Witches of East End - Pilot Screener Preview

11 Sept 2013

Here's my 2 cents after watching the screener for the Lifetime's Witches of East End pilot:

What is the pilot about?

The series follows a witch,Joanna and her daughters Freya and Ingrid, the mother is cursed with immortality and the constant resurrection of her daughters (from pregnancy), who always die young as a result of practicing magic, this time she is trying to keep them alive by keeping their nature secret from them, her estranged sister Wendy comes into town to warn her of a dark force trying to kill their family...permanently. Meanwhile Freya finds herself falling for her fiance's brother and Ingrid starts playing with magic trying to get a friend pregnant.

Serialized or Episodic?

The Witches of East End appears to be heavily serialized.

First thoughts/ Comparison to other series:

I've watched Eastwick, The Secret Circle and a bit of Charmed and went into this expecting to find a darker version of ABC's Eastwick based on the short promos I had seen. However, it played out very differently than I expected, it ended up being a very soapy series that doesn't take itself seriously at all in fact it felt more like a spoof of the witching genre. Witches of East End reminded me a bit of The CW's quickly cancelled Valentine.

Bottom line: If you're a fan of light supernatural soaps this could be your new very guilty pleasure.

  1. A spoof? Dang now I've lost some interest.

  3. Too soapy? What a shame! I was actually looking forward to this one.
I will still check it out, but I'm considerably less exicted about it.

I hope it's at least some good ol'fun....

  5. Soapy and spoof are not words I was hoping would describe this series. I was hoping for something dramatic and suspenseful, with a well crafted mythology and engaging layered characters.

  6. Yeah, I'm with you. Still tuning in but considerably more weary now.

  7. I share your sentiments. If this show had aired on another network...say Showtime or HBO, I'm sure it would be considerably darker.
