Loved it! Very much the end of chapter and a new beginning.

  3. It was a good episode, but honestly, it felt more like a season opener to me than a season finale. Last episode felt more like a season finale.

    BRILLIANT finale.

I really felt sorry for Root when Harold betrayed her. For once she was doing something that was relatively right and he did not trust her back. Well I guess whatever she does now is entirely his fault, as Machine, unlike Finch, does seem to trust her back as proven by the last cliffhanger call it made to her.

    5/5

  5. Holy crap! That was stupendous! Not only was it the end of a chapter and the beginning of an old one, but it also teased the mysterious new woman which was teased about 4 weeks ago. My only complaint is that there was no Fusco in this episode. Where the heck was he? Maybe he'll help Carter during the Season 3 Premiere with her current predicament? Which kinda off brings me into my next few points, I'm glad to see that many of us here were wrong about this being the end for Root, although it was funny and fitting finding her in that particular location at the end. :) So it seems that the writers and producers still have some story elements that they want to continue well into Season 3. Elias and HR still have some unfinished business, Hersch is still the big government douche/puppet/assassin taking orders like a slave, Shaw went off on her own once again, Decima is still at large, so is that evil version of James Bond that was introduced in Episode 7 or 8 of this season, etc. Overall there are still many fascinating story threads that are yet to be concluded in this great TV series. I can't help but wonder though if Root will once be identified with a red square next season and be a foil to Team Machine once again, or remain an ally. Overall, it was an excellent season and there's no reason to complain from this finale. It was made very clear by the TV guide article that this would feel more like the end of a chapter and the start of a new one, and less like a cliff-hanger.

  6. Just a minor correction there InvestedInYourFuture, it was made perfectly clear that The Machine would be under the control of the person who answers the phone call, regardless of who they are. It has nothing to do with trusting anybody. Besides, The Machine also made the call to Reese and Finch, not just her at the end. It isn't Finch's fault, and in fact I don't blame him for not trusting her one bit. Did you forget that this woman went to great lengths to manipulate him and Reese on the Season 1 Finale, and had him kidnapped just to get what she wanted? And even a few days after he was rescued, he was still traumatized by that event. Not to mention the fact that she was only helping them for her own purposes, so once again I can't say that I blame him for not wanting to trust her with the Machine.

The admin rights expired around the time they entered the nuclear plant.

The calls at the end were Machine's OWN CHOICE, just as finch said.

So yeah. Machine CHOSE to call Root.

  8. Truly awesome! One of the best shows on TV! Gets better every week! Wait... I feel like I've wrote that last week... and the week before... and the week before. This show just gets better and better.

Reese + Shaw = don't get in their f***ing way! Total bad ass team right there. Sucked to see what happened to Ingram, I was kind of hoping he was still alive and in hiding. But makes sense why Finch took up the reigns, sad to see he had to let go of Grace to do it though. And please, please don't let the mystery woman be Grace, I was really afraid there at the end. They'll probably introduce her at some point next season then reveal she's the mystery woman later, or who knows, I can't predict Person of Interest.

No Fuscoe again sucked, and very little Bear. But I'm curious where we'll go with Elias and HR now since Carter now is a threat to HR.

Finally, if I understood it right, seems that both Reese and Root are going to be the new "gods" in the Machine's eyes?

  9. jaw on the floor.... "was this an absolutely fantastic ep/finale with mind boggling possibilities to come next season?"..... "Absolutely"... lol

  10. I loved how the machine freed itself using phony requisitions.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Epic finale. Now the machine control it self, I'm scary about that. Three phones ring. I need season 3 now this open questions is gonna kill me slowly.

Great scenes with Reese and Shaw, that is good duo.

Carter saving Elias, I not see this coming.

Great moment revealing the plot of Finch and Ingram. Heartbreaking moment with Finch see the reaction of Grace of his death.

So who is the new player in the govern?

    I miss Fusco.

    ReplyDelete
  12. This was awesome! And we're supposed to wait all summer for the new season? DAMN! It was an intense finale! I loved this episode! Great acting by all cast!

    ReplyDelete
  13. My only complaint about the season finale and the question I kept asking my Dad as we were watching it was Where's Fusco?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Please, Please, Please make Shaw a main person on this show!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think it's a bit more complicated than that. Finch freed the Machine with that virus. As I understood it, it was already free when it called Reese and Root and everything that followed was all the Machine's masterplan to take out its ''enemies''.
Also, I'm not sure if Root was acting entirely out of self interest. It seemed to me like she wanted to do exactly what Finch did. She just had a way more violent way of getting it done, while she really didn't need to. The Machine was eventually smart enough to free itself.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Whoa, this show definitely outsmarted me. And all of its characters lol. Even though I like a good bit of drama, the fact that they were ''never'' really in danger and that it was all Finch's and the Machine's masterplan was a brilliant twist. I have NO idea what will happen next!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Love the Reese/ Shaw dynamic!
She adds so much to the series for me.

