Breaking Bad Spin-off - Vince Gilligan Interview

Tim Molloy: Can you talk about the status of the possible spinoff?
Vince Gilligan:
All my writers are wonderful writers. And they're all ready to run their own shows. In this particular case, since Peter created the character, it felt more than right to be working with him on this, and we are plugging away coming up with a pitch and a take on it for the network and studio and hopefully everyone will agree that there's a really fun show to be had here. And hopefully we'll get it up and running, and then Peter will run it. I'd love to see that happen.

It's not a done deal yet, but it's definitely something we're full speed ahead on trying to get going.

Will it be a half hour or an hour?
There's a way to do both versions of the show. There's a way to make it a half-hour show and make it a little more -- I don’t want to say sitcom-y, but a little more traditionally half-hour comedic. Or there's a way to do it where it fits more snuggly in with the "Breaking Bad" universe, in which it's an hour-long show. As you can imagine with Saul Goodman as a character, a show like that would have to have plenty of humor to it. But also because he works for some pretty scary clientele sometimes, there'd be a bit of drama in it as well. We're trying to nail that down. As of yet, we haven't completely figured that out ourselves

  1. Still not sure about this but it would be kind of awesome if it was like Saul plus Badger and Skinny Pete (especially if they went the comedy route)

  2. What a team they would make. HA!

  3. I'm thinking the main cast would be Saul, Huell, Bill Burr's character (whatever his name is) and Saul's assistent who tried to bribe Walt (don't like her though). :p I'm actually working on a parody trailer with that cast in mind.

  5. *nods* If it gets picked up, and if it's a sequel and IF Badger makes it out of BB alive then he NEEDS to be a part of this show....

  6. I'm so on the fence about this idea. To me it's sounds kinda great... in theory. But I just don't know if the execution will manage to live up to the expectations. Granted these are the people who created Breaking Bad, but I just don't know... something in my gut has me being very reserved about it... it's just a feeling I can't shake....

Now that that' out of the way: I can see either format, of half hour or one hour working well. I'll say this though. Because of Saul's nature as a character I think the "less is more" approach would be better, so half hour would get my vote.
