Castle - Season 6 - Stana Katic Interview

8 Oct 2013

Looking back at this season-opening arc, it's clear the job in D.C. didn't turn out to be what Beckett had imagined.
Stana Katic:
I think there were certain compromises that she didn't expect when she took the job. She's been a character that's very focused on justice. And there were probably a few people that should've come to justice that, because of the way we've set up the D.C. world, they won't. That doesn't sit easy with her.

Is that what leads her to leak the information she does to the press?
Katic:
The way that [the writers] have set this character up, she has core values that are focused on bringing the bad guy to justice. I don't think she can work against that. So, because she is who she is, she has to make sure that the victim is safe and that the bad people get put away.

But of course, it costs her the job in D.C. How does that land on Beckett?
Katic:
It's a shock. I think it's crushing. I mean, it was a dream job and it put her story line on a more international sphere, which is really exciting. And I think that she thought that by doing the right thing, she was doing the right thing for that job and for that world as well. But she was obviously chastised for it [and] got in trouble for it.

Beckett's work is so key to who she is. How will this affect her emotionally in the coming episodes?
Katic:
What she is at her core really is a little bit of a super heroine. She's someone who wants to help people that aren't being protected and will extend herself sometimes to her own detriment for people. So, yeah, she is going to be a fish out of water because she won't have that purpose after she loses this job. She's not able to go back to the NYPD. And so, she's kind of floating around for a little bit. And hopefully, she'll land.

  1. I thought Beckett was able to go to the police department if she choose to.Didn't realize it wasn't an option.

  2. That last sentence is interesting... I thought, based on the promo and press releases for 6.04 that Beckett would be back at the NYPD at the beginning of the episode.

But now I'm guessing she'll be back at the end of 6.04 or beginning of 6.05 since the promo pics for 6.05 clearly puts her back in the interrogation room with a case file in front of her...

Whatever the case, it's obvious that Beckett won't be "floating around" too long...

  3. I love interviews with Stana, she always says whats on her mind or what is fact. She doesn't try to big things up for the fans or press.

I've been very happy with the DC arc, it's given interesting stories and has given each character a new dimension to work in. The end of the DC arc and the speed at which it ends also brings new light to the characters and how they will feel going forward. I for one can not wait for more!

  4. Great interview, as always. I just love how Stana is so invested in her character. It makes her thoughts on Beckett very interesting and really worth reading.

As for the DC arc, although I was a bit reluctant at first, I have to say it was done well. In the end, it brought out some good character growth and I'm really happy with how it turned out!

  5. She got fired for breaking the rules. That's on her file now.NYPD cannot just hire her back because she has no job
I'm guessing Gates might will pull some favours to give Katherine her job back???

I kind of like it though, even for one episode.I'm guessing it's gonna drive her crazy sitting all day long, without a job!

  6. I think it would be cool for her and Castle to start a Private Investigator firm, and then have them BOTH as consultants for the NYPD. Just a crazy idea I had.

  10. I'm just glad that Castle and Beckett's relationship isnt filled with so much angst and tension any more. It's time for them to start enjoying life and enjoying each other. They need one another and I am enjoying how their relationship is progressing this season. I'm sure Kate will get back in to the NYPD at some point. Looking forward to seeing Lanie. (-
