Twitter Tips:

1. Only use two hash tags per tweet otherwise it might get filtered out in the count as spam
2. BatB doesn’t need a hash tag to trend so you can still put it in a tweet and it will count
3. If every US Beastie could tweet10-15 tweets with the hash tag BatB every day we could get on Twitter Trend Nielsen TV Ratings TOP 10 easily.

Facebook Tip: If you haven’t already been hitting up the Facebook page after every new aired episode, please do so; Facebook is about start being counted in the Trendrr reports late this month. Also be sure to swing by and leave a comment every chance you get.

Now on to your regularly scheduled recap…

Up for discussion this week is episode 2x06: Father Knows Best. This week’s episode was written by a character development extraordinaire and myth arc virtuoso respectively, Roger Grant and Brad Kern. This week also welcomed another newbie director into the Beastie family, Paul Kaufman. I found this to be a fantastic rebound combination after last week’s lackluster affair.

Well, I looks like The Power That Be, heard my fangirl complaint because we got some Jay Ryan abs action, and it was an unobstructed view from above. Now, that’s how you open an episode; Vincent, alone in his bed, with his shirt off. He’s remembering VinCat’s greatest hits all by himself (now if only he could remember all that JT has done and sacrificed for him, I’d be even more ecstatic). He’s cruelly awakened by a foghorn but hey, that’s to be expected when you live on a houseboat.

A happy Vincent rushes over to Cat’s place to see if what he dreamt were truly memories indeed. He catches Cat in heated physical altercation with her sparring dummy; seems that keeping the knowledge of whom Agent Reynolds is to herself is causing some internal stress. Vincent asks Cat about the things he remembered and they share a happy moment. Vincent gives Cat a lusty look to which she replies, she sweaty. Vincent offers her some advice about how to improve her kickboxing skills. Cat tries it and it works a little too well when Cat kicks him in the face.

Vincent excitedly tells Cat that he only has two missions left. When he’s done he wants to celebrate alone in the woods with her. Cat gets a dejected look and suddenly remembers that she is a cop. She doesn’t like Vincent being judge, jury and executioner. She goes on to him she can’t get excited about him killing two people. Beasts, Vincent corrects but Cat reiterates that they are still human beings despite what was done to them. Vincent seems less excited but tells Cat that she should go have a talk with Agent Reynolds before he sulks away.

Back at the 125th precinct Gabe is holed up in his office staring at wall of weird and digging through Muirfield research that JT left for him while he went on a retreat. Tess comes barraging per usual. They chat about Gabe wanting to find Vincent’s handler and how Vincent’s time might be running out. Gabe has found a name to track. Tess questions Gabe about why he hasn’t told Cat about his feelings. Gabe says he’s trying to save Vincent, he owes Cat (and VINCENT) that much.
Agent Reynolds aka Condor rings up Vincent to fill him in on the beast of the week. The guy’s name is Kurt Windsor and he’s sort of a big deal. They need this kill to be clean and precise, no mistakes. Not much is known about this beast. The beast is also paranoid and has a high quality alarm system. The window of opportunity is slim. Sounds like a bad mission begging to go sideways if you ask me.

Just as Agent Reynolds is wrapping up with Vincent, Cat shows up at his office. He hurriedly rushes Vincent off the phone and tries to play coy with Cat. But Cat just drops the bomb: she knows he’s her dad. She wants to have a cup of coffee with him and chat. A stunned Agent Reynolds nods and is left speechless (for once). Cat exits stage right.

Next, Vincent waits for the dead of night per his instructions from Agent Reynolds, to slip into the Windsor residence. Tori having stepped out into the balcony to enjoy so fresh, crisp autumn New York night air, leaves a door unlocked and Vincent ever so briskly whisks right passed her. Just as I was thinking this job was going a little too easy, Kurt senses Vincent and comes at him full throttle. Tori rushes back inside to witness the ruckus in all its scary glory. Out of nowhere Kurt goes into an ultra-rage mode and accuses Tori of letting Vincent in and nearly jokes her to death. A stunned and concerned Vincent breaks Kurt’s grip around Tori’s neck and speeds away with her into the night.

The following morning Cat and Agent Reynolds actually have that cup of coffee and a chat. His paternal instincts are in overdrive as well as sneaky side. He gives Cat just enough information while trying to pry more out of her. Luckily, Cat is reluctant and is holding her cards close to the vest as well. He comments on how she has her mother’s eyes (and the Potterhead in me squees, just a bit, not to mention, I’ve always thought that myself). He explains the situation about Thomas adopting her and respecting Vanessa’s wishes. He goes on to explain that he had every intention of being in her life after she turned 18 but after her mother died, he didn’t want to come across as opportunistic and callous. So, he just let her be but watched over her as well. A news story breaks up the father-daughter bonding time. There’s been a high profile kidnapping and there’s a $5 million dollar reward. They both spring into action to leave but Agent Reynolds does manage to get into Cat’s head and cast some doubts about Vincent before all is said and done.