Having the Machine as overwatch makes for a more efficient operating team in the field...
    "3 0' clock" "4 o'clock" "11 o'clock"
Damn that is fun! Like some real life TPS video game!

    Interesting note:
Lawrence Szilard was an homage to Leo Szilard I'm pretty sure. He worked with Enrico Fermi and patented the nuclear reactor and other scientific breakthroughs, but does not get the press like his partners did due to never actually publishing his works.

The wedding drive-by rescue! Mazel tov!
    Ohmuhgawd that had me rolling!

So glad Carter stepped in to save Elias!
Elias is one of my favorite secondary character on any series I watch!

I always knew Finch was up to something more, but did not suspect he was in relative control (or at least knew exactly what was going on) the entire time. Interesting twist to have the Machine set free as a safe mode default. Also interesting that the Machine now has a personal connection to Root as well as Finch and Reese! XD

I wonder if it will have a personal relationship with Decima or strictly business? XD

The mystery woman is a nice cliffhanger touch. There is always someone behind the face of the company or powers that be. Her voice sounded familiar to me, but I cannot place it. However I did not think it was Carry Preston. Obviously they could have distorted her voice or she could have used an accent to cover it up.....

This was a awesome episode for me!
It pushed the myth arc along nicely, wrapped up some threads while exposing new loose ends and kept the two best villains on network TV alive and in the mix!

The only thing missing was Fusco!

    Kudos Team Machine!

    ReplyDelete
  18. That. Was. F*c*ing AWESOME!!!

We finally found out how Nathan died and how Finch got his limp but I think for me the most interesting revelation was that Finch's opinion of the machine was such a 180 from the guy who taught the machine how to protect itself.

Root's reaction to the empty room was just perfect.

I told my best friend, last week, that I didn't believe for one moment that Reese doubted Finch. I was happy to be proven right.
    just Effin Awesome

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sadly only an OK finale... I expected much more after a bunch of super awesome episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So now that the machine is free, does it slowly begin to strive for control over people? That is, after all, one of the most frequently used plotlines of science fiction isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  21. "It seemed to me like she wanted to do exactly what Finch did. She just had a way more violent way of getting it done, while she really didn't need to. The Machine was eventually smart enough to free itself."

    Agreed! Well said.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thought it was good, but not awesome. It felt more like a set up episode, then a season finale.

So is the Fairy/Fairy God Mother the machine or does she relate to Ma'm?

Guessed for Ma'am (note: Ma-aM is "mirrored" and ma is a word for Mother and am is a word for "me" or morning...)

    1. Zoe Morgan

    2. POI we have met before

    3. New character

    4. Character we thought was dead. Hanna Frey?

    5. Character that is blood related to one of the main cast.

Bad Robot Stuff: "Not In Portland" -LOST, 'The Greater Good'-Sayid-Government uses suicide bomber -LOST, Pala Ferry/Liberty Island & Ferry -FRINGE & LOST cross over, Amy Acker was a Fairy (one that relates to FRINGE with her names Astrid/Nova) on OUAT...

Love the plot with " a virus in a virus"! Very Clever it makes the machine and it's choices more complicated, but it's now it is "free"!

No Fusco was REALLY bizzar, but I'm glad because that means he's alive and will be apart of season 3!

Well looks like Carter didn't lie low either! Free the machine and Free Elias all in the same episode! That seems deadly, but I guess she wants HR off her back?!

Really enjoyed the Reese and Shaw scenes, especially how the machine helped them get what they needed, while also forcing them to help other people.

Interesting to see how Ingram died and how that played into Grace believing Finch was dead.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think the machine is free to contact whoever it wants to aid those in need, subject to the rules in the code (maybe by Harold). So I don't think the showrunners wanted to make it look like reese and root are the new gods, rather that The Machine has a team (root, harold, reese, government, shaw) at its disposal now. In this way, more people can be saved.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That was definitely not Zoe Morgan. The voice sounded older and there was a Variety or TV Guide article a couple of weeks back stating that there would be a female character appearing in her 50's.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I missed it! Did it say "new" female character or just female character.

To me the voice was familiar, but of course I might recognize the actress whomever she may be.

Note: Paige Turco (who plays Zoe Morgan) was born in 1965 and makes her close to 50.)

