Under the Dome - Episode 1.12 - Exigent Circumstances - Review

11 Sept 2013

Heading into this episode, I was expecting the worst after last week's debacle of an episode. But this week's episode titled ''Exigent Circumstances'' showed just how good Under the Dome can be when it wants to be!
Further escalating the conflicts that were set in motion last week and setting the stage for next week's season finale episode.

Most of the episode was about Big Jim, with the manhunt for Barbie, Dodee and the black egg and Jim trying to locate the black egg. I liked the short town meeting at the beginning of the episode that explained some of the rules that are now in effect in Chester's Mill and what kind of jobs people are doing. Big Jim might not be the best leader, but it is clear he is getting things done.

One of the biggest things coming out of this episode was Dodee's death at the hands of Big Jim. Not someone who I am sorry to see go after she developed instant distrust of Joe and Norrie when they told her and Julia about their ability to interact with the dome. She seemed spiteful and it wasn't really based on anything. Dodee wanted to trust Big Jim, so she told him the few details there were about the mini-dome/sphere and the black egg inside it. Of course this would spell trouble for ''the dome four'', but more on that in a bit.

Dodee invited Big Jim over to listen to radio transmission of the military who were looking for both Barbie and the egg. Her trust in him soon came to bite her in the ass when she overheard the military saying they saw Big Jim kill Reverend Coggins. Despite Big Jim's attempt to talk his way out of it Dodee was having none of it. Realizing she couldn't outrun Big Jim, nor sway him otherwise, she had to some terrific parting words for him. ''They're going to smile when you die.''

Yes, I am Dodee. Yes, I am.

Also gleaned from the radio transmission  the military is looking for Barbie because he has a certain expertise that somehow connects to egg. I wonder what's up with that.

Another thing, wasn't it weird how the radio station just burned down perfectly and nobody panicked or rallied the whole town? Other than a short mention of the fire and the volunteers, the fire didn't appear to be a very big deal. By the time Sheriff Linda and Phil got there, the fire was already out!

Despite Carolyn's best efforts to stop Big Jim from searching the barn, he forced his way in there only to find out the egg was gone. So he arrested Joe and Norrie for obstruction of justice, in what seemed like a desperate move. Trying to rattle them in the police station also had little effect and I liked Norrie's resilience to Big Jim's power trip. I feel Norrie's statement over how doing nothing lets evil triumph was spot on. To take down Big Jim ''the good guys'' needed to be a little more organized.

The manhunt for Barbie ended about halfway through the episode when he surrendered himself to Linda after rescuing Julia. It was preceded by another of those cringe worthy Angie/Junior scenes. Stop it writers, willing this relationship into happening won't make it work. Preferably Barbie would have just shot him in the knee, well the head actually, but we need him to open the mini-dome/sphere. So Barbie gave himself up to give Angie some time to get away with Julia. The look on the faces of Norrie and Joe were pretty great as their 'monarch' was escorted to his cell in front of their eyes. Things seemed hopeless.

I still feel Julia is the monarch, especially when the butterfly started to emerge from the chrysalis and egg started shrieking as she began to wake up. Great to see she doesn't have that cliched amnesia too and remembers being shot by a woman she hasn't seen before. And thanks Ben for backing me up and calling it a sphere, because that's what it is! High five!

Though I do have to knock down a couple of characters, Junior is still over the map with loving/hating/loving and then again hating his father. Pick one and stick with it, but I liked him questioning his father. As much as I hate to say it, Junior might be the deciding factor in the war against Big Jim.

Then there is our Sheriff Linda, who is by far still the dumbest character on the show and just does whatever Big Jim tells her at this point. And Phil is just as stupid and tags along with Linda just to rile her up. Neither of them questioned why Barbie would kill Dodee, he just killed her because they were broadcasting information about him. Because the guy that went out of his way to help people and find diplomatic solutions to pretty much every conflict that has arisen would just kill an innocent. Makes sense. Which begs the question, why didn't Barbie try to reason with Linda on the way to the police station about the accusations made against him?