Cat rallies the troops and they connect the dots about the kidnapping and it being part of Vincent’s mission to kill Kurt Windsor. Tess tries to prepare Cat for the possibility that Vincent might be the last name on the list but Gabe brushes that under the rug and Cat is too focused to even be bothered really. Cat heads over to Vincent’s houseboat and finds an earring that belongs to Tori (or at least it better belong to Tori). She’s not able to snoop too much before Kurt and his small army arrives and tears the place to shreds. She manages to get out sight unseen but has to do so by taking a dip in the rancid river that is the Hudson.

She heads back to the 125th and fills Tess in on the details. Tess assess that the smartest move would be for Vincent to use Tori as leverage. Cat defends Vincent and says he probably saved her. That he’s been all about saving the innocent even if he had to kill the beasts in the process. She also goes on to address the issue of Tess’s Vincent hate and reaffirms that he is what is good for her. Once Gabe is all caught up on the latest events, he pitches his flat lining idea (much to my dismay, as well as Tess’s and later on Vincent’s). Cat of course jumps on the bandwagon. She really wants to help Vincent complete a mission that doesn’t involve him killing someone.

Tori has been taken to a place deep in the woods. She is tied up to a tree while Vincent preps the area with sharp, pointy spears. He tries to get Tori to calm down and explains the situation to her. He didn’t kidnap her, he saved her. She mentions that she saw him beast out, so that lead her to believe otherwise. Vincent provides some insightfulness and says that she was always a captive under her father’s watch. Vincent explains he didn’t ask to be a beast but her father did. Vincent goes onto explain why her father has been marked for death. Tori gets it deep down but he still her father. To prove his point, Vincent removes a tracking device from her arm, much to Tori’s astonishment. Vincent didn’t remove because he wanted to lure Kurt to the spot they were at.

Cat gets the bright idea to try to talk to Kurt and offer her help. Agent Reynolds is there as well. They go up to have a chat with Kurt and while they’re waiting Agent Reynolds tries to pry about Cat’s boyfriend. She once again defends Vincent and states that he’s good to her. Kurt of course turns down their offer of help and shoes them out of his residence. But not before Cat recognizes Vincent’s stuff and puts two and two together about where he took Tori. He took her to the place they were going to go to celebrate his “retirement”. She rushes off and leaves Agent Reynolds behind.

Vincent and Tori discuss the woes of being a beast and what keeps him sane. The thing that keeps him sane being Cat. They really have a great chat, so much so that an awkward hug happens. As Vincent hugs Tori his eyes glow a different shade and then he senses someone in the woods near them. Of course it’s Cat and of course she’s gotten tangled up in his trap. Vincent rushes to her rescues just in the nick of time before a spear impales her eye. She sees Tori and I honestly don’t know what that expression on her face was supposed to be. She warns Vincent that Kurt is not coming alone and that he needs to get of the woods. Kurt shows up hot on their trail. But everyone is gone. His guards note that there are three sets of tracks. Kurt accurately guesses that someone came to warn him. His bodyguards ponder what the kidnapper could possibly want. Kurt replies that the kidnapper wants him but he’ll rip the guy to shreds at the first chance he gets.

Cat and Vincent take Tori back to an empty lair. Tori suggests that she call her dad. Vincent is down for that so that the call can be tracked and he can have the element of surprise once more to be able to trap him. Cat lightly scolds him that in the woods he was going to spear him not trap him. Vincent asks what else could be done. Cat pitches the flat lining idea. Vincent is sick of that idea and notes that it has only worked once. She thinks that Kurt might go for it if it means that he gets to have his daughter back. Even Tori is not sure if that is incentive enough. Cat and Tori go on to have a heart to heart about what it means to have a beast in your life while Vincent is on the defensive and is looking every door and window to fortify their position.

Cat heads over to Kurt’s place and makes him a deal. She tells him she knows what he is. She tells him that there’s a possibility of death but hey so what, why not, if it means getting your daughter back. Kurt waits until the last possible second to take the deal. But he does indeed take the deal.

Gabe is now at the liar as has it all prepped for flat lining surgery. He explains the procedure and how it worked on him. They lock him in some nearly inescapable handcuffs and begin what needs to be done. Kurt wonders what will become of him after is fully human. Probably prison but Cat thinks that is still better than the alternative and at least his daughter can visit him there. Kurt is skeptical but is willing to try. But first he wants to see Tori in case it doesn’t work. Vincent leads Tori out and she goes to hold her father’s hand. In a code yellow spike from hell, Kurt beasts out and breaks free. This leads to a pretty intense beast off that results in Vincent ripping Kurt’s beating heart out. Everyone in the room is shocked, as am I. I wasn’t aware we were watching ‘Once Upon a Time’ or maybe more aptly since it’s The CW, ‘The Vampire Diaries’.

A little while later, Gabe fills Tess in and she has the most understated reaction ever. She simply states that it seems like Vincent has taken a step backwards. She ponders how Cat is going to take it. Gabe chimes in with his two cent and a surprisingly non-judgmental way as well. I’ll chalk it up to shock.

