The Mentalist - Episode 6.05 "The Red Tattoo" - Review

NOTE: Please be advised that English is not my first language.

I must admit. Every Sunday I watch The Mentalist, I'm tempted to change my theory about Red John again. Anyway, my money are always on Raymond Haffner.
The episode focus on him, so I'm gonna concentrate on Haffner.
First, I've noticed how almost every Red John suspects seem to have their own phobia; in episode 6.03, McAllister looked like he was afraid of heigh, but he climbed the roof to save Jane, who was falling down. Here, Haffner seems scared when he sees a spider walking on the wall. Lisbon and Van Pelt, who are right in front of him, look a bit surprised. I'm still wondering if there's an insider clue into the spider and what does it mean for Red John.

While he's shown giving Lisbon compliments - "Teresa, lovely as always." and "I do really like the idea of working with you again, Teresa" - I can't say Haffner has the same attitude toward Jane. I think he kinda hate Jane because he screwed up his career in the CBI, that's why he quit. He's certainly arrogant with Jane and it's not a case that he warned Jane about some "comeuppance" to come. He works with Visualize, he knows things, and since he seems to be - creepily I'd add - fond of Lisbon, he makes her clear that Jane not only bothers him, but also a lot of powerful people, including Red John. He may be the serial killer or not, think whatever you like, but he also has some hidden agenda just like Kirkland had. In the end, Haffner knows Jane is getting close to Red John, so he doesn't want him on his path.
Speaking of Kirkland, is everyone wondering why no one care too much about his death? With Jane and the rest of the team solving the case, Rigsby receives a very important file about the former Homeland Security agent. Will this be revisited in future episodes? I think so. As Bruno Heller said earlier this season, if you miss an episode, you miss a clue.

I'm gonna spend some words about Rigsby and Cho. Of course, the happily married Rigsby can't see his best friend alone. His last love interest didn't end up well. While investigating on a murder, Cho meets Kira Tinsley, a blonde girl just like Summer was, at the gym. She seems like an ordinary girl, until Jane realizes she was sent by Red John in order to get closer to Cho and spying on the CBI. That poor girl doesn't know what she's just done, when Red John knocks on her door and brutally attacks her.

There's no time for Jane and Lisbon to save her because she's lying on the floor, seriously injured. But she has the time to whisper in Jane's her who did that, "tattoo on his left shoulder. Three dots." Here we are, that's another clue! The smirk in Lisbon's face says a lot of possible things. She's glad they're finally getting closer to Red John, but I assume she can smile for a moment, because we all know, when the whole story will be over, she's gonna end up hurt.

Before ending this review there are still unresolved question to answer. A member from Visualize was killed. But, where is Bret Stiles? Nobody seems to have seen him. How did Kira see the tattoo? After what you've seen in this episode, do you think Haffner can cut off from the list? I guess we have to wait next week.

  1. My guess is: he wore a sleeveless shirt.

  2. Red John's shirt could easily have been torn or stretched out of shape whilst Kira was fighting for her life. That might be how she saw the tattoo.

  3. I hope we will be able to listen to the actual truth of the fact.

  4. She could have seen the tatoo during a previous meeting with "the guy that killed her" (because we don't know for sure Red Jon killed her in person ! He could have hired a killer for all we know !). She probably has met her killer before, she says "Ho, hi" like she knows him when she opens the door. And I'm sooooo exited for next episode !!!

  5. Great review! I had a feeling Rigsby would put himself in danger by digging into Kirkland's murder- the "I am so happy remarks" and all... :(
BTW, does Red John really have a tattoo, or could that be intentionally planted on the killer's part so that the blonde will say that in her dying message? Or, the killer could be one of RJ's minions- Arhhh so many clues and possibilities!
See, the thing about the Mentalist is it kind of seems like a dumb show but it can also be very subtle and like a maze with multiple choices.
And the "now we have leverage" joke! ha! pun or no pun intended, that was a good one.

  6. I don't know about the tattoo, but I know for sure we'll get an answer next episode :) am I the only one who hopes Jane should tell the suspects to take their shirts off to see if they have those three dots? ;)
About Rigsby? Good theory! He may be in trouble about Kirkland's file.

  7. Nope you're not alone lol! Next week promo is sick! Jane should just be blunt and lift every suspects shirt- I'm sure he will pull that off nicely!

  8. Nicely is gross since he's holding a gun! aaaah can't wait for that episode!

  9. someone create a spreadsheet with all the clues, see who is eliminated or most likely Red John. Height, lefty or righty, phobias, whistler, etc

  10. I am like the above author - every week, I change my idea about who is Red John. I'm actually slowly coming to the conclusion though that Red John is Lisbon! Or she is part of the group, at least. Just as Patrick duped Homeland Security with a list of false suspects, he might be duping Lisbon (and the rest of the 'team') with another fake list. Anyway, I'm not sure but it explains a lot, although the possibility is incredible. Lisbon is portrayed so authentically by the actress as a person who would be totally incapable of such a thing (over a period of years, too). Still, the idea is in keeping with the series' ability to shock in totally surprising but well-planned out and ultimately logical ways. For instance, who knew the list that Red John found out about except for Lisbon? When Partridge died, why did he issue the 'Tiger, Tiger' greeting to Lisbon? Who could gain access to the computer records and clearly admires (or, at least, respects) Patrick's brilliance? It could also explain why Patrick has gone so far (all part of a con?) to make Lisbon his best friend (which would be in keeping with the theory that you should keep your friends close but your enemies closer) if the more obvious explanation that he only needs her to better hunt Red John doesn't turn out to be correct.

  11. I'm sorry but I have to disagree with that. Heller said many times that from this season there will be no jokes, because the hunt is getting serious. So Red John is ONE of the names from Jane's list. Kirkland and Partridge died, so RJ is among the remains 5.

  12. I respect your opinion. I'm not 100% sure it's Lisbon. I would say that for re-run purposes wouldn't it be great to have Jane and Red John in every episode together? That would be extremely interesting. It would probably make Heller and the network a lot of money. In addition, what could be more surprising for the audience? Oh, and Lisbon is the only one to ever survive Red John unharmed, isn't she? So, I think it's possible and would be better than just about every remaining person on that list.

  13. Once I said in one of previous review that maybe the only reason why Red John didn't kill Lisbon is because he's a crush on her, just like Haffner seems to be...

  14. RJ has shown many times before that he is able to silently enter a locked house. Why ring the bell here?

Not to show that Kira knew him; they could still have her say, "What are YOU doing here?!"
