  1. I can swear I say both of Nikolaj's hands during the climb.

  2. A bear. A bear!

    - I enjoyed Jon and Ygritte discussing their cultures. Jon sounded like Jon and Ygritte sounded like Ygritte and we even got a long overdue and underused "You know nothing Jon Snow!"

    - Then we got a jovial and bawdy Tormund! How you missed Giantsbane! For the first time beyond the Wall reminded me of the books! Thank you GRRM!

    - Did not enjoy the Ribb and Talisa scene, but I have yet to enjoy one honestly! XD

    - I enjoyed the scene between Margaery and Sansa. It truly illustrated how immature Sansa is compared to Margaery. Sansa can take lessons on how to play the game from those Tyrell women!!

    - I love how "Your Grace" from Tywin directly at Joffrey is dripping with sarcasm! HE knows how worthless Joff truly is and, while he does not antagonize Joffrey like Tyrion does, he reminds him that he is King by happenstance and not because he earned it.

"Whenever necessary" is Tywin's way of saying "Know your role Jughead You know nothing,"

    - Dany's scene was nothing special. Nice set up for the next episodes with some fun dragon VFX. When are they actually going to tell the viewers the names of the 3 dragons anyway? They are her children, would we normally wait to hear the names of a queen's children? No.

    - Not sure what to think of the Mel & Gendry scene yet. Not bad, but it did not move me I guess.

    - Arya's escape was onnly OK for me too. I liekd the dialog, but it felt rushed and slow at the same time if that makes sesne. XD

My favorite bit of the episode was Jaime once again. NCW deserves to be nominated for Best supporting Actor this season! Between his farewell to Brienne, his determination to go back for her and jumping into the pit he stole the show tonight. Brienne calling him "Ser Jaime" instead of the Kingslayer for the first time really sold it too!

I really liked how they dealt with the bear pit.
The pacing and choreography was changed from the books, but letting Little Bart the bear live appeased all the PETA people I'm sure! XD

I thought the actual Brienne vs the bear fight was VERY well done unlike some animal fight scenes that feel overly choreographed. Kudos to the editing department!

    Theon scene... yaaawn.
My gut tells me that the scene was not written by GRRM and added into the episode. IT did not feel liek the rest of the episode to me.

Other than the Theon scene the only real complaint I have for the episode was not having Jaime dream of Brienne and that being his reason for returning to Harrenhal for her! The fact that Jaime has a dragon dream will be important later and foreshadowing now would have been a good thing IMO.

This episode felt more like the books in tone to me than many of the episodes, but it was a table setter episode for the final 3 episodes and little more. Maybe equal to last week, but one of the worst of the season I think. Still better than 75% of the stuff on TV though! XD

  3. I saw his wrapped stump a couple times and not a proper hand personally, but I did not rewind or pause to check either....

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah, I was very disappointed we didn't get the "Why did you come back?"/"I dreamed of you" moment with Brienne and Jaime.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Almost positive I saw it in one of the flashes for a second too. No biggie but you would think they would have seen it in editing... maybe we are wrong - I'll have to look again.

    ReplyDelete
  6. They are doing a spectacular job with enough "skin" for entertainment/sexiness without pushing it in your face. Every scene is just the right length... well, every scene except the Little Finger scene in S1 but it was still nothing to complain about an gave viewers pretty good insight into his head/thinking. I could not imagine a show like this without explicit sex sprinkled in.

    ReplyDelete
  7. During my first watch I thought I saw it once, but on second watch I noticed his arms were crossed. Another time his hand was over his lump as he held on.... Not sure, but I will probably freeze frame and frame advance tomorrow to double check.

It would be a very silly mistake since his hand should be wrapped in every scene when the prosthetic lump is not one. In fact I think many of the scenes the lump is on and then wrapped in addition!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Some of the best episode of the series have had no sex or nudity so I'm not sure I agree with you. I do agree that a series like this does need sex and violence to accurately depict the world though. I'm just not sure it needs "skin" scenes exactly.....

