and whether Tori will try to insert herself between them.
Tori is the one who is jealous of Catherine ,she appeals to the primal side of Vincent but Catherine had (or has) his heart.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for reading and commenting. Yes, it is known that Catherine has his heart, he has even gone back to calling her that in this episode (file that under baby steps). Tori won't be in the picture much longer so only Gabe will be left to wonder about on the romance front.

  24. Great episode #batb we want 3rd season

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks Lilith for the great review. I loved this episode so much that I cannot stop grinning. I loved VinCat moments, they really needed to have that 'chat' and I am glad Vincent was able to tell her how he felt. Cat needed to hear that. Finally hopefully they both can let go of the anger and find their way back to each other.. cos that's where they belong. When Vincent saved Cat and they were on the floor, their gaze said it all. The chemistry between these two is out of this world.
As for Gabe, he was nasty in S1 and he is up to no good in this season either. Soon enough we'll see him reveal his true self..
Next week episode looks really good and can't wait to see where this journey takes our beloved characters:)

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1: The Gem is like Vincent's krypyonite. That's the only reason Cat could knock out Tori. She was wearing it around her neck !!
2: JT may have been on a date with Sarah's parents (the girl from the college)
3: Yes he does work there, but mostly in the lab. Hence, next week , he was supposedly kidnapped while going to see his 'new lab'

    ReplyDelete
  27. I re-watched last night and noticed both. That's why I love to watch more than once, you always catch things you missed since most often there is so much going on here! lol :) But thanks for your help!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. My burning questions are sarcastic ones, but thanks for answering them anyway. Well aware of the Beastonite as we've dubbed on the podcast. But it has to be magic in order for it work. Or have alien technology that has coding to stop certain genetic functions? That is actually what I meant by 'how does the gem work?' Thanks for stopping and commenting.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes, so many theories. Every time one question gets answered another pops up! We're running out of time and I think every episode from here on will have crazy pacing and amazing reveals. So happy, I stuck around to see the show make a comeback! See ya back here next week?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Loved what you said about Cat, until they burst your bubble! What gave you idea Torible was around 30? Amber herself said more early 20's at the beginning, did I miss something? My theory: Gabe is still beast, just dormant & when V & Cat are getting back to each other, Gabe is going to beast out & kidnap Cat to keep her away from V, that will be our cliff hanger in March! lol Agree this episode clearly defined V feelings & justified his actions. Still think her heard Cat but was going to help any way. Yes ADA Landon knows about beasts and is either really a bad gal or is using these people to help find her husband who was studying beasts as well. Hope they keep the Vin Cat relationship/friendship headed in a positive direction!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with you on your Gabe theory. I've had this same theory since day one of season 2. Great review! I like this format the most I think.

  32. No problem, I've watched it twice already, ready to watch it again, you know how we do this show, lol:)

  35. #BATB show is incredible for many reasons - great plot, great actors, but most of all it's about a devoted, true love and this is precious! Please give this show the chance to develop its full potential with many seasons in the future!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I loved your Review. Your deductions it seems to my and your assumptions make so much sense.
I Loved to see Vincent put out his heartaches. I also don't like of some attitudes him, but soon to pass because I can understand their reasons. About Cat, sometimes she seems so hard and cold that makes me think that his love for Vincent ended up, but I could see a little of love in your eyes, on this episode.
I have the impression that this was e episode of this season in which VinCat interacted more. BATB this is it "VinCat ever".
I hope that the next episodes will be very good, because the some previous episodes had storylines that did sense to the show,

  37. If you click words it takes you to the official BATB Facebook page. You can bookmark it from there.

  38. When Tori made her first appearance the writers account said she was closer to Cat's age but then backtracked, for awhile Amber wasn't even allowed to answer that question. Seemed a little sketchy.

TY for your review Lilith, well done! Fantastic episode, I really hope that all the beasties will be on board again, they'll miss out on so much if not! :) I have my doubts about Gabe-Cat said to him that he knows where to switch on the lights- why didn't he tell her immediately? At the beginning, when V punched the guy to the floor, Gabe shot him-why was that necessary-the guy was on the floor- did he do that to silence him? At the end- the helicopter was issued - by whom? That was part of the hostage negotiations- so maybe Gabe ordered the helicopter & the sniper that was on it? Lol!! Theories much, but I don't now, something seems 'off' with Gabe to me :) Mmmm.... I won't be surprised if something is sinister there, although I really think Gabe is a good guy at the moment :)
