  5. So excited Revolution adjusted up!!!

  6. I am getting more and more confident about that season 3!

  7. Revolution FINALLY adjusts up!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Arrow and revolution woot woot

    ReplyDelete
  9. I don't know if I should be happy that this adjustment means that Arrow is doing even better than I thought, or sad because it makes TTP's rating look even worse.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Better for the greatest show ever, Survivor!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm in the same boat but as long as TTP doesn't drop below 0.6, it may escape cancellation by a small margin. I'm just enjoying it while I can.

    ReplyDelete
  12. ABC must really be regretting canceling back in the game. I've never watched it but its doing really good especially compared to tuesday night comedies

    ReplyDelete
  13. Depending on what TVD does tonight, Arrow could be the top CW show of the week. Pretty awesome. Glad it is getting the credit this season deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Probably not given that Back in the Game has the sweetest position, between Modern Family and The Middle. It should be a lot higher than it is. If you plugged other ABC comedies in that spot, they would be doing better too. I would love to see them put Goldbergs in that spot at midseason.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Great for Arrow and Revolution!
Arrow is doing way better than I thought and that makes me really happy; The CW now has 4 rating winners (The Originals, Supernatural, Arrow and TVD) and 2 runners up (TTP and Reign). Should they play their cards right, next season is just going to continue their growth!

Revolution can live on with a 1.5: for one, it airs on NBC, and also it is very stable on a not so good timeslot for NBC

    ReplyDelete
  16. Go Revolution GO :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wow, didn't expect Arrow to adjust up. This is great.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I guess The Black Canary arc didn't Arrow's ratings. But Summer Glau's heavy promoting of the show through online interviews didn't hurt it either (I lost the count after 5 interviews with her on Isabel Rochev's role in last night episode were released in major entertainment websites). It looked like Summer was Arrow's public Relation this week.

Did I mention that Summer Glau will be a guest on The Late Late Show hosted by Craig Ferguson on CBS this Friday, November 15 at 12:35am/11:35pm C?

  19. Revolution and Arrow are up! Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  20. WOW! Go Arrow! Let's keep this up and maybe we can usurp TVD as the #1 CW show.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Exactly. Now TTP is officially losing half of Arrow's audience. C'mon people, watch! One cute Amell isn't enough for Wednesday night!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why on earth would the BC arc hurt the show? If anything, it's responsible for the boost. Sara/BC was very well-received by fans, 2x04 and 2x05 were amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Super happy about Arrow and Revolution! Well deserved. Revolution was fantastic this week.Hopefully, it doesn't give back the small gain next week (I know it's statistically irrelevant, still makes me feel a bit better). Glad to see Arrow getting the ratings it deserves, this season has been mind blowing and the ratings falling was a poor way to show that. Very worried about The Tomorrow People though. It could have used that uptick more than Arrow. I hope it can get some momentum somehow but it's not looking good at all.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's a bit bittersweet though because while I'm very happy for it adjusting up, it makes TTP look even worse :S

    ReplyDelete
  25. Revolution just has to stabilize at a level a couple of ticks higher and I would declare it safe. Right now, it's still a bubble show, but I have to say it's holding up much better than I thought it would. It certainly is no Smash!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Exactly. Also, remember that Back in the Game is not produced by ABC and ABC has a history of making huge reaches to save comedies they own even when the ratings differential with other comedies is somehow considerable (The Neighboirs vs. How to Live, Happy Endings vs. Better with You, and now Trophy Wife vs. Back in the Game). Presumably, the cost differential (plus the eventual potential from syndication) is enormous for them.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I feel exactly the same way. I am still happy for Arrow but it's really sad that TTP couldn't adjust up as well :S

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, they are certain to bring back one out of Reign/TTP/The 100/Star Crossed I would say (and they can bring up two) but it's an uphill battle. If Arrow continues to perform so high, they won't waste its leadin on TTP next year I think. It's too soon to call anything, but at this point TTP sits squarely on the bubble, which is very very sad.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's still bubble, I don't want to get my hopes too high. The fact that it's airing at 8pm could mean higher than the average drops come DST in spring, which could doom it. Hopefully not. Let's hope that this week is the beginning of a trend!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think it's possible Arrow even earns them more money than TVD because of all those males that are so hard to capture. I don't know, it's just speculation. But it doesn't matter anyway, god knows the CW can use more than one great ratings performer.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If TTP is renewed it will definitely be moved. I think The Flash will air after Arrow next year.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It looks like they'll have a lot of options next year. With 4 certified hit shows, and the possibility that SPN & Arrow's spin-offs will be hits right out of the gate like The Originals, they could even try TTP and/or Reign in new slots that are still decent. I actually think that if they renew TTP, it would be a good idea to move it behind SPN. Airing before SPN surely helped TVD and Arrow in their first seasons, and I don't even think the SPN spin-off would need to be paired with its parent show because look how well TO is doing without TVD's support.

