  1. No doubt for me - John revealing that he can kill too. Never saw that twist coming so it was even better.

  2. I wanted Killian to stick around a little longer, loved the casting but his and John and fight scenes were amazing.

  3. I saw it coming but it was a great twist this show is getting better each episode I just hope the ratings go up.

  4. He might return in episode 8-9 in flashbacks not that it's been confirmed or anything it's probably just wishful thinking.

  5. Agreed. Dohring is always a favorite of mine. I was excited to get a bit more action in this one as well.

  6. I have voted for the reveal that John could kill. I didn't see it coming at all and added a huge layer to the character, it was very well done. I also liked his scenes with Jedekiah a lot.

  7. Agree with this! I love it when I don't see a twist coming. I watch so many tv shows that it is not so easy to do so nowadays, but I love when it happens!

  8. Ha! Me too. Also coming to this site on a regular basis keeps the surprises to a minimum even when I'm not actively seeking out spoilers. The fact that it did surprise me was one of the reasons why this episode is my favorite so far.

  9. John and Mama Jameson are rapidly becoming my favorite characters on TTP. I like how John has more depth than Stephen and until he becomes part of the inevitable, smack-you-in-the-face-with-it love triangle, I have much sympathy for his character. I look forward to more John/Jedikiah standoffs, although I am getting heartily sick of Jedikiah already. He is going to be the character I plain hate (not love to hate) in a few episodes. So sad because even I know that they cannot kill him off. He is the evil soul of the show.

  10. I love Mark Pellegrino too much to have problems with Jedikiah so far. Besides, I honestly doubt they will keep him as a pure villain for that long. Shows are rarely able to sustain that with series regulars. I think we will get a flashback at some point humanizing him and explaining us why he is the way he is.

  11. I really hope that the issues between Jedikiah and Stephen's dad go beyond mere jealousy and a desire for power. If they can give those 2 a compelling plot, it will go a long way toward humanizing Jedikiah for me.

  12. I think they will do something along those lines. Although I expect them to hold on that story for a while, not sure if we will get it before Stephen's dad returns to the picture, which we all know will inevitably happen.

  13. My choice too, brilliant scene. When the shot rang out, I was sure someone had shown up to save John. To see the gun in his hand was a "WTF?" moment. You know that his keeping it a secret from Cara is going to come back to haunt him at the worst possible time, though.

  14. Unoriginal me once again voted for the most popular option - the reveal that John can kill was awesome. However, so were the John/Killian fight in the parking lot, both scenes between John and Jedikiah, John's super-teleporting (wow!), and Stephen's mom finally showing a more interesting side by warning Jed not to screw with her. I also thought they did a fine job casting Young John, that kid resembled Luke Mitchell quite a bit.

Shallow side of the pool: if the poll question was "Most visually pleasing scene", shirtless & sweaty John after punching the bag would win easily. Sorry, I'm only human (not a tomorrow person :) ).

  15. I like the fact that John is different from Stephen. He's more survivalist and focuses on keeping his people safe, not saving the world. However, the conflicts between them are depicted in a fairly objective way, without making John seem selfish or cowardly for not wanting to risk his and his friends' lives to save others. Also, while Stephen's determination to always fight the good fight is noble, it's more than a bit naive. He's clearly out of his league trying to deal with Ultra (and powerful adversaries like Killian), and I think it won't be long before he regrets having put himself in that pit of vipers.

  16. So far I find Ultra as a whole to be too one-dimensionally evil. They seem to always go for the kill unless they can recruit a Tomorrow Person to work for them. Two examples from 1x02 - one, not even trying to reason with that emo kid before opening fire, and two, killing Vaughn just because he couldn't rein Stephen in (?!). There's being ruthless and extremist for the sake of a good, or at least understandable cause, and then there's just cartoonish villainy. Heck, even the legitimate threat posed by Killian was Ultra's OWN fault. I hope the writers inject some depth into the story by making Ultra's cause more just, even if their methods clearly aren't.

I always enjoy MP, by the way, but he alone can't transform Jedikiah and Ultra into something more complex.

  17. I thought the same thing too. I think that this secret will cause a riff in the entire group not just with Cara. As we are bound to at some time get a change of leadership with Stephen taking charge as the Chosen One (eye roll), my guess is that this is the catalyst.

  18. I hope we get movement on Stephen's dad by at least the midseason finale. For all their talk about needing to find him again, they have done absolutely nothing on that goal. I understand that Stephen getting acclimated to his powers and setting up the evil that in Ultra comes first, but it would be nice if occasionally we got a piece of the larger puzzle as well.

  19. I am having some problems with Ultra as well. They are making it impossible to have any sympathy at all or even a clearcut reason to connect with them. The best bad guys are always personal like this one, but they usually give you at least an insight into why they got this way. So far we haven't gotten that, although it is still early. I agree that it is cartoony but unlike you, I think sometimes MP's acting makes things even hammier than they need to be.

  20. I disagree. In every episode in which John and Stephen disagree, they have at some point had John say Stephen is right. Only in this latest one has Stephen had to see John's side. For me that topples the story even more into the Chosen One category, in which the young, naive hero is always right and anyone who disagrees with him, no matter how much sense they make, has to learn the errors of their ways and ultimately fall in line to what the Chosen One wants. That is annoying storytelling and makes me dislike the "hero" more often than not. I think they need to do a much better job of balancing things out, especially if they feel the need to remind me that Stephen is the Chosen One every flipping episode. I think they did a much better job about balance in this one than the previous ones, which is probably why I like this episode the best.

  21. Ha! Just so you know, John being shirtless was in the original list of options to choose from but I cut it in the elimination rounds when trying to get the number to 12 options.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Haha. If you start putting Stephen's shirtless scenes in the original lists as well, it would take forever to narrow down the options...

  23. You make a good point about how Stephen is usually vindicated in the end, but I also think the show has demonstrated repeatedly that he's in way over his head. In this episode, for example, look how panicked he became upon realizing that Jedikiah set John up - did he seriously not see that coming? He's far too willing to trust Jedikiah given everything that he knows about him.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think they haven't gotten into it yet because the last episodes were more about getting to know the characters, especially John and Kara, but I think we will get it going around midseason finale, yes.

  25. This episode did a much better job of balance than the previous ones. I think the fight with Killian also showed Stephen he was in way over his head. He is naive and it seems he is learning that, but what I would like to see is a little less self-righteousness about what he thinks should happen and a little more looking at both sides of the issues.
