Pretty good ep, except for the Huntress being able to snatch an arrow out of the air after practicing a few months and letting her go rather easily (to finish hunting her father down no less) requiring a ton of disbelief suspension..
I thought it was pretty good. I'm tired of Laurel not getting to be part of any good storylines though. I also thought that the Huntress being able to catch the arrow, her getting away so easily, and her father getting away was all very unrealistic.
Oliver is crazy. When he kills people he calls it justice, but when someone else kills people he calls it murder. Tommy is right to stay away from him.
Speaking of Tommy, I found him the most sympathetic character tonight. Poor guy.
Jessica was looking smoking hot, I gotta say. I don't think leather works for everyone, but it does for her. Now Oliver has extra motivation to take down Helena. His girlfriend getting shot and losing her really sucks.
Helena shot and killed several cops in thirty seconds. There's a huge distinction between what Oliver does and what she does. Oliver works to make sure that only people who deserve it are the ones he kills, Helena just kills anyone who stands in her way whether they deserve it or not.
Oliver was calling Helena a murderer long before she started killing cops. Even back when she was only going after her father and his men he was taking the moral highground when he was doing the exact same thing.
Oliver is as much a murder as Helena is. I love and root for him, but its true.
As you may recall, he started having those doubts because she nearly killed his mother. And he wasn't calling her a murderer then, he was telling her that her recklessness could get an innocent person killed, because even then she didn't seem to care.
The selective memory is strong here. Oliver always gives the people he kills a choice. Repent or die. He even gives them time to think about it. What do they always do? They load up with guns and choose their criminal activities over their lives. They choose death over life.
Helena doesn't give anyone a choice. She just shoots them. She started threatening Oliver and his friends when he wouldn't kill for her. Her father was in custody, killing him would be murder. Just like in the first two episodes she was in she chose to shoot first and ask questions later. Then she shot Oliver's girlfriend with a freaking shotgun after killing several cops.
Oliver saw in her first appearance that her recklessness and short-sightedness would eventually lead to her killing people because she could. Oliver doesn't kill everyone who gets in his way, he gives them a choice, he gives them time to make that choice, and innocent people are never caught in the crossfire because he works to avoid that.
Helena kills anyone in her way, doesn't give them a choice, has absolutely no problem killing innocent people, and as we saw in this episode friends and family are fair game to her.
Especially from that close. I remember an episode of Myth Busters where they showed a world class martial artist could only accomplish that feat a fraction of the time and he needed to be something like 50 feet away.
Helena is expressly hunting people down with the intent to kill them. Oliver kills thugs with guns who give him no choice. He's not executing people, she is.
Don't get me wrong, Oliver is in a dark shade of moral grey too, but the distinction is clear enough that he's not being a hypocrite.
"Or as I like to call her...your psycho ex-girlfriend."
Really liked the character work in this ep. Tommy suddenly jumped up to really interesting character. I loved every scene he had tonight.
Am I the only one who read Roy's reaction to the shot as, a ex-junkie knowing he shouldn't get that shot rather than someone scared of needles
I liked the way they wrote McKenna out. It was better than a lot of the soapy options they could have taken. I was only sorry I didn't get to see the scene where Det. Lance said to her "This is why you wait for back up!" :-)
Yes, Oliver is crazy. (Though, do they consider PTSD crazy?) But, for me, the big difference is that this show is about Oliver healing; about him becoming a hero. Helena's initial appearance was significant for him because he was looking at himself, if Dig hadn't started ragging on him about being a killer. Oliver seriously committed himself to regaining his humanity. Helena decided to become a killer and she doesn't want to change. Oliver's not totally sane yet, but
I do think Tommy was the most compelling character on screen tonight. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen when he was on.
I'm not sure Oliver is crazy. He's certainly damaged but to call him crazy kinda diminishes any actions he take that are actually heroic. I tend to see Oliver as a pragmatist. He knows murder is wrong, thus his anger towards people like Lawton and Helena, however he also sees killing as sometimes practical and necessary.
Ultimately though I think in order to understand Oliver's character there needs to be more revealed about Malcolm. They are in a way two sides of the same coin.
Don't worry, they have enough characters that I'm having trouble. It was was like that at the beginning of Lost. Anyway Malcolm is Malcolm Merlyn, the Dark Archer and Tommy's father.
Also I don't think PTSD is correct. PTSD to me would imply he wouldn't be able to cope based on his time on the island. Only the Oliver on the island doesn't seem to be traumatized. It just seems like he's changing as if Oliver Queen's values are being replaced by the Green Arrow's. He's becoming a man with a mission who's accepting the reality that killing can be a necessary act. Not sure if that's the best way to describe it but that's what I got.
