League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Pilot ordered by Fox

9 Jul 2013

A new superhero team may be coming to primetime.

Fox has ordered a pilot based on Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s popular graphic novel The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Writer-producer Michael Green (Green Lantern, Kings, Heroes) will serve as showrunner.
The show chronicles “a group of Victorian age literary characters, including Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, who team up to fight a common enemy.”

The comic was launched in 1999 and was adapted into a 2003 origin-story film starring Sean Connery as Allan Quatermain. The film was intended to start a franchise, but underperformed at the box office. The off-season order from Twentieth Century Fox TV represents Fox following up on its pledge to do year-around development and scheduling of its shows. The order is technically a “put pilot,” which means the network is committed to airing the produced episode or else it faces a substantial penalty.

  1. While it could be cool, I can't see this being a rating hit and it's also on Fox- so I think it would be DoA.

  2. I just hope it is way better than the movie. If done right, the series could be awesome.

  3. Could it even be worse than that movie?
Seriously one of the worst movies I've ever seen....

  4. Personally I don't think the premise for the series (or movie or even comic book) works and have little hope for the series. Putting together all these iconic figures of literature does not compute to me unless it is some alternate universe battle royale or something! XD

Mindless action with little plot just is not my cup of tea.

  5. This is is the best news, the movie blew me away and I was hoping for a sequel that never came. I hope fox doesn't screw it up. I love this.

    I actually adored the movie.

  7. I have enjoyed a lot of bad movies over the years, but they will still bad movies. Sometimes for one reason or another I just connect with a character or a plot and enjoy a movie despite its many flaws. League was absolutely not that type of movie for me, but I'm glad it was for you.

  8. The movie holds a special place on my heart, I know is not very good, but lord I enjoy the hell out of it.

If they do use some ideas from the movie, I hope it is giving Mina vampire powers. I really liked the idea of Pyrrhic victory with her losing her humanity as a result of defeating Dracula.

Vampires definitely need a respectful portrayal as of late, and Mina overcoming turning into what she hated could be a nice arc.

    Anyway, I'm all for this.

  11. I was very disappointed in the movie but I thought the premise was really good, but then I love all the Victorian type detective stuff and the era irself.

So much was going on in in so many fields; inventions, exploration, medicine, literature with the first sci-fi ideas. :)

  13. Agreed!
It made me realize she was great as Nikita, but not necessarily a great actress. She felt so wooden in League.

  14. It could be fun, as a mini series. :)

  15. Let me get this right 20th century fox has made fox their bitch lol in other words if the pilot won't look good they still gonna have to pick it up to series or else be slapped with a huge penalty??

Oh ya i can see how awkward the screening gonna be at FOX studios lol

  16. They actually don't have to pick it up to series, they just have to broadcast the pilot. They can do this by maybe calling it a tv special similar to what NBC did with Mockingbird Lane

  17. either way FOX can't weasel there way out lol

  18. If this isn't over produced and they keep it true to the graphic novel, then it might be a solid series. But that's a "Big" if! 4 A SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERIENCE, I remain Nobody!!!

  19. The movie sucks so bad.... but I don't know why, I love it! I just LOVE it! It's like one of my top five guilty pleasure movies of all time.

  20. I love the idea of turning this concept into a TV show. BUT I don't have much faith in it working because

    A) it's on Fox
    and
    B) Michael Green doesn't inspire too much confidence....

  21. They could make it work by mixing up the characters and reinventing them a little bit à la Once Upon a Time, but way darker and creepier. I could see it working if they approached it from this angle. Just mixing up famous characters like in the movie has been proved, ahem, tricky.

  22. I always watch it when I catch it on tv.
