I find the actual premise interesting, but it is being handled with such a heavy hand that it is almost un-watchable to me.
The dialog on the show within the show Cult is just TERRIBLE! It's like they are trying to show that it is not "reality" by making the acting over-the-top and the dialog ultra-cheesey. The problem I have is who would watch that and how would a show that bad become a cult hit? ..
The 'reality' side of the show is very contrived and not much more believable.. It was almost comical how much they ignored how things should be to add some heightened drama. Not limited to the crime scene at Nate's being all kinds of wrong with the detectives leaving all the evidence in the room for Jeff to find later, or interviewing him in the room of the crime scene itself... All of the pause and glare predatory looks into the camera by people in the background or walking by conveniently directly in frame were too much for me. And seriously, how many times do they have to beat the viewer over the head that the 3-D glasses might jut be a clue?.
The pilot did tick most of the boxes that a pilot needs to I guess, but despite the series being very complex in theory, it all felt very obvious and shallow to me. I voted Okay in the end, but would give it a "C-" at best.
Kinda felt like a really unfunny, unexciting, badly written version of a Supernatural meta episode. I really needed Trickster in there being snarky at the end instead finding out the really bad at her job cop was part of the conspiracy. It needs to be a really complex idea and slickness isn't going to cover up that the show just isn't that good. And you've got your best villain "inside" the show where the dialogue and acting are so bad (I think it is supposed to be intentional?). I might give episode 2 a try for Alaric's sake, but definitely so-so.
PS. I'm still ROFL at the idea that the CW would pay for all those ads. Ha.
hmmm somewhere between OK and Poor undecided on wheather i will watch episode 2 the concept intrigues me but the dialogue/acting/writing/characters are weak
And you're asking me?????? Um, I know I've seen you around SPN, but I don't know what else you watch. I will say it had a lot of visual elements that remind me of SPN. Plus, a certain self-awareness built into the plot. It had more of a darker thriller feel than most CW shows. I'm not sure a love triangle is coming :). The show within a show is (I think) purposefully acted poorly, so poor Jo is painful to watch. It has an interesting concept and if they can make it complex enough and stay on the intellectual side instead of the melodrama side, it might get better. Right now it is too slick and not smart enough to put enough ambiguity into the mystery to justify how serious serious it is.
If you like CW shows and you like crime thrillers, watch it. If you already are burnt out on cliche melodrama cult shows by the first few episodes of the Following, save your time.
I thought it was decent. The characters were colorful and interesting, the premise intriguing. They do need to cut back on the anvil tossing writing and there are far too many crime shows out there for me to buy this crime scene. They didn't even bag the missing guy's phone. Huh? Didn't look at the notebook? However I am into the plot significantly enough to give it some time to work out the bugs. Here's hoping it has a definite ending this season though because I can't see this becoming a huge hit for the CW, although I certainly hope it is.
Definitely try it. It is dark and very confusing with occasionally bad writing but it's interesting. Give it a try and let me know what you think. I will certainly give it another 2-3 episodes at minimum.
Liked it. Had a few minor burps.(Worst looking fake pizza ever) When I saw Andrew Leeds in the credits I thought he would be a great bad guy. He's so good in Bones as the ever creepy Pelant. They made him a good guy. (So far.)
I'm in until something makes me not want to watch.
I feel basically the same way. It's definitely a step up from the awful Emily Owens and it had enough good to engage me so I can overlook the aspects that need work.
I'm itching to watch this (non-U.S. viewer here), although I'm far from optimistic about its survival chances. I just hope people give the show a chance beyond its pilot episode, which was apparently ripped to shreds by many critics, even described as the worst pilot of the season. I think quite a few shows have weak pilots and improve in subsequent episodes (we have to remember that the pilot is written months before the rest of the series, among other things), but the audience usually doesn't stick around and wait to see if they get better.
I wouldn't say it was the worst pilot of the season but there are a ton of kinks that need to be worked out. I'm going down with this ship. I did it for Sarah Michelle Gellar in Ringer and I'll do it for Matt Davis. I wanted this show to make it to show the CW that everything doesn't have to be love triangles, parties and hipster douche music and I love them for trying but I'm a realist if nothing else so I hope the "season" finale is wrapped up in a pretty little bow.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Definitely the best pilot of the season
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately in Russia it is impossible to see. Give the download link please.
ReplyDeletewow I love it. More than I expected.

ReplyDeleteGah, I wish I could watch it. Too bad about the mixed reviews though. I hoped it would be better, guess I'll have to wait and see!

ReplyDeleteAWESOME! I think it may be one of my new favorite shows. I love these type of mystery suspense puzzle like shows. Can't wait 'til ep 2!
ReplyDeleteI have absolutely nothing to do. Should I watch this?

My thought was it would be too much like The Following. But I like The Following and since this is dark show I'll check it out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the help!
