The Mentalist - Season 6 - Bruno Heller discusses the Finale Next Season

Thanks to Nerwen for the heads up.

The seven Red John suspects were revealed on Sunday night’s The Mentalist finale. Or were they? With Red John seemingly knowing everything that’s in Patrick Jane’s head — including his list — how much can we trust that the elusive serial killer is really among those seven names? And what can we expect from The Mentalist in season 6? Below, creator Bruno Heller answers our burning questions about the finale and beyond.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So after all that craftiness on Patrick Jane’s part, Red John is still a step ahead of him. So can we trust that the list is accurate if Red John is so willing to confirm it?

Bruno Heller: Yes, we can trust that list. As much as much as Red John has been one step ahead, Lorelei Martins’ intervention changed the game. So as much as Red John is trying to play from a position of strength in reality Jane has gotten a lot closer. This last episode of the season really sets us up for next season: The hunt is on, no messing about.

Once again, you’re making moves that make me wonder if Patrick Jane is Red John — after all, how else could he know that memory from inside his head? But by saying Red John is definitely on the list, can we rule out the theory held by some fans that Jane is actually Red John?

Heller: I would say that definitively: Jane is not Red John.
Sunday’s guest star (Michael Hogan) made a comment about Lisbon having romantic feelings for Jane. Will that get explored at all next season?

Heller: Certainly. To a degree, it’s always been explored. It’s an undercurrent there. As the next season goes on, yes, as the search for Red John culminates, those underlying feelings will come out.

  4. It's not hard to guess. The whole video was a magic trick. Every bit of information Red John throws at Jane has been obtained by Red John, he did not divine it.
The list of names, Bob Kirkland gave it to him. He stole Jane's work and started working on it himself. Stands to reason Red John, being the clever guy that he is, did some research of his own and figured out who the other suspects could be. Jane himself said he did the eliminations based on who could have been there for all murders and came up with just seven names. Red John did the same.
The happy memory thing. There will be an explanation for it. Jane thinks he hasn't told anyone about it, but he has not always been in the right sense of mind. There are a couple of ways he could have figured it out. One, the time Jane was in psychiatric care after the death of his family, he could have told his shrink and forgotten about it. Two, he could have told his wife and Red John could have gotten it out of her before he killed her. There maybe other possibilities but none spring to mind right now
But it will be nice to see the show deconstruct Red John's message over the course of the next season.

  5. I have never been a believer of the PJ=RJ theory. But what did this episode do, that others have not, to disprove it?

  6. So it might not be the final season? Hmm...interesting. Though it does make one wonder where is the story could go from there when they do catch that psychopath.

  7. Season 6 hasn't started yet, we should look at the ratings\audience for next fall. Anyway, if they catch Red John next season, the show won't be over: there are still chances to look forward.

  8. Oh...yeah! I didn't realize that. That makes it more interesting. Perhaps Kirkland has no real connection to Red John and he's just another guy obsessed with Red John.

I think Kirkland is suspecting Jane is Red John and that is why he is working with Bertram to try to catch Jane

  12. Holy fuck, I think you just blew my mind. I really hope that's why he's interested in Jane. Imagine that. Jane thinks Kirkland could be Red John and Kirkland thinks Jane could be Red John. Hopefully, there will be confrontation between them and they team up together to hunt him down.

  13. It may or mayn't be. Bruno Heller has hinted in previous interviews that he could see the show's continuing past the Red John story (mostly by dealing with the aftereffects of Jane's catching his "Moby Dick"). However, considering the severe drop in viewership the show experienced this year, I'd have to wonder if continuing would be a wise move.

I'm just throwing my 2 cents in here ... did anyone else think that when Patrick realised that his little room (with pictures and notes on the wall) had been broken into he simply smiled, then burned it all ... he was OVERLY secret about his room, when he explained to Lisbon that he did it ALL in his head, all of those names, places and people. We have NEVER seen Patrick have to write things down before; he has plans of crazy detail all planned out in his head, with all of the outcomes already thought out.
My thoughts (and pure speculation here) is that he KNEW that someone would break in and has put false / incorrect information on the wall to lead said person off his real plans.
I do find it interesting that the video must have been made BEFORE the room was broken into ... but still think that Kirkland is odd, and Patrick now knows exactly who broke into his room and has led them down the garden path ... I hope that (like the vegas trick to meet Lorelli) this is all part of a bigger plot twist for the start of Season 6 :D

Yeah I thought it odd too, that he had a map and papers and written down information, especially when he has never had to before. Also, he wedged a small bit of paper between the door of his work room and the wall, as if he anticipated someone breaking in. Also, we know Jane to be intelligent enough not to make it obvious that he was working on the Red John cases by having a big room to himself filled with all the information and facts and possible suspects and whereabouts, that he obviously is very guarded and secretive about. Its almost as if he were very indirectly defying RJ and confirming his suspects. Although, his reaction to the video in the final scene belies that theory.I cant wait for season 6!!

  23. I cannot wait for season 6 anymore, I wanna know Patrick's father is Red John or not?