    ReplyDelete
  33. We all thought they would air The Originals after TVD and they didn't go for it. I think it's too soon to predict that. Let's see how the midseason shows do and what is renewed. As it stands, I am not even sure TTP can hold its slot for the entire season. It's also possible (and I am pulling for that) that it upticks to a level high enough that the CW thinks it's better not to mess up with the pairing and leaves it there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I wouldn't be totally shocked if they did a Monday of spin offs with Flash/SPN spin off to replicate what they had on Wednesdays last year.. They could then launch the third new show out of either Arrow or TVD.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Man, I sure wouldn't have thought a couple of months ago that The CW's future would look so bright. I mean, it's still early to declare that the network has pulled itself out of the mud altogether (there could always be major spring declines, etc.), but it's looking way better than I expected.

A spinoff Monday wouldn't be a bad idea, that's the last night they need to fix (well aside from Friday, but I don't think it's that important to them, it can serve as a graveyard for flop shows/home to ANTM and repeats). If I can get my wish, that TTP not only survives but doesn't go to Friday, I want to see what it can do behind SPN.
Alternately, it could be paired with TVD or TO - but if it's the latter, for the love of god, move TVD to 9pm and put TTP at 8pm (I feel that way regardless of which show is paired with TVD, actually). They've tried TVD as a lead-in so many times and it doesn't work. What have they got to lose by trying it as a lead-out, instead? The highest-rated show on the network for over 4 years isn't going bleed viewers en masse if it moves one hour later. Plus, SPN is proof that a lead-out can work just as well as a lead-in - like I mentioned in the previous comment, it did help launch TVD and Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I still disagree with your notion that TVD doesn't work as a lead-in. I cannot find any proof of that. I think it's always been a problem of the shows or, at best, of compatibility. Do we really think Nikita, The Secret Circle and Beauty and the Beast would be ratings hits if they were launched at 8 instead of at 9? I am strongly against the idea of moving TVD. They ought to keep trying. The 100 is a nice option to try at 9. I also think that 8pm is far less female skewing than 9 Thursdays, so they should keep the heavily female drawers TVD at 8 and launch something with male appeal, that could also retain females at 9 (The 100!).
Regardless, I don't see any chance of TTP being renewed and moved to a "serious" timeslot (like paired with SPN or TVD). If the show is renewed, it's either to be kept behind Arrow because it has improved a bit its relative position or to a Friday type of timeslot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Though I agree some more tenths would do wonders for Revolution chances, I think 1.5 is pretty good considering they had so much trouble with the 8PM timeslot and that only 2 shows on NBC breaks the 2s aside from The Voice, Chicago Fire and The Black List.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's true, but I think the number of shows that break a 2.0 is a bit misleading in this case. Revolution is performing at 78% of NBC's most recent drama average. That's a pure bubble show. When it happens, I find it more useful to think in terms of what NBC will do next fall. They are certain to have on their Monday-Thursday schedule: 3 hours of the voice, CF, The Blacklist, SVU, 2 hours of comedies, 2 hours of new shows. That's 10 hours out of 12. Then it comes down to the wire. I suspect these will be filled by a combination of TBL/Revolution/Parenthood/Chicago PD. From here on is anyone's guess. My personal guess is that TBL is held to replace the voice at midseason (no olympics next year) and that Chicago PD gets a renewal so it comes down to Parenthood vs. Revolution and I really don't feel like I can guess right now. If Revolution was preforming at, let's say, 1.7, then I would think it would be a clear cut save from Parenthood. As it stands, it's too close (especially considering Revolution is not owned by NBC and Parenthood is)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Parenthood is probably staying on Thursdays 10PM, nothing there has worked and Parenthood is the most stable sample they got for the timeslot, so I guess is not moving from there unless the ratings bomb at some point. Revolution could always move to Fridays 10PM if Crossbones fails or at 8PM to finally provide Grimm a true lead in. Also an option; get rid of 1 hour of comedy since it's clearly not working and move a drama to Thursdays either at 8PM or 9PM. If Black List holds on in the 3s, they could try to counter program TBBT, thought I admit it's risky, or stay with comedies at 8PM, then Black List and Parenthood. If not, then move Revolution to Thursdays and have Black List on Wednesday.
The point is, there is plenty of room for a stable player like Revolution to either stay on the same night or move to somewhere else; take The Voice out of the equation and Revolution is performing over 80% of NBC avarage, which is not half bad, though not great either and the stability factor surely plays a key role in its survival.
Anyway, we'll have to see what NBC is actually planing to do and we'll have a clearer image in spring, but for now things are not looking too bleak for Revolution just yet

