  1. None of these. I'm not sure if any show has been "influential"

    ReplyDelete
  2. Sons Of Anarchy and Hell On Wheels

    ReplyDelete
  3. The Walking Dead. Shows how a Cable Network can run shortened seasons that compete in ratings with the Network Shows.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Person of Interest, because it reminds us of the ever-expanding "Big Brother" in today's modern world

    ReplyDelete
  5. Castle for me - I can't believe it's not on the poll, seeing as it's one of the most popular shows for Spoiler TV hits

    ReplyDelete
  6. Don't know if they are influential per se, but both The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones have raised the bar really high in terms of production and storytelling quality.

And both are now pop culture references, too!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead,in my opinion. It seems like everyone's talking about both these days.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Other - House of Cards

    ReplyDelete
  9. Influencial ? The Walking Dead, obviously.

This really is the landmark show of the 2010s, I'm not the biggest fan but I acknowledge that.

    TWD is proving that :

    - Horror can be made successfully in primetime on basic cable, pushing the limits of gore/violence on TV.
    - A small cable channel like AMC can beat network juggernauts like CBS and have the #1 show on TV.
    - Zombies are the new vampires, becoming mainstream fare now (e.g: Warm Bodies).
    - Killing off main characters one by one is a good way to keep your audience interested.

And it might be a little early, but I would also say House of Cards, Netflix's first fully original series, marking the collaboration of an A-list director (Fincher) and an A-list actor (Spacey) for a show on the internet, where the whole season is released at once. Now that is a little bit of a revolution, and with Netflix's other original efforts coming up in 2013, hopefully the first step of a game-changing idea embrassing the evolution of technology and consumer habits.

  10. Don't really thing any of those are influential. I would say lost but wrong decade

    ReplyDelete
  11. Influential. Hmm. I agree with the others; Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead seem to be the most popular these days. I know there are a lot more ASOIAF readers because of the show, but I don't think it has been ''influential'' in many other ways. It's an old story, and it's not like there are more fans of the fantasy genre now that the show exists. As far as I know, at least.

The Walking Dead definitely has some influence. Zombies are getting more popular, and now every time there's a zombie reference, people think it's a reference to The Walking Dead while zombies (believe it or not) actually HAVE existed for a while longer. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Supernatural started airing before 2010

    ReplyDelete
  13. Don't think Castle has infuenced any other shows? It's still basically a procedural crime show

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well, I don't think they had a lot of time to be that much influential, but Got and TWD had certainly raised the bar in the manner of storytelling and the scope of production in a TV show. I'm sure that they will have a big influence on new TV shows, which is already starting to happen.

Also, Person of Interest is most likely to become very influential. Not only that they successfully managed to make stopping crimes very realistic (rather than solving crime), but they presented the interesting form of artificial intelligence, something that may easily happen to us someday.

  15. For me I think it's OUAT, Person of Interest and Sherlock (BBC). Both OUAT and POI have gained a great fan following since their debuts in 2011 and both, looking forward, will probably define the decade (or at least a great part of it) in fantasy and action respectively. Sherlock also has become a great show despite only airing 6 episodes and is held in high regard by critics. I actually haven't seen The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, yet I do know that both these shows have been popular over the last few years and I'm sure in the future, they will inspire other new shows over the next few years.

    ReplyDelete
  16. In France, the most influential TV show is unconditionally Game Of Thrones. It's a real phenomenon since 2010 !

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think game of thrones. I haven't seen it yet. But I can't remember a show being this well recepted by all kinds of people.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I have nothing against the show as I actually love it, but how exactly is Once Upon A Time influential?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I also thought of House of Cards, but the fact that it's only offered on Netflix which is geo-locked, bumps it down a little lower because it isn't as accessible

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'd like to think the word "influential" means "beyond TV" in this case, which means The Walking Dead doesn't make the cut at all from my perspective.

