Depends on potential. If story intrigues me or there are characters that I like I'll give 5 or 6 episodes. If i don't like the characters I'll give it two episodes because, in a lot of cases the pilot isn't a good representation of what the show will be and there's so much time between when the show is picked up and when the season starts that it's usually worth it to me to check out the 2nd episode to see if it got better during that time.
If there's absolutely nothing I like about the Pilot, I usually give up after that. If there's at least one thing I like, however tiny it may be, I watch up until episode 3. If I don't have the urge to fastforward through those I give it more. So it's usually ast least 3 for me :)
That really depends on how bad (or good :p) it is! When I'm not interested in watching a show at all, I don't watch the Pilot either. When that first episode is disappointing, I just hope it gets better, and if it doesn't I stop watching.
Then most of the time I keep track of how good it is by going through the reviews. ;)
If the show is brand new and I have no recommendations, it all depends on the pilot. If it's good, I'll watch the next episode, and possibly 3 or 4 more. If it's bad, I give up. If I have a recommendation, however, I might be able to stick with it for up to 5 episodes, even if nothing in the pilot interests me.
Only 3 shows have hooked me with the pilot, Supernatural, Veronica Mars and Roswell, so if I like some of the actors and the story is interesting I may stick around for 5 eps. If the pilot sucks big time I may not even finish it. If David Nutter directs the pilot I have always at least gotten thru that one. ;)
4 or 5 normally. Sometimes it is enough to watch the pilot, like AHS for me. I didn´t like it at all and never watched another minute. Once Upon a Time I watched the first 9 episodes I think. It was so popular and I kept looking for something to like. But for most shows 4 or 5 episodes.
depends on the pilot for me. usually if the show is intriguing I continue watching. but then there are shows like vegas and nashville where I've watched to a point and then just stopped, in favour of other shows like the americans, mr and mrs murder and orphan black.
Usually as many as it takes before it starts to annoy me. It's the same reasoning I use when deciding whether or not to give up on a show. The reason I only made it ep 20 of Nikita is the same reason I gave up on Lie to Me in the middle of s3.
Other - It really does depend on the show, sometimes 15 minutes is enough, other times it can take about 10 or more episodes to decide. Sometimes even a whole series and then I give up.
I try to give shows a 4 episode shot, so they can establish themselves. But often the pilot lets me know that it's just not going to be my thing and I bail then.
Really depends. This year I gave Mob Doctor half an episode, The Following got 4 or 5, Last Resort got 2, etc. Some got a season, some got minutes, some got somewhere in between.
Three is my max, but if it's something I really dislike from the beginning, the show will be lucky if it goes past one. I went to two with Vampire Diaries. For me it was Vampire takeoff on the Winchester boys. Little brother wanting normal and in school. Big brother is the bad guys but has all this angst and is really the good guy. The classic car. Fighting all the bad guys. It really irritated me.
I thought of SPN also, but TVD did not get interesting for me until Elena found out they were vamps, ep 5 or 6, but now it is going downhill for me. They have to many characters, that I really don't care about any of them. And talk about canon going out the window..two 150 year old vamps can not control a baby vamp..ugh.
...depends,what is the show. Some times only the pilot already said that will be amazing (POI and Six Feet Under). Others don't convince me, even in the pilot.
another don't have a nice pilot, but with some adjustments in the season, fixes the bad things.
If it annoys me, but looks like it has potential I'll give it 4 episodes to see if they can find their feet (Beauty and the Beast). If it really bugs me, but there is a ton of buzz and I wonder if I've been too hasty in hating a pilot, I'll give it a second episode to see if the network feedback fixed anything (Last Resort). If I'm skeptical about a premise and I dislike the pilot, I'm done after that (Red Widow).
Three, you can't really judge a show by its pilot I think, there's a lot of ground to cover, same with the second episode. If it hasn't hooked me by the third, I may not even finish it but, I usually give it three attempts, unless the pilot is dreadful, then I won't watch any further. I can honestly say, the only show that has hooked me from the pilot is The West Wing.
I don't watch any new shows--only record them until I know they have been picked up for a second season. Then I usually watch 2-3 episodes to decide if I like it.
1 or 2, depending on how good or bad the pilot is.
I don't normally quit shows once I get started. I can usually tell if I'm going to like a show before I even see an episode. I know what I like.
There are some shows I start watching later in the game and realize I like it, but I think there has been only 2 times I started watching shows and ended up not liking them.
If a pilot is terrible and unpromising, I might read reviews for future episodes. If a pilot is terrible but promising, I'll watch 1 more and read future reviews. If a pilot is mediocre, I'll watch 1-2 more and then re-evaluate. If a pilot is good, I'll watch a few episodes. If it's still promising after 4 then I'll probably watch until mid-season. if it's not promising or good by mid-season, then I'll drop it.
It depends on many factors for me. Some shows, I only start watching because of the cast or because it was recommended to me, in which case the pilot and then the next episode are enough to decide (I like watching episode 2, as it usually gives a better feel for what the show is like on a weekly basis). However, shows I start watching out of interest, I might give up to the midseason to decide, in order to see if the show improves.
I typically give a show 3 episodes. Sometimes it gets more if there is an actor or crew member I want to support. For instance, I knew I was going to be giving Revolution a lot more leeway than most new shows because Kripke was running it and I trust in him. Last year, I watched Secret Circle all the way through Guy Bee's directorial episode to support him and I went as far as the potential student-teacher love affair on Ringer for SMG before dropping it. Of course if the pilot is completely unwatchable I sometimes don't make it to 3 (This year that includes Mob Doctor, Partners, Animal Practice, and Emily Owens.)
Count me on the Veronica Mars Movie bandwagon too. I think people were sick of me reminding them that they were almost out of time to support it. I love how kickstarter has shown that fans sometimes do have the power if they are sufficiently motivated to lay don actual cash for something.
For many of the shows that I've gotten hooked on, you just don't have a good idea of what an episode is like week-to-week if you don't give it at least 5 or 6. Many shows evolve very quickly over the first few episodes as the writers and actors get used to their characters and find their groove. A few years ago I put the number at 6 (i.e. if you didn't watch through episode 6, you can't say you gave a show a chance), which was largely influenced by House and Chuck, as well as The Office and The Big Bang Theory. After a brief glance a the two dozen shows I've watched since then, I stand by the 6 episode rule.
it is not a certain thing... Beauty and the beast i gave up on the pilot, grey's anatomy i stoped watching along the way on season 8. Yeah, not a certain thing...
Buffy for me was not that great until season 2. I started out with Angel because I liked David in Bones, fell in love with Spike, so had to watch Buffy.
With your talk of quitting SPN, how am I going to get my polls fix?? You keep me entertained in the boring time of year.
I plan on going out with a bang this summer. We are having our quotes contest, writer polls, and whatever is left on the poll to do list. We should have daily polls/articles throughout the hiatus, except during the Best Show contest of course. I have already cleared it with Andy. In addition, Lilith and I are doing seasons 1-3 podcasts so we get a chance to talk about how much we love the show instead of dwelling on the drek of this season. We're actually recording episodes 1.11 and 1.12 this weekend, some of my favorites in the series. We'll also being doing live tweets and Google hangouts this summer if you are interested Then if the polls end in time, we will finally get to those ranking articles where we can really discuss. This summer is going to be packed with Supernatural and I hope a great time all around. I have a lot to get done before I can leave SPN.
7 episodes in is way too much for me. I'm very impatient. However, I am glad it had a decent amount episodes air so fans like you could enjoy it. Zero Hour only got 3 episodes, which really sucked for me.
I try to give it at least three episodes, but some shows I just can't stick out. You know something's wrong if you turn off the pilot halfway through, so in that case I wouldn't watch again... but 3 episodes is usually my cutoff.
3 is the usual trial period for me, unless I really love/hate the pilot. If I'm not taken with the pilot but like the cast/premise/potential, it's usually 3 eps. I have gone for more - I gave Revolution 6 eps before giving it up...
Sounds like a fun summer, but will still hate to see you go. I don't comment about other shows very often, but will look for you.
I stopped watching Bones because I just could not stand her and the stupid comments she kept coming up with..I was like please grow up and get a clue. lol Feel sorry for the kid.
We'll have to start a new tradition of commenting excessively about some new show and hope others join us too. I would love to see another CW show become huge on Spoiler. Now if only the CW debuts a new show that inspires as much passion as Supernatural (and Beauty and the Beast these days) does.
I dumped Bones because I was years over the will they/won't they before they finally became will they. My favorite characters were always Zach (still sad about him), Hodgins, and Angela anyway. The romance thing left me cold.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteSame here.
ReplyDeleteFor me, either I don't get through the pilot or I stick with the whole show. Once I'm in I get hooked.
ReplyDeleteIf a story can't really pick up or interest me in 3 episodes, what's the point of watching any further?
ReplyDeleteUsually two or three but if it's really bad I often to drop it after watching the pilot.

