Justified - 4.12 Peace of Mind - Ten Teases (minor spoilers)

24 Mar 2013

Alright all, here's my ten teases for this Tuesday's episode of Justified. If you don't want to be spoiled, turn back now.

Observations:
1. Raylan really doesn’t like the idea of having time off. After the last time, can you blame him?
2. ***** kills *****.

Quotes:
3. “That’s not how it works, Raylan.”
4. “Supendees don’t get to chose when they get suspended, that would be called a vacation.”
5. “Good-bye Johnny Crowder and don’t you ever call here again.”
6. “You’ve got some balls calling me.”
7. “It’s everybody wins day at Johnny’s bar except Johnny.”
8. “I’m late to church.”
9. “Always found peace comes from doing what your heart tells you what’s right.”

Other:
10a.Winona’s back. Joy…
10b. …But so is ADA Vasquez so less sarcastic joy.

So tell me, what are your theories as to what this all means? Is this finally the end for fan-hated Johnny or one of the favoured marshals as previously predicted in the comments section? Will Ellen May live to continue to annoy Ava or does she finally get the long-threatened death? Guesses on one of the other teases? I welcome all discussion as to what this could possibly mean for our favourite marshal and his snarky co-cast.

  1. ugh Winona back..can't stand her character

  2. Me neither. Luckily, she's only in a few short scenes. Turns out The Following is the best idea Fox has had in a while (anything to keep her off Justified really).

  3. I'm glad Winona will be back. And the more her appearances annoy those who don't like her, even better!

  4. I'm sorry, but...what's with all the Winona hate? It's not like she brings in any more drama than Raylan creates for himself, and despite the fact that they just can't make it work for themselves, they really do love each other...

...and this is coming from someone who's dying to see Raylan shack up with Rachel.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Do you mean you're hoping Raylan and Rachel hook up?

  6. I love Winona...and so does Raylan, so yes...joy! (unless she and the baby are in danger, which I won't like at all) I love Vasquez, too, but Raylan doesn't. My bet for #2...Boyd kills Colt or Ava kills Ellen May.

  7. Yes. Yes I am. I don't know when it happen, but, somewhere between S3 and this season, I've grown attached to the idea of Raylan and Rachel putting their differences aside and focusing on their similarities...not to mention all that sexual tension.

  8. I'm with you. I love Winona. She calls Raylan on his shit better than anyone, even Art.

  9. I'm inclined to agree. They're not the most obvious couple to ship but they would make an adorable couple.

My bets for two are these.
Johnny kills duffy - or vice versa or nicky kills johnny
There are five stars for the two names for #2 so it has to be either of them and there is supposed to be a showdown between nicky and boyd so im guessing that nicky kills johnny and thats what sparks the face off or something like that. Either way im excited for the next episode!

  11. Anyone think Ava's gonna get killed?? :(

  12. More sarcastic jibes at Winona...for no discernible reason...joy.

I love Winona, what's with the hate?

I remember when the hate started (mostly back in S2) and people were calling her 'shrill' and saying she was holding Raylan back from being 'badass'. Ridiculous. It just reeks of misogyny and thinly veiled sexism (not directed at the writer of this piece).

I'm pretty tired of female characters getting entirely unjust criticism. Skylar on Breaking Bad, heck even Andrea on TWD. Fair enough the writers have written the latter into doing some stupid things this season, but the hate goes beyond reason.

  13. Oooh. If that happens...Wynn better take that Winebago to Alaska or Costa Rica. Tonin will come after him big time.

  14. I'm glad you're excited for the episode. It's another great one, the number of stars is NOT necessarily proportional to the number of letters in either name. But it could easily go down either way.

  15. I appreciate your point of view, and I can't speak for all fans, but I think that Raylan makes some very dumb moves when he's with Winona in a way that he didn't do when he was with Ava.

I didn't so much mind Winona is season one but in seasons two and three she seemed to be a one note character. It's gotten to the point that since she's left Raylan, her only purpose seems to be to remind the audience that she's still pregnant. Even as a supporter, you have to give me that her plot this season has not exactly been the most interesting. But that's the challenge on a show with as many well written characters as Justified.

Personally, I prefer Ava with whomever she's with or even with no one because I think she's written better. It's the same reason I had doubts about Lindsey at first but there was always more to her than what she was showing and it's the reasons I appreciated the episode with Jackie Nevada.

I don't know about the other shows you mentioned but it's not always down to misogyny that people dislike female characters as an intelligent fan with thought-out opinions as many fans are, I take minor offense to that considering that I would just as soon have a show about badass Ava as I would badass Raylan. I'm sure in some instances it could be considered misogynistic but she's not exactly the most feminist character to begin with.

On a related note, I could say the same thing about Colton; he's in the episode, he makes Boyd do stupid things by being near him, and his appearance is less than thrilling to me.