I also thought of House of Cards, but the fact that it's only offered on Netflix which is geo-locked, bumps it down a little lower because it isn't as accessible to everyone who would be interested in watching it

  21. OUAT has given us a great throwback and reminder to the fairytales that have been told throughout our childhood. incorporating a lot of fairytales together in one story is a feat in itself and as OUAT continues to gain popularity, it will redefine how we look and view fairytales through a different lens. It's also a great family show on a Sunday night and one of the many sucesses on network tv that hasn't fallen flat in the second season (as opposed to other shows like Smash, Touch, even Unforgettable, that haven't had quite a major impact as both OUAT and POI).

    ReplyDelete
  22. So much so that it hasn't influenced you to watch it...?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lost Girl i guess for their unique portrayal of sexuality and female female relationships

    ReplyDelete
  24. Where is True Blood or Dexter? But honestly Sherlock the British production has had a profound impact.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree and the topic of female sexuality is also very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Remember it is a Disney product so they are sort of taking a skewed look at what is the typical Disney formula.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Actually it has carved out a its own niche. The Dramedy. The lightness of some of the episodes can collide with Heavy drama and action.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Like a number of those shows, what a relief to move away from the bloody tedium of modern TV to something a little different - Thinking of the Walking Dead, Lost Girl, Once Upon a Time and Game of Thrones in this list for daring to add a little more imagination to the ever-present tropes.

Personally, I rate Lost Girl highest because it is coming close to proving that - so long as the characters and stories are engaging/interesting enough - anyone can and will appreciate and enjoy an LGBT mainstream character. It is a common fallacy for people to assume that the stereotype of Lost Girl fan is LGBT woman, it's just not so.

Plus, it is sex positive. Compare that to mainstream shows like - say - Glee, that has gone to the trouble of "punishing" a newly sexually confident character with the tedium of a pregnancy scare, a storyline done to death. I have such an ideological objection to the inevitability of slut-shaming for strong women.

Plus it has a strong female heroic archetypal character as lead - something so rare that people still invoke Buffy and Xena as comparisons, although they were a decade or more ago.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Doccubus Army reassemble...we have a new mission!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I picked switched at birth because it's not your average teen drama. ASL is a big part of the show and the deaf characters aren't portrayed as disabled or needy.

I like Rizzoli and Isles too because it's nice to see a show with women in charge who can handle their problems themselves without having to run to a man to fix things.

The same goes for Lost Girl. Strong female characters who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty or break a nail. And unlike some American shows it's very open about sex. There's sex, people have sex, it happens, it's not dirty or weird or something that can only be talked about in weird synonyms, it's just a part of life.

    ReplyDelete
  31. lost girl till the end!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lost Girl definitely plays an important role among modern tv shows. Supernatural or Fantacy are yet some common themes that person can notice in today's Tv. But the fact that Lost Girl blends the aspects of Female passion & love to it's basic fantacy storyline makes the entire show quiet the unique one.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lost Girl becaue it has a strong female lead character which is rare and because this show treats LGBT characters diffrently and better than the other shows and also because this show is just AWESOME !

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lost Girl for many reasons. It treats the adudience as adults and pushes important themes and messages as much as possible for a non premium chanel show. Also the mythology is very interesting solid and writing the best thing sice a Joss Whedon show was on TV :)

PS. On a completely shallow note the cast is ridiculously attractive (love Anna) and at the same time not 'standard US tv' ideal and nonrealistic.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I want to read the books first, otherwise I won't want to read them anymore. And my study has been keeping me a little too busy.. so the reading part is taking me quite a while.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I picked Lost Girl because it's a show with a different story, captivating, addictive and very structured. The realism, honesty of relationships is absolutely touching. When I'm watching the episodes really feel each moment. They are actors with incredible chemistry and a true friendship that make us believe everything we see and this is something extraordinary. As many have said the story isn't real but the relationships are. The way the team, producers and writers do things, has a perfect logic. This show is by far one of the best I've ever seen and still has a lot to grow. There are many stories to tell and many moments to be lived. I think we should just be grateful to whoever had the bright idea to write and make this show and the unmatched quality of the actors that make our days are more beautiful and filled. Thank you all. You are amazing and I hope this show has many fascinating seasons. P.S. I love Doccubus=)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Killing off the main characters is not what is keeping my interest in the show. None of my fav characters have died yet so that's why I'm still interested in The Walking Dead. The character story lines and action are good. Not a big fan of gore but after watching Supernatural I'm less squeamish than I used to be.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think probably Game of Thrones (Haven't seen this because it's on HBO) and The Walking Dead have been most influential. They're starting to have influence. It's hard to say because the shows are so young. I think Person Of Interest and Once Upon A Time could get influential too. Being popular shows is the first step in becoming influential. TV channels only "copy" (in a way) other shows if they're really popular. I can't see any show under 3 million viewers becoming that influential.