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think you're too optimistic. For starters, I don't think Revolution would replicate the 1.4s everywhere on the schedule (for instance, not Thursdays at 10 most likely). I think Wednesdays at 8 is one of the easiest spots on TV in fall, since competition is very minimal and the only other drama competition is Arrow. The Middle is far from a powerhouse and then you have the x-factor (enough said)and still decent but modest and declining survivor. nothing even breaks a 2.5 most of the time. Don't misunderstand me, it's probably the bubble show for which I am rooting for the most, but I don't think it's in such a good situation as you think.

As for Parenthood, I am not ready to predict anything yet because I don't know what they will do with their comedies. But I doubt they cut them to 1 hour only, I don't think they have the guts to do that. They should but I don't see it happening. It's possible that they do something like Comedy| The Blacklist | Revolution on Wednesdays and Chicago PD | Chicago Fire | SVU on Thursdays, with the other hour of comedy on Tuesdays and new dramas Monday and Tuesday. As I said before, too many variables right now. I suppose your Friday at8pm idea is a plausible idea, but it depends on how invested they are on the show. I would feel better about that idea if it was owned by NBC. Its not and NBC seems keen on having low cost shows on Friday. I mean, Dateline can do low 1s on Fridays and that's what Revolution would do there, so what's the gain for them, since they don't get money from syndication afterwards? Hopefully I'm wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeeyyyy go arrow gooooo!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. While I also don't think Revolution would necessarily deliver the same ratings in another timeslot, this fact hasn't stop networks from moving bubble shows to other timeslots, specially the Friday night timeslot, which has been done by ABC (with Last Man Standing), FOX (with Fringe, Bones and Raising Hope) and CBS (with Hawaii 5-O). NBC was also ready to move some shows to Fridays last season, Community and Whitney, until they backed out due to the rating implosion of some of their new shows last season, but they were willing to put those shows on 8PM, even though they would probably have gone lower than 1.0. So I think they wouldn't mind trying Revolution there as it seems to have a really solid floor. With some budget cuts, the show could probably make it there with a 1.2, and considering how it only fell 0.3 from its premiere (which had the same ratings it delivered after The Voice) I think a move to Fridays could premiere to a 1.6-1.5 and fall to a 1.3-1.2 range or even remain steady a 1.4. Surely, there's a lot of "ifs" right there, and Revolution might implode on Fridays, but I do believe NBC is a bit happy that Revolution is steady (and that it didn't crash and burn ala Smash) and they would be willing to try another timeslot, if they not keep it in the same Wednesday timeslot. In that case, Revolution could lead out to The Black List and then Chicago PD, while moving SVU to 9PM Thursdays.
And I do believe that NBC will cut one hour of comedy; I mean, this is no longer an issue they can ignore. Sure, with The Office there it wasn't that pathetic, and this season they put their trust on MJF show and SSTW, but neither of them delivered; NBC must focus on the drama, and I think they are aware of that now

