The Originals - Review of Episode 1.09 - Reigning Pain in New Orleans

Well, that’s it for the first half of the season. The war between Klaus and Marcel seemed to have cooled down, as they find a new common enemy: the humans. But before that he sends his new army out wolf hunting, something that does not sit well with Hayley. Elijah and Rebekah stop the vampires and finds the descendants of Klaus’ biological father. Cami proves she’s one smart cookie, finding loopholes in Klaus’ compulsion, which is later unfortunately reversed when Klaus re-compels her. Davina finds out Marcel has been lying to her and it seems she may (or may not, can’t really tell) have made a new friend in Hayley. The episode ended with The Original family somewhat reconciled, Marcel and Klaus back as a best buds, Hayley and Klaus at odds and Cami getting her head scrambled (again), this time by Davina.

Best witch moment: Since there was only one witch in this episode, (seriously, did Sophie die or something?), Davina un-compelling Cami was my favorite witch moment. I wonder how Davina plans to use Cami, why she was even at her apartment in the first place. I felt kinda bad for Cami, that looked like it hurt. At this rate Cami will end up in the nuthouse before the end of the season.
Best badass moment: Klaus just can’t help but piss off the women on this show. I loved the scene where Hayley threatens him. Him going after her family was a low blow, may even have had something to do with her choosing to believe Elijah over him a few episodes ago. What did surprise me was Klaus’ inability to answer Hayley’s question when she asked what will happen to her after the baby’s born. I can’t believe he’d actually kill her. But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Best fight scene: Still not sure if it qualifies as a fight scene as there was little fighting back, but Klaus and Marcel killing the human faction was just glorious to watch. I’m surprised the humans actually thought they’d get away with it, especially after they saw how quickly Klaus gets offended. Father Kieran seems to be the only one who had some sense left, which earned him his freedom. Doesn’t hurt that he’s Cami’s uncle. Boy, that guy is in way over his head.

Best “Aaw” moment: My heart skipped a beat when Josh gave Davina the violin. Not sure if she’s told him the story but he obviously knew it was important to her. These two are so underrated and deserve way more scenes. With all the animosity on this show, it’s important to also showcase the friendships.

Best chemistry moment: Aah, Elijah and Hayley again of course. I’m not planning to start a ship war here, as I ship her with both Original brothers. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that I love the balcony scene. From the backdrop to the actual sparks I saw flying out of my computer screen.  I’m glad there was no kiss yet, would in my opinion have been too soon. I think the main two reason for Elijah holding back that Hayley is carrying his brother’s child (that would be awkward in any situation) and that, as we saw last week, the people he cares for have a way  of ending up dead or hurt. On Hayley side it’s probably the fact that he’s one of her few allies and she doesn’t want to jeopardize that. And of course also the “carrying his brother’s baby” factor. But I think now that they both know there’s something there on both ends, they can start to work through those issues. I mean, even Rebekah saw it.
Biggest “Oh no you didn’t” moment: Marcel chooses Klaus over Rebekah AGAIN. I get how much Klaus meant to him, but after everything that’s been going on these past weeks I can’t see how he’d choose him over the woman he claims to love. Rebekah once again gets screwed over. I doubt he’ll get a third chance. I am curious what the big secret between the two is though.

Best entrance: It was a small moment, but Rebekah’s entrance when she and Elijah came to get Hayley is exactly the reason why I love her so much. The perfect combination between badass and sass.

Favorite moment: Again, a fairly non-important scene, but for the one-liners alone, I went with the scene of Hayley, Davina and Josh what I presumed was a garage. They are all getting screwed over by Klaus and Marcel and I hope they can become allies. From what I can see in the promo, my wish might come true.

“I wish this would have happened” moment: Rebekah vs. Diego. He just kept getting in her way, and not for the first time this season. I would’ve loved to see her kick his ass. Or as Rebekah put it “rearrange that pretty face of his.”
Best quotes: Klaus: “However, I understand that some of you are concerned by this vicious rumor that I intend to use the blood of our child to create hybrids. I assure you, I do not.” Hayley: “Father of the year.”
Davina: “Are you ok?” Josh: “Yeah. Yeah. … No not really. I mean, I totally led Klaus into a trap that was like the most epic failure of all time. So yeah, I’m kind of crapping my pants right now, figuratively… so far.
Elijah: “I’m not trying to impress the girl.” Rebekah: “I should bloody hope you are. Why else are we out here?”
Davina: “You’re Hayley. Klaus’ wife.” Hayley: “Ew, no. Never.”
Rebekah: “May do wonders for the stick that’s lodged up your enduringly stoic ass if you did.”
Hayley: “And let’s not forget Josh. Newbie vampire, way out of his element. Voted most likely to die next.” Josh: “Oh, fantastic.”

The Originals is back January 14th. Until then I wish you all happy holidays. See you next year.

  1. I don't Klaus has actually thought about what will happen once the baby is born. But I'd imagine that he'd want her alive and probably want her to actually be a mother to their child and take care of her. I just don't see Klaus getting up multiple times in the middle of the night to comfort or feed a crying baby - so I think that Hayley may end up doing most of that.

  2. Good review!! You manage to capture all the fun stuff ;)
I thought the most intrigue moment was when Hayley asked Klaus on her fate once the baby was born, I thought he was somewhat offended that she asked such as question of him. It's like she still lack faith on his intention and still cast him as the villian and lesser brother. On the other hand who can blame Hayley for wondering! I could be wrong though, but that was one of great moment of many many great monents! The Originals is fast becoming my favorite new series. Thanks again for the review.
p.s. Although I am probably a little bit more of Team Hayley-Elijah, I have to say that Hayley-Klaus relationship is a fascinating one. Cami-Klaus is ok but cant have but its a been there, done that relations. Love Josh-Davina!

