    I'd say interesting characters. They can carry a show for some time, even if the plot is subpar.

    plot, cast, characters, and the writers behind the scenes. I used to kind of 'care' about whether a show was on a particular network, but not so much anymore.

    Honestly I think it is often the network. A good cast and a good plot sounds really great, but if it is on the wrong network, I tend to be less interested. I am more interested in what new shows FX, AMC and HBO is developing than all the ones we are hearing about at the moment.

    I try and watch most of the new shows at least once and what keeps me coming back is a connection with the characters. I wanted to like The Secret Circle but just did not care what happened to any of the characters. Loved Supernatural, Veronica Mars and Roswell with the first ep.

    Plot and cast. I will also say that buzz surrounding it means absolutely nothing to me. Case in point--"Big Bang Theory" and "Modern Family". Two totally unfunny shows that I wasted time watching only because of good reviews. Never again!

    I never ever decide by what channel it is on, that's when I miss the under rated but awesome shows. I also don't usually follow the buzz, usually favored shows by critics end up being over-rated.


    I start by interest in the plot, then the trailer, and writing, etc. Acting plays a role too, but I've never had much issues with acting on any of the shows I've decided to try out.

    since i don't read book i need new stories in my head and that is new shows for me. and it needs good plot development and good character development with an appropriate cast(age and stuff) for the type of show it is.

    Other: combos of AT LEAST 2 of any of the below


    - Plot sounds interesting
    - Cast
    - Interesting Characters
    - Character Development
    - Writing
    - Plot Development
    - Crew




    Buzz, Network and Advertizing might be considered as supporting factors (for example: if it's a half hour multicam I'd have more faith in it's CBS than FOX)

    99% the cast. For example: I already know I'm going to watch Crises because of Gillian Anderson and Camp because of Rachel Griffiths. I would have watched Hatfield & McCoys... and so on.

    For new shows, it's personnel all the way for me. Descriptions we get of premises are usually pretty broad, and interesting characters and compelling drama can really be written against any backdrop. If I see creative minds and actors that I like, I'm in. For instance, this year I'll probably pick up Crazy Ones (the combination of David E Kelley and Robin Williams is intriguing), and SHIELD (you had me at Joss Whedon).


    Once a show is already established, I go pretty much entirely off the opinions of my friends with similar tastes who have watched a show (mixing in reviews from the internet if no one I know is familiar).

    First, I check reviews and awards. Then cast. Then, I read the summary from the show, and finally the plots and the characters :)

    I usually watch if the promos look and the plot sounds interesting. Depending on the show, I also watch for the cast.

    Cast and premise for sure. I started watching New Girl for Zoe Deschanel though the plot I didn't really care about (only saw season 1 though). Secret Circle (RIP) for Britt Robertson from Life Unexpected (another RIP) and Thomas Decker (7th Heaven!). This year Arrow because the plot sounded awesome (big Smallville fan) and Katie Cassidy from a couple shows. Beauty and the Beast for Kristen Kreuk (and Austin Basis was great on Life Unexpected). I'm pretty much a sucker for fantasy, sci-fi, supernatural shows =P. The only 'new' show I started without knowing any of the cast was The Cape (which worked out great for me...).
