Hannibal - 1.13 "Savoureux" - Review

"I can see you"
Yes, Will could finally see Hannibal, but it didn't help him in the end. Dr. Lecter's smile promised a challenge, which wasn't that easy to accept when you supposedly lost the one person you could trust.
Savoureux's final scene concluded with the Vide Cor Meum "Here's my heart", a song, fans of Hannibal (2001) recognize. It represented a moment of victory and a moment of bliss, but it also introduced the major conflict between the two protagonists. The consumption of a heart in a metaphorical way is referenced in Dante's Vita Nuova, and it seems fitting to see Hannibal consuming the moment. It does present a twisted act of love and appreciation for Will who is finally able to truly challenge Lecter (despite being a prisoner).

Bless the parallels

The show managed to combine continuity and symbolism, which also supported my impression that the devil lies in the details.
Seeing Will behind bars calls back to the first episode where we could see him as a free man in front of "bars". Another detail referenced the fishing rod and Hannibal's attempt to invade Will's home. This act ultimately leads to Will's absolute destruction and isolation from people who initially had their doubts.
And one of the most memorable scenes was Will's reference to Garrett Jacob Hobbs and his last words. Jack Crawford couldn't see. But Hannibal and Will could.

Season 2

One of the most disturbing questions we have to ask ourselves is the mystery surrounding Abigail's demise and Bedelia's knowledge. Does she truly know? And Abigail's death was also somehow ambiguously framed, but hopefully her story didn't end on the dining table. I'm probably in denial!!!! Honestly, that episode was one big tragedy for all characters involved, including Winston. Fannibals have too much to deal with.
Welcome, hiatus!

  3. The review of this episode is so good, you actually forced me to stop lurking and create an account here :) I agree with almost everything, but I would also mention the amazing symbolism of the stag that evolved from episode to episode and culminated in the finale showing us a Wendigo (?) with Hannibal's face (?). Also the moment when Will sees the bodies in Hannibal's office displayed and the ominous humming sound which became louder (was trying to find it on YT :P), the disturbing sounds are also great here and the atmosphere they create :) Cannot wait for Season 2...

  4. That finale was everything i hoped for and then some!! i have a severe cold which is why i waited so long to watch it, and i'm glad because if i must have squealed a half dozen times, which would have hurt lol....my two favorite moments was when Will raised the gun and softly said "I can see you now," the best part of that was Hannibal's reaction. throughout that scene, you could tell he didn't expect him to figure it out, and he actually leaned back a couple of times, and was trying to figure out what do on the fly. my favorite moments are when Will unnerves Hannibal:) i'm kind of sad as Hannibal and Will's bromance was one of the things i loved most about this show, but it's takes a back seat because i was getting a little tired of my heart breaking for the poor man:(

but my most favorite moment, by far, was at the end, when Will stood at the bars and the look he shot at Hannibal. i read in a review the look on his face was that of "A hero activated," which i felt was the perfect description. it clearly said to me that he still knows, and the game is so on. my mom and I(who kindly waited to watch it with me) actually cheered and clapped for both scenes.

we must have talked about the finale for an hour afterwards, and we probably will again a dozen times over the course of the next six months. it's funny how i thought FOR SURE it was gonna suck and only gave it a chance because, well Hannibal Lector you know? but it flew to one of my top five shows, and i can not WAIT for next season...i kind of wish AMC picked it up, because i doubt we'd have to wait til January at a minimum, but it'll be all the sweeter for the wait....at least that's what i tell myself.

okay can Will bludgeon Hannibal with a tire iron now????