Agent Reynolds officially becomes a part of the show and earns his stalking badge as he catches Cat off guard at her favorite coffee shop and orders her exact, overly complicated cup of coffee. She accuses him of staking her out. He sees he isn’t that he just took a chance and was pleasantly surprised to see her there. Un-huh. OK! He tries to get her to open up to him but Cat manages to stay somewhat guarded. Agent Reynolds once again manages to get deep into Cat’s psyche by asking her questions that would lead her to think maybe just maybe Vincent is a lost cause and isn’t getting better.

With all of the thoughts that Agent Reynolds has left churning in her head, Cat heads over to talk it out with Vincent as delicately as possible. She tries not showing how scared she is off and he tries to not think about whether or not his humanity is indeed lost for good. They tentatively hug but both are silently brooding and trying to hide their concern so that they can comfort each other.

The last scene was not a VinCat scene, it was of Tori. She comes home to her fabulous empty home and is of course sad. She glances into the mirror and notices something different about her face. Upon further inspection, her eyes shift and glow, looks like she’s a beast and didn’t even know it. Or did she? Fade to black…

Grade: B+

Reason: I’m just going to say it. No JT, AGAIN! He’s on a retreat? Really? But we’re just going to use the lair in his absence? RUDE! No, JT? Then we don’t use the lair. What’s wrong with Gabe’s pad? Or an abandoned warehouse (there should be plenty in New York City)? Moving on… I really liked this episode. I loved the chemistry between Ted Whittall and Kristin Kruek as well as the cat and mouse game between their characters Agent Reynolds and Cat. It’s nice to know that Thomas Chandler knew the whole time. I would have hated to add cuckolding to list of sins that have been pinned on Vanessa Chandler.

I loved the addition of Tori (I think we can safely assume that she’s not the love interest, so breathe easy for now my lovelies). I think that the character of Tori, at least in this episode, helped both Vincent and Cat express things they wouldn’t have necessarily been able to otherwise. Very little Tess was featured in this episode as well.

The character of Gabe is really racking up a lot of screen time and it’s starting to take away from the established characters. I love Sendhil. I love the character of Gabe. But they need to stop shoving him in over face at every turn. They also need to either give VinCat a full time out or put them back together once and for all. These yo-yo games of the heart are really irking a lot of the Beasties, myself included.

The beast of the week was not a man I was the least bit interested in, nor did I want him to be saved. They were too many vagaries and nothing made sense. I know that it’s supposed to be a mysterious arc that will get unraveled and all but the set up was a little shaky.

But all in all, this was a fast paced, well plotted and engaging episode. I loved the visual effects for the beast modes. Also, the jaw dropping moment of Vincent ripping out that guy’s heart was bananas and unexpected as heck. I love when Beauty and the Beast surprises me.

Awards

Character of the Night

Tori – I was all set to not like this character for whatever reason. But I was pleasantly surprised with this character introduction.

Favorite Moments

1. Cat kicks Vincent while training
2. Vincent saves Cat from being speared
3. Sally (the blue mustang) makes her triumphant return
4. Vincent in his bed with no shirt (don’t judge me, I’m human)
5. Vincent remembering VinCat’s greatest hits

Favorite Lines

1. Cat: How much money is too much money?
2. Kurt: You’re either really brave or really stupid.
Cat: Well, I’m not stupid.
3. Cat (picking up an earring): This better be Tori’s.
4. Cat: I know my beasts.

Favorite Scenes

1. VinCat kickboxing training session
2. Vincent and Tori have a heart to heart in the woods
3. Cat and Tori have a heart to heart in the lair
4. Cat and Agent Reynolds have coffee (both times)
5. Cat makes the beast of the week an offer to save him in exchange for his daughter
6. Tori sees her beastly reflection in the mirror

Best Character Interactions

It was a tie between Tori and Vincent and Tori and Cat. I’ve very smitten with this character. I’m flush with excitement at all the potential this character has. She could be Vincent’s confidante. She could Cat’s little sister. She could a complete surprise altogether and be playing Team Beastie. But right now, she brings a balance to the show, that Tess and JT, an avatar for the audience. Tori gets to be told all the things out protagonist can’t say to any other character, allowing us much needed insight.

  1. I thought this episode was kinda boring. There need to be more of a story line then the beast of the week that die at the end. I hope the story line pick up next week.

  2. I'm going to try and keep it brief because, you voice everything I'm thinking, for that reason Lilith please don't change a thing, Thanks for sending out positive vibes it worked, cause goodness that opening scene with V in bed just wow, I think Tori is going to be tugging at Vincent's beast side I think she is her fathers daughter, I think she is going to be not so nice, I'm trying not to keep rambling on just know I enjoy your reviews/ recap keep up the great work we beasties appreciate your wonderful insight, Thanks!!!!

  3. Thanks for your review as always very spot on...the first scene fantastic, of course. No JT again..what is with that!! Still do not trust Gabe....

