-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC led the Tuesday overnight troops, besting second-place CBS (which featured repeats of “NCIS” and “NCIS: Los Angeles”) by 11 percent. But the big winner of the evening was “The Voice” on NBC, which topped the 8 p.m. hour with a 9.4 rating/16 share and is expected to lead the network to nightly adult 18-49 victory. Minus an original installment of “NCIS” in the competitive mix, “The Voice” built from last Tuesday’s opener (8.4/13 on March 26) by 12 percent. And it grew from year-ago occupant “The Biggest Loser” (4.2/ 7 on 4/013/12) by 124 percent.

Despite the lead-in support, two episodes of NBC sitcom “The New Normal” (including the season or series finale) did not benefit with a 3.3/ 5 in the overnights at 9 p.m. (#3) and a 2.6/ 4 at 9:30 p.m. (#3). Comparably, the 9 p.m. edition of “The New Normal” held only 33 percent of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (9.9/16). Note to NBC: get the axe sharpened for “The New Normal.” It has no future.

At 10 p.m., NBC’s “Smash,” which shifts to Saturday this weekend, earned its downgrade stripes with a very last-place 2.5/ 4 in the overnights at 10 p.m.

On ABC, the live “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show was the standout, with a 10.0/16 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Splash” (4.3/ 7) by 133 percent. One year earlier, “Dancing With the Stars” scored an 11.4/18 on 4/03/12. Overall, week three of “Splash” finished third in the 8 p.m. hour with a 4.3/ 7, which dropped by nine percent from last Tuesday. (Three-week overnight track: 6.4/10 – 4.7/ 8 – 4.3/ 7). That 4.7/ 8 last week translated into 6.72 million viewers and a 1.7/ 5 among adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day data).

At 10 p.m. on ABC was older-skewing “Body of Proof” at a dominant 6.2/11, which dropped year-to-year by 18 percent (versus a 7.6/13 on 4/03/12).

Over at runner-up CBS, encore telecasts of aforementioned “NCIS” (#2: 7.0/12) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#2: 6.2/10) led into expected-to-be canceled “Golden Boy” at a not so golden 5.1/ 9 at 10 p.m. Comparably, “Golden Boy” was only on par with an original telecast of “Unforgettable” one year earlier.

Elsewhere, Fox opened with demo friendly “Hell’s Kitchen” at a fourth-place 3.6/ 6 in the overnights at 8 p.m., followed by a repeat of “New Girl” at 9 p.m. (#4: 1.7/ 3) and an original episode of “The Mindy Project” at 9:30 p.m. (#4: 1.8/ 3). The CW populated this first Tuesday in April with repeats of “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 0.6/ 1) and “Beauty and the Beast” (#5: 0.5/ 1).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