In this episode it was Robb and Talisa, two characters I like less on the show than in the books. The other "skin" scene would be Theon who has been grating on my nerves all season. The 2 women were beautiful, but the dialog was TERRIBLE! I bet I will not watch that scene ever again and will fast forward through it each time I re-watch the episode.

I sincerely wonder if D&D wrote that scene and not GRRM himself. I know a number of scenes he wrote were moved out of his episode and other scenes he did not write were moved in. That's why the episode title changed from 'Autumn Rains' to 'Chains' to 'Bear and the Maiden Fair'.

The best part of that scene for me was finally knowing what roles Charlotte Hope as Myranda and Stephanie Blacker as Violet would have in the series. I had been wondering what their roles were since this time last year almost! XD

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'm pretty sure I did too (well either him or the stunt double's....)

    ReplyDelete
  10. That line and after Jaime rescues Brienne when he asks her, "You are still a maiden aren't you? I only rescue maidens." XD

    ReplyDelete
  11. It is like you're in my head right now, it's a little freaky....

    ReplyDelete
  12. I guess the bear pit scene was moved from Episode 3.08 to this episode. that explains why it lacked something to me. The dialog jsut did not feel right and it felt too Hollywood and not GRRM-like.

I wonder if the Theon scene was moved into the episode too?
Also what scene was removed to make room for the Bear pit scene? Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oohh scary!
I don't like being in my own head, much less in someone else's! XD

    ReplyDelete
  14. I absolutely loved the fact that they played the Rains of Castamere at the very end of the ep. A forebonding? :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Margaery was right in two points. First, Tyrion always treated Sansa with kindness and respect and he will still treat her like that after they are married. Second, he's well experienced in bed and knows what he's doing. Better than to have an amateur for her first time. Especially a sadist like Joffrey.
Loved Danny. And the dragons. She surely learned how to put up a good show. I like what she's doing. Freeing slaves is a good cause. Maybe some will follow her and serve her and I think that is, what she's hoping for. People like that will be loyal to her till the end. Unlike slaves or paid soldiers. What reminds me on the battle of Blackwater. Some soldiers were trying to steal horses and run
away before the battle started. They had no loyalty. But freed slaves will always be loyal to the person that gave them their freedom.
Gendry knows that Robert was his father. Good. He just can't use this knowledge (as in becoming king). He can't prove it.
They castrated Theon? Now even I feel sorry for him. Just a bit.
Jamie again saved Brienne. I'm impressed. Not only with the promise of payment, like in the woods. He risked his life for her. He's taking her with him. I hope Cersei won't be jealous. Hmm. Could there be some romance between them?
Questions to all those who read the books. Will Sansa and Tyrion getting married? Will there be more between Jamie and Brienne than companionship?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tyrell women are great. Their males seems to be of no use.
Yeah, Joffrey made a mistake by challenging Tywin. Can't wait to see more of it.
I too wonder what will happen with Arya now that she is in his hands.
Agree. The Jamie and Brienne scenes were all great. You think there is a romance coming?
Yeah, poor bear! I hate the torture of animals. I know it was just a show. But still. Just thinking of it …
Wait. In the books Jamie dreams of Brienne and dragons? What else?!?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I liked the episode, I really felt like the dialogue was better than usual (except the Theon scene), but maybe that's just because I knew GRRM wrote this... It wasn't amazing though, a lot of setting up, but a lot of nice CGI and the Bear scene was very good.

    ReplyDelete
  18. In the books Jaime has a dream where he sees some events from the past, some surreal events that could be the future, and dreams of Brienne facing her doom. A major theme of the dream deals with honor and protecting others honor.

Then he wakes up and tells Steelshanks (the Bolton man in charge of their party) that he needs to go back to Harrenhal.

I said "dragon dream" because the Targaryen's often had prophetical dreams similar to what Jaime had that were called dragon dreams. Similar to the Green Dreams that Bran has.Although in the books Jaime was sleeping on a Weirwood tree stump. One of those trees with faces that the Northerners use in the worship of the gods. So it is possible the dream came from the tree too some think.

    ReplyDelete
  19. In the books Jaime and Brienne will be splitting up soon after they return to Kings Landing. However they will stay in each other's minds and do meet again later.