    ReplyDelete
  39. InvestedInYourFuture24 February 2013 at 15:02

Gotta go for Lost Girl. One of the MOST progressive shows in the history of tv so far. Takes the meaning of gender, sexual and racial equality to a new level and, what's more important does not try to differentiate lgbt relationships in order to get free publicity.

In this show, writers do NOT make a big deal about on how the lead is bisexual - she just is. Its part of who she is and everyone in the show treats it as completely normal and usual. Its not there to be a "point". Its not there to the "focus" - its there because its normal and no different from being hetero/homo/a-sexual.

Which is something you will RARELY see in tv shows yet.

    ReplyDelete
  40. InvestedInYourFuture24 February 2013 at 15:04

OUAT took fairytales and turned them upside down, proving that something that, in our society, became associated with very early childhood, can be used to tell an adult story and WAS originally something quite adult.

It does not as big of an impact as some other shows that are on the list do, but it certainly changed the genre shows forever.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I appreciate that both of them took quite a risk with the amount of money invested in production - it was never the safest choice. And also that they, like a couple of other notables on the list, don't pander to that damned "family friendly" PG crap and boneheaded faux "reality" junk that infests so much of television and reduces it to unchallenging baby food - bland, safe and easy to digest.

    ReplyDelete
  42. LOST GIRL is the best show ever!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm a huge fan of not just Lost Girl as a TV show, but all of the knowledge it provides. For starters, All the mythological creatures, It's amazing how they are able to incorporate something such as mythical creatures into a show. Not a lot of people can variate mythological creatures without making them overly beastly now a days. The other aspect is the friendship. Friendship is one of those things that you have to openly give yourself to the other person. (not sexually) Trust is hard to come by for people, and Lost Girl portrays that if you have friends that you can trust no matter what, you gain strength that you can't ever seemingly explain. The last aspect I picked up was the fact that it shows love. The pains of love, the strengths of love. The world today needs to be shown that love is something that isn't just hetero anymore. It's for everyone, friends, family, and even significant others of the same sex or opposite sex. All the aspects of Lost Girl throw out a balanced and well put together series that is heart felt and warming. I again, say that the world needs some of this love to be show and portrayed. Too much is put into hatred and revenge that I feel humanity is losing the one thing that can unite us all. Lost girl though, does portray love, even its painful sides but with true friendship. Life isn't bad at all. <3

  44. Surely the best measure of inluence is in terms of imitation, not necessarily quality. So the best thing to look at is the range of pilots out for next year. And there are a few trends:

    1. Remakes of British sitcoms (probably influenced still by The Office) Israeli TV series (from the success of Homeland) and Danish TV series (from the success of The Killing).

    2. Period dramas, probably from a combination of success of Hatfield and the McCoys and Downton Abbey. Strangely a lot are being set in the 80s, not sure what influenced them (The Carrie Diaries didn't air until after commission). Probably just the age of producers

    3. Superheroes. Although these probably have more to do with film success than TV shows.

    4. Multi-Generational reformed family comedys. Probably influenced by Modern Family.

    5. Divorcee women who have a legal or police career. Probably influenced by the critical success of The Good Wife.

    6. Post apocalyptic dramas with a strong romance element. Probably influenced by The Hunger Games more than The Walking Dead or Revolution.

