Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)

Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

SUNDAY 3/17/13 Metered Markets

Rating/Share
CBS 6.7/11
ABC 3.9/ 6
NBC 3.8/ 6
Fox 2.2/ 2

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Sunday 3/19/12:
CBS: - 4, Fox: -12, NBC: -19, ABC: -26

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a clean Sunday overnight sweep for CBS with its combination of “60 Minutes” (7.6/14 – No. 1 for the evening), “The Amazing Race” (5.9/10), “The Good Wife” (6.9/11) and “The Mentalist” (6.5/12). But the older skew of “60 Minutes” and the two scripted dramas means adult 18-49 dominance for the evening will likely fall elsewhere.

In episode four news, ABC drama “Red Widow” finished a distant third at 10 p.m. with a 3.0/ 5, which trailed the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Revenge” (4.5/ 7) by 33 percent and failed year-ago occupant “GCB” (4.8/ 8 on 3/18/12) by 37 percent. In other words, the sluggish new midseason series results (excluding “The Following” on Fox) continues.

Earlier in the evening on ABC was a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” at a second-place 3.5/ 6 at 7 p.m., followed by sophomore dramas “Once Upon a Time” (#2: 4.8/ 8) and aforementioned “Revenge” (#2: 4.6/ 7) from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, “Once Upon a Time” dropped by 19 percent from the year-ago telecast (5.9/ 9 on 3/18/12), while “Revenge” slipped by 30 percent from year-ago occupant “Desperate Housewives” (6.6/10).

Over at NBC, two-hours of “Dateline” (3.7/ 6 from 7-9 p.m.) led into guilty pleasure “Celebrity Apprentice” at an improved 4.0/ 7 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m., which increased by eight percent week to week and is poised to win the 10 p.m. hour among adults 18-49.

Fox, of course, is dependent on the young adult demos to keep its animated Sunday block intact. A repeat of Bob’s Burgers opened with a 1.2/ 2 in the overnights at 7 p.m. (#4), followed by “The Cleveland Show” (#4: 1.6/ 3), “The Simpsons” (#4: 2.7/ 4), another episode of “The Cleveland Show” (#4: 2.3/ 4), “Family Guy” (#4: 3.2/ 5) and an original edition of “Bob’s Burgers” (#4: 2.3/ 4) from 7:30-10 p.m. As always, “Family Guy” is the standout.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)

  1. Seems like everything was low last night.

But yeah, Red Widow is dead. Upfronts, as a friend and I thought last year after almost nothing was cancelled, is going to be a fucking bloodbath of cancellations this year. Dreading it and excited to find out everything at the same time!

  2. It appears as if everyone is watching shows on cable on Sunday nights now.

  3. Revenge and OUAT are steady as always. Poor Red Widow. They really need to find something to put of Sundays at 10 and Thursdays at 8 that will stick. I am assuming SHIELD will be given the thursday timeslot in hopes to revitalize the hour

  4. Sunday on spring looks like Friday ....

  5. The Mentalist and The Good Wife get so many overall viewers, it's a shame it isn't down to that. Most watched shows of the night.

In the all important 18-49 demo, both shows skew older whilst airing on a night that's becoming increasingly bad for 18-49's as it is, so I don't see how CBS can be expecting much more. Put a new drama there or move another and, if anything, it'll score even lower.

I still see both being renewed.

  7. A shame CBS Is getting total viewers for night.Sorry but their shows are safe and predicable.Their the network of CSI and NCIS.

Once Upon a Time Is settling after being up aginst all these event to 7 Million total viewers but remains very strong In 18 to 48.Revenge Is holding on an dshould see a third season.Don't be shokced If ABC puts SHield In last hour on SUndays In the fall.

  8. It's weird that all midseason shows except for The Following are great flops. Who is to blame for that?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I do not agree. The Good Wide is nothing remotely like NCIS or CSI and never is predictable.

  10. The Good Wife is a guaranteed renewal since it's the vehicle for their new "multiplatform deal".

  11. Yes, comparing The Good Wife and NCIS is like comparing Whitney with Community just because they're on the same channel... :)