  4. I think your recaps/reviews are just great the way they are. And I agree on almost everything. ESPECIALLY the opening scene! They should start all eps like that!! :)

I have a question tho. I don’t remember your great reviews last season, so are you a new beastie or new to SpoilerTV? Because last season I was under the impression no one at Spoiler watched and that’s why we never made it in the “Scene of the week” polls etc.

  5. I agree. I think while she may start out nice, I think she will become dangerous in the end. Probably more as her beast side comes out I guess. I’m really curious as to why or how she “engages” the beast side in V and likely her father. Is it touch? V hugged her and his eyes turned, she touched her dads hand and he changed. Coincidence??

Well put :) and I agree. One minute it seems like they're on track to get back together, then either the storyline doesn't follow through or one of them pulls back. One step forward two steps back - its a dance I am not interested in seeing.

  7. there's a reason I'm sure but it's very disheartening when the writes KNOW that 98% of beasties watch for VinCat, then to top that off the heart of the show, JT is getting sidelined for Gabe. SMH.

  8. I'm not a new beastie, but I am new to writing for Spoiler TV. I do believe I am the only one on staff who watches the show.

  9. Thank you so much. Even when an episode has issues, there's still a lot of good things and the storylines still have so much potential that I can't even stay mad.

  10. Thanks for coming back week after week. I know Tori not being a love interest is wishful thinking but I for one would find it much more interesting if they didn't play it that way. I actually want for Tori to be pulling a long con to infiltrate team Beastie. But on the other side, Cat could use a little sister who knows about beasts and Vincent could use a protege to help channel his beastly urges and powers via mentoring.

  11. Yes, I'm over the beast of the week formula already. But next week looks really good.

  12. Thank you!! So true!! Sometimes I feel confused & overwhelmed, but ultimately I love this show and am totally obsessed! I do not see Tori as love interest..really do not want to go there again..too predictable and not interesting to me. I think she will be trouble but in other ways.

  13. Lilith thanks for your great review. I liked the first scene of a shirtless V too. What a way to start an ep! And I miss JT and his funny lines. It's about time to bring the bromance back. I'm afraid Tori will be a big problem for Vincat. I think, because she's born with the Beast DNA, she's gonna have a big influence on other beasts like V. That that's the reason his eyes were glowing and her father was beasting out. V is much more violent than he ever was (I think because of Tori) and he doesn't even know for himself yet what's triggering him. And will she team up with them or wants revenge for V killing her father? It leaves us with a lot of questions and theories. I love that about #BatB!

  14. I loved your recap of Father Knows Best, JT needs to be a much bigger character in the up coming episodes. I think the pace of this season and the complex dynamic of all the characters are so much richer than season one though. I love the epic love but I think this season is so much richer in the story from week to week. We know they will end up together but to ignor the complexity of their relationship would be wrong. I love the complexity that writers have developed between each of the characters.

I do want to mention that the character of Tori is awsome. I think that her dynamic is she brings out the instint beastly side of Vin without knowung it and will bring out his human side, humanity. This will be awsome to watch but Cat i believe will struggle with this dynamic and get Vin in bug trouble without him being able to control.

  15. completely agree!! :)

That explains why it wasn't a good episode... like the previous one. When the people behind the screen change....the episodes are not good. Why do they do that?

  18. Great review, as always. I've never really had a show that actually makes my heart race. I was trying to figure out the reason why Vincent's eyes turned yellow when he hugged Tori and what everyone is saying about her bringing out his beast side is an excellent theory.

  19. What are the writers thinking now?We all love J.T. and were assured he would be on more, but Gabe is taking away from J.T.and Tess.I miss the relationships from last season. There is very little romance and the writers are forgetting this is Beauty and the Beast.I love the actions scenes, but bring back some of the relationships that made this show so great please!

  20. People leave the show for whatever reason and there needs to be a certain number of writers in the rotation so things get done. Other times choice directors aren't available or don't want to work on the show. Just the ebb and flow of the TV biz. I actually thought that Roger Grant would mellow out Brad Kern for this episode but it was the other way around and not balanced at all, but who wants to actually have to try and correct their boss? Yikes!

  23. Roger AND Brad wrote this one?? That makes me shocked that I didn't love it ~ even with that ABSolutely droolworthy opener followed by VinCat cuteness ♥ Still heaps better than last week. I had absolutely no fears about Tori in the love interest capacity UNTIL I watched this episode and........ I didn't like her one bit! Partly because of the drawn out Vincent scenes with her in the woods where he was so touchy feely with her ~ I went a little Code Yellow myself when he was comforting her! I was totally fine with last week's FLESHBACK (not a typo) but the vibe I got from Vincent and Tori unsettled my VinCat heart. I think I must blame Jay Ryan for this ~ he has chemistry with her darnit. On top of that I saw next week's preview pic of Tori by Vincent's side confronting Cat and eew Gabe. NO. OK enough of her.
Apart from my misgivings about Tori I enjoy whatever recap review style you have going on here especially your always POSITIVE opener re ratings and social media ~ you deserve CUPCAKES for that alone Lilith! ♥ Honestly I'm not altogether sure whats the difference btw a recap or a review so all I can say is if someone is just summarizing the whole ep again it bores me! I just want to get to the reviewer's (A-ha! Guess I just answered my own question with this) opinion so my favorite part of your writeup is the 2nd half of it from your grade onwards ~ keep doing what you're doing ~ cheers! :-)

