This may be crazy, but my first thought in the scene with Philip in the bath towel at the motel was that Elizabeth had come to see him. No way are they going to have the FBI raiding his hotel room at this point... the show would be over. Plus, they're always sticking in the wrong dialogue in the promos to add drama. Maybe we'll finally see some making up (and not between Elizabeth and Gregory, yuck.)
I don't think your suggestion sounds crazy, at all, given the written preview for this episode. The preview suggests that Gregory's drug connections are leading Stan straight in Elizabeth's direction. No doubt this will royally piss off Phillip on several levels, both personal and profession. And I could easily see Grannie or someone else in the KGB dispensing with Gregory's services, because of this. Remember what Grannie did to that agent Robert's wife when she became a liability? IMHO Grannie wouldn't think twice about doing the same thing to Gregory if he's become a liability.
It may be wishful thinking on your part, and mine, but yes, in the preview, there is a scene where it looks like Elizabeth was bending over the counter in her kitchen and crying.
Haha, please not them no! But looking at the trailer again, after they raid a room, we see a shot of dark man in a white sweater being chased down the street. He runs straight into the FBI's hands, it looks a lot like Gregory. And this may confirm it: Gregory is wearing a white sweater in the promotional photo's.
It looks lite it's Gregory getting caught, the promo shows a dark man in a white sweater running into an FBI ambush and Gregory is wearing a white sweater in the promotion photo's.
Not to get your hopes (or mine :P) up, but I think it's fairly safe to say he gets caught or killed. ;)
I'm dead sure it's Gregory in that scene too (and am not uncrossing my fingers until Wednesday). The part with Philip in the hotel room is where I think they're trying to be sneaky and put in a sound clip from another scene of them yelling "FBI" where I'm hoping it's really Elizabeth at the door :). Time for a good makeup scene after watching our favorite couple torture each other for weeks.
To think this could be the one way Grannie could earn her way back into my good favor, LOL... and yes, Philip has looked tortured for the past episode and a half. He's not going to be wild about the idea of Elizabeth going to see Gregory.
I'm just hoping the Philip and Elizabeth "cold war" doesn't continue on for the rest of the season. Watching the family destroyed over a fried chicken dinner is something I can only stand for a week or so.
Gregory can't be gone too soon. I just hope we aren't forced to sit through too many Elizabeth/Gregory scenes before he bites the dust (or goes to jail). I find their scenes almost as nauseating as the Martha/Clark sexcapades (almost).
Exactly! As satisfying as it might be on some level to see Philip whack Gregory, Elizabeth would never forgive him. If their relationship is cold now, it would quickly become nuclear winter once she learned that Philip killed her ex-lover. His life would be a complete hell afterwards. Let Grannie (or someone else) do the deed.
I'm right there with you. ;-) I don't generally get excited at the thought of a character dying, but I would honestly be thrilled to see this character disappear. I don't care if lives or dies, I just want him gone.
Wasn't that awful? Incredibly sad. In some cases divorce is for the best, but in this instance, I don't see how it will really benefit anyone (personally or professionally).
The two kids who play Paige and Henry deserve credit for their performance. It was very realistic.
Yeah, I've had no love for Gregory since that scene early on where he tormented Philip about having slept with his wife. Just a jerk. Will not be at all sorry if we get to see him go.
Agreed! Perhaps he will have cyanide in a hollow tooth? ;) If he's dead he really will be gone, if he's captured we get more torture and interrogation scenes with him.
It can be for the best, but when it affects your kids this much it clearly isn't. They should set aside their personal differences for the good of the kids in this case. And while they're back living together maybe they can resolve their issues as well. ;)
I thought it was cruel too. I can understand him being hurt Elizabeth chose Philip over him, but really, he was the one intruding in their marriage all those years. He had no one but himself (and Elizabeth) to blame. I'm also interested to see if tomorrow we finally get to see Philip express some anger on that subject (and Elizabeth too, about his affair)... I thought it was off that they had that one blow up and then seemingly just dropped it.
