‘Wipeout” (ABC), “Community” (NBC), “Beauty and the Beast” (CW), “Hannibal” (NBC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy Thursday overnight victory for CBS, which bested No. 2 Fox by 1.7 rating points. But all was not a bed of roses on the Eye net with overrated 10 p.m. freshman drama “Elementary” second behind competing “Scandal” on ABC (6.2 rating/11 share vs. 6.8/12), with retention out of the season-finale of “Person of Interest” (#1: 8.6/14 at 9 p.m.) of 72 percent.

Earlier in the evening on CBS, “The Big Bang Theory” topped the night, of course, with a 10.5/18 at 8 p.m. And that led into the season-finale of “Two and a Half Men,” featuring guest star Marilu Henner, at a second-place 8.3/14 at 8:30 p.m. Considering the “half,” Angus T. Jones, is being shipped off to Japan, it will really just be “Two Men” next season. And let’s do hope that the scene stealing Holland Taylor does return. As for Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik), it looks like “The Big Bang Theory” might have to be “R” rated next season!

Rumor has it that CBS will be expanding to two-hours of comedies on Thursday next season. Stay tuned.

“American Idol” on Fox remained down, but not out with a second-pace 8.4/14 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was 21 percent below the 10.7/18 one year earlier. That led into the fourth season-finale of “Glee” at a third-place 4.3/ 7 at 9 p.m., which held only 47 percent of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Idol” (9.1/15). While “Glee” was worthy of a fall 2013 pick-up, the two season renewal was one two many. For more on “American Idol,” scroll down to Other Network News.

In season-premiere news, familiar ABC summer occupant “Wipeout” returned with a disappointing 3.0/ 5 from 8-9 p.m., which was 36 percent below failed year-ago drama “Missing” (4.7/ 8 on 5/10/12). Veteran lead-out “Grey’s Anatomy” perked up to second at 9 p.m., with a 6.7/11, which was eight percent below one year earlier (7.3/12 on 5/10/12). And aforementioned “Scandal,” also from Shonda Rhimes, won the 10 p.m. hour with a 6.8/12.

Over at NBC, on the fence “Community” closed its abbreviated season with a mere fourth-place 2.1/ 4 at 8 p.m., and its potential renewal is dependent on the need for more episodes in off-network. At present, there are 84.

Next on NBC was a repeat of “The Office” (#4t, 1.7/ 3 at 8:30 p.m.), followed by a one-hour episode of the next-to-last episode of “The Office” (#4: 3.2/ 5 from 9-10 p.m.) and recent drama entry “Hannibal,” which could only muster a 1.9/ 3 at 10 p.m. (#3). The gory nature of the storytelling on “Hannibal” is not, unfortunately, synonymous with ample tune-in.

Next was The CW with its pairing of “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.8/ 3), which was down by 14 percent year-to-year, and the unnecessarily renewed “Beauty and the Beast” at a 1.0/ 2 at 9 p.m. (#5). Comparably, that was down by 17 percent from failed year-ago occupant “The Secret Circle” (#5: 1.2/ 2 on 5/10/12).

  1. Holy Mother! I think Scandal finally hit a 3.0

    ReplyDelete
  2. Vampire Diaries had one of its best episodes last night! I really hope ratings increased from last week.

  3. Your snarky commentaries do nothing to legitimize your work as a statistician. I do believe that getting a rise out of your readers is akin to even bad publicity is good thing. You're a mere number cruncher, but some web site should let you write television reviews that piss people off. I think you'd be really good at it.

  5. Who downvoted me? How rude!!

  6. What can NBC expect when they give viewers the impression of giving up on the 8-9pm hour : episodes 4.09, 4.10, 4.11 and 4.13 of Community have all aired before reruns of The Office at 8:30pm. Airing in front of Big Bang Theory and American Idol is pretty tough, but not having new episodes as a companion for the past month is only making things harder.

I know it's probably not true, otherwise this network would be a complete trainwreck, but it feels like NBC is basing their renewals of Community and Hannibal on today's ratings ; they sure love making us wait after they announced the cancellation of all their crappy shows last night, and they're making a decision today, I believe, why else would they wait for today?