  3. lol imagine Klaus changing a diaper.

On the Haylijah thing and Klaus not being okay with it. If he's able to character grow out of his paranoia, I don't see it being a huge issue (at least not one the writers will focus on a \ plot device) once the baby is born.

I don't see Elijah being vindictive enough to believe he could be (or pretend to be) the baby's father--which is what Klaus ultimately fears. Klaus isn't romantically attached to Hayley, so other the occasional awkwardness, they'd live.

  4. Fun review! I wonder how many witches are left of the NOLA coven at this point.

  5. I'm the same on the shipping front, enjoying both Haylijah and Klayley, but leaning more towards the former

  6. I don't know - I think Elijah would. If Marcel's plot had been successful Klaus would have been locked up in the Garden for the next 52 years and he would miss basically the entire life of his child.

Even in this episode Elijah came to "save" Hayley and get her somewhere safe so he obviously thought Klaus was going to kill her and the baby was in danger. It also seemed like after Tyler showed up Hayley wanted Elijah to run away with her and hide the baby from Klaus.

  7. I don't think Elijah would have liked Hayley in TVD's season either, esp going by how quickly he dropped Katherine after she learned her part in Jeremy's death. Hayley did do a pretty horrible thing in my opinion with the hybrids and Carol Lockwood and working with Kat off-screen where she spilled the beans about the cure in the first place. Not to mention, personality wise, I just don't see them getting along, at all.
BUT, since TO seems to have forgotten 90% of what Hayley did in TVD, I guess that's not an obstacle, lol. So I enjoy their scenes. But I do hope her past actions will be brought to light, if Elijah accepts them, then I'd enjoy their ship even more. If he dumps her, I wouldn't feel too bad about it either, lol.

  8. I guess it's really up to how the writer's will handle it. But I can't see them having Elijah consciously take up the father role for the child. I mean, becoming a father to someone doesn't happen overnight. Unless Klaus is out of the way, he'd never get away with it.

And that brings me to the point of believing Elijah wouldn't kill Klaus or get rid of him in any way. Rebekah would, not Elijah. He wasn't in on the Marcel and Rebekah's coup d'état.

And given how Klaus has been reacting to his abusive lack of control over his family, it was understandable Elijah feared Klaus would lash out after Marcel's failed coup. (tbh, I think it was just lazy writing to get interaction between Elijah/Hayley/Rebekah, cause they had somehow get the werewolf storyline going lol)

  9. Elijah was ready to kill Klaus in Season 2 of TVD. He changed his mind at the very last second but his plan was for a witch to channel enough power so that when Klaus transitioned into a werewolf Elijah could rip his heart out.

Elijah didn't seem to have any issue with Rebekah trying to take out Klaus at all. He hasn't said anything to her at all about it and they seemed to be getting along just fine so I assumed he had no problem with Rebekah trying to shove him in the Garden.

  10. Well I think its hard to use past TVD transgression when we're talking The Originals character growth and/or arc. I mean, take Hayley for example, they're purposely overlooking her semi-villainous role to save screen-time explanations. While we're on it, all three Mikaelsons have claimed "no one hurts my family" when they've yet to seek revenged on the gang at Mystic Falls for killing Kol and Finn.

These aren't organic people, but fictional characters at the whim of the writers and the limitations of a show. Haylijah is a popular ship now and the writers seem to like the chemistry enough to keep it going. And they love family drama enough to keep using the whole klaus/hayley/elijah problem.

  11. Hahaha yeah there were some great one liners. Hayley saying "Ew. No. Never." And Rebekah's "Well i should bloody hope you are, why else are we out here?" Were my favorite lines. But there were many i enjoyed. As for Davina giving Cami her memories back. I didn't like at all. We've already seen that on TVD with Stefan and Tessa, and Cami has been through enough, so i felt really bad for her when Davina did that. B/c it did hurt like hell. And now i fear Cami will scold her Uncle, and berate Klaus to no end. (sigh my Klamille heart is broken). Davina only went to Camille's house b/c she pretty much had no one else to trust and nowhere else to go. And idt we can say Davina and Hayley are friends yet. I think it's more of a common enemy thing. "The enemy of my enemy" and all that. Which i can understand.

As for Marcel choosing Klaus over Bex...no duh.No surprise there..As i said before I hate Marcel, i don't trust him. And Rebekah is SO daft! When it comes to men. I love her so much, but seriously if she gives Marcel another chance, i will start to lose affection for her. I really hope she rips Marcel a new one.

My favorite chemistry moment is of course Haylijah!!! I can't wait til they start to "talk things through" instead of the glares, and the hand holding (gah! I do love their hand holding that was enough confirmation for me that the feelings were mutual). When they finally have "the talk" listen out for a THUD...that'll be me, btw. lol

I wish Sophie was dead!!! But tbh, i think she's just plotting her next move. I think Bex should kill her and Diego!!! I don't think Bex has done enough killing as opposed to her brothers so far. So i think it's her turn to really get some anger out. And after Marcel once again just dumped her ass. She needs to vent. And and if she needs to kick Diego's ass then so be it. (I don't like him anyway)

Davina and Josh are adorable, and i love their friendship. I hope Davina can keep on protecting him. After all the crap she's been through, she needs a friend, and i think she really trust Josh.