If it's a new character that's cool. It was just a guess.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think it's interesting too. One Finch's best lines in the series is "Only the paranoid survive!" -While to a good extent, I think that is true (the better prepared one is the greater their chances of survival), it obviously can defeat it's own purpose when one alienates themselves to the point where none of the connections they have made will mean anything. Life would become parasitical.

It's def an interesting contrast considering Root's history with her childhood friend and considering the idea that the machine is going to have to choose who'll it will trust now and if any of the characters can continue to trust it!???

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have a few gripes about the episode, but it was still an awesome episode.

The sniper scene where a highly trained soldier missed Root from such a short distance was pretty awkward to say the least.

Also, why did they bother letting Root live, what are they, morons?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I didn't see that article! Hmm. It's possible that they didn't show her face because they simply hadn't cast her yet, but if there was an actual casting call or something that would probably not be the case.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I thought the same thing about the sniper scene, but I gave up realism on this show in Season 1 honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I did not read the article either, but I took that as a place holder for a yet to be cast female villain when I watched it. So that makes sense to me!

    ReplyDelete
  31. - The ''4 o'clock'' / ''10 o'clock'' etc thing was awesome. It should have been ridiculous, but it wasn't because I can totally believe that it's possible. :p The Machine POV shot in that scene was a bit weird. It looked CGI'd and like it was a moving camera. Well, whatever.

-Shaw asked if Reese was talking to their fairy godmother. Interesting, with the ''fairy'' being mentioned in the flashbacks (or did they say ''ferry''? :p)

-Shaw turned from blue to yellow right after Reese told her about the Machine. That confirms my theory about the colors!

-Not very smart of Terney to admit to Carter that he was part of HR. He's going dowwnnnnn.

-Oh man, how I loved those sort ''saving the numbers'' scenes in between everything else. They were so random and funny.

-''To help you feel less inadequate while I drive this thing.'' lol!

    -I don't like Finch's new glasses.

-Reese finally finds out about Jessica's number coming up. That was VERY briefly shown in the second episode of the show! I always said that I expected that (oh, and the fact that Finch almost got him killed) to create some conflict between him and Finch, but I was SO pleased when Reese said it was all his own fault for not being able to tell her to wait for him. That says a lot about him.

-The flashback storyline was a bit predictable, but that didn't make it any less AWESOME. The only thing I didn't like about it was that there was no explosion. Just a white flash. It seemed a bit silly.

-Shaw stayed behind for a moment to look at Szilard's briefcase. Did that ever come up again after that?

-Shaw driving the car off that bridge... Awesome. Those guys faces were priceless.

-Elias: ''Oh, THAT sort of prisoner transfer.'' Line of the night! So exciting that he's finally free. And that Carter was the one that freed him, in her cool new Team Machine outfit. Looking forward to seeing more of Action Hero Carter!

-You'd think the people protecting the Machine would be more dedicated to their jobs. Root convinced him to open the door quite easily. Then again, I guess he was protecting an empty room. Neat detail, with the yellow and blue wiring hanging from the ceiling. It seemed like that was intentional.

-As I said, great parallels between Finch and Root. Finch's inability to trust other people, and Root's disappointment when she learned that she couldn't trust Finch. She's not a complete villain, and he's not a complete good guy. Good stuff.

-I loved that Hersh used his prisoner to kill Nathan. And the fact that Hersh actually outlived Special Counsel! That gives Finch a chance at revenge. Looking forward to seeing that hehe.

-Virusception! I wonder what will be different next year now that the Machine is free. If it will just get back to sending the numbers... Well, I don't know. I would be okay with that haha! Edit: Will the Machine still be able to prevent major terrorist attacks? If it sends THOSE numbers to Reese and Finch, that could get pretty exciting!

-That scene with Grace... Man, that made me sad. Michael Emerson is just brilliant. So is Ramin Djawadi by the way. I believe that was the first time we heard a piano on the show's soundtrack!

-''I'll seal the room.'' lol. Oh, and ''Fair enough'' are the best last words ever.

-Very strange that Fusco was not in the final two episodes, especially since the last episode he did appear in was so focused on him. I'm glad he made it past this season though haha!

-Three phone calls to three different parties. Very, very interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Harold let Root live, because he felt so guilty about what happened to Ingram. I think Finch really does care about saving peoples lives and even often tries to enforce Reese not kill unless necessary, but I do agree the idea of "anyone" deciding who lives and dies, who's important and who isn't is a VERY scary prospect, because it still relies on a perception or reality in terms of one's beliefs and/or "desired outcome"...

