Loved the Lost references and Troy was great with everything he did in the episode, every line, and little look at his puppet. The Dean was pretty funny in being super overprotective of Jeff. The songs were a little hokey in some parts, but I always like when the group bonds together. Also liked the bit of Sara Bareilles being in the episode since they used her song int he first clip show episode.
So I'm guessing this was one of the episodes Chevy Chase wasn't in. Just pieced together lines for him. And I know the Dean was into Jeff before, but they played it so much more subtly before, that's my one gripe really.
What was really cool during Harmon's era is that they never bothered to explain the references - they knew they were doing a show for nerds and geeks. Now it's all Lost this and Prison Break that. That's two bad things at once - explaining the jokes and wasting time that could be spent on other jokes.
Valid point. The writing may not be as sharp, I love Community (one of my favorite shows), but I am aware that it isn't what it was with Dan Harmon. Still, that's not to say that Dan Harmon didn't have stinkers (there are a number of episodes I thought were far beneath this season's episodes).
I'm getting off track, the show may not be as sharp or concise as it once was, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. It's unfair to keep comparing the show to Dan Harmon's era, unfair to the show and to the writers and to the Dan Harmon. Sorry, I went a bit more into it, but the show is still funny at least.
I thought id really dislike this episode but i didn't, It was pretty decent. The lyrics to the songs could have been better. A lot better but still, one of the stronger ones of the season and nowhere near the worst of the series and judging by my attitude towards this season thats a pretty big complement. That being said it would have been fucking awesome if they got Dan Harmon to play the mountain man. I know its so far fetched but could you imagine?
Very mixed feelings on this one... Definitely wasn't as bad as I though it would be... And I didn't particularly like the claymation episode as well... All I know is when I'll be re-watching season 4, I'll probably be skipping this one...
I'm not saying it's because Dan Harmon left, I'm not pointing any causes or motives, but what I'm about to say is how I feel when I watch Community these days: this season was bad. Not awful, not good, just bad. There wasn't a single episode that left me completely amazed like so many from the previous seasons (like "A Fistful of Paintballs" and "Remedial Chaos Theory") and I found myself enjoying the show less and less by episode. It's still cute, it's still sharp, the characters are great, but like Abed so remarkably remarked (heh): it's gotten stale. I do hope they get a new round next year and maybe things will get better but, quite honestly, if I was the one who picked up shows to renovation at NBC, Community, as is it right now, wouldn't be one of them.
Fair enough, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I agree on the fact that there hasn't been a single episode that left me completely amazed (your 2 examples were 2 I would've picked as well). It's sad that the show lost some of that creative edge, but I still love the cast and the characters.
For me, it'd be, this season was alright, not awful, not great, but alright. There were some episodes, this one, the Thanksgiving episode, that were pretty good episodes and I would argue were better than a number of episodes from Seasons 1-3.
And I'm with you, I do hope they get another season for next year and hopefully will, after having this season as a test run, get better.
I'll take back everything I just said if they surprise me with a Paintball episode before season's end, even if it's not as cool as the second season finale (which, let's just face it, would be impossible to top). HAHA But, yes, I love the characters, it's one of the greatest ensambles ever!
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

I really enjoyed this episode more than the rest of the episodes this season so far :)
