The Vampire Diaries - Interview with Julie Plec

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Let’s talk about prom!
Julie Plec: Prom is coming!

And they have some lovely dresses, too. What can you tease about the shenanigans that will be going down on prom night for Elena and the Salvatore brothers?
JP: It’s interesting, because on one hand, I think anyone — when you’re doing a high school series — is going to be waiting for that senior prom episode as our characters head towards graduation and wonder who is going to go with who, and how romantic will it be, and with Elena and this love triangle, probably before this season, they thought, “Who will she be with? Who will be her boyfriend at the time?”

Now, she’s in a situation where she doesn’t give a crap, so to speak, about anybody or anything, so it’s actually the brothers who show up — one on each arm — as their way of saying, well, look, if you don’t care about us, we’re going to make you care about something. So they use the prom experience and the night that’s supposed to be so wonderful for her and her friends to try and literally inject some emotion into her. And she doesn’t like that very much. So she gets very feisty.

And funnily enough, as is wont to happen at our school dances, something goes wrong and…in this particular dance, the perpetrator is Elena.

I imagine that won’t go over well with anyone, especially poor Caroline who has been working so hard on prom…
JP: Caroline has waited for this night her whole life — probably only second to her wedding — as she envisioned her perfect senior prom, and very quickly at the top of the episode, she’s miserable. Tyler’s gone, there’s a mishap with her dress, there are things that happen that frustrate her, she’s on the outs with her best friend, Bonnie’s acting weirdly. I think there’s a line somewhere in the episode where Caroline goes, “This prom sucks.” And she gets a nice moment when all is said and done; she gets to experience the perfect prom moment, but it’s short-lived and definitely will get people talking.

  1. maybe she dances with Klaus

  2. Julie Plec said that doesn't happen but they will share a nice friend moment

  3. - It's nice to see an interviewer ask about Bonnie for a change.
    - More Silas next season!? Please god no. None of the plots for this season should carry on to the next. Wrap it all up, let them graduate, give the show a time jump and a fresh start for season 5.
    - Stop "invigorating" the triangle. END the triangle. Choose a direction and go with it already.
    - The Matt graduation subplot makes a ton of sense. It's the most realistic fallout to all the crazy crap that he and all his friends have been dealing with. It's nice to see a grounded response to all the chaos.
    - Don't bring that "drinking buddy" stuff up with me. That's a real sore spot. One of the most discussed questions of the last summer hiatus was about who would be Damon's new friend / drinking buddy and, in spite of some vague teases and promises, nothing ever happened.

  4. "And she doesn’t like that very much. So she gets very feisty" So she's gonna kill someone to prove her point? I'm gonna start to call her KlausElena. I don't like her like this.
"She envisioned her perfect senior prom" Yeah, probably with her boyfriends. Who left town. And she keeps on flirting with the psycho that chased him away. Am I the only one thinking it's insane?
I hate that JP is so vague. "We'll see some old faces" We know that for months. Details!!! Will they return? Are they ghosts? Or is Silas pretending to be grams, Jer or Alaric? She should go into the politics. No matter how much she talks, she never says anything we don't already know.
Silas in S5? So we get rid of Klaus just to be stuck with Silas? And how many seasons will it take to get rid of him? 3? 4?

  5. Support you absolutely on point 2. They should finish the originals and Silas and give the show a new start for the next season. Hey, here's a thought: how about JP reading the books? The second series with the Kitsune and the Dark Dimension is great. How about it for the next 2 seasons or so?
Well, the triangles got a bit much, no denying that. But I didn't mind it in S3. The story never made
any progress, so the triangles were at least developing something within the characters.
Agree on Matt. Some fans ask what his purpose is on the show. He's there to keep a sense of
normality. To show that life can also be normal, that there are still some normal humans in MF (who are more and more becoming an endangered species).
I was too disappointed about the "drinking buddy". For months JP talked about Damon getting a new drinking buddy but, as you said, it never happened.

Yeah. At this point, switched-off Elena might as well be an honorary Original.

I hate that JP is so vague. "We'll see some old faces" We know that for months. Details!!! Will they return? Are they ghosts? Or is Silas pretending to be grams, Jer or Alaric?
Whether they're the dead trying to pierce the veil and come back to life or they're just another one of Silas' disguises I don't know but I'm holding fast to my conspiracy theory that Lexi is coming all the way back and will be a regular next season.

