This episode was really distateful, all around. The creators of Glee seem to think anything is fair game for their ratings ploys, and that's a shame. Also, I'd just like to say that the "viewer warning" at the beginning was not specific enough.
It was too soon. They didn't air a single promo that mentions the fact that it's about school shooting. The parents of Sandy Hook children deserved at least that.
Also that plot about the asteroid... It ended with such a dry unfunny note that it was unecessary. The writer of this episode has never succeeded in writing a quality episode though (I Kissed a Girl, for example) so i wasn't surprised about that.
Glee writers are just a bunch of talentless guys. Such a tasteless episode. And the acting was so terrible especially Tina and Sam. Kitty was the only one that made me shed a tear, and Becky and Sue. Give me NY!
It's unfortunate that the Glee writers and Showrunners continue to try to handle these types of topics and think they can do them justice. The do 1 episode about a topic that is receiving a lot of public attention at the moment and then they completely forget about it ever happening with zero follow up. The only reason they even attempt to tackle these subjects is so they can say they deal with real life issues and that they "save lives." This type of episode should never have made it to the screen so soon after Sandy Hook. Yes, the acting was good, especially Heather Morris, Becca Tobin, and Jane Lynch. But Glee can't handle these subjects in a way that does not end up offending and disgusting it's viewers.
It is way too soon for an episode like this. I pray no one involved in a school shooting happened upon it. It's like they let an intern write the episode. I'm getting sick of watching Sam falling 'in love' with everyone. By the 3rd time, it comes across as desperate. Mixing Sam's hero complex with poor writing, a sensitive subject, no New York side, and a whole lot of angry shippers only equals a hot mess.
Heather Morris did some awesome acting, others fell short. The story has so many plot holes...I'm tried of this "Katie" character. My fav moment was lady tub....though I don't understand how she lived that long. Other wise, too many gaps, from who was the door and # number of shots etc.
I agree with your comment about how this may be like Dave's suicide storyline, having no follow up whatsoever. If Glee does address the aftermath of the shooting in the coming episodes, then I think that's the only way to justify it's inclusion as a storyline. But considering the last 4 episodes will likely be more Rachel auditioning and storylines away from Lima, I suspect we'll only get a couple lines reference next week. I hope I'm wrong about that though.
Also, the fact that it was a character with Down's Syndrome who was the so called 'shooter' is disgusting. This does nothing to help people's perception of this condition, or mental health in general.
I personally don't see the big deal about this episode. Yes, I understand that a shooting has happened very recently, but this episode draws light on what happens when a country allows people to buy guns.
I agree with most of this comment, but I don't agree about the lack of a New York story being a mess. Though I don't know that the episode achieved anywhere near the level of success as some of their "hot topic" episodes, with a lot of it being just plain distasteful, I think that cutting away to New York would have taken away from what the writers were trying to do. Keeping it contained helped keep the intensity of the moment. Unless they worked in Blaine calling Kurt for a last goodbye or Brittany contacting Santana, who I think is still her best friend, or something along those lines, I think that the writers made the right call with keeping this one in Lima.
Anyone that could call this episode awful well... I think that is awful and honestly you must be pretty close to it yourselves. Yes this was a tough and different episode but it was one of the best. For the first time I actually felt that everyone on this show could act. I AM PROUD TO CALL THIS EPISODE AWESOME, AMAZING, FANTASTIC, WONDERFUL AND POSSIBLY THE BEST EPISODE I'VE EVER SEEN! Shame on those of you who think this was awful. You want to know whats awful someone like Becky thinking she needs a gun to protect her self. THAT IS AWFUL!! Things like this are happening in real life, kids don't feel safe and some of them feel like a gun is there only form of safety at home and at school.