If they're doing something along the lines of "today, if Community does 1.0 on A18-49 we cancel the show, if it's 1.1 we renew it for 13 eps, 1.2/1.3 we renew it for 22/24 eps, and if it's 1.4/1.5 we renew it for 2 more seasons + a movie", not even taking into account Live+3 rating (I assume DVR is important for a show like this), then they would really be a bunch of fu--formidable, intelligent people with an acute sense of management, priorities, and acknowledgement of their existing forces (because if you can't have a mainstream hit, you might want to keep a cult fan favorite around).

    ReplyDelete
  7. Networks do not renew a show based on a single data point.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's NBC we're talking about, they're pretty weird :D.

I know that, but I was just wondering why they'd wait for this afternoon when they announced their new shows and cancelled shows yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well i think there is a Reason why they didn't cancel "Community" yesterday. And i hope that because of the Seasonfinal ratings. So let's see and hope thats somewhere somone see's how extraordinary that series is and give it another chance!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Not all of their shows. Go On and The New Normal are also on the bubble and they didn't air last night

    ReplyDelete
  11. LOL at Marc, what would he say about Nikita and TCD ultra unnecessarily renewals LOL seriously!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. But Go On and The New Normal's future could be dependant of Community's. Anyway, as I said, I know they're not doing that, but it just feels like they are.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I get your point, but yeah I still feel that they won't do it that way

    ReplyDelete
  14. unnecessarily renewed “Beauty and the Beast” ?? Do you mind about the thousands of fans over wide that follow this show? I think not. But can you respect us at least?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Nikita's renewal is more justifiable then beauty and the beast's, although i can get the beauty and the beast renewal. The Carrie Diaries I simply cannot get.

    ReplyDelete
  16. TCD and B&tB can only dream about a season average as high as Nikita had its first season. I can never understand when people compare between shows without taking into account in which seasons they are.

    ReplyDelete
  17. While that is true, you are comparing apples with oranges. To compare averages from different seasons you need to take into account "inflation", as in normal rate of decline season to season. In the season Nikita's first season average, broadcast scripted show average was 2.32. This season, so far, is 1.87 - that is a 24% drop! Nikita had a first season average of 0.9. In real terms, today that would be a 0.69, applying the decline rate of 24%! Beauty and the Beast so far has averaged a 0.62, so while it is down from Nikita's first season by 10%, it is not like it is down by THAT much! (For the record, I love Nikita and I have never watched beauty and the beast, I am just going by the numbers here)

    ReplyDelete
  18. well if you consider the fact that the CW needed to plug any gaps in the shedule then Nikita and TCD's renewals make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  19. my thoughts were that since the CW passed on picking up anymore new shows they needed to ensure that they had 10 hours of original programming to air in the fall and wanted a few more hours to add as mid season replacements. 12 shows isnt that much when you consider how many shows might fail in the fall and how many gaps may need pludding. This season they picked up 2 extra shows and still have gaps in the shedule now.

    ReplyDelete
  20. you might also want to consider that the CW as a whole is down in average ratings year to year.

    ReplyDelete
  21. SCANDAL!!!! I was waiting for this!!!! LOVE THAT SHOW. LOVE.

    ReplyDelete
  22. dont kid yourself Beauty was renewed as schedule spackle, if the CW could afford to cancel it and replace it with a new show they would but alas the'r resources are limited and they had enough gaps in the shedule to fill already. Depending on how the new shows do next season Beauty will likely be one of the first heads on the chopping board.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 10% is still enough and the difference is even larger when reducing their 1st episode. Also, I think the CW average should be taken into consideration and not the broadcast one.

    ReplyDelete
  24. American Idol scored a 1.2?!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. TVD's average remained quite stable these past three years.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's probably a mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sorry, that should have been Wipeout

    ReplyDelete
  28. Scandal : 3.2 IT'S AWESOME FOR AN AWESOME EPISODE

    ReplyDelete
  29. good for Scandal but there is nothing in this world can beat TBBT and THM

    ReplyDelete
  30. 3.2? Oh Jesus! YAY

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes! Arrow 0.9, TVD 0.9, spn 1.0 is no.1 on CW this week!
even if TVD adjust up to 1.0, SPN will still be on par, yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm sorry for Elementary, CBS must move it away from Scandal.

