Performances were great, but that is to be expected with such a strong cast. Liev Schrieber and Jon Voight are the leads backed up by Paula Malcomson, Eddie Marsen, Katherine Moering and Peter Jacobson and that's just the start of the great cast.
As expected the writing was solid. I feel like I know the characters and their back stories from this episode and that can be hard to accomplish with complex characters.
My impression was also strong performances and a fair amount of story. I liked the way it was filmed as well. It's very much a drama. And the general back story was set up well. My one gripe is that I hope P. M.;s character and the kids are not the continuous foils for Ray. I hope her character develops to have some bite, but her performance was still great!
I think she will be a more of a central figure to the story and not just a foil.... I have a hard time imagining they would cast someone of PM's talents only to be Ray's anchor. The kids though....
Too early to tell much, but I like the family dynamic, the generational feud between Ray and his dad, and the interjection of weekly circumstances that need fixing.
I also quite liked how Donovan sr is a bad man with trouble always following him and his son turned out to be a fixer. I guess an early home life with a drugged out abusive conman for a father is perfect training for the job! XD
Great cast, really solid characters, and an engaging plot. The only thing I didn't really like was Allen Coulter's direction. The way some of the scenes played out were way too reminiscent of The Sopranos. The Marilyn Monroe thing was the worst of it.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
You can also watch it on Showtime on demand like I did earlier. I thought it was really good.
ReplyDeleteOr 'Ray Donovan S01E01 720p HDTV x264 EVOLVE' if you live outside of US. ;)
ReplyDeleteWorth a look for anyone that has minor interest!

Showtime has itself a new hit series.
Good to know. I´ll give it a try then.
ReplyDeleteI watched it last night on Demand!