    ReplyDelete
  43. A lot of points there. Let me go about them individually:
    - I disagree with your notion that most of those Friday shows were ever true bubble shows. LMS was probably the last renewable comedy for ABC that year but it was still a pretty solid performer for struggling ABC Tuesdays. I think it was moved to Fridays with the sole purpose of establishing comedy there, same way MC debuted there. Not as a graveyeard. Same goes for Bones this season! It's going there solely to allow FOX to establish a presence on that night. H50, Fringe and RH are/were kept on Fridays for syndication, so that's a different league. I don't think any of these examples is comparable with Revolution
    - I do think that NBC is probably happier than they thought they would be with Revolution. It certainly hasn't smashed, at all, and that is a very good thing. Besides, as pathetic as that sounds, it will likely be their 4th highest rated show this week unless Grimm rebounds big tonight, and the 3rd one is only 0.1 higher, while the other two are voice lead-out shows. It's doing ok, for sure, I didn't want to argue the opposite.
    - Like I had said, maybe Revolution can go to Fridays, I don't think that's such a terrible idea. If both Dracula and Crossbones fail and they get can the producing company to reduce the licensee fee a bit, maybe they can do Revolution/Grimm/Dateline and call it a night. I am not sure how profitability works for Revolution so I am not ready to call that yet. It's a possibility I hadn't strongly considered before but yeah, it's possible. I still think though, that it will come down, again to it vs. Parenthood, but maybe not. For now, I still put both on the bubble. If Chicago PD flops, then I will guess differently I think. Another point is that if TBL continues to inch downards and approach Revolution... well, that's also a good thing. The season is long, let's see.
    - As for the comedies... well, I do thin the situation is crazily bad. They did have their supposedly two best comedies of the year pulling sub 1 ratings last night. I have no words for that. But I don't see scenes backstage that they will in fact reduce their comedy hours. They continue to order a lot of pilots. Yes, it could mean that it's just to make sure the two they pick are the best ones, but meh, I think they are likely to keep 2 hours regardless. Has any network ever gone from 4 hours to 1 year in 2 seasons? It would be insane. Probably not thursdays as it is but some combination of tuesdays, wednesdays and thursdays. I don't know. Also, let's not forget that NBC had years of consecutive flops on dramas too (the only dramas to reach 100 episodes from the last 5/6 years are what? Parenthood, Grimm and Chuck? That's crazy low) I still think they should do it but Ironside just showed them this season that dramas are far from a given too. I think for the sake of pride and all that they will keep 2 hours of comedy. About a Boy will probably be renewed with the voice lead-in and Parks should eke out a final season even if only as spackle. They will want to premiere at least 2 new comedies next fall I think.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I understand your points, you make a very good argument. I don't think Revolution is a given for next season, I think it's borderline between safe and bubble show, but not in the line of bubble and cancellation. I could be wrong, but I really believe that, given the state of the ratings, with only 2 succeses so far in the season, they might say "well, let's keep the one show that is steady". Also, while I don't like to predict SVU chances, the show is old, expensive, and it's rating are pretty close to Revolution now. Revolution might be cheaper (though not too much), and if it rates about the same I can see NBC saying "bye-bye" to SVU, but I wouldn't be certain about it. If NBC call it a quit on SVU, Revolution will likely be renewed, but as I said, I'm not entirely sure NBC wants to stop with SVU, just yet (it could scrap a final season if they want it to end).
I think the highest chances go to: 1)Revolution stays in its timeslot, 2) It moves to Friday, 3)It goes to 10PM after SVU.
I understand why you think NBC would keep the 2 hour comedy block, and though it's true they had a lot of drama troubles in the past, the avarage rating for NBC was way higher in the past than it is now; they don't want to keep sinking, and they can't depend on The Voice forever; Revolution proved that a show after The Voice can hold most of its rating on its own and if Blacklist continues to deliver 3s, it would probably do 2.5s in a second season on its own. Dramas fill 1 hour of television and it can be easier to produce than 2 comedies, so I think they will continue to launch dramas after The Voice and try to build a fundation until there comes the point where most of their shows can hold it together by their own (with ratings on the mids to high 1s to start). If NBC still wants to have 2 hours of comedy, there's the choice to have 2 comedies on Fridays as they initially planned with Community and Whitney last season, and try to do something to fix their Thursdays, which is the broken night all around.
I can't tell what NBC will ultimately do and what you say makes a lot of sense, in fact I can see them keeping the 2 hour comedy block next season, Parks will be renewed (and maybe Community too, for a final season) and we'll have to see what it boils down to, but they will have to do something about their Thursdays: they have to.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I get your argument, but I guess I feel that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" works both ways: if it DOES appear to be broke, you need to change something. Also, Nikita is a male-skewing show that didn't work at 9pm.
With Reign rising, it may be too early to tell if its pairing with TVD worked or not. It premiered much lower than the previous 3 shows, but it's been pretty stable so far. Of course, even if it starts hitting 0.7's regularly, I doubt that would satisfy The CW enough to leave it in its current slot. The TVD lead-in creates high expectations.
The thing with TVD is, I've seen many people suggest that fans of that show go online once an episode's aired to discuss it, rather than stick around to watch whatever comes on afterwards. That may seem like a long shot, but for a show like TVD that has such huge presence on social media (The CW's youtube channel even had some kind of special last year where they present select tweets from fans about the latest episode), I wouldn't discount it. On the other hand, the 8pm slot gives you the affiliates' lead-in which is usually high-rated and presumably doesn't have the same problem. In fact, I generally think new shows on The CW are better-off premiering at 8pm. Look at the pattern (from what I remember):

Shows that premiered at 8: TVD, Arrow, TCD, TO
Shows that premiered at 9: Hellcats, Nikita, HoD, TSC, Ringer, BatB, Emily Owens, Cult, TTP, Reign

With the exception of TCD, this makes a clear case for 8pm premieres. Of course, it's very much a "chicken and egg" issue: did the shows succeed because of the slot, or did The CW send more buzzy, promising shows like TVD to the 8pm slot in the first place?