  24. And I know some people are struggling with the murky nature of Vincat,
but that was the intent according to NYCC interviews with JR and KK and
it makes sense to me because they are struggling to be together when
most normal couples would have stopped trying already, but the
connection and love is there/so strong so they fight it sometimes and
don't other times. It is hard to watch just because I love Vincat so
much and it is frustrating. but that is the point. How do you stop
loving someone or rushing to help them or support them? They are
conflicted because the are facing so many conflicts and none of them
brought on by themselves so it sucks. And how could they be totally
together, Vincent isn't even himself so of course they are wishy washy!
It's realistic to me, but I blame Daddy Reynolds for their probs. Plus,
if they do intend to break them up...the only way they could do it was
to torture fans into actually conceding that a break up for a short
while would be okay...otherwise fans would never have gone for it
because Vincat was too strong to go on a break. And I think
feelings-wise they are still strong, but it's like sometimes you just
need a break to breathe. Plus, them being on a break will be different
because they love each other so much and like to help one another so I
think they'll be Vincattish, but with more angst and less touching for a
short while. LOL Then again, they might just struggle through it and
stay together even though it is costing them both so much. We shall
see. Regardless they will be back together before we know it-solid
couple status because they are just too good together (the characters
and actors) and the writers KNOW it's Vincat that makes beasties
obsessed. Like you like other aspects of the show, but you obsess about
    Vincat. lol

  25. As always a great recap Lilith. I'm a potterhead too and loved the "You have her eyes" line. I also expected to dislike Tori on sight but surprised I didn't. For now she is a good addition to the show, but I do think there is something about her beast that will be what is bringing the darker side out in Vincent. Also if you aren't going to have JT in an episode I agree don't use his place. It just made it all the more obvious he wasn't in the epi and could have been. The majority of the Beasties watch BatB for JT and the JT & Vincent bromance as much as they do for VinCat. Not to mention that JT would of had some good one liners during the flatlining, beast fighting, heart ripping sequence. Speaking of one liners Catherine had some of the best this episode and Kristin delivered them perfectly. I really like Tess and I like Tess and Cat together working cases and as friends, but recently all they use her for is to knock Vincent to Cat and to constantly bring up Gabe crushing on Catherine (enough of that already).

Father Knows Best was great episode and so much better than last week and I hope they keep getting better as they get the character's back stories revealed to us. It was also nice to see Paul Johansson guest star as Kurt, I watched him for years on One Tree Hill and getting his heart ripped out on BatB was a surprisingly fun scene to watch, should of happened to him on OTH!

Again I enjoy your recaps very much and I wouldn't change a thing about them!

  26. I'm going to be completely honest....I am just not feeling it. After the let down on how the writers handled Gabe's resurrection (Shot 7+ times & brought back to life using a convenient defibrillator- am I the only one who finds this explanation a bit silly), the very 'ho-hum' way Cat discovers who her father is, the under-utilization of Agent Renolds of him mostly reduced to being a phone call (isn't Cat's dad a little bit more concerned with Vincent getting his memories back? I'm not sensing any real threat, danger, or urgency here), Tess's character reduced to repeating the same thing week after week....etc. I haven't even mentioned the time-frame inconsistencies (Cat's High School reunion, Vincent's nephew age, Mama Chandler's hook up with Cat's father..etc) or their 'out of the blue' revelations & changing their own canon (Vincent being a fireman/ Vincent hooking up with Gabriela/ Cat being into 'bad boys' before her mother's tragic death...etc). Where is J.T.? Why is he being sidelined?
I don't even want to get started on how they are handling 'VinCat's' romance (is there one?) This show needs to show rather than ‘tell’. I want to see Vincent's love for Catherine with actions and not because I’m told 'they are meant to be' or they are 'Epic' end game. Sorry, but saying something is 'Epic' doesn't make it true...show it (btw I hate the word 'Epic'; its become so overused). I need to see it because right now I honestly don't see what makes Cat different from all his other girlfriends...maybe that she is overly desperate, obsessive, & persistent to a fault. It also doesn't help Cat slept with Vincent and it didn't trigger anything (just a thanks for the lay) only to later see Vincent remember an old flame by a simple touch! Ouch! Seems to me Gabriela has more of a soul-mate connection seeing how quickly Vincent remembered her and smiled as he recalled their love making while with Cat 'Nada' (nothing)! *sigh* Sadly, I've reached a point where I could care less if Cat and Vincent break up (never thought it possible). I actually prefer it. Are they even together? I'm not sure. So, how can I even get remotely excited abut the upcoming Tori arc after all of this. Not thanks, I think for the first time, I'm just going to read spoilers first and then decide whether or not I want to watch the episode :-/