    7. The US navy. Perhaps based around Last Resort?

But the biggest influence from this decade is probably not on the list. Girls, reinvigorating the young female comedy drama series.

  45. Lost girl all the way

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think, of these options, probably Game of Thrones.

I would *like* it, to be Lost Girl, for the way it treats its female characters, but whether that's true or not remains to be seen. If every female friendship on television took cues from Bo and Kenzi, I wouldn't complain. If every romance - romance period, no qualifiers or clarifiers required - learned something from Bo and Lauren, far better still.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Game of Thrones, unfortunately. It has been referenced in almost everything lately. It's pretty clear that the show is influencing and will continue to influence for some time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Lost Girl is a ground-breaking show that I definitely enjoy. It's glad to see that the current couple of the show, Bo and Lauren, is not seen as a f/f relationship, but simply as a couple in general. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lost Girl - for every single reason mentioned here previously and I won't bother to steal and write in my own words.

    The Walking Dead in 2nd.

    DOCCUBUS ARMY <3

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just think of what Rizzoli and Isles could be. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That niche has been around for quite some time prior to Castle ever being on air. Sure, Castle has done a great job of playing around in that genre, but it certainly didn't establish it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I washed my hands of subtext years ago. It's time to go real or go home to be honest. Back at the start they were nodding and winking and saying that LGBT fans would enjoy this ep or that ep. Now they are saying it is a total fan fabrication. And nothing will change so long as people tune in anyway. Lost Girl is proving an important point - that it's not niche viewing with a limited demographic. It just takes courage to live up to that, and Rizzles doesn't have the courage, the will or the need.

    ReplyDelete
  53. That awkward moment when a fandom holds over 60% of power in a poll. And by awkward I mean awesome. ;) apparently doccubus army knows their power.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sons of Anarchy was 2008. Hells on Wheels though - historical drama is always a bold move for a TV channel to go with because it is so darned costly to make and so open to scrutiny. Is it a fair representation of the time and culture?

    ReplyDelete
  55. So far? From what's available? GoT.... having said that, it's very earlt to make that assesment at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dr. Hottie pants

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love Once, but I don't think it's very influential.
I want to say Glee because it has strong, positive LGBT themes and inspired other musical TV shows and has kind of made being that musical nerd an acceptable/cool thing. It's also really popular, especially among young people, and therefor reaches a big audience. But it also hasn't been good since the second season, so.
Looks like I need to check out Lost Girl!

    ReplyDelete
  58. To be honest, I have never heard that much about Lost Girl, I don't even what it is about, so I am very surprised it is winning this poll in such a big way. Maybe I should look it up. Voted for Game of Thrones, with the Walking Dead being a close second

    ReplyDelete
  59. OUAT is known to me as A: having a new take on fairy tales, B: strong female characters and good friendships, C: the "ew no homo" show complete with ignorant comments from some cast members (I seen those tweets on tumblr and they are ignorant no matter how you twist them), D: handling the issue of adoption/bio parent(s) really badly, E: Have some really amazing actors and actresses, F: Claims to be a family show but yet have plenty of stuff on it that is non-family friendly, G: Being overall very white, H: Had some good shockers and good at keeping its audience guessing during the first season. So pros and cons, but some of those cons are deal breakers for me.

Lost Girl got my vote for the sex positive, good LGBT approach, strong female characters and overall solid cast. The sex positive angle is so fucking refreshing instead of the standard Madonna/Whore syndrom that plagues TV whenever it deals with females and sex. The potrayal of bisexuality is definitely the best currently (with Glee being of course the utter worse in like the 10 past years). The lead can have romantic feelings from someone of either female or male gender and also sexual attraction and she just does. It is not some PSA. Also as others have mentioned, as with any show, there are underlying deeper themes but unlike others, they do not point them out and hit you over the head with them. They consider you adult and tell their stories targeted towards that.