tonight's glee episode was good but lacked. it dealt with the issues of bringing a gun to school and school violence directly and in-directly. if they took away the side stories of ryder's catfish and sam & brittany storyline including lord tubbington and also the will and beast arc. this epi would have been a better episode and a powerful one at that. Also if they didn't sing as well. They should have delve more in Becky's story about being scared of going into the real world, wanted to know what she was going through. but i do get her reasoning behind carrying the gun. we couldve have seen those important scenes in what makes becky get the gun, would have been powerful scene of becky just going to her father drawer and picking up the gun, deciding on her moral code. could have seen what the entire school was going through after they heard the gun shots. fake gun shots ive ever heard. would have been great to see what sue did to clear the evidence (told only through dialogue) and the aftermath of becky when she shot the gun. Sue's excuse to Figgins felt like a cop-out to me because in school's we have cops and state troopers that protect us, why would bringing a gun to school be a right choice, really cleaning your gun because it needed a clean, wow. sam and will trying to be the hero was over the top, felt forced. This whole episode could have been a becky-centric episode. why would you want to film yourself during a school shooting, i just didn't feel right to me. the issues wasnt as strong throughout the epi, but i doesnt bring awareness. plus i heard 3 gun shots, but sue said he covered only 2, but i could be wrong. poor execution on how the episode turned out, it was still good and one of the top 5 really good /bestepisodes of glee in the entire series. many flaws in this episode. should have shown what was going outside after everyone evacuated and also should have shown the students reunited with family and friends and also explore more the recovering stages of the students and school as a whole. before i knew it was becky, i was like glee just pulled a columbine, and i thought the shoot would be an average student. but after i found it was becky i had more of an understanding.
I understand that the topic is sensitive and I believe that it could have been broached in a much more sensitive way (i.e. I hate the fact that the "culprit" is someone with a mental disability. Completely inappropriate, though I appreciate Sue's caring.), but I was definitely affected by the acting. I was in tears watching, even with the characters that I really don't care much for. Brilliant acting, it was really nice seeing Heather Morris in the spotlight.
School shootings has happened before, not just so recently. Its like suggesting we shouldn't address any issue as it has been in the news recently. I thought it was an ok episode but they did not address issues on how to solve gun crime or prevent it and I was so angry that it was Becky that they had chosen to have the gun. And this Ryder situation is annoying!
I agree with you in pretty much every term, except about how you think it was "inappropriate" for Becky to be the "culprit" of the shooting. I thought it was a great way to explain the whole episode without anyone having to die or get injured and the drama she was going through wasn't something out of this world. I didn't feel like everything happened because she had a disabillity, I felt like it happened because she was going through these big emotional issue whilst being a very sensitive person, something that could happen to just about anyone. And let's just face it, Sue covering up for her was the best way to send on a brilliant actor/character that has been greatly underused for the past two seasons. I just fear this might be the end of Glee.
every1 is saying its too soon. when is it ok??? when every1 4gets about the shootings?? as sad as it is, the shooting happened. there is no way to do it justice. Glee simply portrayed something that is a major concern today. watching it may make u feel angry, not because its true, but because u knw that real ppl died and were hurt.
the part during the shooting itself had me freaking out and Blake Jenner's acting in the Ryder storyline broke my heart, but the rest was not that great. I wish there was more drama surrounding the actual shooting like other shows have done. It just seemed like they wanted to do a shooting storyline, but didn't want to make it even more intense than it needed to be
I was so confused with this episode I missed a little bit of the shooting part so when I turned back to the episode I was like "what the????" it was a very weird episode. However I was not expecting Sue to do what she did by taking the heat from Becky. Becky is really a sad kid who needs someone to guide her for her life because if she doesn't get help she's more likely to actually kill herself and that's just really bad.
BTW: Thought this episode was the one for next week so I was excited to see it until I realized it isn't that episode.
Shame on people for having a different opinion? I don't think so. It isn't 'awful' for someone to disagree with you, it's perfectly reasonable and within their right.
Too soon? I know that Sandy Hook is still in really recent memory, but it wasn't the first school shooting, and unfortunately, I don't think it will be the last. Was it soon enough for the parents of kids that were killed at Columbine? Probably not. I respect Glee for taking on topics like this, since these things do happen, and it's important for people to get a glimpse of the warning signs.
That being said, I don't know that they did it terribly well. They took a different tack by making Becky the "shooter", which was a good way to keep the students safe, but maybe not the most helpful when it comes to understanding why these kids do what they do. It seemed to be more of a commentary on gun permits and ownership than anything else... to me, anyway.