  27. Love your recap, and love the current format the way it is - with its summary of fav scene, fav moments etc. And thank u for the tips in the beginning. you are really helping us beasties and i appreciate that :)

  28. Just give me a straight up review. I watched the show I know the deal. A little proof reading wouldn't hurt either.

  29. BTW love the name Lilith ( it's my daughters name)

  30. I like your recap & review personally. Still waiting to see what the next curve holds. Missing JT way too much, not enough balance & agree the 'beast of the week" should either be developed over a couple of eps or move on to something else. Can't imagine vincent is the last beast, just seems too quick and not sure why Reynolds would want to get rid of him, beast could be very useful for the FBI. Wish they would just fix the VinCat thing, not feeling it this season like last. Was ok ep none this season have been favorites yet, still watching S1 to get my JT VinCat fixes. But will hold on until the end. I really like your tips on what to do on social media, thank you for those!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The reason I asked about the format is because most writers are moving on to a "review" only format. But since my Beasties here on Spoiler actually interact with me every week I thought I would just ask you guys.
Yeah, I saw a lot of confusion about it because of all of the PCA voting, just wanted to clear it, because it's still really important to make sure BatB is trending on as many social media sites as possible.
Thanks as always for stopping by to read and comment.

  32. OK, thanks for the feedback.

  33. Thank you for reading and commenting. I want us Beasties to be as social media savvy as possible. Every little bit helps.

  34. I know what you mean, the title from last week's recap & review (Plot holes, continuity errors, bad judgment and easy fixes, oh my!) could apply to almost every episode this season so far. But I try to focus on the good and keep the Beastie morale up. I like the VinCat ship for what it does for the fandom (unity, too many ships or even just two can make a fandom nasty (see SPN and TVD on Tumblr for examples, LOL). I'm not a shipper personally but I do like deep, interesting and complex relationships in general, romantic or otherwise and that's what last season was all about, it's what drew me in, Cat and Tess, Vincent and JT and VinCat. Throw in the mystery of Muirfield, Evan Marks (really Max Brown, let's just be honest) and then they got Sendhil to join the cast and there was no turning back. The writers' room was a lot tighter last season, agreed. But I have hope. I think they started writing the beast of the week to replace the cop case of the week as to ease our transition out of a case of the week format period and implement a more serialized approach. Which I'm all for. I address a lot of your concerns on the podcast but try to keep it upbeat here, because goodness knows Beasties need something positive to read on Tuesdays because our ratings have been so dreadful this season thus far. I hope you reconsider, and decide not abandon ship, if not for the show, cast and crew, then maybe for your fellow Beasties? Hope to see you back here next week.

  35. Thank you so much. Yes, seeing Paul J. (I love OTH, too!) get his heart ripped was very cathartic after enduring all his shenanigans on OTH, LOL! Everyone on the podcast loves JT (we often joke we should change the title to 'We Luv JT'). He really is the heart of the show as well as the glue. I was feeling Gabe in the beginning but now that they are literally shoving him in the audience's face and not really explaining all the things we're dying to know (how did his human side survive 7+ shots, how did his beast side die (that's not the way DNA, even "mutated" DNA works). Gabe silently crushing on Cat would be fine. Tess, should NOT be so comfortable with Gabe. I don't know why they are trying (and succeeding unfortunately) in making us dislike Tess. I tried to defend her up until this point, but her encouraging Gabe to tell Cat how he feels, who is in a relationship already, is breaking Girl Code #5. Over her.

  36. Yeah, I thought the episode was tons better than last week. I like when they introduce new elements to the show. I know that VinCat in the end is unsinkable. This is a drama, first and foremost, so yeah, there's going to be unneeded love triangles and obstacles, I'm good with that. But at least have everything else make sense, be cohesive and don't shortchange us on the JT. And what happened to that promises of fleshing out Tess?

Gabe can take a seat in the back for awhile, geez, I love Sendhil but if this is the material they're going to give him, not interested. I didn't see any chemistry between Tori and Vincent personally, I see their relationship as big brother/little sister, or at the very least "pack" members for lack of a better description. I might play around with the recap format a little next week so you guys can compare and contrast to see which you like better.

PS: can I borrow "fleshback"? I love it!

  37. Thank you!

  38. Believe me I know. They need to be resigned that this show's sweet spot for the demo is women 18-49, point blank. Stop trying to force elements that don't fit, it is taking a huge toll on the storytelling. The pacing of the show is too fast. But I guess they are trying to wrap things up (in fear of cancellation) while still trying to tell the story they set out to tell. The production value is the biggest improvement this season. I feel that they were premature about the placement of Hothead. All of these episodes should have come before it, now everything after it just seems off and disappointing. I was promised a better Tess and more JT...waiting (and it sucks).