I feel for Root, even if she's a threat. Was glad she wasn't killed off, because Amy Acker has been a delight to watch!

  34. That sounds like a good theory and makes sense, I like the idea of The Machine having its own team to save people, instead of a team using The Machine.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Awesome.

Never expected the AI-Machine stuff to go SO far. I only hoped so, but now it's beyond my imagination. Not only did it move itself but also now it decides who it wants to contact. It's become a true character now. It's intelligent and it makes decisions. Almost like a human being. And it's morality is to be questioned after the call to Root. WOW.

Also great part from Finch. He tricked everyone, Reese included. But he had to, because 1) he wasn't sure if he succeeded and the Machine managed to move itself, 2) he knew that he has to take so huge precautions because the Gov is powerful as well. And the face expression of Special Counsel when he entered the hall... Priceless.

Ma'am is rather someone new. Zoe? Please, it's impossible... People want to find something, where there is nothing to be found...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Brilliant, as usual. Though last weeks was a bit better. Couple of complaints:

I'm not sold on Root's suddenly turning out to be a good-guy. I actually preferred it when she was a relatively anonymous but formiddable foe, but the actress is hot, so I shouldn't complain too much :P

Lack of Fusco in this episode sums up his season really, but at least it means he will probably be back in S3.

I must admit, I had been gearing up to write a third complain about how Finch suddenly became a useless tag-along, and had nothing useful to add to the situation... until it turned out that he had a cunning plan right from the get-go. Nice twist!

I want to know what is going to happen with the Machine next season. I think it is going to help Root get out of hospital, maybe she will still turn out to be a baddy after all, and have the Machine on her side... that would be bit harsh, hehe

  40. I would of considered it too, if Carrie Preston wasn't on True Blood...

It would be nice to see her play a villain once!XD But I get the impression that her character is genuine and not stereotypically, 'high society'. (But I have to admit, it would be a good shock!)

The only reason I thought of Zoe was because I think she already fits the part, but depending on what this article said, it may be a brand new character.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well I wouldn't say there's nothing to be found, but rather if it is not Zoe, then her character only mildly plays to stringing the more recant Grecian-Titan-God themes together, as opposed to majorly.

Zoe is of Greek origin (a name in the Bible) and means "Life" (sometimes "life eternal") and Morgan means: "All Encompassing Light" (*Think: Northern Lights/ Morgan is German for "Morning"). Additionally if there has been any character introduced that fits the part it is her. Her taste would equivocate the tastes of what we could see of this character in the car (high society - elegant expensive leisure car and feminine-detailed lighter-color gloves) and there is a shady story behind her father. In addition her occupation has a label and stigma that is often perceived as "criminal". ("Fixer" See definition #2:http://www.thefreedictionary.com/fixer). IMO she would be a great antagonist...Wasn't there an episode where she was on the phone with someone suspicious?

Again I haven't seen or read this "article" that might state it is a new character, but if it not. I think she fits the bill and would be nice twist for Reese in particular.

  43. I haven't had a chance yet to comment on the finale but I really liked it! POI is my favorite show for its good writing and this season was full of excellent story lines!

Enjoyed the cliff hanger ending and glad that the main characters all involved are still alive and will be back for next season! Love the addition of Shaw and even crazy Root this year. One thing I've always realized is POI does an excellent job of giving woman characters decent story lines with important roles. Smart writing keeps me watching and I also appreciated the intro viewer disclosure tptb at the beginning of the show, for sake of the recent bombings.

Also a nice conclusion to Harold and Nathan's flashback story lines. Although it seemed sort of premature that Grace accepted Harold's demise in the bombing but it did make for a neat wrap up of their relationship for the viewers. This all explains so much to why Harold did what he thought was best and how he took over Nathan's work of protecting those numbers.

I plan to have a rewatch of this season since a lot of it was so disjointed with breaks and all. I'm betting it will come together much better with no interruptions! Can't wait for the new season this fall.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It's still very far-fetched for me. If she was so important, she wouldn't care so much about Reese and Finch, and the Secret Service/whatever wouldn't have let her to... for example, live with Reese as his 'wife' in one of this season episodes. We've been analising names of characters many times, looking for some mythological meanings, and as far as I remember, theories like that turned out true only in Lost :)

    The articles about 'Mrs. Penn'
    http://seriable.com/person-of-interest-sarah-shahi-return-spoilers/
    http://tvline.com/2013/03/28/scandal-greys-anatomy-person-interest-spoilers/

Her name didn't appear in the episode, but obviously it must be the same person, because there wasn't any other new female character introduced :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks for the link. :) It does a appear it's new character since they used the word "introduced".

