Tuesday 12/10/13 Metered Market Ratings
Easy Victory for CBS; Season High for “Chicago Fire” on NBC
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 9.2/15
NBC 5.9/10
Fox 3.2/ 5
ABC 3.1/ 5
CW 0.6/ 1
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 12/11/12:
Fox: +23, ABC: + 7, NBC: + 5, CBS: + 2, CW: -40
———-
-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS), “The Voice” (NBC), “Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” (CBS), “Chicago Fire” (NBC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“The American Country Awards” (Fox), “The Goldbergs” (ABC), “Trophy Wife” (ABC), “What Would You Do?” (ABC)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS scored a typical Tuesday overnight household victory, but it was not a clean six half-hour sweep courtesy of the season-high 5.9 rating/10 share for NBC’s “Chicago Fire” at 10 p.m. “NCIS” on the Eye net topped the night, of course, with a 12.1/19 at 8 p.m. And that led into a dominant 9.6/15 for “NCIS: Los Angeles” at 9 p.m. At 10 p.m., annual special “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” scored a 6.0/10, which won the hour overall and was just six percent below the 6.4/11 for the year-ago edition in the time period (on 12/04/12). That 6.4/11 translated into 9.48 million viewers and a 3.6 rating/10 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data.
On NBC, reliable “The Biggest Loser” (#2: 4.4/ 7) and demo dominant “The Voice” (#2: 7.4/12) were down by single-digit percentages from one week earlier, while aforementioned “Chicago Fire” (#2: 5.9/10) increased by nine percent. Comparably, “Chicago Fire” bested year-ago occupant “Parenthood” (4.2/ 7 on 12/11/12) by a hefty 40 percent.
Over at ABC, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” slipped to a series-low 4.4/ 7 (#2) at 8 p.m. And that led into typically lackluster performances for freshman comedies “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.3/ 5) and “Trophy Wife” (#4: 2.6/ 4) from 9-10 p.m. At 10 p.m., recent returnee “What Would You Do?.” which is normally a late spring/summer staple, could not compete with a distant third-place 2.3/ 4 in the overnights at 10 p.m.
In the specials department was annual “The American Country Awards” on Fox, which scored a modest 3.2/ 5 (and fourth-place) in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, this was six percent below the last year’s 3.4/ 5 (on Monday 12/10/12, which translated into 5.07 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data).
The CW capped off the evening with encores of the “The iHeart Radio Release Party with Katie Perry” (#5: 0.7/ 1) and “The iHeart Radio Release Party with Lady Gaga” (#5: 0.5/ 1).

Ouch at Shield. Can we all say, again, how stupid ABC is for not moving it away from NCIS? Just swap it with the comedies and benefit all 4 programs on the night. Jeez.
ReplyDeleteSeason high for #ChicagoFire!!!!!
ReplyDelete4.4 isn't a season low for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nov 11th episode was a 4.2
ReplyDeleteGreat to know!
ReplyDeleteWhat else is ABC going to put in that time slot? They have to put something there and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the only show they have with any hope of doing well in that spot. The show doesn't have to win the hour to be a success for ABC and it IS doing well. The ratings are comparable to Sleepy Hollow which everyone has been praising as a massive hit.
ReplyDeleteSo happy about this! :)
ReplyDeleteThey should swap it with the comedies. The comedies would benefit from not airing against other comedies (not to mention the hour will have even more comedies when NBC launches theirs there come spring), Shield would benefit from not airing against NCIS and the 10pm shows would benefit from a decent lead-in rather than Trophy Wife which looks like its on its way to sub 1.0 ratings come spring. No one is hurt in this arrangement, it's simply being smart and working with what they have. Promotion required for this is minimal also as they are all swaps inside the same night. People may get lost the first time but they will get it soon.
ReplyDeleteI was just going to say that exact same thing! Don't think the show has hit a 4.4 in the overnights yet, but I doubt that Marc Berman is going to edit his mistake anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteYeah, nothing like starting the day with unnecessary panic right? It's also the week after a repeat, ratings will always be down after the show takes a week or two off, happens to the best of shows and is to be expected.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you.
ReplyDeleteThe only problem with this scenario is that Trophy Wife still won't be a good lead-in for Shield either, and Shield sadly too would need a good lead-in..
ReplyDeletePersonally I think they should leave it where it is but pair it with a drama afterwards. I think ABC should move Castle to Tuesdays at 9m after S.H.I.E.L.D., both shows share a drama/comedy aspect and would probably prop each other up a bit
ReplyDeleteNo way ABC should move Castle right now. They have nothing else to replace it. The show is doing very well on a ridiculously hard timeslot Mondays at 10. A new show would tank there.