  39. I'm a masochist :-) so I won't drop the show just because I don't like all S2 changes . I understand that any shows need changes and new ideas but I don't like inconsistency and confusion. The two seasons are totally and brutally disconnected . S2 is more about "who's next beast" than "Who am I " , except episode 4 I don't recall any emotional meaningful moment re-connecting Vincent to his past , family ,friends (Hello JT !) unless we want consider Gabriela an "epic" moment as much as Catherine finding out about his real dad from an old photo - 2 stupid seconds for the most important discovery of her life ? Wow ! What is really hitting on my nerves is the annoying feeling that Batb writers / producers and actors feel ashamed of things they have done in season 1 which is becoming more and more a sort of rejected creature by the very people who are supposed to love and care for it . And right now THIS is
the biggest misunderstanding : I'm still watching Batb BECAUSE of S1 and DESPITE the crazyness of S2. And no sorry , comparing S1 chemistry with S2 is a losing game. VinCat 2.0 are just a pale copy of VinCat 1.0 . Poor acting ? Bad direction ? Lazy writing ? Bad storyline choices ? Not sure who's fault but something is off . Unfortunately S1 memories cannot keep them alive forever....

  40. Lilith your reviews are great as they are, I love your personal comments insets.
I agree with you on everything, this ep was breathtaking. JR owns the screen in all scenes, he is an amazing actor. Gabe, Tess and Reynolds are just going through the motions, every week the same lines for them.
What astounded me was the easy explanation of Cath´s real father. Here the writers/producers/actors have been teasing us for 6 months about how hard this is for Cath. Then we got a perfectly normal explanation in 30 seconds; fling, adoption, better not tell anytning. It just shows that those promos and declarations are always deliberately misleading.
Thanks again for your lovely reviews.

  41. I think you have good points Ex. I'd enjoy a review and less of a recap too, but I think you could ask/ give advice in a nicer way. It wouldn't hurt to be nicer and less demanding :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks for another great review Lillith! You always seem to give a perspective on the episode that I may not have thought about. Personally, I liked this episode more than I liked "Reunion" I hope that they're done with the whole "beast of the week" thing too...I didn't really enjoy that aspect of the episodes. I am intrigued however with the addition of Tori, and what her character will bring to the table. Will she be friend or foe?? I am also really missing JT!!! This season has been very unpredictable so far, and I am constantly surprised with the things Vincent does and the choices he makes. Jay Ryan is absolutely killing it this season - he was going for a Jekyl & Hyde effect, and I think he more than nailed it!!! However, I hope the old Vincent finds a way of resurfacing....I miss our VinCat and would love to see more of the Romance we saw in S1. I know it's happening a little more slowly than we would like, but we just need to have faith....the end game will always be VinCat after all. :-) Looking forward to the next episode!

  43. Love the tittle... I like the recap/ review combo two for the price of one as I am a bargain shopper. Beside you have great insight and you really do feel the general heart beast of beasties *;)* when it comes to the direction of the show and/or development of character. So it opens the door for discussion of opposing or similar view points as we beasties are an opinionated bunch, I say that with love.
One thing I will say again since it has importance of Code Yellow level...No JT is unacceptable!!! They need to fix that seriously! JT and also Austin is the heart of the show! (am done)
I also love the idea of a podcast campaign!
I can not wait to tweet during the hiatus. In conjunction with voting for BATB we will relive the BATB experience as if we are watching it for the first time. Now who's ready for some thanksgiving Turkey!!

  44. After hearing all the hype about this new Tori, she was totally underwhelming. The bleating "help, someone help" was pathetic. The fake crying without a tear and the complete expressionless monotone was annoying. Thank goodness JR could handle the scenes by himself. Even at the end, a tiny gasp was all we heard after her father had his heart ripped out. What a poor attempt to replace Bridget Regan. It is an insult to her character to have this bland, lackluster replacement . But at least we don't need to worry about a triangle. Not even the best writer could make her interesting enough for our hero. Of course maybe she was written this way and there is more to be seen later. Vincent sure felt the beast underneath. If she was written to be devoid of emotion and expression, then I apologize.
What makes this story special is the beautiful love and chemistry between Vincent and Catherine. The writers seem to have forgotten that. I love the action and the drama and of course seeing how JR is bringing this new, bolder, more dangerous Vincent to life. Bbut the entire center of the story is still their love story. Episodes 1-3 still had it, but then they went with "me time" and annoyance at ruining the reunion then this episode with the tepid back story about Reynolds, another one who lies to her that she believes.
The production team must know that this is a special love story and they are destroying it. I just don't understand why.

  45. The title is from a song I love as well as one of the best Lost episodes ever, nothing like sneaking your other passions into something else you love, LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I agree I love the material they're giving Jay and he's killing it but at the same I feel like they are tarnishing the character of Vincent. The show was billed as an "epic love story" so I can understand why people are upset with the direction it does feel a little like they changed horses midstream. I have faith and I just know they have a reason and a huge reward for all the torment.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, easy fixes abound and that's disappointing but maybe they're glossing over things to get to the good stuff. Fingers crossed.