I think the show was not that good in its first season. Had some serious growing pains, but as the show is now in its 3rd season, it is definitely worthy of a lot of the praise it has been getting. I feel a lot of credit should also be extended to their show runner Emily Andras. Not only in how Lost Girl seems to be much more focused and improved after she took over, but also the amazing way she interacts with fans. Not to mention she comes across as being insanely witty and hilarious which shows in the writting (especially in the one liners Kenzi been having this season).

    ReplyDelete
  60. You really should think of a better way of organizing your polls, because what's stopping fans from voting countless times (after deleting cookies)?

    ReplyDelete
  61. WOWW...Doccubus Army here!!!! Hahaha!! Hey comrads, greetings from Russia)))))

    ReplyDelete
  62. I would say Switched at Birth.Ive never seen deaf or hard of hearing people lead/star in a tv series before. The only other deaf/hard of hearing character I Remeber on tv is Heather on 7th Heaven and she was a minor character.Switched is also doing a all sign launguage episode which I think is a first for tv.Theres been no other tv show I know of spotlighting the deaf community. I love OUAT and like R&I too.

    ReplyDelete
  63. no one is cheating reason Lost Girl is so high is more about someone tweeting a link to this poll

    ReplyDelete
  64. I would say The Walking Dead, along with American Horror Story, introduced a new level of gore allowed on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Not Sure but think Lost Girl maybe winning lol

    ReplyDelete
  66. From this list, I'd have to say The Walking Dead, mainly due to showing what used to be iffy content (ie. extremely gory violence) in what used to be a niche genre (horror/fantasy/sci-fi) in the framework of a shorter season to emphasize stronger quality writing that it is actually outperforming most of the network shows.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Castle may be popular here on this website, but it's no future X-Files or Buffy show. It's been influenced by other shows. It's not an influencer.

    ReplyDelete
  68. LOST GIRL without a doubt is THE. MOST. INFLUENTIAL .SHOW!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yeah. Well, the fans may think it's influential, but it's not reaching enough people for me to think it will do much for LGBI people. To really make a change the show has to do well and people have to know about it. Channels aren't going to air more LGBI stuff if it doesn't bring viewers in. They're about money, not social change.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It's a small show on Syfy, originally from Canada. Not that much viewers compared to most US shows.

    ReplyDelete
  71. @redemptor:disqus We don't use cookies to check for duplicates.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yep, one of the stars of the show tweeted out the link to their 20,000+ lost girl fans :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. disqus_XOueQRY8Xq24 February 2013 at 18:54

influential? well this one is so easy. Lost Girl is a groundbreaking show. That eqauls influential to me. If you haven't seen it, you should, then you'll understand what I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Personally, I think the show had a nice premise, but unfortunately IMO any gains made by the show's message is completely negated by the fandom.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I went with GoT, because the "villain" focus and willingness to kill off all your main "heroes" seems to be influencing so much of not just genre TV but almost everything we see. As well as the critical reception of TV. How successful the model will be long-term remains to be seen, but its influence is definitely felt and far reaching.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That is why it is surprising to me that it is beating so many shows on the poll.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Honestly? I think you need to give TV viewers a little more credit than to assume that a "fandom" of any kind for any show will affect how they view a program. Most viewers (and it is an error to assume they are all gay, we know this isn't so) will never have one single moment of contact in any way shape or form with the fandom, nor necessarily even be aware of its existence in any meaningful manner.

    ReplyDelete
  78. It has made it to a third season, with a lot of guesses about an anticipated 4th, on the strength of a lead LGBT character on mainstream prime time (rather than tucked away as niche). If it can prove that anyone of any demographic can and will accept an LGBT lead, for whom sexual orientation is never even mentioned, then it opens the door to more diversity in television. So your premise that it's not an earner seems in error.

