Ironside 1.01 Pilot Preview: Ironside Rolls Back Onto Your Television

11 Sept 2013

I loved Ironside when I was a kid. I also loved Hawaii Five-O. But while I found the re-boot of Hawaii Five-O pretty pointless (and not as good as the original), the re-boot of Ironside looks to be better than the original. The biggest difference between the two re-boots for me is acting and storytelling – both of those elements are excellent in Ironside.
The series is “developed” by Michael Caleo (he didn’t “create” it, after all), and he wrote the “Pilot.” Caleo’s biggest credit to date is as one of the writers to come out of the Sopranos, which makes me hope for some pretty gritty drama to come. We get a bit of back-story on each member of Ironside’s “team,” but there is no doubt more to come – forty-two minutes doesn’t allow for everyone’s character to get fleshed out.
Blair Underwood as Robert Ironside
As with all pilots, the story has a lot of exposition to cover and still needs to grab our attention with a complex mystery that needs to be solved. The flashbacks that tease just how Ironside ended up in the chair are particularly well done. Caleo’s version of Ironside shares the basics with the original – he’s the head of a special police unit and was too good at his job for the department to let him go. But Caleo’s Ironside is more like House or Sherlock in Elementary – a damaged individual who can be caustic but is brilliant at his job and who uses that job to eek joy out of his life. Not surprisingly, Blair Underwood brings the character sharply to life. Like the original Ironside, this Ironside also has three sidekicks – a girl, a street-wise ne’er do well, and the “good guy.” Both Ironsides have an “Ed,” but in the original Ed Brown was the “good guy” on Ironside’s team. In the re-boot, Ed Rollins (Kenneth Choi) is Ironside’s Captain. Choi and Underwood have undeniable chemistry.

The “Pilot” was directed by Peter Horton, a busy guy on either side of the camera. In fact, Horton had an uncredited role on LAX, one of Underwood’s former series. It will be interesting to see if the camera work will be adopted as the general style for the show – I suspect it will. Like a lot of cop dramas, there was a lot of handheld footage – though for those of you bothered by “shakey-camera” – it’s not that pronounced. I particularly appreciated the dolly camera work that created a moving image that mimicked Ironside’s motion in his wheelchair.
I’m not going to go into a lot of detail on the plot as this article is a “preview” and not a “review.” I will say that the opening scene sets the tone and is particularly satisfying. At the end of the opening scene, Ironside is asked, “Are you really a cripple?” And he answers, “You tell me.” The show doesn’t shy away from Ironside’s physical challenge, but it doesn’t really emphasize it either, giving the show the potential to really explore and raise awareness of issues pertaining to differently advantaged individuals.
This pilot is definitely worth checking out. Once again, as a quick re-cap – very good acting, writing, and directing. If you like cop shows, I’m betting you’ll like this one. Be sure to catch the premiere on October 2 at 10pm EST on NBC.

  4. Good preview, I'm looking forward to seeing how they do with this one, I loved the original too and still have some on VHS. There'll be no beating it for me, but if they can create something just as enjoyable then I'm happy.

(As an aside, intended entirely as constructive criticism and my own subjective opinion, but I think you're using quote marks in an awful lot of cases where they are not relevant, and I find it quite jarring to read - again, meant with respect and as constructive feedback, I couldn't have written a better review for sure!)

  6. As we reported earlier, the pilot is available to watch online (for US residents only, unfortunately):

  9. Well I should mention that in general I don't like cop shows with a few exceptions like rookie blue, monk, elementary.

This felt like a typical cop show but had a witty/angry main character. While the explosive main character worked in House and Elementary, because in my opinion both actors where charsimatic, in this show I hated the main guy.

The rest of the cast was boring and plain. To me it was just another copy of a million shows and movie about a damaged cop trying to prove something.

  10. It's got a lot of potential above and beyond the Pilot - which was good in and of itself - the story itself was quite good, so if you like cop shows, this should be right up your alley!

  13. Just saw it. It started out completely ridiculous, as it is still difficult for me not to roll my eyes thinking about the opening scene, but the show did get progressively (albeit only marginally) better as the episode progressed. Ironside is definitely better than NBC's last few attempts at procedural crime drama but only by a modest margin.

This show didn't cut it for me but I can see plenty of procedural junkies liking this show.

Side note: I was continually distracted during the pilot every time Pablo Schreiber was onscreen because it's now impossible for me to think of him as anyone else but "Pornstache" from Orange is the New Black.

  14. I did not have near as positive a reaction to the pilot as you did. It felt mostly like another crime procedural, trying to make itself stand out by having a wheelchair-bound protagonist. While I agree that Underwood is the main draw here and he is talented, I found the crime to be run of the mill and few characters to stand out. My biggest problem though was that I got bored in the middle. It was a good/decent pilot, but near enough to make it something I would seek out with so much other TV to watch.

  15. I felt more in line with you, although I typically enjoy cop shows. There is nothing special about this show and while Underwood did a great job acting, I also felt unsympathetic towards him. There has to be something in a crime show that stands out and makes me want to watch it whether it is the cases themselves, cast chemistry, a great secondary character, or a twist I find compelling. This had none of that.

  16. I watched the Raymond Burr version and have been concerned that the new series would bare so little resemblance that I'd hate it.

My biggest problem is that I didn't like a huge percentage of the regulars. Liked Ironside's boss. But the four cops with him had nothing about them that made each character interesting or likable. And for me character is a majorly important element of any story I read, watch, or listen to.

That said. I had no issues that out weighed the primary reason I will be watching episode 2.

Blair Underwood. That man's voice is like butta. And he is still pretty hot. I will happily spend 45 minutes with him. Hopefully, I'll luck out like I did with Fringe and Grimm and I'll be rewarded with a show that turns out to be really good.

  17. I didn't feel one way or the other about the supporting characters because we really didn't get enough of them to form any kind of feeling. I'm sure they wanted to spend the little time they had in the pilot on the main character - I'm reserving judgment on the rest of them until we actually see them get some screen time!

  18. Naturally, the disgusting progressives want to destroy all traditional icons like the TV show Ironside but vast a black in the lead, They did the same with Wild Wild West. Disgusting, and I'll pass as will million of others.