You will find out next episode whether or not Sansa and Tyrion get married, so not sure you want to know so close to finding out....

    ReplyDelete
  20. Those trees are spooky. But if they represent the gods it would make sense.
Danny did dream that she takes the eggs into the fire and they would hatch, if I remember correctly. It's what she's telling others.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Too bad. I kinda hopped Jamie and Brienne would become more than companions. I was beginning to like them together. On the other side, wasn't he always proud that he never cheated on his sister?
Yes, tell me. I don't mind knowing beforehand. I watched all Twilight movies in the cinema, although I read the books at least twice before the movie. Same for Harry Potter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Correct.

In the books Dany has prophetical dreams of her own more often, Bran has then consistently, Arya has them, Jon has them too.

The dreams establish a strong connection between the Starks to the First Men and the Children of the Forest. The show has really down-played that connection with the Stark children. In the books each of their Direwolves is almost like a part of them (they are connected to them on some level even if separated), and a part of their connection to something bigger as well.

Prophecy is a very large part of the books, but it does not translate to TV very well. A lot of the dreams are vague with symbolism, but if they were made visual those symbols would become fairly obvious and it would be more like spoilery than foreshadowing. So I understand why they do not use the prophecies very much.

In the books they do get married yes. Although one of the 5 impending weddings will NOT happen if they go according to the books.

  24. Refresh the above spoiler comment. I edited it to include the couple not getting married.

  25. In the books Jon and Bran are closest to their wolves to so that did not change. Bran is warging into his without trying at first in his dreams, then out of curiosity and then trying to learn his capabilities and limits. So we see a lot more of his warg "dreams" while he is in Summer.

Jon is almost as connected but does not actively try to warg into Ghost so much. He has more intuitions and feels what Ghost does, but Orell knows he is a warg as soon as he meets him.

Arya is even more limited since she dismisses Nymeria earlier on in her story, but she has a couple of very important prophetical type dreams as if she is seeing Nymeria's actions or is inside Nymeria.

Robb is also VERY connected to Grey Wind in the books. The wolf is always at his side growling at untrustworthy people or people who may not be loyal to Robb etc.

It adds a lot of context and foreshadowing to the story in the books, but is too complicated to do without the internal dialog of the books.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah, I was wondering if Aryas wolf comes back. She sent it away in S1 after the attack on Joffrey but it would be time they are reunited. Will they be?
One of the reasons I like books more is, that you know what people think or feel. On shows you can only guess.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The books have not shown whether or not Arya and Nymeria will be reunited . Some people think they will be and others do not... Like much of the series there are very vague hints in both direction...

I think we will see the Direwolf again in the books (maybe in the series), but not sure Arya will see her in person...

    *shrug*

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah think the dream being dismissed was a bit of a mistake. But then again the "why did you save me moment" one cold say happened three episodes ago. He didn't answer her then so it might be a nice call back for later, OR they might use him dreaming of her in a future episode/season, in a different situation but similar context. They've done stuff like that before.
However I think I'll agree with Darque in that I feel I needed some of the book dialogue in there. The "you are still a maiden" absolutely. But to me the one that was glaringly missing was the "go get her" before he jumped in.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've been looking forward to this whole sequence since I read SOS. When I saw GRRM had written the episode, I thought, "Well, hell, he's going to kill it." But, yeah, like you both mentioned, several of the great lines and bits (the dream) were missing from it. The actors kill it with their characters, so it was still a good scene, but still.

Also, I do hate they've apparently eliminated Jaime's nickname for Brienne -
"wench". They can do these horrible things to Ros and every other woman
on the show, but they can't let Jaime call Brienne "wench"? Which
eventually becomes the "as you wish" of the GOT-world? LAME.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Strangely enough I really loved everything at the wall this time. I love Jon in the books and this episode felt more right for him. Ygritte is great too and their moments were much like the books.
Jaime as a hero was awesome ofcourse. As some of you mentioned, it did feel a little like Hollywood, but it didn´t bother me. I think Nikolaj C-W is doing such a good job transforming Jaime into a different person and I choose to just enjoy that part. The Jaime / Brienne arc is as great as I imagened it.
Am I the only one that get´s NOTHING out of Theons story? Didn´t care for him (and the other ironborns) in the books and the show isn´t any better. I am happy that I read the books and know that there is a point to all of it.
Margaery was awesome as always and I also really enjoyed Joffrey and Tywins scene. I just love hating Joffrey. He is one of the characters I enjoy more on TV than in the books.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Agreed on all counts.

