The Originals - Episode 1.03 - Tangled Up In Blue - Review

So much happened this week, most importantly: the war has started. In “Tangled Up In Blue” Klaus makes his first move against Marcel, taking out his right-hand man Thierry. Klaus and Rebekah are anxious to get their brother back. I must say, as much as I want Elijah back (I’m aware that Daniel has other commitments on Saving Hope), I’m glad he’s not being ignored like the daggered Originals have been in the past. Connections between the characters are drawn. Cami seems to get closer to both Marcel and Klaus, even though he keeps compelling her (leading me to believe she won’t stay human for long). There seem to still be some lingering feelings between Rebekah and Marcel. Rebekah and Sophie work together to track Elijah, which fails, and Sophie seems to know a lot more about Davina than we do...

Best WTF moment: The scene where Hayley sees the wolf just left me with so many questions. Is this going to be a common occurrence? Was that an actual wolf or a werewolf? Was it a full moon? If it is a werewolf, any chance that’s one of her long lost family members? Does the wolf have any other significance?
Best karma moment: Setting aside what happened to her later in the episode, I loved watching Katie get her ass kicked by Rebekah. The parallel with Klaus torturing a vampire at the same time was great. It also reminded me how much I love how ruthless the Original siblings can be.

Creepiest moment: The flashback to the ritual the witch did to Hayley as definitely creepy to say the least. First of all, why was she on the kitchen counter? Couldn’t she just lie down on the couch? I’m surprised Hayley wasn’t more freaked out. Since she seems to have trouble translating what Sabine said (tip: try Latin), I wonder who she’ll confide in. My money is on Rebekah.

Biggest bitch moment: Davina, two weeks in a row, as she refuses to hand over Elijah. I’m sure my dislike for her mostly stems from the fact that we know so little about her or why she's so attached to Marcel (Stockholm syndrome perhaps?). So please writers, enlighten us.

Biggest “aaw” moment: Hayley tells Klaus she thinks it’s a girl. That little smile he flashes was all kinds of adorable.
Most tragic moment: Thierry and Katie’s tragic Romeo & Juliet-style romance just broke my heart. Neither deserved the fate they got: Katie dead and Thierry desiccating in a cave for the next 100 years. They were both just pons in the war.

Best Musical moment: I love the song “Mercy” by Hurts. It was a perfect entry for Klaus and Rebekah. It also set a great mood for the party.
Favorite moment: It may not be a very significant scene, but I loved when Klaus, Rebekah and Hayley were discussing the plan to rescue Elijah. The banter between Klaus and Rebekah was a great reflection of their relationship as siblings. I’m glad that Hayley is starting to become a member of the family. Now all we need is Elijah.

Favorite quotes: Rebekah: “A girl about yay high, cute as a button, anger issues.”
Klaus: “ Don’t be fooled Love, I’m the devil in disguise.”

This show keeps getting better and better. Check in again next week for my review of “Girl In New Orleans”.

  2. Isn't it a wonderful thing when The Original siblings play nice together? The war has begun and I am so invested in seeing where we go from here. Every week Klaus continues to cast his spell over me. The charisma that Joseph Morgan gives Klaus is epic. Even when he's doing horrible and evil things I still imagine him cuddled up somewhere by a fire with the one girl that gives him peace. This episode makes me think that peace might just be found in the eyes of his daughter. That smirk when Hayley told him the baby was a girl was golden. This is why Klaus is one of my favorite characters on tv. There is not one female actress that I want him to be with on this show. Not that the actresses aren't great I just don't see him with any of them, but it seems like they're setting us up for a triangle with Marcel and Cammi. Not cool with that but if I'm still watching TVD after all their love triangle madness I can definitely suck it up for The Originals.
I too questioned why a gender ritual required Hayley to be on top of the kitchen counter but first I asked Hayley (yes, I talked to the tv) why would you trust a random witch to do magic on you....isn't that how you got stuck in the NO in the first place?
Last, Marcels "garden" was really, really creepy. At least seal them in completely. No need for random desiccating vamp parts to be on display.
I cannot express enough how glad I am that Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah and Hayley got out of Mystic Falls. Now, if they could just undagger Elijah......

  3. I really enjoy the ep but just wished the last scene with Rebekah & Marcel was taken it out. We already know she has feelings for him no need to overly emphasize it. I wish they kept the scene with Klaus & Cami from the back door pilot bcus their attraction makes no sense. Half the time they talked since the season started he is compelling her. I hope the wolf turns out to b Tyler so sick of his disappearance. It would explain why he has been gone for so long even though Klaus is not after him, he's been plotting revenge against Klaus & Hayley. One last thing, just don't get how the witch figuring out the baby sex who was chanting is a trick but not magic. I need a better explanation than that. Sounds silly.