  48. 100% agree with your post. The "actress" needs to go back to singing,
because I was totally underwhelmed by her performance. Other than
looking like BR's clone, she is uninteresting and totally boring to
watch. Frankly, I don't care about her. We are losing screentime for JT
& Tess because this chick is going to stick around for a while and
possibly be a regular. TORI PLEASE GO AWAYNOW! You're acting bores me to
tears because apparently you only have 1 facial expression. Your crying
act in the woods would've had more impact if you actually had some
tears streaming down your face, even JR looked really awkward trying to
comfort her. I'm trying to figure out what the writers are doing this
season. I'm so disappointed in how this season is turning out. I love
the show, but it seems to have lost it's way. I want to see VinCat
together, I miss the chemistry, heat, and passion between the two. Their
chemistry just seems off to me this season & I'm so sad about it. I
understand changes, but all these changes are seeming to backfire on
them. The only thing done well this season is Vincent 2.0 and his
beastliness..everything else falls flat. Please bring back some of the
    essence we had in S1!!

  49. Lilith, where is the fantastic music?
Season 1 had great music in almost every episode. Where is the music in this season? Bring back whoever made the music decisions!

Remember? At least 12 unforgettable tracks in 22 episodes.

  50. Crys, thank you for your reply. I really miss the dynamic of this unique love story. Both JR and KK compliment each other. They both can dominate any scene they are in. Together they overwhelm the screen and just enthrall me. Instead we are subjected to superfluous characters and poor acting.
But the writers seem to want to go gangbusters to break up the most beautiful love story on TV today. The entire story is about Vincent/Catherine but instead they ridiculously dance around it. No wonder there is talk of cancellation, they seem unaware that they are bringing it on themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Lilith, you said "The writers' room was a lot tighter last season," May I respectfully disagree? They were really good for the first 14 episodes but then lost focus entirely during the last 8. The only consistent thread throughout was their determination to make Sendhil a leading character and making all the stories about him. We learned more about him including having him shed a tear when recounting the killing of his mother. The only other consistency was using the word "normal' In one episode, the dialog contained that word 13 times. Their continuity was all over the place. One major flaw stood out to me. In "Heart of Darkness" Vincent was captured by Muirfield and promised a grizzly death by his captors. The beginning scene of the next episode "playing with Fire" Vincent tells Catherine he was hiding for 10 years and nothing happened. What? During Partners in Crime, the writers seemed to forget that he had special powers, so he didn't hear Tess behind him. Then he got lost in his "safe haven" and ended up stuck in a dead end allowing her to shoot him. Really sloppy writing. They started a lot of story lines just to let them die an unrequited death. What happened to the story line in episode "Insatiable" Someone was trying to set Vincent up. I could point out thousands of plot holes, mistakes in the sets and more. This season they have cleaned that up for the most part.

  52. Not every episode had music so this is normal. We've had great music from 201-206.

I started to read all of your reviews from the 1st episode of S2 and I must say I love them. It gives me more insight and more understanding. I watch this show on the internet because in Europe it is not on television yet and although my english is pretty good sometimes it is going too fast to understand all of what they are saying and the meaning of it. So keep up the good work and I will read it from now on. The only thing I don't understand why are they not promoting this show more. We have now sneak peaks of ep7 and a short synopsis of ep 8 and some photos. nothing yet on lets say ep 9, 10 and 11 with synopsis and photos. I think that will help a lot and that will keep the fans awake.... just my idea...

    ReplyDelete
  55. The music in 201 - 206 is rather bland. Nothing as special as the ones I listed.
The music in season 1 really enhanced the scenes and made them unforgettable.

    ReplyDelete
  56. thanks a bunch.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hey, thanks for stopping by and reading. Bummer that they don't have it your country yet. Yes, promotion of the show is lackluster, it's a money thing. The writers only have up to episode 12 or 13 written for now and we'll only be getting 9 episodes (so 3 left) until the US begins it's winter break when all tv series casts and crews go home and take a break. Plus if they put too much out it would get lost in the shuffle. PS: What part of Europe, if I may ask.

I live in the Netherlands and at this moment I am not sure if we will have S2 of BATB on television.
You say 9 episodes until the winter break? I though it were only 8 episodes before the winter hiatus. But I am glad with one more....

  60. Totally agree with you two! I think that what we need is mor JT/Vincent, Vincet/Cat moments and JT/VIncent/Cat and Tess! I don't care about Tori for me was like some other girl in the show (no important) but I'm really sick of Gabe I just want him out of the show! He is boring, annoying and I just don't like him (Just Gabe not the actor, I don't even know his name :S) lol. Hope we get more scenes of JT and I guess that I never will say this but I prefer Evan over Gabe (I dind't like Evan last season)

  61. Totally agree. I think that the writers are screwing up the show! We really nedd more scenes of JT! and LESS Gabe!!!!!!