There is a large bookreader segment that thinks that Theon NEEDS to be shown tortured repeatedly so we can 1) tell how evil "Boy" is so when his identity is revealed it pays off big and 2) Theons's devolution into Reek must be shown for non-readers to make sense of him being a shell of the man he was a season or two later in the series.

Personally I think both points are completely wrong.

    Re: Point 1
Ramsay Snow is not the ultimate villain of the series and in fact he just not that important. Boy being revealed as Ramsay will not pay off to non-readers much no matter how many scenes they see. Many will not recall who Roose Bolton is to begin with and if they do, I'm not sure many will connect Ramsay and Roose and get that "OMG WTF" moment in any way.

    Re: Point 2
The concept of a man being captured, held and tortured for months degrading into a shell of his former self and turning into whatever his captor imprints on him is a VERY EASY concept to understand! Theon could not be seen for an entire season (or more) and with one scene of exposition everyone would understand. To understand the level of abuse one or two scenes more would have sufficed it the scenes showed the progression of the physical and mental abuse (scars lack of fingers, inability to move or walk, incoherent babbling, obvious programmed mind control etc).

Viewers did not see Barristan Selmy for a year and his return was not confusing. If handled properly a character can be off-screen for an extended time and return without losing the audience easily enough..

As it stands now, Theon's arc has been wasted time showing the same thing over and over actually confusing the viewers. The very thing some think the scenes are needed to AVOID doing! Will the end game pay off ina way that is worth the time? Very likely not IMO.
    Oh the irony! XD

    / End Rant

I agree on Joffrey so much!
In the books I hated him, but on the series I love to hate him! Gleeson has done wonders!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm still trying to figure out why Ramsay's so important to the story in the books. Maybe that's something that'll be revealed in The Winds of Winter or book 7. The producers of GOT do know the ending of the story, so perhaps showing all of this has some greater reveal to it later on down the line. In the books, the bits of torture we get are all in Theon's recollection of how he came to be "Reek". TBH, I do find witnessing SOME of the torture to be more impactful than Theon simply remembering as he thinks about the shit he's currently in. Did I need to see that bondage sex porn three way? No, not really, but the last scene, where he played the Guessing Game? That was excellent in showing how twisted the guy can be. And that's barely scratching his surface. Joffrey has nothing on him.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yep, I liked the guessing game scene. That was the best of the Theon scenes this year IMO.

All of the scenes have been very good honestly (maybe not the most recent), but to me they are now repetitive and too long.

My gut tells me because Alfie does such a brilliant job portraying the role D&D wanted to write more scenes for Theon. I bet even they did not think they NEEDED this many Theon scenes.

It's like the Tywin Arya scenes last year, or the Ros scenes, or even the Joffrey is a sadist and Littlefinger is manipulative scenes the last 3 years were for them. They enjoyed how the scenes turned out and wanted to write more similar scenes to show off the actors. They did not really consider (or care) how it would play in the series overall.

And I loved the Tywin/ Arya scenes, many of the Ros scenes, all of the Joffrey scenes and some of the Littlefinger scenes.... I just do not think we needed all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree, two scenes of Theon being tortured would be enough to understand how he becomes Reek. I´m guessing that since they can´t give us the surprice of who Reek is, they want to surprice us with Ramsay Snow instead. But it makes no sence. Like you said above, Ramsay is not really that importend. I´m hoping for a few episodes without Theon.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I´m also guessing they are trying to give Alfie some more scenes, so they can hold on to him. Joffrey, Margaery, Littlefinger, and Tywin also seems to get a bit more scenes, probably because they are so well liked by the audience.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I miss all the things you mention above. I really really miss Ghost. I can´t believe that we have only seen him once this season. He is such a HUGE part of the books. Summer and Grey Wind too ofcourse.
Every single scene we see Dany in, she has her dragons beside her. I think it is a shame that they don´t use the wolves more aswell.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think I read elsewhere that we have one more episode where Theon make an appearance although I'm not sure how many scenes....