Watching this episode back, I've come to the realization that Glee didn't really tackle school shootings at all. Yes, the fear was there, as they had no way of knowing that there wasn't actually an active shooter. Some of the acting that came out of that choir room was fantastic, and that whole scene was just chilling. Heather Morris, Chord Overstreet, Becca Tobin, and Melissa Benoist were particularly good. But at the end of the day, it seemed to be more of a commentary on the current firearms debate - and whether or not private citizens should be allowed to carry firearms. Still, I could understand why it upset some.
Beyond the insensitivity that has became Glee's staple, the real problem for me was the unbashed manipulative nature paired with the ultimately low stakes.
It was a shooting episode without a shoter, it minimized a whole side to only focus on the kids crying and being emotional wrecks to force the emotional response in the viewer when there was really no danger. The ultimate "have your cake and eat it too".
Now it's the second time that tragedy is used merely to force reactions in the main characters. First Karofsky and now Becky; it's not about their inner turmoil, is just about how the other's feel about it, focusing the emotional reaction of the main characters to force the audience to feel the same.
Besides all the other moral and character related insensitivities, that alone, that manipulation of the narrative to fabricate a "tear jerker" is disgusting. I actually can't believe how the upped "On my Way".
maybe coming from a country where shootings are isolated incidents i did not find this episode as in ill taste or unfounded as others. As with all things this is down to ones personal opinion. I did not go into this episode thinking of a school shooting, in my mind it dealt with the issue of fear of letting your mind go to that worst scenario place. After watching the episode twice this has not changed. The sad actions of one individual (in this case Becky) could in the end bring the majority to their knees with fear and unknowing. In this case Will's words ring true 'they lost something today, their innocence'. We are all to some extent innocent but I must say that Brittany in the bathroom had me in tears, that a character so intrinsically good and naive on hearing that one sound could breakdown, that she knew what it could be. To me that was the very hardest thing to watch.
Was the episode hard to watch? in my view at times yes. Did it portray a school shooting? in my view no. Was it meant to? maybe, i couldn't possibly say.
As for Sue's covering of Becky's actions this was, again in my view, in keeping with her character. She is a woman who watched her sister deal with the 'real world' of which Becky is so scared and be beaten down. She is a mother of a downs syndrome child who, with all likelihood will face the same problems and dilemmas that Becky herself was facing. She did what, in that instant, she thought best. At no point did I think that Becky had any intention of causing harm to herself or anyone else. She was a scared young girl who did not know what to do. Sue probably thought the same. Should Becky be punished for being scared? At this point i do not know, maybe a third watch will make this clearer for me.
Well I loved it. The writers tried to play with my emotions and they won :P what can I say I cried like a bab, Chord and Hemo were freaking awesome and I don't like them (acting wise) that much usually. Blake was so good too. Just everyone was on their A game for this episode. I even cared for the newbies.
Powerful episode, very well acted and bring some great moments for the glee history. Who complain about this episode don't know the real message here. The fear of lost, the fear of not say the last words, this is Glee bring her best.
I thought the One Tree Hill episode that featured a school shooting episode with the shooter being a bullied and ignored student did a tremendous job of displaying an example of a school shooting - it did not blame anyone, as it also showed it from the view of the shooter being an angry, depressed but confused young man who needed help and was seeing no future and ended up killing himself. It left imprints on the lives of everyone involved in the episode and showed the consequences and aftermaths of a school shooting in an amazingly realistic way. And may I say that the episode was very VERY shortly aired after a real life school shooting.
I thought making Becky the shooter was extremely ineffective and unnecessary and even offensive, it's almost like they had a chance to really show something REAL for a change and while the acting by the students and teachers in the episode was impressive especially Brittany in the washroom, I felt like they pulled their punches.
I felt the first half of the episode was stupid and childish and pointless. not really dealing with anything real or tangible - We had a catfishing storyline which was alright I suppose, but then we had the moronic storyline of Brittany and Sam and her cat and the stupidity of singing a full length love song to Brittany's cat in the school auditorium In addition we had the dumb meteor plot, the just-plain-awkward-and-out-of-character Lady and The Tramp dinner between Coach and Mr. Shue. The only realness in the whole first half was Becky and Brittany's conversation about leaving high school..