ReplyDeleteUsually three episodes. If by that time there's NOTHING to grab me then there's a fair chance there won't ever be.

ReplyDeletesame here
ReplyDeleteI usually watch the whole fall arc.
ReplyDeleteSimple as that.
ReplyDeletei try 3, but sometimes its obvious after 1
ReplyDeletedepends on the pilot, then an episode by episode basis. usually 4 or 5...

ReplyDeleteUsually five. I tend to watch the first 13 eps before making a final judgement.
ReplyDeleteUsually I'll stick with it for a season. Sometimes the real quality only comes with time.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch any new shows--only record them until I know they have been picked up for a second season. Then I usually watch 2-3 episodes to decide if I like it.
ReplyDeleteAre you excited about the Veronica Mars movie???
ReplyDeleteBeyond thrilled. I was on that kickstarter so fast.... 2014 can't come fast enough.

ReplyDeleteUnless, the pilot stinks, I'll give the show a total of 5 shows-unless the network keeps changing the schedule & I can't find it.
ReplyDeleteit is not a certain thing... Beauty and the beast i gave up on the pilot, grey's anatomy i stoped watching along the way on season 8. Yeah, not a certain thing...
ReplyDeleteAs long I find nothing horrible about the pilot. I will stay until cancelled.
ReplyDeleteThat is too bad Mob Doctor by episode 7 it was getting good! and it got better to the ending.

What got me, when they finally did, we did not see any of it, and then it was oh BTW I with child. lol Yes to Zach, Hodgins & Angela.
ReplyDeleteIt was rather rushed. I'm not sure any show has gone from willthey/won't they to we're having a kid together in so few episodes. Very surreal.
ReplyDelete