Of course it all led to Barbie negotiating with Big Jim to release Joe and Norrie from custody in exchange to Barbie pleading guilty in public to the charges. Not that Joe, Norrie and Carolynn are very smart as they lead Linda straight to Ben's house where they hid the egg. Perhaps the egg can knock some sense into her? Wishful thinking on my part probably. At the same time Big Jim took the stage with a handcuffed Barbie next to him for his public trial. I loved Barbie's defiant ''Not guilty.'' Big Jim was played by Barbie, though that probably won't stop him from trying to kill Barbie anyway.

Big Jim is becoming a Caesar-like dictator of sorts, like I speculated in my previous review, and that makes the knife metaphor shown by the dome last week so fitting. Will Big Jim die at the end of the season? Probably not, but it would be a good move to do so. A lot of shows keep their villain alive too long and it diminishes the villains character in the end. But all in all, this was easily the best episode since the pilot. I came out pleasantly surprised and actually looking forward to next week's season finale!

8/10

  1. Thanks Pascal for the review, enjoy reading your thoughts. I agree this was a strong episode that did it's job in setting up the Finale.

    Can't wait!

  2. Agreed!

Care to share your thoughts on the season as a whole so far?

I feel it's been pretty uneven so far, with more bad elements than good ones. Though the mysteries surrounding the dome keep bringing me back. And episodes like these, haha. I really don't get why some episodes are quite mediocre and others are quite good. :)

  3. Great review!

I feel like Big Jim being this evil is going to get old sooner than later, and would preferably actually have them kill him off in the season finale, but I don't think that's gonna happen. I will miss Dodee!

I am getting a huge question mark in my mind as to why Barbie doesn't try and explain everything to Linda. He could easily have told her that Julia's husband needed Barbie to murder him for insurance money, and he could also explain what Big Jim has done. Why be silent? It only makes things look worse for him. The whole "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law" that police normally say, doesn't apply in this extraordinary situation, in my opinion.

P.S. It's "dumbest", not "most dumb". And I am forced by my OCD to also mention that titles ("Reverend", "Sheriff") are spelt with a capital at the start ;) Keep up the great work with writing, you make many excellent points!

  4. Thank you for the language corrections, I edited them. Sometimes while proofreading these I miss some of them. The title-thing I definitely didn't know! From time to time it's noticeable English isn't my first language. ;)

I agree with you on Barbie and with the finale next week I'm guessing Barbie explaining himself to Linda will never be explored.

The only other solution to the Big Jim problem would be to turn him into a good guy and in my opinion he is even less redeemable than Junior with all the people he killed.

  5. If I can drop in here, I just wanted to share my opinion. I agree with you Pascal. The season's had a lot of bad moments, and a few very good ones. For me, it's the fact that even with some of the scenes being flat-out weird, the show in general still tickles my brain with the mystery and scenes like the Dome being shot at with a missile was pulse-pounding for me. Not since 24 have I gotten the shrivers down my spine that Under the Dome has done for me. I feel like I connect with the characters on a far deeper level than any other show I have watched and that's not common for me. I wish they could take back the bad scenes and turn them into good ones, but no matter how next week's episode is, this is still my all-time favorite television series. (And I'll admit I have a huge crush on one of the actors in the project, but I'm gonna keep who that person is a secret :P)

  6. What to do if someone is pointing a gun at you:

    http://www.wikihow.com/Disarm-Your-Opponent
Just in case anyone is ever in Dodee's position. What I noticed is that Dodee and Jim were just about the same height. If she had raised her left arm to move his out of the way, pushed in toward him, and then wrapped her leg behind his knee to trip him, she might have been able to grab his gun and/or get away. But then, who expects town selectman to point a gun at you....
I liked the episode a lot. Everyone has faults, obviously, and Linda's is her naiveté. Agree, Barbie might have tried explaining himself to Linda. Perhaps he's decided she's too dumb to understand. And she's so convinced of everything Big Jim says to her that she doesn't even wonder how he got to the radio station and back so fast. Did she learn nothing from her conversation with Big Jim just the day before, about his involvement with propane and drugs? Duh...
My favorite scene was the very end, with Junior touching the Dome and looking up, as though being converted. It's about time Junior got converted!
While I also would hope Linda's meeting with the egg would knock some sense into her, next week's promo shows her collaborating with Big Jim and saying "This could be our way out." So we may have to wait a year to see her sharpen up or hope that she's the one who dies next week.

