    Late 1990's/Early 2000's (1995-2004). Why ? HBO (well, I only watched SFU, I have to catch-up the others, but just for SFU the late 90's win), and of course, for me, X-Files. I'd put Buffy as well, maybe.

    It's a toss up between the last two. The explosion of cable dramas make this as the best era of television, the first is simply about HBO (The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Oz, Deadwood) while in the latter other cables network came through as the home of great dramas (AMC, Showtime, FX) but nonetheless HBO lost a lot of his edge. So yeah, it's tough.

    It all really depends like for the main networks then the late 90s/early 00s for the cable channels then everything since the Sopranos begun.

    My family bought our first TV in 1952, and I've been watching ever since. The quality keeps getting better and better. The picture is better. The actors are held to a higher standard. The action is realistic. The stories are more respectful of their audience. The only thing that has gone downhill is TV news, which has not benefitted from the 24-hour format.

    I chose 2005 and on.

    Gilmore Girls, X-Files, Xena, Freinds, Alias, Dark Angel, Charmed, The Pretender, Sabrina, Six Feet Under, Roswell, One Tree Hill started then and so on and so on.

    In the late 90'early 2000 we had some great shows,ER, Alias, Farscape, Sopranos, The Wire, Stargate SG1 and i'm sure i could list more if my brain had more coffee.No doubt those shows led the way,they set the bar a little higher for what was to come,thanks in no small part to the viewers! I have to go with the late 90's..

    Late 2000's to present. We have shows like Lost, Battlestar just starting that had surfaced, with the first to really mark a change in being able to have heavy thought provoking serialized television! It brought us more of it with shows like Dexter, Fringe, Boardwalk Empire, the Sapranos, Homeland, Once Upon A Time, True Blood, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, ect.

    We can now get novel-length and beyond material and really see character evolutions on film in a way we never have before.

    Didn't we have Alias, and BG in the late 90 early 2000? Aw Hell,did i vote for the wrong year,ha! I know i left out so many oh well.*facepalm*

    I mean for my vote with was late 2000's (because I like more shows now, than then but there are surley some late 90's early 2000's that I liked) I was just saying I wish I could have a bigger time period/era to chose from!

    Yep,i know what you meant,but just thinking of what came later on made me think twice,especially Fringe! It would have been perfect if it was from the late 90's to present.That was the second coming of television,imo of course.

    What are you talking about here? The quality of the picture, effects? Or the quality of actual storytelling - the best shows?


    If it's the latter, I'd go with Late 1990's/Early 2000's.


    If it's the former, it's always going to be current - with new technology.

    Fringe is on it's fifth and final season... so clearly it started in 2008. A few years out of the previous era bracket.

    I'd also say Late 2000's/present (2005-present) The golden age 24, Lost, Smallville, Desperate Housewives, TAHM, Grey's Anatomy and House.

    Even though some of my favourite shows are either in the "Late 1990's/Early 2000's" and " Late 2000's/present" I actually voted for "Late 1980's/Early 1990's (1986-1994)". There is something about the classics when I was growing up (21Jumpstreet, Moonlighting, Who's the Boss, Golden Girls, Full House, Saved by the Bell etc etc etc. And even Friends falls in that that category).

    Having said that there's has always been good TV that would qualify ANY era as great, so this was actually very hard...

    The Present. I've only lived 2 decades though and haven't seen much older shows. I've never had more shows to watch though. This year 20, between 8pm-11pm Sun-Fri on the main channels - CBS, NBC, ABC, and CW.

    I love tv from all eras and they all have different ideas and ways of filming to offer to a modern audience. Some shows from the 50s are just as funny now whereas some from more recent years can feel so much more dated. But the reason I would chose now or the era shortly before now is because there are so many more channels that put on original programming or even rerun classics and that the world, at least the US, has started to show television from other countries with greater frequency than in years past.

    Agreed. I also think age has a lot to do with it. I must be about the same age as you because I also voted this. I am nostalgic for all those classics when I grew up even though I became more entrenched in TV in the late 1990' - early 2000's, which is getting a lot of comment love. I think it would be interesting to see how many people picked the era of their childhood/teen years.

    I'm 27 going on 28... and yeah, I undoubtedly believe nostalgia plays a HUGE factor. Did I learn to appreciate shows more after I hit my later teens? Absolutely... but I never would have watched TV if I hadn't fallen in love with the the shows I watched as a kid.
