Person Of Interest - Season 2 - Is Person Of Interest Going To War?

So I'll admit upfront that this article will be purely some speculation on my part or perhaps more along the lines of what I'd wish would happen. Ever since my youth I have had a fascination with china, it's been one of the fastest growing economies in the last three decades. Has an enormous army and intelligence force to boot. And sooner or later I expect there will be a conflict with China, perhaps over oil perhaps over some very other things like the fact they are still one of the few Communist nations out there. But that is in the real world, I wanted to talk about China in the world of fiction. Or more specifically in the world of Person of Interest.

As it all began last season when a piece or knowledge of the Machine was found in China. Which first of all leaves me with a question I can not answer, as seen in "Reckoning", why did Finch sell knowledge of the Machine to the Chinese? And was it really Finch? The old man seemed to believe so. The only reason I can think of is that Finch was afraid the Machine would eventually be breached and abused by the US Government and did this as additional security measure. Making sure neither side ever would have the advantage over the other. It picked up again a few months ago when in the episode "C.O.D." mention was made that China has a great intelligence agency and that they were operating on American soil. At first glance I never took notice at what was seemingly a throw away mention to add realism since they know about the Machine, but then "Reckoning" came. The older man in the Chinese hospital mentioned Stanton worked for the 'Old Gods' and he worked for the 'New Gods'. The analogy was simple, the United States government represented the 'Old Gods' and the Chinese government the 'New Gods'. When the kicker came and Stanton uploaded some kind of virus in US Intelligence database it became clear to me some kind of incursion was coming from China.

Though I am not certain whether it's a full scale war, which is unlikely, or more along the lines of intelligence operations by Chinese agents. The following episode "One Percent" seemed to hint at the latter, as the Machine itself showed signs of being compromised by the virus. Since the Machine's job is to detect threats to the security of the United States I can only be certain something big is coming.

Thanks for reading and I'd like to hear what you think of my theory!

I have to disagree with your interpretation of what the "old gods" mean. To me it meant the current world as we know it or rather intelligence agencies and governments. The guy who recruit Stanton didn't seem to be part of Chinese intelligence, he seemed to be part of something different.

  3. Completely agreed. Didn't the guy even say that he wasn't working for the Chinese?

  4. i agree with that too the old gods are the government sponsored intelligence agencies and operations, the new gods would be private corporations sponsored intelligence agencies and operations...

  5. I don't think Finch did any such thing. I don't think he feels any need to get involved in affairs of state and make sure the government behaves itself. His one and only priority is protecting people. (And keeping this in mind, I think that, if he ever did feel the need to work with governments, China's government is the very LAST one he'd ever get involved with, considering its increasingly egregious record of human rights abuses!)

  6. Hey people the fans of the community of Person of Interest Brasil (http://www.facebook.com/groups/personofinterestbr/) find out what the blue screens of the last episode means. They are text, the first talk about the scene of Somnambulism of Macbeth of William Sheakspeare, the second blue screen have a text about bioterrorism from this site National Institutes of Health's (link: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/biodefenseandbioterrorism.html) and the third blue screen have a text about Anthrax in the same page of National Institutes of Health (link: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/anthrax.html). So I don't know the theory of Pascal is right, but one think is worth to wait, a big war.

  7. He doesn't work for the Chinese, for all we know he found out about Kara and flew into China to get her, after all she is a very valuable asset to him. As for Finch's name, that can go in so many directions. Personally I think our characters are going to tie in together in the season finale, such as Kara and Snow aren't really dead and that they are on a mission to find Finch. Also, I know POI mentioned the return of Root, I believe either Root with work with Snow/Kara or Finch will be forced to seek out her help since she holds the technical skills to assist him, plus he can give her the answers she wants in regards to the machine. Otherwise, if they did kill Kara/Snow off, such a waste, they both have a lot that they can bring in terms of story telling. The key though with this show is the characters tie together and people you think are dead, unless you see them dead, might not be dead such as Nathan could be alive.

  8. Remember Finch was injured. He had spinal fusion surgery 1-2 years ago. We still don't know why. But I'm thinking this is part of the reason the Chinese got hold of the laptop.

I believe the laptop wasn't sold, it was stolen. By saying it was sold, it put a glossy cover on the situation and made the mission far more believable for Snow, Corwin, Stanton, and Reese. After Ingram was killed - possibly after having followed a person of interest, Finch may have been attacked, tortured, kidnapped, etc. He would have given away that laptop to secure his release, when in fact the real Machine was safe and well in the US

    That's my thinking

I completely disagree about Snow and Stanton. For one, Annie Parisse is starring in a show on a rival network, the other is if Snow and Stanton were working together and faking their deaths then their final scene would have been in front of someone like Reese so there would be a point to faking their deaths. Otherwise the scene was just there for the benefit of the audience and frankly it would be too cheesy. Stanton has finish what she's supposed to do.

What I see in the future is either Root and Pierce working together or Root and British guy who recruited Stanton.

  11. Yeah I'm pretty sure the fact that the FBI guy told Carter at the end of the episode that they found the bodies, that it pretty much means they're both dead. :)

  12. regardless the creator did say that if you havn't seen the characters die, they may not be dead. Now we never saw their bodies, but who knows. Maybe killing them will allow them to further this arc.