  16. I'm pretty sure Raylan sleeping with Ava in season one was about the dumbest thing he has done other than shooting Tommy Bucks. In fact I think Raylan does extremely dumb crap on a very consistent basis. And I have to disagree as I find Ava and other characters like her to be the least feminist on television. She's not complex and quite simple, but I aslo don't assume that having a shotgun and trying to prove that you can hang with the boys makes one a feminist. Ava isn't even in control of her own destiny, it's Boyd and then a prostitute with a middle school education. Not to mention she's compromised her own morals and character to what seems like very little benefit to herself in the end. And before that in season one she was trying to hitch herself to Raylan bc he was determined to get out of Kentucky and she thought he was her ticket. Also the 16 year old obstinate behavior and getting kidnapped every other episode got old pretty quick. Needless to say, turning to a life of crime because your ex boyfriend dumped you for your current boyfriend is what I like to call, not smart. She hasn't even been shown that she could make her own way in life w/o a man.

Atleast Winona had the mind to take herself out of a situation she knew wasn't going to work for either of them. Glynco, Raylan leaving his job, buying a house, none of these things were her idea. But she knew Raylan well enough to know that it was all talk. She's saved his life, his job (and potentially his freedom), and taken care of him bc she loves him, and I find it more feminist that she wasn't willing to compromise her own happiness, future, and safety for the sake of a man. And how 2 minutes in one episode constitutes a plot, I have no idea.

I didn't mind Lindsey until they decided to give her a storyline and Jackie Nevada was so transparent and cartoonish that I hope they never bring her back. "If I were a man, I'm pretty sure I'd be just like you." or some such. Give me a break. In the end they're just female audience stand-ins used to tell the hero how pretty he is.

Gina, Sharon (may she RIP as she was smart enough to know to stay away from Raylan), loved them both and I hope to see the former next season.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I will agree with you that Raylan is capable of being a dumbass without Winona.

Which one's Sharon? Or Gina? Is one of them Carla Gugino?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I've never seen the whole Ava thing (not to mention Lindsay and *ugh* Jackie Nevada) explained so succinctly. I agree 100%

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sharon is the bailbonds woman (deceased). Gina is the gal from the guy's house where Raylan went looking for Lindsay and her ex. Carla Gugino's character was the horribly unrealistic Assistant Director of the Marshals who went around in tight skirts and high heels. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree with you completely on disliking Gugino's character and Sharon was a brilliant character that should have been on more before her death.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would've liked to have seen more of her, too. (Although we saw pretty much all there was to see! LOL)

I'm assuming the number of stars does not indicate the number of letters in that person's name because I can't even think of two Justified characters whose names consist of 5 letters. 3, 4, 6 or more, sure, but not 5. There are far too many possibilities for those stars... Boyd and Johnny? Ava and Ellen May? Boyd and Colt? Colt and Ellen May? Tim and Colt? Nicky Augustine, Wynn Duffy, Art, Drew Thompson... all of these people have build-ups to potential clashes, and I haven't even mentioned our favorite trigger happy marshal himself... Yikes!

It makes me so nervous that your post mentions the marshals specifically. I don't want ANY of them to die, but I have a bad feeling. Damn, how am I so excited and so scared for these last two episodes simultaneously?!

    ReplyDelete
  23. You are correct in that the stars have no relation to letters. And as such, all of your guesses are equally valid. As for the excitation and scared feelings, well, that's just the magic of Justified.

    ReplyDelete
  24. From what I've heard, there's no guarantee that The Following will follow the same story next season. Kevin Williamson was quite cryptic about that in a recent interview. Could be her part will be reduced and she'll be more available for Justified next season. Wouldn't that be nice? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I sure hope the person that's killed is NOT TIM GUTTERSON... hopefully he kills Colt. I'm waiting for that to happen.
I'm not a Winona fan. I think she slept with Raylan out of pure jealousy that he cared much for Ava & was sleeping with her. That's my opinion & there's other reasons why I don't like Winona...

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's an interesting theory and makes perfect sense as to why she would start up again with a man knowing exactly how it was going to have to end between them.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I just want to chime in and say that most (all of the lead) female characters on Justified are the creation of Elmore Leonard. If you are a fan of his Raylan stories, then, you'd know Winona is not going anywhere as Raylan and Winona have 2 children together ... never remarried.

But that doesn't mean Raylan won't continue to have fun along the way. According to Elmore Leonard (see "Justified: Elmore Leonard, Timothy Olyphant, and Graham Yost Live at the Paley Center"), pretty women are Raylan's Achilles heel.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No!!!! Long live Wynn Duffy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Raylan and Ava were already broken up with Winona slept with him. If Raylan cared for Ava so much he wouldn't have stop seeing her when Boyd got out of jail.

Winona has nothing to be jealous of Ava about, especially when it comes to Raylan.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hopefully one day, she is a criminal after all.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I know but I really like joelle carter!! Plus it'll totally push Boyd over the edge if they killed her off :/

    ReplyDelete
  32. Actually, while they did have two children together in the books, both were before Fire in the Hole is set so she isn't as big a part of Fire in the Hole as she is on the show. Besides they already broke with Leonard's mythology for the characters in that Winona has been remarried to Gary.
While pretty women may be his Achilles heel, it's not limited to Winona in any of her incarnations and in the books it never was. For instance Pronto, which a couple or three plot lines have been taken from, Raylan goes looking for a fugitive because of someone else. Winona is but a side note for most if not all of that book.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The words are not mine ... they're Elmore's. He speaks for himself. It's an interesting and a refreshing Q and A at the Paley Center event. Yost and Olyphant and Leonard all hold so much respect for one another. Nice to hear.