The island was a crucible for Oliver...because of what we have yet to see happen to him, he was completely shut down when he returned. PTSD has a whole host of ways it presents itself. From what I've read, in previous research, it's not about him not being able to cope with what happened when it was on the island. It's more about the fallout that a person goes through having survived an extremely stressful situation (especially if that survival involved doing something that doesn't jibe with who they were before the bad thing happened.)
In Oliver's case, in order to survive on the island he had to lose the carefree playboy that couldn't face killing a bird for food to someone willing to kill to survive. Now back in his old life...he's trying to merge those two versions of himself and adjust his real world moral code with the moral code he adopted to help him survive on the island.
And I love that we're watching Oliver become the guy we saw in the pilot and first few episodes at the same time that we're watching him become a hero.
Much as I love the fight choreography and the action the character work in this show is my favorite element.
Is anyone else getting tired of waiting for Laurel to become a significant part of this show?! Her character has actually become annoying and boring for me. I’m also getting tired of watching Oliver make out with every other chick on the show when he supposedly spent 5 years waiting to come home to Laurel. I like the action on this show but it’s lacking in compelling relationships. When it first started, it was probably my favourite CW show. Now it’s taken a back seat to Beauty and the Beast, since I find it delivers both. I just find with Arrow, there’s just something missing.
Oliver cheated on Laurel with her sister.. I think it's foolish to believe that she would just welcome him with open arms or that he would consider himself worthy to her. If they do get back together eventually, it is only realistic that it would take time and they will need to sort out a lot of issues before that happens.
Yes, I agree it would take time. But by him collecting up a pile of ex girlfriends since he's been back doesn't exactly show her he has changed his strips now does it?! Especially after wanting and waiting for someone for 5 years, to move on so quickly and willingly doesn't give me the "I'm truly sorry" vibe.
Making Huntress such a one-dimensionally evil character was disappointing to me. It's one thing to want the father who killed her fiance dead, but how many (mostly innocent) people did she slaughter on her way there? I also found it unrealistic that she took down like six or seven FBI agents single-handedly in the safehouse. It's not like she used some smart tactic - she just went in guns (or, well, crossbow) blazing and killed them all easily, while all of their shots miraculously missed her. Here I thought those guys were well-trained.
There's a big difference between killing corrupt criminals, most of whom are killers themselves, and killing innocent people like all the FBI agents Helena dropped. The former is in the morally grey zone, even if it's for all intents and purposes a serious crime and will make most people view Oliver as a monster. The latter is evil, no two ways about it.
He didn't move on quickly, it's been five years, and he has a right to date others too. He hasn't cheated on McKenna nor Helena and he didn't jump to bed on the first date with McKenna so he has changed his ways. Either way, Laurel would be the one that would need to do the first step to be with Oliver, until then he won't consider himself worthy to her after what he did.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but how can an amateur vigilante with a crossbow take out an FBI guarded safe house? Or It would be a challenge to even Oliver who survived for years on an island, training and running from a paramilitary outfit. Helena's backstory does not really explain how she is so skilled at crossbows, hand-to-hand combat, etc.
Which is why bringing the Huntress back is not a good idea for the show. It's too unrealistic and her character is loathsome. Usually when I come to the comments section of any Arrow episode, I'd see happy comments, but this one the comments are divided between hating Helena and hating why Laurel is not getting screentime. I personally just hate Helena since the first 2 episodes she appeared. She made Oliver a stupid guy. I don't like that.
I like how they created a smart female character that is a worthy opponent of Oliver. I don't think she made him stupid, but I think she challanged him. I also think they don't have to return her to Starling City - Oliver is going to start travelling to other cities too, and they could accidentally bump into one another, and maybe she'll help him in something, and start her redemption plot from there.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteGlad they didn't go the psycho ex-gf route. As in her just coming back on the sole purpose of ruining Oliver's life.

ReplyDeleteYeah, but considering they let the character live I have a feeling that a storyline like that is on the back burner.

ReplyDeleteHelp! I'm blanking. Malcolm is Oliver's dad, right? If so, I was hoping we'd see more of him in flashbacks.

Her father got away because they didn't get the same actor, and to give her a reason to return again
ReplyDeleteI liked how they wrote McKenna out because they left the door open for her return. Maybe she'll even return as a future foe.
ReplyDeleteOliver also shoots people that come after him, she shot people that weren't even aware she was coming for them.
ReplyDeleteMalcolm is Tommy's dad. Robert is Oliver's

Great episode, but really they need to do something about Laurel she is one of the most under utilized characters in this series.