Then the end, we have Sue taking the fall for Becky - why? Becky may be a mentally disabled student but that does NOT mean that she doesn't know the rules of the school or the difference between right and wrong and a mental disability DOES NOT or rather SHOULD NOT exempt her from having to deal with the consequences of HER choice to bring a loaded gun to school..
I totally agree. I haven't seen the One Tree Hill episode that everyone keeps talking about, but the writers severely weakened their chances at making a real impact with the way that they handled Becky's situation. By brushing Becky's decisions off and having Sue take the fall, they make the whole thing seem okay because she has a disability. Yes, Sue has always felt the need to protect Becky, but she shouldn't be taking responsibility for a girl who knows the difference between right and wrong. And because of that, she should have to experience the repercussions for her actions just as anyone else would.
All in all, I was really frustrated by the episode. Though the fear that the glee club kids radiated, especially Brittany in that bathroom stall, was really powerful. I just think Glee missed the mark with its message on this one.
You should watch it, find it and watch it, I think it's on Youtube One Tree Hill 3x16 - There is maybe only a handful of episodes that have ever effected me as strongly as that one did. Here's two videos about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-zKNM6zkEg and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6DuAkwzzbw
I think this is probably the 5th time I've been very disappointed in an episode. I mean wow. It was just all over the place. At first I was excited, b/c it said Viewer Discretion is advised, and I automatically thought ohh school shooting, this should be interesting! (Not saying school shootings are, I just mean the fact that it took them 4 years to finally do an episode like this, they've covered everything else, to me this was overdue) But it wasn't. It was sooo, idk, i don't have a word. Blah? Boring? Predictable? Idk, usually when I watch a serious episode like this there's at least one tear or some OH NO emotion on my part. Like with Karofsky's suicide attempt then the aftermath of him and Kurt in the hospital. Or when Santana came out to her grandmother and her grandmother disowned her. Or even when we found out Burt has cancer. Hell Blaine singing his heart out to Sam was even more emotional then this episode. All those examples, great acting!! This episode I felt nothing, not a thing. Brittany had the best acting, that bathroom scene, I was really hoping she wouldn't make a sound. But earlier I was thinking I really wanted to slap her for putting on a performance for her cat. Hahaha, oh boy, idk how Sam does it. Anyways this whole Katie character was a real let down, I actually felt bad for Ryder in the first scene. Kitty finally admitting the truth to Marley was wayyyy overdue, and it's a shame it took a freaking false school shooting for her to admit it. I kinda suspected Becky was the "shooter" b/c she was freaking out about not wanting to leave H.S. idk how to explain it, but i just had a hunch. Especially when Sue said it was hers, that story she made up, I KNEW she was covering up for Becky. Now Sue is fired!! Seriously, now the writers are getting rid of Jane Lynch?!?! That better not be permanent. I think the only thing that made me laugh in this episode was when Will signed Shannon up for online dating and Ken Tanaka was interested, that gave me a little giggle....other than that, it was just blah.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
This episode was really distateful, all around. The creators of Glee seem to think anything is fair game for their ratings ploys, and that's a shame. Also, I'd just like to say that the "viewer warning" at the beginning was not specific enough.

ReplyDeleteI thought the One Tree Hill episode that featured a school shooting episode with the shooter being a bullied and ignored student did a tremendous job of displaying an example of a school shooting - it did not blame anyone, as it also showed it from the view of the shooter being an angry, depressed but confused young man who needed help and was seeing no future and ended up killing himself. It left imprints on the lives of everyone involved in the episode and showed the consequences and aftermaths of a school shooting in an amazingly realistic way. And may I say that the episode was very VERY shortly aired after a real life school shooting.
ReplyDeleteI thought making Becky the shooter was extremely ineffective and unnecessary and even offensive, it's almost like they had a chance to really show something REAL for a change and while the acting by the students and teachers in the episode was impressive especially Brittany in the washroom, I felt like they pulled their punches.
ReplyDeleteAll in all, I was really frustrated by the episode.
ReplyDeleteI think this is probably the 5th time I've been very disappointed in an episode.