  7. That may have been out of context. Remember that in a previous promo, it appeared Junior shot Julia. I could see that situation being like "You need to release Barbie. This could be our way out." I have no idea, I'm just saying that promos are one of the least trustworthy sources out there.

  8. I dont get why everyones so hard on Angies character.. shes one of the best on the show. Her, Joe, Norrie, and Barble are my favorites. The girl who pays Julia is so wooden.. but i like her too. I cant stand Jr. I was so dissapointed when he was the 4th hand, they couldnt pick anyone else.? But yet every review i see is bad mouthing Angie (Brit Robertson) and i think shes great.

  9. It was definitely an improvement on last week, this show does have so much potential and we got to see some of it here.
I don't see how they can sustain Big Jim as the Big Bad for much longer. The outside world knows what he is, it's only a matter of time before the dome people realise too.
And another thing. If the army wants Barbie to do something for them then where are they? If they show up outside the dome the people inside it will definitely pay attention. All the army has to do is hold up a sign saying that the town has to stop trusting Jim, because they witnessed him committing murder, and to release Barbie because they want him to do something for them. At the very least Jim would have his work cut out trying to convince the town that the army is lying.

  10. Totally agree with you Pascal. This episode was way better than the last one. I enjoyed the ending of last week's, but the overall episode was just so ridiculously awful. I've been reading the Stephen King book this is based on and it is WAY BETTER. That being said I know that they have to change things for TV, but some of the story lines are just so ridiculously awful. Hopefully the season finale will be as good as this episode was.

  11. Of course you can! Really curious how everyone feels about the first season so far. :)

I'm glad you like it so much and you have that connection. I can't say that I do myself, with one or two characters being the exception. So the only thing keeping me hooked are the mysteries. But you probably already knew that. ;)

So if I may ask, why do you have this profound connection with the characters? What makes you connect to them so deeply? I'm curious to know. :)

  12. I still haven't read the book myself, but I'm hearing that a lot. I felt I could do the show more justice by not having the possibility included that I'd get annoyed about changes they made from the books. But alas, the mediocrity still heavily shines through, a lot of things feel stretched out or added on to fill time. I hope it's just some growing pains as the show finds it feet. Excited for the finale though! :)

  13. Oh, that's an excellent point I hadn't even thought of. Though I had been wondering where the military has been ever since they fired the missile at the dome.

I have no defense to your logic, lol, you're just right! Would have made for a better story too, I think! :)

  14. Was I hard on Angie's character? I don't think so, I just loathe Junior and every scene he is in. I get what Angie was doing, finding the diplomatic/painless solution to the problem. But with Junior being as obsessive as he is, it certainly wasn't the smart thing to do. I fear Junior will pursue Angie more aggressively again.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That's actually a very useful tip, thank you! Hope I'll never need it though! :)

Junior converted though? I don't really want him to become a good guy, he's just a stalking abusing creep in my eyes. It would be very hard to redeem him.

Was Linda with Big JIm in the promo? Hmmm, disappointed I am.

  16. I also cant stand Jr. in my opinion they needed a better actor to play the part. I think the character is needed, being hee is big jims son and all and hes the 4th hand. But a better actor might make his scenes better. But to late now. I agree with Angie playing his emotions like that, its going to get her hurt if she continues. It was a good plan though, rather then shooting up the hospital. And your right Jr. will probably continue to persue Angie and it probably wont be any less aggressive then it has been so far. Hes just nuts, i wonder what she was thinking dating him to begin with. Cant they indroduce another guy for Angie.
