NBC vs. Salt Lake City, Act III.
After The Playboy Club (too erotic) in 2011 and The New Normal (too gay) in 2012, KSL, the NBC Utah affiliate, has now decided they will stop broadcasting Hannibal on the grounds of its "extensive graphic nature".
PROGRAMMING NOTE : After viewing the past few episodes, as well as receiving numerous complaints from viewers, KSL TV will cancel the airing of the NBC show Hannibal on Thursday evenings.
This decision was made due to the extensive graphic nature of this show. The time slot will be replaced with a special edition of KSL 5 News at 9 p.m.
NBC remains a valued partner to KSL TV. KSL is confident that with the proliferation of digital media, those who wish to view the program can easily do so.
As Mediabistro says, KSL is "owned by Bonneville International which is owned by Deseret Management Corporation which is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". So the Mormons control it then.

You guys just gave me a heart attack! Geez, just some stupid Mormons who can't seem to change the channel when they don't like something.
ReplyDeleteoh my good that network annoy me, being soo homophobic and now taking hannibal off the air too why cant that network be given a new name , the name
ReplyDeletethe bible channel .
I never watched the show so this is just going by the previews but it didn't seem worse than other shows on tv like american horror story, game of thrones, the following just to name a few current shows.
ReplyDeleteo.O it's not cancelled totally tho is it? Will it still air somewhere?
ReplyDeleteAhh Salt Lake City the more I read about it the scarier it sounds
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that Hannibal was any more graphic or crude than anything else on TV, but it was more effective at creating a disturbing mood than most network series. I can understand how it may be too much for network TV.
ReplyDeleteThat was one of many people's worries before the series aired.
I wish it would have been picked up by a cable network... Maybe it can move to a cable network if NBC cancels it....
I really don't see the problem. It aired at 10pm, had a warning at the start of each episode, and some pretty violent horror movies are aired on TV at any hour of the day. This is just biased.
ReplyDeleteI think a religious group having a say in television is wrong.
I don't understand why they think they need to police the channel for everyone. People have the power to change the channel. Use that power if there is something you don't want to watch or find offensive. Don't ruin it for everyone. I don't even watch Hannibal just geez, that just annoys me.
ReplyDeleteThe difference is those shows are on Cable.
ReplyDeleteNot canceled. It's just one TV station deciding not to show it anymore.
ReplyDeleteEven before I opened this topic I knew it had to be the Utah station again. Ugh.
ReplyDeletemore like: religious groups having a say in anything not pertaining to their religion is wrong.
ReplyDeleteI do not understand people who complain about TV-Shows. It is the easiest thing in the world to change a channel or turn off the TV if a show doesn't appeal to you. Protesting and getting it canceled doesn't benefit these people at all, because they're obviously not going to watch it either way. What it does is taking away a show from people who genuinely enjoy it and consider it good entertainment (which it is).
ReplyDeleteA show should not be canceled just because some religious fanatics have an issue with it. What you see in this show is REAL, these things actually happen in the real world. You can't cancel that. Shows like Hannibal remind us that there are actually people out there who do these kinds of things, but a lot of people have problems with that. They would rather prefer to live in their little bubble where nothing can touch them.
Well, that's crap. If you don't like it, don't watch. There is no reason to stop broadcasting such a good show.
Anyone really surprised? Also, have the people of Salt Lake City just considered turning their tvs off and reading a classic like Slaughterhouse 5? Oh wait, that's banned in Salt Lake City libraries. Ok they could learn something like from The Diary of Anne Frank... wait also banned. Something popular like Harry Potter... banned.
ReplyDeleteYeah... no surprises here.
Salt Lake City, just don't tune in on TV anymore. There's going to be a point were you wont be able to bear watching all the shows currently on TV.
ReplyDeleteUnbelieveble!! It airs at 10.00, so I don´t see the problem. If you don´t like it - change the channel!!! This would never happen in Europe.
ReplyDeleteI never watch NBC shows, now I know why.
Oh great. I'm sure that Mitt Romney is very proud of you. Seriously 50ties are long gone. Violence, guns & psychos are here, right at your door steps. Deal with it.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Salt Lake City hasn't passed a local ordinance banning all TV shows except old reruns of Hee Haw and The Lawrence Welk Show.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't a decision by NBC, it's by the local cable network that airs NBC.
ReplyDeleteLawrence Welk reruns would just lead to the need to cancel bubble machines and blowing bubbles!
ReplyDeleteYeah, in general. The US is supposed to have separation of religion from everything else. Especially since there are many religions here, although some are more common than others.
ReplyDeleteEven the Diary of Anne Frank...wow. I didn't realize how strict they were there.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking. Both Lawrence Welk and Hee Haw are way too racy for Salt Lake City. I mean, come on, Buck Owens was a total sex machine.
ReplyDeleteSalt Lake, what a freaking joke, one an have 5 wives but god forbid this should air there..
ReplyDeleteThe Following is not a cable show
ReplyDeleteThese affiliates do not play around. I read somewhere that one of the Cleveland NBC affiliates replaced an NBC drama episode with an old "Matlock" rerun because it gets better ratings!
ReplyDeleteBy 2016 we're going to have to look out for the CW affiliates. I'm sure they're not happy about the ratings!
AMC has a hole to fill after BB ends this summer. It would be an ideal scenario (which is why it probably won't happen)
ReplyDeletelove your picture of the cute dog :)
ReplyDeleteAh k, thought I misunderstood it ^ ^: Thanks :)
ReplyDeletei thought the point of Hannibal was to be disturbing cause I'm enjoying, guess the episodes will be online
ReplyDeleteit airs at 9 in Utah
ReplyDeleteIn Utah it would show at 9pm mountain time... not that that should matter...
ReplyDeletegreat news
ReplyDeleteIt sure is a pretty state but you have my sympathies.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's Pouch off Chicago Fire. <3
ReplyDeletethe bible channel. now that's funny. lol
ReplyDeleteI don't have those channels. I've seen some animals get killed off on shows, but yet seen a show where a pet of a main character has died. Especially when the pet is popular with the fans.
ReplyDeleteyeah it just came to my mind :) lol
ReplyDeleteKSL covers the ENTIRETY of Utah, Salt Lake itself is less than half Mormon now, so the complaints probably come from Provo (where BYU is) and the rural cities which are all over 95% Mormon. Also KSL is owned by the church but I *highly* doubt the residents of SLC proper are the reason this show was removed from the air.
ReplyDeleteThat's just crazy NBC.....always keeping us hanging
ReplyDeleteRead closer, it's not NBC that's canceling this, it's the affiliate that is making the decision.
ReplyDeleteyeah but you can't compare a show on NBC to what is on HBO, Showtime, FX or AMC cause there ratings are usually 18+ I wasn't referring to The Following, I was referring to the cable shows that Hannibal was being compared too.
ReplyDeleteReally is pathetic.
ReplyDeleteWhy do people feel the need to complain about tv shows when the imple solution is to use the remote and watch something else instead of ruining it for everyone.
ReplyDeletewow... viewers complaints??? don't they know how to change channels???
ReplyDeleteYes
ReplyDeleteUtah is a very beautiful place to live in . . . but the people here suck i live in SLC and am not mormon nor have i ever been why do they have a say in what i get to watch or not watch didnt GOD give me freewill or some thing? damn NAZI mormons
ReplyDeletehmm im never goin to that state lol
ReplyDelete
