The Americans - Episode 1.12 - The Oath - Preview

So I had the privilege to preview this weeks episode of “The Americans” called ''The Oath''. The season finale is nearly upon us and that makes this penultimate episode really a set up episode. This doesn't mean it's a bad episode, quite the opposite in fact, he trend of strong episodes continues to what most likely be an amazing season finale!

Two older plot threads come back in this episode, the first is Sanford Prince, who has some really valueable intel on the United States' government ''Star Wars'' programme. The other is Viola, the Weinberger's maid, who is struggling with a guilty conscience after helping Philip and Elizabeth in "The Clock''. Beeman takes more of a backseat in this episode after being heavily featured in the past few episodes, but has a poignant scene with Nina. Martha plays another essential role and there are glimmers of hope for the Elizabeth/Philip relationship!

There will be no major story spoilers in this article, but I will give you some teasers. So stop reading now if you don't want to know anything more!
  • Nina takes the titular oath
  • Another great Elizabeth/Claudia scene
  • Elizabeth and Philip device a bold plan
  • Martha's ready to do anything for Clark
  • Paige and Elizabeth share a touching scene
  • Viola's guilty conscience leads to conclusive evidence for Stan
  • Claudia looks really funny in a wig
  • That last scene!
Hope you enjoyed reading this article and hope you enjoy watching ''The Americans'' at 10 PM EST on FX!

  3. So glad to hear there are glimmers of hope! You had to know that was what I most wanted to hear! Sounds like another great episode and I'm excited about the Paige and Elizabeth scene too. They need one after all the sadness the last few episodes.

  4. This episode is definitely more upbeat after all the darkness in the past few episode, but all the characters are still operating in delicious grey areas. ;)

  5. Ah, grey areas make things all the better. I can handle some tension... it was just awful around episode 8-10 when Elizabeth was the great wall of no emotion and they could've used a cardboard cutout for Philip for everything he got to do. I love seeing them on screen together.

  6. Hah, cardboard cut out! xD There are certainly some Elizabeth/Philip scenes that will catch your eyes, I'm sure.
