For the eighth season in a row, Showtime’s serial killer thriller broke viewership records for its season premiere — despite airing in the summer for the first time. Dexter‘s final season debuted to 2.5 million viewers, edging out last year’s premiere by just 4 percent. Including its repeat, Dexter had 3.2 million for the night.

Aided by this big lead in, new drama Ray Donovan had Showtime’s most-watched original series premiere ever with 1.4 million viewers at 10 p.m. and 2.2 million for the night.

  1. Great news for Ray Donovan considering that the pilot had been released weeks early. I think that bodes well for the series.

  2. I wonder since Dexter was on if True Blood viewership numbers dropped? I know a lot of people who watches both shows including myself who watched Dexter live and DVR'd True Blood.

  3. Actually HBO and Showtime tend to both re-air their 9:00 slots at 11 on Sundays! So I watched Dexter (9), Ray Donovan (10), and True Blood (11)....Now what I don't know is if they ever put the 9 & 11 ratings together as a night total?

  5. That's what the 3.2 million viewers for Dexter comes from and 2.2 million for Ray Donovan. I've been looking on all the various sites for info on True Blood's ratings but haven't found anything at all about it. Nothing from TVLine or Tvbythenumbers which I think is a little odd.

  6. Yup :-)
I watched Dexter at 9 and then True Blood at 11! I didn't catch Ray Donovan though. Was it good?

  7. I just watched TB at 11 instead of at 9.

  8. I skipped RD, but did the same thing! Haha! Dexter at 9, TB at 11.

  9. I watched the premiere a week or so ago and then rewatched it last night! I liked it a lot! It sets everything up really well and characters are likable/interesting. It could be easily comparable to something like the Sopranos, only not so drab.

  10. So these are the totals for double airings then?!

  11. Well Showtime actually played them 3 times each so 3.2 and 2.2 might be the combination of all 3 airings.

  12. Thanks for getting back to me! It's something I wondered, but never asked. :)
