I have no idea what is going on but man was it cool. I love the Nolan and Irisa father-daughter bond and tonight we got that galore. Nothing I expected to happen actually did so that was great too.
well.... I'm a bit torn as the ep did give us a lot of what so far (imo) the best facet of the show - the Nolan/Irisa relationship as well as the scheming Stahma, but missed the mark in a lot of ways - figured that Kenya would be one of the deaths they were hinting before (unless this is another Stahma deception - she's darn good at that), but certainly wasn't expecting the Nolan one (but knew that he would be brought back, he the star and this isn't GoT... lol). The breakout of Irisa shootout left me disappointed as the believability of the 4 taking out the small army of mercs wasn't there as well as the poor staging (Macualey/Tommy/Rynn saying telling Nolan to take Irisa and escape as they would cover them, and then they stayed in the tent and didn't cover them outside?) I am glad that they gave us the answer of the mystery of the mines/artifacts/Irisa's destiny, (3000 yr old ship with powerful weapons) but the writers still haven't given us any decent backstory - why was it there, how did the Erep guys know about it, and even more basic - why did all the Votans leave their homeworld(s), and why did they come here? I gave this an ok, as I still think the potential is here for something cool and a pretty nice cast, but they really need to drastically improve the writing overall imo to get me to watch the second season...
Of course they kill off the lesbian and of course the main character comes back to life for no reason at all. Oh gods, I hope the show won't have any more of "death undoing" mcguffins lying around.
Otherwise Defiance seemed to think that its cliffhangers are way smarter and way more shocking than they truly were. Which is a wee bit sad after, what? 1? 2? outright great episodes? Its amazing on how this show manages to be awesome one second and complete boring chore the next.
All I can say is I hope next season is more even in quality.
can't get all answers in season one, knowing season 2 is renewed, its good that we still have questions after season one, and i think thats how it is suppose to be. some of the back story can be generally guessed. it may not be right but the gist of it. like in shows movies where alien life come to earth, there is almost always a OLD Spaceship Or Base left on Earth long ago. example include Transformers, Man of Steel, fringe (the Machine), Stargate, and more. also felt like the importance of Irisa was foreshadowed almost from the start. if not by episode 2 surly by episode 3, with the mentions of the goddess Irzu or something.
and also whoever expected if Nolan to really die... come on he is the Main main character. only time a MMC died that i can remember off bat was in Vanished. where the fbi dude was shot and got replaced by his friend or something. GOT don't count since there are like 4 True main characters and 10 or so other main characters.
"why did all the Votans leave their homeworld(s), and why did they come here?"
Their planet\galaxy was destroyed in a stellar collision or something similar. It's in the description of the show and it was said a few times during the show
Kinda reminds you of Galactus lol destroyer of all the universe and causing different species of life to flee to earth for safe haven if they had the chance lol
I like how this episode featured some of the more central, and probably popular, relationships on this show. My favorite is Nolan and Irisa's father-daughter relationship, so I was glad to see that featured so well in this episode. I didn't know the show was going to kill off main characters, so I was surprised they killed off Kenya. I am glad that Amanda and Kenya got to have a sisterly bonding moment before Kenya died. I don't get why anyone would go meet someone, they already consider untrustworthy, out in the woods or anywhere isolated. I'm glad that the "Irisa is the destroyer" story and the E-Rep threats are both coming to a head.
If next season is their last, I hope they use the time to tell a good, complete story. Possible story ideas: I hope that the E-Rep stays in control and a threat to Defiance for a while. I'd like to see the town citizens rallying (secretly), hopefully under Amanda's leadership (and with Nolan's help), and planning on mounting a resistance to rid themselves of the E-Rep's presence in their town. If they write and plan the story right, the planning and resistance can lead up to a final battle that could span the last two episodes, with Irisa maybe coming in as help again (mirroring the pilot episode's battle), but this time as controller of that powerful ship.
Do we know for sure that Kenya is dead or just assume it? I'd like to think Stahma put her on a roller out of town. My guess is that they are going to make Irisa powerful enough to defeat the E-reps and possibly end the battle pretty quickly although I agree it would be good to drag it out at least a couple of episodes. However, everything I thought was going to happen in this one didn't so maybe next season will be full of the same surprises.
I assumed it, partially b/c everybody else assumed it, but also b/c Stahma said "the poison was on the flask". Poison almost always is deadly, and rarely used just as a sleeping agent. Then again, maybe alien poison CAN put someone into a coma/sleep rather than kill them. The writers can say pretty much anything about alien poison. ;)
I don't mind either way, in regards to the ERep thing, as long as it's done well. I don't want it to be a repeat of this season, where the cool battle and potential of the pilot, didn't yield a very exciting season. Since we've already seen how town life is, it'd be more refreshing to see how town life will be under ERep control imo. At least for a few episodes. I still think writing Defiance, with ERep in control, and the townspeople banding together and struggling to regain their independence, will give more (and richer) story ideas.
A lot of poisons make people sick without killing them, especially if they are in small doses; however, I won't be surprised if she's dead either. I agree that a E-Rep takeover offers a lot of exciting possibilities and I would like to see that happen too. It would be better than Irisa kicking them out in the premiere with her newfound powers. I hope they go with your scenario instead of Irisa going mad with power and becoming the Big Bad of the season.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
for get this tv show, it gave me so many feels and broke my heart within an hour. i can't

Do we know from which votan language the famous "shtako" is?
ReplyDeleteI liked it! Before I started watching I wasn't sure about this show, but they found their path. Looking forward to season 2 :)