    ReplyDelete
  38. IT's true!
The wolves are every bit as much of the story as Dany's dragons...

For me there has been too much of Dany's Dragons honestly. My favorite part of her arc is the dreams and the prophecies.

Hopefully it will all change when she gets to Meereen. I liked the more political aspects of that arc. Less bad-assery and more learning to rule. My favorite Dany chapters.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes, I am getting a bit much of the dragons aswell. I would prefer to see a direwolf instead now and then.
I like Dany´s dreams too and her political story, but I am not that interested in Dany, the other arcs are much more interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  40. let´s hope for a short one.... :-) The scenes have been way to long and have taken time from other importend arcs.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yep, she has always been my third least favorite arc behind Bran and Theon.

Although this year is much better than last year in the series.
Also Theon in the TV series was more interesting than the books.... until this year.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yes, Theon is very well portrayed by Alfie, and that makes his story in the series slightly more interesting than in the books.

I enjoyed Brans story so far. I like the idea about the wargs, his dreams and where his story is headed. Having said that, he is not one of my favorites, but maybe in the middle if there was a list.

Dany and all of the ironborn is at the bottom of my list. Her story seems to dragged out. I liked her in book 1/ season1, and in the books it just goes down hill from there. In the series she is doing a tiny bit better this season, so I´m hoping for that to continue.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I was reeeeeally over Dany's story in the later books. She just kind of lost her way and screwed off beyond Westeros. I was like, "Weren't you trying to take back your throne or something? Really, what are you doing here?" Then the stuff with Jorah ... that's when I was done with her. That said, I do like the character more on the show. But I dread getting into her SL next season and beyond. Is it gonna be just as rage-y on the show, too?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I know, the stuff with Jorah just made her ten times worse than she already was. I just can´t look forward to her story, but I am glad when I watch the show and is positively surprised by her story.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am one of the few that actually PREFERRED the Meereen chapters to her conquest arc, by far!

I loved the political aspect of it (frankly the politics of Essos/ Westeros is my favorite part of the books), her actually maturing (or at least trying to) for the first time in the series. I liked the appearance of Quentyn's group and the Sons of the Harpy sub-plot...

Pretty much all of it except Daario. Some of the bits with him got old fast. That was the one area she was still not seeing the big picture IMO. That will be different on the series though since they sexed Daario up instead of making him a buffoon like in the books.

I'm really looking forward to the Meereen arc in the TV show! I think it will play much, MUCH better on TV since there will not be as much repetition once it is adapted.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Been MIA, but just stopping by to say "Hi!" and I enjoyed the episode!

Tywin and Joffrey scene was a real delight and it was in that scene where I could kind of see the Tywin in Joffery (physically/genetically). It was the first time Joffrey was "smart" about what he should be concerned about and interesting that he didn't cross a line in irritating Grandad! -I also liked how "stairs" were used in the scene (playing to 'the climb is all there is'??)

Obviously Jaimi and Brienne's Bear scenes were also fantastic. I thought that was a nice CGI Bear! -And it almost seems that Brienne parallels Tyrion with her scars near her face!

Enough with Theon torture! Although I see this body-part-chopping is becoming increasingly more thematic :O

I also thought Osha's lines acting were really GOOD. Her back story reminds me of Dany's and Dany's visions from The House of the Undying.

Speaking of Dany, she's being exceptionally fierce in freeing slaves! Oh the madness! ;)

I got a kick out of Ygritt too, mocking culture on the other side of the wall, but ultimately a mocker in general! She''l punch 'em in the eye for tearing her beautiful silk dress! XD

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yes, you must be one of the few. I never really look forward to Danys arcs on the show, but Meereen would be on the absolute botton. (I think I actually prefer the iron islands).

I like the politics in the books aswell. But I have always found the politics of Westeros vs North of the wall, the wildlings interesting. I find the wildlings very interesting people. Sadly there is not enough time on the show to get more in to their philosophies.
