Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Cross finally confirmed that it will be a prequel. The script is done and he hopes to get the film made next year.
Cross says: "It will follow his [Luther's] career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe, and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series." That scene being the death of a serial paedophile Henry Madsen (Anton Saunders) whom Luther failed to save from a fall off a catwalk in a chemical factory.
Cross says that part of the reason for doing a prequel was to bring back various supporting characters - something they couldn't do considering how events wrapped at the end of the third series.
Amongst the cast members slated to return alongside Idris Elba are DS Justin Ripley (Warren Brown), Luther’s wife Zoe (Indira Varma), and DCI Ian Reed (Steve Mackintosh).
Uncertain to return/cameo are DSU Rose Teller (Saskia Reeves), DSU Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley), Benny Silver (Michael Smiley), Mark North (Paul McGann), or DCI Erin Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird).
Unfortunately, by going the prequel route, the one character who won't make an appearance is the popular and murderous Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson). Cross says Alice may return, however, as the lead in her own spin-off series.
Cross says: "The BBC is very interested in the project. The truth is I absolutely adore Alice! We're kind of thinking very loosely of a mix between The Talented Mr Ripley and The Last Seduction."

Much as I love Alice, I'm not sure if a spin-off is the best idea- she might work best in smaller doses, as a supporting character. I'm worried they'd water down her character, in order to make her an appealing-to-the-masses lead. We'll see. I do think a prequel could be interesting and would love to see the return of some of the characters that are gone by now.
ReplyDeleteI do adore Alice, although it would be tricky to have her carry a series. I would like to see them try, however.
ReplyDeleteI am not happy about this at all.:-( I was hoping for a Luther&Alice team-up in the movie. The only returning character I am looking forward to seeing is Justin and I have no idea how he will fit into the prequel when IIRC he hasn't met Luther until quite some time after the first scene of the show which shall be the last scene of the movie ...