I still hope, even though PT is filming a Pilot that she will have a bigger role down the line. I just think the actress has a lot of gusto and would be nice to see it more used!

I wasn't sure if they were secret service or agents of Decima...we saw so many men guarding the payphones.

    ReplyDelete
  46. What if both? I had this crazy theory, that Mrs. Penn is both Hersh's and Greer's employer. Not only is she in charge of the Northern Lights, but also Decima. I wonder what it would bring :)

  48. For a show that is ultra realistic, it did get a little over the top. But I think it's allowed for a show that gets so much right. And the finale was really good because it was truly game changing. I couldn't imagine any other popular crime procedural on a network that would change something so fundamental about the show's blueprint. The people behind this show have taken a great risk and I am sure it will pay off.

This is a rare occurrence where I saw a finale and I thought to myself, "I have no idea where they are going with this" and meant it as a compliment. Whatever it is, while it will, for the most part, follow the PoI of the week formula, the season long arc next season will be really different.

What this episode also tells me is that they don't expect to go on forever with this show. I think they feel there is a beginning, middle and an end. I am guessing, if they get to have their way, the show might go on for something like 6 seasons and they'll voluntarily end it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The machine was free but not completely. Root and Reese had admin access and the Machine had to do their bidding until their admin status expired insofar as if one of them gave a direct command, the machine had to execute it. But it did not mean that is ALL it had to do. The freeing machine thing started the moment the virus was uploaded. It took the machine months to make that happen.

Reese and Root both getting admin access was sort of a wasted opportunity I thought. I wondered throughout the episode what would happen if they gave the machine contradicting commands. It would be a deadlock. What was it's algorithm to resolve it? FIFO? LIFO? Something else? Or when two contradicting commands came in from different admins, the sentient part of the machine would make the call?

    ReplyDelete
  50. If Finch really cares about saving people, then he would not leave the non-character that happened to be in the empty space, the one where Shaw said "turn and a bullet for you". This is what I don't understand about this show.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would agree with you the lines about "priority" and moral ethics are blurred, but IMO that is actually the point of the show, to show us how hard it is and/or the problem with having an ethical set of principals is, because no one person can be for "everyone" all the time...We have to discriminate and make decisions in order to survive (survival of the fittest), but the point of these kinds of explorations, which in humanity still continues to argue about and struggle with, is which philosophy is truly more 'Jeremy Bentham: "good" for the MOST people?? -And again the problem lies in one's definition of "good" and what how we treat people we deem "not good". (aka criminal justice).

So I would agree that Finch has moments that are deplorable, but his actions are often less deplorable than many of the other characters, putting his intentions more on 'the good' side of the spectrum...But I think if your expecting the question of what good and evil to be full answered, it won't be, but I do think Finch is continuing to explore and "trying" to work the best he can against some his regrettable past actions. It may come to head, if the machine starts to have it's own opinion about 'right and wrong', 'good and bad'...

    ReplyDelete
  52. But he's literally in the same room!! It wouldn't take extra energy if they just say "come stranger, come with us" and he could walk with them without any assistance (like Root that Finch needed to help walk with). I get it, he is an accessory to the later "fair enough" scene but still, it kinda bothered me.

I think this scene is a flawed scene, not some elaborate agenda to make us question and think about whether Finch is deplorable or not. This is what happens when you try to be so self-righteous in your writing.

    ReplyDelete
  53. VERY cool episode! It's the best kind of season finale when they manage to entertain throughout; the characters are all intriguing, complex, and multilayered; and it completely changes the show's landscape for next season, but in a good way. I loved it. I am so looking forward to next season! (This is a very belated post, b/c I just finished catching up with all of this season's episodes. And I must say, this was a stellar season!) POI is definitely one of my favorite shows on tv right now!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Words cannot describe how awesome this show is. Best show on TV by far!!! So many twists and turns. When I was watching the finale, I thought geez it must be almost over and I looked at the clock and only 15mins had gone. Thats how awesome this ep was.

Everyone has pretty much covered my thoughts, but I will just add a few personal thoughts.

I have really liked Root's character, but wanted so much for Shaw to finish her off. Finch got the upper hand in the end, but in a lot of ways she is his equal and I don't like that.

Please can we have more Elias next season. 23 eps with him in it and I wouldn't complain lol. He is my favourite baddie.

I have loved the transformation of Fusco. I hope he gets to put a bullet in Simmons. Will be interesting to see where they head with Carter now.

I won't complain if we see more of Leon, Shaw and Bear also lol

    Is it September yet????????
