When I first started taking notice to episode amounts per season it was at 24 so 24 is always the number that sticks in my head that a season should have.
I voted for 24+ because who doesnt want more episodes of their favourite shows? However I think it depends on the show itself. I'd say netork tv shows could do with adding more episodes per season to fill the ridiculously long season especially since there is very little to watch over the summer. But high costs of production, writers, actors and so on have made long seasons impossible so anywhere between 22 and 26 seems reasonable and about all one can ask for.
Same. Procedural shows/comedies with not enough episodes doesn't give them enough time to properly develop the characters, and especially for procedurals where a lot of the time goes to the case of the week. As for serialized dramas, too many episodes can hurt them too because there's bound to be lots of filler episodes which slows the pace, and can hurt the entire season.
Well for the shows I love, as many as I can get. I went with the supernatural average if 22 but I will be happy with more. I find anything under 20 too short
Selfishly speaking, I always want more than 24 episodes of my favorite series (who doesn't?), but the quality of itself suffers a lot..and I hate fillers so much. So I think the miniseries or the format 12/13 episodes is the best thing. At least I'm completely satisfied at the end.
I'm going to be shameless and say 52. Do I understand how impossible that would be in reality? Sure. Do I think actors should get to have vacation time etc. like everybody else? Absolutely. But in my own little utopia I want one episode per week.
Voted 21-23 episodes for comedies - although I do like round counts like 20 or better yet, 24.
Producing too many episodes would irrevocably impair the quality of the programs. And besides, quality storytelling needs breaks, each season should feel like a chapter.
I usually dislike uneven numbers, except 13-episode orders, for some reason (but 11 or 17, yuk).
And I usually like when shows keep the same episode count throughout the season. E.g : I'm not a fan of what Showtime did with The Big C : 13 episodes, then another 13, then 10, to finish this year with 4-hour long episodes. Of course the joy that this show is still on the air prevails, and if it was a hit there wouldn't be order shrinkages, but still.
I agree with otheres that 12-13 seems to work better for serialized dramas. This way, they're leaner, meaner and more focused on the plot, without unnecessary filler episodes. (Although, there are exceptions - Nikita is serialized, has 22 episodes per season, and uses them all beautifully without little in the way of filler material.)
I've had the idea that serialized shows with 22-episode seasons should splice the season into two halves, with each of them being a separate arc. Say, air 9 episodes without breaks (which is better for viewers to follow the plot) in the beginning, have a loooong hiatus (like Revolution currently) to eliminate the need for further breaks, and then air the remaining 13 episodes - again, in one block. Basically, treat the second half of the season like a midseason replacement show. Since it's a new arc, you won't lose viewers in the long hiatus - they won't need to keep track.
I would take an episode a week all year round for some of my shows but I'm greedy like that :-) I agree some shows like Dexter, homeland etc would be hurt by 22 episode seasons, but I could never handle less than 22 for say Castle
There is no right answer to this. It depends entirely on the show that is being made and what makes sense for the format. For instance, there a lot of show that do a great job with 12-13 episodes: Homeland, Dexter, etc., But Game Of Thrones chooses to do 10 episodes instead because the of various reasons. Then you can see a procedural show like Person Of Interest that is designed to sustain a much longer season. I voted for 12-13 a year because I think you can do the best work with a short order like that but at the same time, it's not so short that you are left wanting for more.
This poll really needs an "Other" option. I pick none of the above. My official vote is "As many as the story needs."
Some series (Prison Break and Lost for example) should start with a finite order...just enough episodes to tell a complete and satisfying story without having to vamp episodes 'so the network can keep the show going for 5 seasons if it wants.'
Some series work wonderfully in they typical open ended approach. 22 eps per season and options for more seasons.
I loved that ABC was willing to take a shot with The River - a 9 episode order of a very niche genre...it was different and fun. The approach they took left me satisfied at the end of the run instead of feeling like the rug got yanked from under me.
I prefer shorter seasons above longer seasons. Obviously for my favorite shows this is not pleasant because I'd get less episodes, but I just cannot stand filler episodes. The main reason I watch shows is for their overarching storyline so when it's just focused to that (= cable shows) that's highly preferable for me. My least favorite episodes of Lost and Fringe for example (I saw a user use theser perfect examples before) were the filler episodes.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
it depends.
ReplyDeleteprocedural shows and comedies: 22-24, serialized dramas: 10-13
10-16 (J-Drama and cable tv standard I guess)

ReplyDeleteYeah, same.
ReplyDeleteYeah girl!!! Season 2 of Greys was epic, 24+ it is :)

ReplyDeleteI am not a girl..... :p

For Dramas definitely 12-13, for Sitcoms I don't mind if there are 20+
ReplyDeleteCable solution, 12-13.

ReplyDeleteIt really does depend on what the show is. For serialised stories then a season of 12-13 episodes is ideal, for procedurals then 22-24 is perfect.
ReplyDeleteGreat poll !
ReplyDeleteVoted 12-13 episodes for dramas / dramedies.

ReplyDeleteI agree with your logic that there should be a lot more for comedies but I think it's more 22-27 (depending) for comedies and 10-16 for dramas.
ReplyDeleteI kind of liked what Switched at Birth did with 32 in the first season.

ReplyDelete21 episode seasons are best.
ReplyDelete22 for comedies and 13 for dramas, I really do think some shows could benefit by having shorter seasons.
ReplyDeleteI would like some shows to have 15 episodes, but yes it all depends on the show...