  7. How original...another high school dance episode. I'm sorry but these kids seem a little old for prom at this point. Her comment about Bonnie's arc "ramping up" is ridiculous, given that we haven't really seen much of Bonnie all season. I guess the ramping up must be happening off screen. I can't believe they're letting this woman produce another TV show.

  8. Lexie returning? That would mean that Silas succeeds and the veil will be destroyed. I wish I could say: Great, we'll get Jeremy and Jenna back. And Alaric and Anna. But unfortunately that would mean that the world will be overrun with vamps and weres.
And what exactly does your conspiracy theory say?

    ReplyDelete
  9. The veil coming down probably wouldn't be permanent. It would probably be down momentarily to let some people back before Bonnie somehow closed it again. We wouldn't be overrun. We'd have a select few welcome returns and probably a handful of unwelcome ones as well to give the show some more villains for next season.

My conspiracy theory is that JP has been laying the groundwork throughout the season to bring Lexi back and make her a regular next season. I also think she may end up eventually throwing another monkeywrench into any Delena progress. It would certainly explain why, in spite of Lexi supposedly being Stefan's BFF, her character has spent the majority of her time with Damon in her flashbacks. The show has also kept Arielle Kebbel around to do those "Vampire Diaries Rehash" videos. Maybe that's not just a coincidence. There's a few solid reasons Lexi returning to the show would make sense:

    - In light of a likely Originals series, TVD will be losing two major characters on top of already losing Jeremy so for the first time in a while the show isn't overcrowded.
    - Her return raises juicy questions and creates drama for many characters, such as:
*Lexi was Stefan's BFF and now he has Caroline. What happens with that dynamic when she returns?
*How will Damon handle his guilt over his past with Lexi this time around?
*How will Lexi react to how much Damon has changed?
*What were the extent of Lexi's feelings for Damon back in NYC, how will that affect both characters moving forward, and how will Elena feel about all of it?
    - They're going to need some new blood (no pun intended) to invigorate the show next season. If it's not going to be a new character, it'll be an old one like Lexi.

    ReplyDelete
  10. So you assume Bonnie can control the veil? I think, once she brings the wall down, it can be undone only with a new spell that creates a new wall. But it's just my theory.
But JP never mentioned something about Lexi returning, did she?
Some of your points make sense. We will need more characters. And a new villain.
How Lexi would react to the new Damon? She would be happy for him. And proud. I don’t' think she's the type to hold grudges, so she wouldn't make a scene because of NY. But she would be jealous of Caroline.

    ReplyDelete
  11. "But JP never mentioned something about Lexi returning, did she?"
That's what makes it a conspiracy theory. :)

"I don’t' think she's the type to hold grudges, so she wouldn't make a scene because of NY."
Remember, it's not just NYC. He murdered her when she returned to Mystic Falls.

"But she would be jealous of Caroline."
Or Stefan goes back to being Lexi's BFF and it's Caroline who feels left out. It works both ways.

    ReplyDelete
  12. No comment on point no.1. It makes sense.
Again, Lexi didn't seemed to be the type that holds grudges. Damon almost killed her in NY and she didn't even mentioned it.
If Stefan would have to choose a BFF I wonder who it would be. He and Caroline are very close. But he knows Lexi for 150 years. But you're right. He would have one BFF
and one friend that would be left out.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "Damon almost killed her in NY and she didn't even mentioned it."
That's because the NYC past wasn't written into the show yet.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Of course, I know. In S1 the brothers also hated each other and tried to kill each other. But in S3 and 4 we see flashbacks, where they tried to get along.

    ReplyDelete
  15. ending the triangle now would be a disaster, the show would lose a flock of Stelena/Delena fans depending on which side she chooses! I think at the end of the entire series one will die and Elena will be forced to be with the other.

    ReplyDelete
  16. "ending the triangle now would be a disaster"

I strongly disagree. Both camps have been complaining about the state of the triangle for quite some time and yet the ratings are always rock steady. No only do I doubt that ending the triangle would result in a significant ratings hit but I also believe it would free up the show to explore different more interesting storylines in its place.