There is a persistent and deeply culturally rooted understanding that lead characters are male, white, straight, at the least. That is the cultural standard for Western TV. I'm seeing shows on this list, including Lost Girl, that bucks the trend (another poster talks about a show featuring deaf characters where it is not a condescending pity-party or trope-fest, it just is) and that is a good thing that has influence on the cultural zeitgeist.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Sorry to sound ignorant but what is Lost Girl even about and what network is it on? I don't think I'd even heard of it until E!'s Watch with Kristen did their Couples tournament and two couples from the show were named often in the comments section of the call for nominations. Plus, the couple that was chosen ended up beating the Glee couple that made it to the final round. Clearly it's something if it's winning this poll too.

    ReplyDelete
  80. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Girl

    ReplyDelete
  81. I agree - that's why I voted for it. I follow a few of the stars on Twitter and very often, Marlee and Constance quote tweet (and sometimes reply in a manner that makes sure all followers see the response and original tweet) people who say that they started taking sign language classes BECAUSE of the show. How is that not influential?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Lost Girl is an addictive series with great characters, great actors/actresses, and a overall story that keeps you coming back for more! This series' daring/groundbreaking material and characters has more than earned it a place among T.V. show greats. OH YEAH!!!! The FAEDOM NATION, DOCCUBUS ARMY, and THE PALMERIST are not to be played with FATS....................just ask E! poll/GLEE fans!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. OMG doccubus army is unstoppable

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think that a large segment of the Lost Girl fanbase is so consumed with labeling and bullying everybody else that any "no big deal" approach from the original creator has been destroyed. I like Teen Wolf and how Danny is a just another guy, super popular and well liked, and his sexuality isn't a theme or issue or concern, it's just Danny. Lost Girl has, unfortunately, lost the high ground on that one and its mainly attributable to a portion of the fans and the producers kowtowing to them. And if it was just on online sites like this one I would agree that mainstream viewers aren't touched, but when a show's Facebook page becomes a war zone that isn't just niche.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Dr. Lauren Lewis:
“Doccubus Army, it has come to my attention that there is another mission on the horizon. I know that our last assignment was a long and hard fought one, but we endured and were able to defeat our numerous adversaries. We did this by sticking together, staying up late, losing sleep, and missing work. This new mission will be no different. We must work together to defeat our opponents. I know that some of us have not fully recovered yet from our last foray, but remember that we are the strongest of fans and will stop at nothing to succeed. So, let us now stand together and fight for our Doccubus and all of the land of Lost Girl. Vote for them and the hope they give to all of their fans. “

    ReplyDelete
  86. well you can not compare the show with the over all (setting, writing, directing, acting etc...) quality of TWD or Game of Thrones. But the way sexuality is approached on screen is a milestone. If it was asked what TV show is the best - I would have answered GoT. I am hardcore fantasy and my favorite show at the moment is LG although I am not doccubus. The actors are great - you really can feel the chemistry of the cast throughout the show. and it really is humouras. The strength of the show is the inter-character development.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I love OUAT (not as much as LG) but I do not have the feeling that they have turned them uspide down. They have given the tales a more adult perspective but not upside down. A milestone would have been if they would have gone back to the roots - to the cruel original stories collected by the brothers grimm - but that would not have been possible in this format.

    ReplyDelete
  88. But it has to start somewhere not to long ago there was no shows like this so u gotta take what u can get. Besides I think the Lost Girl following maybe few in numbers but very strong in their loyalty and love for the show and I think thats makes them very formidable.

    ReplyDelete
  89. LoL I think the specialty of the doccubus army are the polls xD

    ReplyDelete
  90. Lost Girl is not an American Show, though it is adored here and they really love their American fans. Lost Girl is a Canadian show, filmed and produced in Canada for Showcase.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'm going with none at this point because for me it's far too soon to see if any of these will be influential or just a fad. However, The Walking Dead breaking ratings records right and left has made it one to watch (influence and ratings wise - I hated season 1 of the actual show and then dropped it.) The success of Arrow has also influenced the CW to concentrate more on genre shows than teen girl romances so it is pretty influential thus far. Although I guess you could also say the the failures of teen soaps has been just as influential.