ReplyDeleteShield is already self starting. Why would it need a lead-in at 9pm (when viewing levels are higher by the way) than at 8pm? The lead-in it receives from the ABC affiliates at 7pm is likely low 1s at best, similar to what Trophy Wife will offer it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not thinking "now" so much as next season
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Shows that air at 8PM are not self-starters. ABC, and the rest of the channels, air shows on the 7PM hour too. We don't get their ratings but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Those shows can still offer higher lead-in ratings than Trophy Wife could offer as a lead-in.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Shield was supposed to be a self-starter and enjoyed high ratings at the beginning due to being a Marvel\Whedon show, but it's not doing so hot anymore, and could use any help it gets at this point.
I never said there were no shows at 7pm, just that the lead-in is quite small, as they are mostly affiliate syndication runs or news (it's local programming anyway). I don't have a link right now but I saw one a while ago about it and the ratings were on average mid to low 1s. which is in line (or a bit better only if you want) than what Trophy Wife does. I could be significantly wrong about this and have seen a link that is not representative (if so, I would glad see another one), but this is the idea I have.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you think Shield should get help, here it goes why it should be moved away from the 8pm slot:
- lower HUT levels at 8pm
- come spring, the 8pm hour is always the most depressed hour due to daylight savings time
- the show would move away from NCIS, with whom it clearly shares an audience
- the show would move away from the voice, which is moving back to 8pm come spring
How is that not helping it? I think it would be worth loosing 0.4/0.5 points of lead-in (if that much!). Not to mention it would help all the other shows in the process.
My bad. But the end result is the same though. They cannot launch anything right now at 10pm out of dying Dancing with the Stars and against whatever voice inflated show NBC will air there. It's just a bad bad idea. They risk hurting Castle (almost all shows bleed a bit while moved unless it is to a significantly better timeslot, which is not the case) with no real gain to make up for it. It's a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteLOVE This Show
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see how things look next Saturday (21st) when there's a S.H.I.E.L.D. ep at 9 and Castle at 10.
ReplyDeleteWe can ask at TVBTN what is the average ABC demo during mid-week at 7PM. I don't think it's as low as you think. The CW's was 0.78 last year, and that was quite close to their 8-10PM 18-49 average.
ReplyDeleteI agree it should move to the 9PM hour but I don't think Trophy Wife should move to the 8:30PM. They should air another comedy in that half hour imo.
Stupid is the definition of ABC.
ReplyDeleteSHIELD was supposed to be THAT show! The one that would help ABC on Tuesday nights. Maybe not destroy NCIS but hold it's own. It was supposed it be that monster for ABC that it's been looking for all these years.
ReplyDeleteHas it really come to this?
I HAVE to ask. Why the hashtag?
ReplyDelete"They have to put something there"
ReplyDeleteWhy? CBS doesn't have anything at 8:00PM on Wednesdays, why couldn't ABC skip this timeslot in Tuesdays? Not saying it's a good decision, just saying that it's wrong to assume they have to put something everywhere.
Sorry, I'm used to Twitter. My apologizes.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to apologize, I was just curious if it was actually a feature on the way in Disqus or something I didn't know about. Hashtags are evolving into both Instagram and Facebook in addition to Twitter, so I just curious if this was another place where it was going to become normal. That's all :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reply back. I'm a Twitter Junkie but I'm also a full-time student. Right now, I'm on Christmas Vacation. My GPA was pretty solid this year.
ReplyDeleteI have no clue what GPA means, but I hope it's a good thing, so congratulations! :P
ReplyDeleteGrade Point Average. My average is mainly As and Bs.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by CBS doesn't have anything 8pm Wednesdays?! They have Survivor there which is still pulling respectable ratings and winning the hour every single week.
ReplyDelete2 for AOS :'(
ReplyDelete2.0 for Shield :(
ReplyDeleteAhh damn, sorry, my bad! I use a daily TV listings source and I only have it show scripted series, therefore, I have always just assumed that space was available, but of course this makes perfect sense! Again, sorry, I should've double-checked before writing that!
ReplyDelete2.0?!?! That can't be right!
ReplyDeleteNo worries.
ReplyDeleteI used to think NBC was the most incompetent of the four major nets, but recently ABC's been giving them some competition in that department.
ReplyDeleteToday's ABC ratings are further proof that NCIS is crushing Shield (Shield goes up when NCIS is repeats) and that New Girl is crushing The Goldbergs (it goes up when New Girl is away). Swap them already ABC. And while you're at it, please fire Paul Lee!
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering the same thing. I know the whole text above isn't from SpoilerTV, but doesn't it say 4.4 for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? How can there be that big of a difference? And if it is true, why do we continue to trust this Marc Berman guy by posting such "summaries"?
ReplyDeleteNBC does alright for the most part working with what they have I think. I don't think it's even close to the stupidity of what ABC does.
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that in general, commentators here on STV make smarter decisions than the network executives. I'm going with omabin here, it was a really stupid decision to place it opposite NCIS and even stupider of them to not move it already.