I know... I'm afraid to get my hopes up, but I'm ready to see them stop the focus on everyone else and get back to Philip and Elizabeth and all their problems (goodness knows there's plenty of material there!) Anyone know if we get a preview this week? I know they're not an every week thing.
>>>I thought it was off that they had that one blow up and then seemingly just dropped it.
IMO, Phillip buried his anger - which does occasionally show, if only briefly - because he didn't want lose Elizabeth. Especially, after she admitted that she was finally starting to fall in love with him.
I believe he was telling Elizabeth the truth when he said it was "only you". Based on what he's said and the way he's behaved, starting with the first episode, I think he fell in love with Elizabeth years ago and he wanted to believe that deep down, even if she didn't express it, Elizabeth had come to love him, too, over the years. I think that was why he seemed so shattered by Gregory's revelations. Until that moment, IMHO, he'd never fully comprehended just how "fake" their marriage was from Elizabeth's POV.
Elizabeth has discussed how difficult being forced into this marriage was for her. I would like to see Phillip do the same, and explain to Elizabeth, who can be rather obtuse, just what it has been like for him to live in a phony marriage, raising children, and giving up his former love, to be with a woman who (until recently) felt nothing for him. Granted Elizabeth came into the relationship traumatized by the rape and her austere childhood. I realize how difficult that must make it for her to connect emotionally with others. But it's not like this life they share has been easy for him, either. And, as far as we know, he didn't have a female version of Gregory to confide in.
It will be interesting to see how their relationship progresses.
You put into words exactly what I would like to see. And I have my fingers crossed because of the title (Only you) that maybe we will finally see some honesty from these two, especially Philip, who can be so closed off.
Well, since I'm a contributor to this site (and wrote two previews for The Americans), I can say I haven't seen a message for a screener yet. Which is odd, because we have had one for the past several episodes.
At least there's not that much longer to wait, in any case! I really hope tonight's episode makes some forward progress in the relationship, or at least deals with it. Even if they end it with them still separated, last week's just felt so unsatisfying because it was like they threw all this big stuff out there at the end of "Mutually A.D." and then ignored it. As much as I like the spy stuff and the 80s stuff, Philip and Elizabeth and their relationship are the heart of the show and when you take that out, it loses vigor. I understand why they needed to fall apart for a bit and expose the flaws in the "relationship" they were previously building, but I just hope the coming back together will be worth the torment of watching that! (And enough with the barf worthy Martha scenes!)
There's a preview online! Albeit a short one, because it was only released this afternoon. Too short to write a decent preview. But B3rt4 put some quotes together for the preview! Sounds like more character progression and less plot. I think we'll like it! :-)
That was actually really fun trying to guess who said the quotes, and I'll bet even more hilarious when I see how wrong I was (kind of like playing Mad Libs.) I REALLY hope we get character progression too. And plenty of Philip and Elizabeth time to make up for last week too. (If I have to sit through 30 minutes of Gregory and Martha and only get a spare scene or two of P/E I think I'll throw something.)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Now is it just me, or did it look like maybe something happens to Gregory? Was Elizabeth lowering her head and crying there near the end?
ReplyDeleteSounds like wishful thinking :P
ReplyDeleteGuilty as charged!
ReplyDeleteOh, I wish, I really wish. :P

ReplyDeleteYeah, agreed, it looks like she is on the phone too getting bad news and reacting to that.

ReplyDeletePerhaps we could have Philip kill Gregory? :D
I don't know if they'll make up so soon, but I surely hope so. Watching the kids react this past episode was heartbreaking. :(
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, didn't think what I said through! Just so overjoyed at the prospect of Gregory being dead. :P
ReplyDeleteI feel a bit like a freak now, being exciting with a character dying. ;)
I'm just hoping the Philip and Elizabeth "cold war" doesn't continue on for the rest of the season. Watching the family destroyed over a fried chicken dinner is something I can only stand for a week or so.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely they should!

@halliebear:disqus @auroradawn83:disqus haha yes, you are both right. I just got carried away. ;)