  92. Supernatural has been my favorite show for a very long time, but even I would not say it has been influential on other shows. It hasn't had the ratings impact or the critical fanfare that usually makes a show influential. To be honest though I wish more shows were influenced by SPN's pacing, meaning that questions are answered continuously while new questions are asked. Many shows drown in their glacial reveals and endless unanswered questions.

  93. Though I'm a huge fan of Once, my vote goes to Lost Girl.

Because it is as everyone has said, groundbreaking in what it does. It's witty, it's fantastical, even campy at times. It's a bit like Xena and Buffy all rollicked up in a delicious way. It also doesn't fall into the trap of the common and done to death lesbian/etc tropes.

It's a sexy show, and it flaunts it without threading into the territory of raciness. I can appreciate that, and judging from the decent numbers (and this poll) of viewers watching, so can a lot of other people.

  94. Definitely, first season is great, second season slouched somewhat in the middle. Third so far is getting to be my favorite the way it's been shaping up. Especially with the addition of Rachel Skarsten (from the short-lived Birds of Prey series)

  95. lost girl is the most wonderful TV shows which shows the lifestyles of modern society, syfy, romance, and drama. The love between bnisexual and homosexual is emphasized and it has shown that everyone is treated equal in the Fae world, no discrimination is shown. Anna and Zoie has played the role of Bo and Lauren quite well and the love between each other is breathtaking. Each episodes which is shown is worth watching. This show has also open the gateway for the younger audience to come open with their relationships and I hope it will change the mentality of people around the world
The other supporting cast Dyson, Tasmin, Kenzie, Trick also plays an important as they are the one who is keeping and supporting Bo with her life and it seems like that everyone love each other, and when there is a need everyone gets united. That is the world should be , if it can happen. The fantasy of the story is also one of the best script as it deals with all the methodology, creatures and the most funny part which I found was that the characters are using modern technology to communicate, like Iphone, mobile and modern medical equipment and the jokes at times.

It also shows that human can be a nice creature in terms of the dedication towards other creatures like Lauren is the dedicated doctor, Kenzie in Bo's life, treating her that she is someone in the society. I would salute the writer of the Lost girl and I hope that they would have more seasons in future. best of luck

  105. I take "Influential" to mean 'having an effect on the industry' I don't see any shows in this list that I would count as influential. There are shows that I love and thing are fabulous...but influential?

    ReplyDelete
  106. I know that. I just meant they have a different approach to sex/sexuality/how much you can show on tv than (some) American shows. Canada seems to be less uptight about that sort of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Some one the shows listed should not even be.. listed! once upon a time? Srsly.
My vote will go to game of thrones.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I'd go for Lost Girl. It's too influential for me to even follow on polls like this. I usually only watch but not to the point of digging about the show online, reading the show's lengthy discussion about everything and joining polls to support it. So, this is enough reason why this show for me is influential. It makes me do things I don't normally do.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Bunk. Or am I just "bullying" you (please, for those who have dealt with the real thing, don't diminish that bloody word for cheap points scoring over a TV show, it makes your argument absurd from the get go). You cannot compare a low-tier ensemble character like Danny to a lead character - the latter is unprecedented in mainstream.

And again - most viewers will never interact with the fandom in any way. Nor is the production company "kow-towing" to anyone - they respond to numbers and mass feedback. You don't spend that kind of money on a show otherwise - You have to accept the television is a commercial venture as well as a creative one, and it exists for the purposes of delivering advertising to viewers. However the actors, crew and showrunners may view it, it all always comes down to bucks. And the bucks so far are showing positive for an LGBT pairing.

The "war" I have seen tends to be, on the FB page, thinly veiled or open homophobia (to the point where the powers that be need to step in because that *IS* bad for business), aggressive ideation towards one of the gay characters, and occasional ad hominem to the actor who plays her.

Now, you are trying to invoke a "gay mafia" type argument, while engaging in a little light silencing. No chance.

