Hostages - Episode 1.05 - Truth and Consequences - Review

So there wasn't a big death on this week's Hostages.

The trailer was a bit misleading, but there was a death this week (note: the weekly death rate of this show is remarkably lower than that of CBS' other serialized drama Under the Dome). And the winner was... Angela!

I really didn't see that twist coming. Archer was supposed to fake Angela's death while locking her up in some place, but instead killed her (yes, for real this time) when she tried to run away. Duncan is furious, but as Archer says: "You don't get to kill the president and keep your hands clean." Duncan is a very interesting character, as he apparantly doesn't want to have more casualities than one (the president). He doesn't want anyone else to get hurt. We'll see how that goes when Ellen's sister unexpectedly shows up next week.

But there were many more twists in the episode. Ellen killed someone: she led a rapist bleed out in the ER. Furthermore, Duncan lets Archer get arrested as he is trying to tie up some loose ends. I really like these twists as they are quite unpredictable.

Elsewhere, Duncan forced Morgan to break up with Boyd, Sandrine got beaten up by a guy she ownes money too, Jake called home to make sure his parents were still alive (and to get himself traced, is he really that stupid?), Ellen discovers Morgan's pregnancy and Sandrine and Kramer open up to each other.

Check below for the trailer of next week's episode (low quality unfortunately) and some footage from future episodes, including Brian stabbing Duncan, a kiss between Sandrine and Kramer, co-conspirator Quinten collapses, Secret Service agent Hofmann is shot, Archer has problems in prison and Ellen and Duncan kiss (!!).

  1. For someone who doesn't want any casualties Duncan was pretty dumb to shoot Brian. If he just wanted to make Ellen come back, it would have been a lot easier and uncomplicated to make Brian wear a Kevlar vest and a blood bag under his shirt. It would have done the job as well without any almost killing Brian. It was obvious that the kids won't get away but I still hoped it as because of how good the bad guys are and not because of Jake's stupidity.
Despite these two things that bugged me about the episode, I'm still very much enjoying it and think the show is underrated. Making Ellen believe she's gonna die only to make her bury Angela was twisted and cruel.
The fact that CBS decided the show us a promo of what's gonna happen during the rest of the season means the show is safe for now, right? I'd be extremely infuriated if they tease us like that, only to cancel it anyway.

  2. I really hope they don't cancel it. Especially now after seeing how good the rest of the season is going to be.