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you happen to find it out then but I highly doubt it's more than 1.6. I think getting Trophy Wife as lead-in wouldn't matter and they really have nothing better to put there other than maybe Suburgatory but that one is badly needed on Wednesdays to help the overall flow of that night.
ReplyDeleteI understand why it wasn't done to begin with (kind of) but not why it wasn't changed back come midseason.
ReplyDeleteThey've turned things around quite a bit over the past few seasons. Now if only they could find a few decent comedy hits...
ReplyDeleteThey should move AOS from Tuesday to Monday (NO NCIS)
ReplyDeleteand DWTS to Tuesday (Less competition from CBS comedies and it will only face The Voice which is weaker on Tuesday)
But yes they need to fire Paul Lee ( I think this is his last season)
Overall AOS has been a big flop

Someone's typing wrong. NCIS with 9.36 million viewers. Nope! Not right.
ReplyDeleteAOS will be in the 1's soon
ReplyDeleteA show performing >100% of its comparable average is not a flop regardless of what expectations were. It just isn't.
ReplyDeleteHa, fat finger alert!
ReplyDeleteAll fixed. Thanks.
That's too many moves for a very low return. Shield is fine on Tuesdays, it just needs the 9pm hour instead. Also DWTS should go to Sundays and to one cycle only, not Tuesdays. IMO.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the comedy side is a problem. But I don't necessarily hold failed attempts over networks. Michael J.Fox and Sean could have worked, they just didn't. Something like using Trophy Wife as lead-in for two new shows can't work or has a very very very small chance of working.
ReplyDeleteIt has been a disappointment (ratings-wise), but I wouldn't call it a flop
ReplyDeleteSHIELD is delivering in spades in the young male demo!
ReplyDeleteReally disappointed by Shield's ratings.
ReplyDelete4.4 is the household rating 2.0 is the 18-49 demographic. That said NCIS's total viewers listed here can't be right.
ReplyDeleteLet's just hope AoS doesn't adjust down.
ReplyDeleteYes but when you consider the money spent, $ on promotion, it has not performed well. Even Castle (in its th season) got a 2.1 for its finale
ReplyDeleteI was super exicted for the show but the writing has been really bad for majority of the season
ReplyDeleteYay for Chicago Fire. I'm so happy it's improved so much since the first season. I feel like a parent fan. :P
ReplyDeleteChicago Fire hit a viewers high.
ReplyDeleteOh, my bad.
ReplyDeleteDWTS still has lots of life in it if handled properly! (but sun won't be good for it)
ReplyDeleteI am curious to see what happens when The Voice goes back to 8pm in the spring,
ReplyDeleteHow will it affect AOS?
How will Chicago Fire do with a weaker lead in?
They really need to do something to SHIELD because goddamnit I have invested emotionally a lot in this show already!
ReplyDeleteToo many times I thought it was too fluff. A comic show is supposed to appeal more to the male viewers, and if I'm, a girl in the 18-34 demo, find it fluff I can't help but wonder what would they think.
ReplyDeleteI think Suburgatory would work better with The Goldbergs than Trophy Wife.
ReplyDeleteI called AoS to get cancelled before the season started. Since episode 1, the ratings (viewers and demo) have decreased each week. Episode 8 broke the trend, with it increasing from episode 7, an increase that continued last episode. Episode 10 (last night) has now decreased BELOW the previous lowest. Might get adjusted up but not up to 2.2, which is the previous low. The ratings are really going to have to increase in the New Year, or it could go.
ReplyDeleteGreat for Chicago Fire (I really like this show), and not so great for AoS.
ReplyDeleteABC really need to do something when AoS comes back in January. I feel like the show has great potential, it's just not quite there yet. I like the story, i like the cast, i just think that the 'case of the week' need to follow a better development.
I think ABC has still time work on some strategies, and it has to be when this show comes back from the hiatus.
shield is such a massive failure...i do enjoy it but as it is marvel's first tv show that ties in the cinematic universe (not to mention all the promo they've got) this show should at least get a 3.xx demo
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteSaying that it hasn't performed well is a different thing than saying it is a flop. In addition, if you take the numbers from the last 3 episodes or so, there are 5 dramas doing better (NCIS, Scandal, The Blacklist, Grey's Anatomy and Criminal Minds), with NCIS LA and Sleepy Hollow doing roughly the same it has been doing, give or take. I wouldn't qualify that as not performing well. You mention Castle, and while I agree that Castle is a great performer that is doing terrific this season, I would never want to see its numbers if it had to face NCIS.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, do you have figures for the amount of additional promotion Shield got compared to the average ABC new show? While I am sure the show was far more promoted than the other ABC new shows, I am not convinced the additional amount (which what should be measured here) was as high as some people suggest.