Yes, LGBT fans tend to be vocal and well organised (although not all Lost Girl fans are LGBT, not all Doccubus fans are LGBT, not all Vex fans are into kink and all the other myriad demographics presented). But then we've had to be. That you would invoke a minor character who was in about half of the Teen Wolf eps filmed so far to try and demonstrate any degree of parity tells me that you really don't understand the point at all.

  110. You are totally right. All Lost Girl conversations are such positive experiences for fans and social media followers. No one is ever accused of anything without grounds and all fans are open-minded, unbiased, and really nice people. Thank goodness I'm wrong.

  111. Complete Lost Girl - even as a happily married woman for 13 years, I can tell you that the relationship aspect of the show between Lauren and Bo is refreshing to see. There are no labels, no stereotypes and no emphasis in any way on it being two woman leading the charge. Strong female leads is refreshing, confident women who make no apologies is refreshing and new to US TV. The way they handle sex ans sexuality is refreshing and with no apology....it isn't even that shocking, compared to shows like Shameless, Californication, Banshee and others (all that I love to watch as well). The chemistry between the entire cast is fantastic, but, Anna and Zoie pull it off like nobodies business and the actress who portrays Kenzie is phenom when it comes to her one liners...I love the blend of fantasy with drama and comedy and love. Overall, it is something new, different, refreshing and encouraging - the focus of equality is amazing. I really appreciate that there are no labels what-so-ever like you see in other shows. I'm a huge fantasy/sci-fi fan and to see one of this caliber is new to US TV, I wish more people would check it out and keep an open mind to the beauty of love - in whatever shape it comes in.

  112. Lost Girl of course! Amazing and twist plot ( You never know what will be going on ), a lot of action, great characters and the unusual, wonderful, moving relationship ( Doccubus ) between two beautiful women which is out of this world! Chamistry like that doesn't have any Tv shows! Homosexual love is shown in a beautiful way. I LOVE IT !! I must say that I am addicted ;) And season 3?...no words! ♥

  121. Lost Girl has everything and more!!! Doccubus army lets do this =)

    ReplyDelete
  122. The most amazing aspect of Lost Girl is the portrayal of the relationships are Genuine,Real and Equal and that it resonates with people. And that love is not defined by gender nor sexuality.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I agree the niche has been around but neglected. Castle has claimed that for its own.

    ReplyDelete
  124. for me I thought 'influential' means 'having an impact in your own life personally', and 'affecting your daily life and your world view'. And by that definition, Suits, Parenthood, Sherlock, Person of Interest, Rizzoli and ISles, Switched At Birth and Once Upon a Time are influential for me.

    ReplyDelete
  125. you welcome. I love to make comments in various web pages, if it is user friendly that is not many technical jargon or conditions.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I would wait for the summer poll, as long as you have lost girl I will be :) to vote.

  127. Most influential at the moment, I would have to say Game of Thrones/Walking Dead, but at the same time, I feel Game of Thrones is definitely benefiting from the coattails of Peter Jackson's adaptations of the Lord of the Rings, as well as the success of HBO's Rome, so I would give Walking Dead dibs on the current pop culture crown (Walking Dead also benefits from having longer seasons than Game of Thrones, which allows for sustained relevance throughout the year).

Having said that, Canada's Lost Girl has all the makings of a cult favorite along the lines of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While I think it is regrettable to a certain extent that the show is small and relatively unknown in mass media, I think the potential of a show like Lost Girl will manifest in the long term as opposed to the short. I do not expect Lost Girl to ever achieve the mass viewership that shows like Game of Thrones or Walking Dead have managed (though I do anticipate season 4 will show a substantial rise), but I think it will be part of a restructured approach to same-sex relationships and female friendships on television in the next ten or so years, a role in which it will be joined by True Blood, Girls, and Rizzoli & Isles. Allow me also to say, the sheer campy-ness of some of these are an absolute joy.

What I will say with all certainty, is that I am wholeheartedly enjoying many of the recent developments in TV, which are definitely benefiting from a shift in focus to cable networks like HBO, AMC, Showtime, and Showcase. Good job pop culture. Good job.