    ReplyDelete
  33. What is going on, I thought now the penultimate episode of TVD would rise, and now it's the same at a series low :(

    ReplyDelete
  34. Holy shit, Scandal! That's amazing. I hope it stays at a 3.2, but I wonder if it'll end up getting adjusted down later.

    ReplyDelete
  35. are you kidding me ??? then what about the carrie diares' and nikitas' ratings...i m not talking about heart of dixie because it has alost the same numbers with BATB...besides BATB has millions of fans worlwide...and for me some people have respect and some other don't...i m not saying that the ratings etc. couldn't be better but it got renewed for a reason - fans wanted this and fought for it ...you can't erase all that effort by being disrespectful...btw congratulations to all the shows that got renewed !!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Woohoo! Go Scandal! Such an awesome show. At least Hannibal is steady.....

    ReplyDelete
  37. The Batb fans are very passionate about this show. They tweet, posts n did whatever they can to help it get renewed.I am happy for all the shows that got renewed like our BATB.Wish people would feel what we felt when our fave show was on the bubble. We are happy n thankful we have something to look forward.

    ReplyDelete
  38. True but I think It's handling well against Scandal, no telling if a new show will do better or worse

So much rage in the comments.

Beauty and The Beast fanbase should realize that the show WAS unnecessarily renewed. It does not matter on how much you love it for whatever reason it might be. It is NOT pulling any good ratings and ratings are abysmal EVEN for CW. And its a failure in terms of critical reception too.

The only reason that show was renewed was because there's absolutely NOTHING CW can replace it with.

    ReplyDelete
  41. There is no rage in the comments, just appreciating good things that are coming--BATB season 2

    ReplyDelete
  42. Uh Oh, CBS might have 2 hours of comedies next season, not cool. POI could be kicked to 10 pm to compete with Scandal.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The problem with those two shows is that they pulled 1.0(Go On, which i like) and 1.4(The New Normal) on the Finale. Shows tend to drop 20% in their sophomore year, so that means dropping below 1.0(The New Normal already droped several times, reaching 0.7 once or twice). Those can't stand for themselves, they are to lead-in dependant. So they don't work for syndication and they don't work for promote a new show... So why renew them?

So why renew those that are way far from syndication? Community has steady numbers on a Killer Slot(Against TBBT) and it's 4 episodes away for full syndication(88) and 16 away from archieving Gold Status(100 episodes). It already has deals with Hulu, Netflix Latin America and Comedy Central, deals that seems sure to adquiere the whole pack.

Also, Community is a shared production(NBC and SONY) so it's not an expensive show to produce and SONY WANTS MORE EPISODES, THEY ACTUALLY PUT A VIDEO ON IT'S OFICIAL YOUTUBE CHANNEL ABOUT A FIFTH SEASON...

I would make a 22 episode order or two seasons of 13 episodes. NBC never is gonna get another steady show like this to put against TBBT... I would love to see how a new show does against it...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh my effffing God ... Take a bow Scandal!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. we are not saying that the show couldn't get betters ratings but if you take into considaration the other bubble shows it was the best ...and it's getting better and better....i mean the last 7-8 episodes were beyond amazing and so much better that it was ...plus it wouldn't be bad if they were a little more respectfull to the fans of the show...i think that before you judge it you should watch it first...and if you don't like it it's ok and i ll respect it...but you can't say stuff because you don't like it ...btw...i m happy for all shows that got renewed congrats to all fans for keeping their shows !!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. InvestedInYourFuture11 May 2013 at 11:26

Blame Plec for killing the show and anything that was even remotely interesting in it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think, more than that

    ReplyDelete
  48. SCANDAL DESERVES THAT WIN. JAW DROPPING, EYE POPPING, JDNSJDNKJSD. IT WAS AMAZING. FINALLY GETTING THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES. DESERVES.
