Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)

Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

SUNDAY 5/05/13 Metered Markets
Clean Overnight Sweep for CBS

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.4/11
ABC 3.9/ 7
Fox 3.6/ 6
NBC 2.8/ 5

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Sunday 5/07/12:
Fox: +44, CBS: + 3, ABC: -25, NBC: -35

———-

-Winners:
“60 Minutes” (CBS), “The Amazing Race” (CBS), “The Mentalist” (CBS)

-Down Considerably:
“Once Upon a Time” (ABC), “Revenge” (ABC). “Celebrity Apprentice” (NBC)

-Losers (Excluding Repeats):
“Red Widow” (ABC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy Sunday overnight victory for CBS, which populated the evening with granddaddy “60 Minutes” (#1 for the night: 8.0 rating/14 share at 7 p.m.), the two-hour season-finale of “The Amazing Race” (5.9/ 9 from 8-10 p.m.) and the season-finale of “The Mentalist” (6.0/10 at 10 p.m.), which did not benefit by moving to Sunday this season. CBS ranked first in each of the eight half-hours and “The Amazing Race” finished only three percent below its year-ago season-ender (6.1/10 on 5/06/12). “The Mentalist,” meanwhile, built by a hefty 43 percent from failed year-ago occupant “NYC 22” (4.2/ 7). But it may not be enough to win the time period among adults 18-49 opposite deteriorating “Celebrity Apprentice” on NBC.

“Celebrity Apprentice” on NBC scored a 3.5/ 6 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m., which was a considerable 27 percent below the 4.8/ 8 on the year-ago evening. SPOLIER ALERT: If you do not want to know who was fired last night, then skip the rest of the paragraph. But the departure of Marilu Henner in place of grumpy Trace Adkins last night only proved that not all reality is real. Based on his attitude and lack of cooperation, the country music artist should have been sent packing.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was a repeat of singing competition “The Voice” at a 2.1/ 4 from 7-9 p.m.

Over at ABC, veteran “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (which will outlive us all) opened with a 3.8/ 7 in the overnights at 7 p.m., which was only seven percent below the 4.1/ 7 one year earlier. But the 8-10 p.m. airings of “Once Upon a Time” (#3: 4/8/ 8) and “Revenge” (#2: 4.5/ 7) remained down by double-digit percentages year-to-year. And a 2.6/ 5 (#3) for the season-finale of freshman “Red Widow” at 10 p.m. means there is no way there will be a second season. One year earlier, failed drama “GBC” was 58 percent higher at a 4.1/ 7.

Individual program results for Fox’s animated combination of a repeat of “The Simpsons,” “The Cleveland Show,” the regularly scheduled installment of “The Simpsons,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “”Family Guy” and “American Dad” are excluded due to a potential late start.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)

  1. Not surprised about Once, instead of having a direction its just all over the place.

  2. If OUAT is "down considerably" and last week they had a series low at 2.0, how is it going to be this week? A 1.8? 1.7? Less? Where is this going? And just as last week's, yesterday's episode was also excellent. The ratings are in no way reflecting the quality right now.

  3. Down from last year, not last week..
It had 4.7 last week and 4.8 this week, but that does not say much on the demo ratings.

Actually, I think it means that it's down from last year

  5. Well, it's in no danger of cancellation at this point, anyhow. Given that it's still considerably popular and will probably get a spin-off soon, I think a Season 3 renewal is in the bag. My main concern is for its future after Season 3. The show has improved quite a bit over the past few weeks, but it's going to need to halt its downward ratings trend completely and regain some ground in order to get a fourth season. I really hope the game-changer at the end of the finale pays off.

  6. Word. Wish it would be different but they did this to themselves.

  7. It's absolutely reflective of the quality right now, last week's episode was an abomination. The worst one yet. Haven't seen last night's though, I'm actually dreading it.

  8. Well downvote me all you want, Once's writers got themselves to thank for the drop in ratings.

  9. Whether or not the show is bad or good is up to the viewer not you.

  10. Sad for OUAT and Revenge considering the finally got too speed with things. I think The double ep Revenge finale is to test if Revenge can handle the 10pm timeslot and move maybe SHIELD to the 9pm slot which will help both OUAT and Revenge but thats just me.

  11. I sense adjustments for FOX in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Right? This season has been TERRIBLE. The last three episodes have just been so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You mean like how the show has dropped millions of viewers this year? Yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I wouldn't say it's ''just'' the past three episodes, but I agree they're worse than the rest.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have nothing to add to that.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well, yeah, the whole thing has been a mess but the nonsense of the last few has been terrible. Like, how did the last episode make any sense at all except that they were trying to set up something for the finale?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, true. They seem to want to tell a certain story with the finale and obviously didn't care how they got there, there was very little enjoyable about the last episode.

  18. I personally loved last week's episode, and I think there were many issues in the first season too. I'm going to see last night's episode tonight and I hope I like it too.

  19. The idea behind it was interesting and the acting and emotional depth was great but it came far too late in the season. It would have been much better served earlier, when it didn't need such out of character actions in order to move the plot forward.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Once put UP not down to a 2.2 demo.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Pretty much. Honestly, this episode should have been in place of In the Name of the Brother or Tiny, putting the emotions from The Cricket Game flashbacks close together without needing to hammer home how the Snow/Regina interactions mirror each other in back to back episodes. It also would have fit with Regina being in a vindictive mode about Emma kidnapping Henry and the Charmings denying her motherhood; then it would have been about, say, Cora and Regina killing Rumple, taking Henry and destroying Storybrooke for the Enchanted Forest.

The 'trigger' still exists, it's in the back of the viewers' consciousness but perhaps taken away from Regina as a gesture of 'good will' to Henry or something. The core conflicts would still exist, it wouldn't have taken people too far out of their characterizations (Regina's has been terribly back and forth), etc.

  22. Its been bad and i think everyone knows it unless their are people wearing rose colored glasses.

    Yay for the Amazing Race!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I haven't either, and to be honest i'm not looking forward to it..

    ReplyDelete
  25. Considering Once is the show that, last week, had a character tell her adopted son that she is good and can be a "hero" right before she stated she'll commit mass murder by destroying the entire town they live in... I'm frankly stunned its ratings are as high as they are. (Go on, downvote me to oblivion.)

  26. Once Upon A Time was AMAIZING LAST NIGHT!!! Loved It!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Have I missed you not liking Once? Can't remember if you have said anything about it before? :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah, that would've been infinitely better. But that's assuming the writers plan that far ahead, which they obviously don't.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You must of missed it my friend, for i have done my fair share of bitching about the show. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Alright, I'm going to go back to old articles see if I can find it. :) Always curious to know what you think!

Sorry I missed it, too much on my mind lately. ;)