Another thing worth considering is that TVD is very unlikely to take a hit from being moved. I could have seen the risk back when it got that 1.0, but it seems to have recovered and is as much as powerhouse as ever. Networks need to take advantage of these strong shows to help new or flailing ones. That's what we keep saying about ABC - since Scandal and GA are beasts, they need to bite the bullet already and move them so Revenge can slide over to Thursday. But they insist on not moving anything, and this overly rigid approach to scheduling dooms shows like Revenge.

All of that being said, if things continue on their current trajectory, here's the midseason schedule I expect:

    Mon
    8 - S-C
    9 - BatB

    Tue
    8 - TO
    9 - SPN

    Wed
    8 - Arrow
    9 - T100

    Thu
    8 - TVD
    9 - Reign

    Fri
    8 - HoD
    9 - TTP
    (possibly the other way around)

Obviously, what I WANT is for TTP to stay put and Reign be the one moved to Friday, but things don't seem to be going that way.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thank you, also nice to debate it with you. We have to agree to disagree on its chances now (even though we're both rooting for the same thing). As for SVU, I think there's no chance it's cheaper than Revolution. SVU's numerous syndication deals are probably enough to cover the production costs altogether, which means everything they get from ads would go directly as profit. No actual data to back this up but I truly believe so as it is one of the best performers in syndication. Also, the "let's keep at least the show that is stable argument" would also apply to Parenthood. Remember, because Parenthood is owned by NBC, any additional episodes would get additional revenue from syndication, thus making it cheaper. Parenthood also has virtually the same 18-34 ratings as Revolution everytime I've seen them this season, which means they are about the same in terms of producing ad revenue for NBC.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well, I see what you're trying to say but I still disagree. I still think it's been a problem of the shows, not of the slot or the lead-in. That idea that TVD fans go online to discuss the episode has no foundation for me. If that was the case, no way Beauty and the Beast would have been sampled at 1.2 when the entire fandom would allegedly be online discussing the premiere, which are always some of the most talked about episodes. That's a common myth IMO. In those instanes of common myths, I find it more useful to use individual examples such as this one from Beauty to dispute them because they show that the rule cannot be infered. You can also look at the first episodes from the secret circle. The TVD was giving it a shot, it just wasn't liking it. I don't think it's fair to blame it there, at all. I also disagree that TVD could not be hurt. It could be hurt and I don't see any point of doing so. The 9pm hour is very much harsher in 18-34s and W18-34 which is the type of audience that TVD seeks. I think part of the problem is that they continue to put there shows to appeal to that same audience and I don't see how is that possible to work with Grey's Anatomy and Glee sucking it all up. I think they need the perfect mix of a show that can keep enough portion of TVD audience around (appealing to some degree to W18-34) but that can also appeal the M18-34 that watch Arrow. That's why I think The 100 really should go in that slot. The hour is begging for some male presence since POI left it and the CW should captialize on that. Even FOX seems to realize it since it will try Rake in the hour in midseason. As for your 8pm argument, I think it's 100% the chicken and the egg. They put the most promising shows at 8, so of course they will do better. I think the 8pm lead-in is better than the lead-in of something like Hart of Dixie but not something better than Arrow or TVD. Someone at TVBTN published some numbers last year that clearly showed that. So the effect is very small. Most shows you mentioned had quality issues IMO and most also had incompatible lead-ins. I think had they done Supernatural-Arrow or Supernatual-The Originals things would have worked out just fine as well, whereas had they done Beauty-TVD I think things would have worked out worse than they did because TVD would have been hurt and Beauty would be performing at the levels it urrently is on Monday. Loose-loose situation in a high risk, low return situation.

  48. Happy for Arrow but scared for TTP? I love this show totally and I am happy they got an total season. Can't fight for BB and TTP. Seems like I am always loving the shows, nobody does in the USA... dammit
