Supernatural - Song-to-Scene - 1G - Poll
6 Jan 2013
Polls SupernaturalIt was a set of big winners today with Rock of Ages getting 81% and Beautiful Loser, Highway to Hell, and Cold as Ice each at 70%. Should be interesting when they go against each other next round. Today we have a juggernaut of a song-to-scene, one that could win it all. Can't wait to see how it compares to Renegade, Back in Black, and Wanted Dead or Alive, choices that received over 90% of their votes. In other news, this is the last day to nominate your ideal Supernatural playlist of songs that have not been heard on SPN before. I think the song-to-scene contest will end on the day of the midseason premiere but if I miscalculated, I will post the suggestions when this contest ends. If not I will do something with them during the in-season spring hiatus. Anyway, happy voting!

Sorry I was AWOL on the comments yesterday. Family stuff interfered.
ReplyDelete1. O Death - There isn't much to say about this one except - perfection! As for Fell on Black Days, it is decent but it goes against one of the best song-to-scene choices in all of TV, not just Supernatural.
2. Space Oddity - To be honest, I almost said neither with this one but I'm already saying it with the next poll. I don't think either of these are particularly strong in lyrics although they both set the mood. Turn into Earth has one lyric, "Ah," repeatedly. They could have saved their money and created a similar riff for this scene in-house. In the end I decided to give Space Oddity the nudge simply because as that point of the story Dean still thought they were dealing with aliens so I guess the space theme kind of fits. Also the beginning of it could fit if you try. For instance, he's talking to RoboSam when they sing "Ground Control to Major Tom." Mostly though I just think someone on Supernatural really likes this song and wanted to hear it. Thankfully, neither of them should have a prayer against O Death. Better one of them than a really good song-to-scene.
3. Neither - You Shook Me All Night Long only fits half the song and even then it could have been any sex song. Long, Long Way From Home could have been a good season 5 song if they had played it in any of the episodes that had to do with destiny. As it is, the song is all backwards. Truman High, Home of the Bombers, doesn't look like leaving a small town for New York City to me. Even the title doesn't make sense. They don't have a home except Baby.
4. Road to Nowhere - When I first looked at these choices, I thought Simple Man, no question. Then I looked at both clips….a lot. Over and over again with the video on one side and the lyrics on the other. In the end, Road to Nowhere wins out. Just like love songs, I am not apt to vote for a traveling song just because they are driving. There are far too many of them but these lyrics are pitch perfect. It comes in the first episode with flashbacks to the brothers' childhood and right after Sam is nostalgic for an innocent past. This is what plays: "I was looking back on my life / And all the things I've done to me / I'm still looking for the answers / And I'm still searching for the key / The road to nowhere leads to me."
Simple Man is another time like Beautiful Loser where I think I mix the phenomenal video editing with the song-to-scene. I love this montage a lot, but the words of the song don't fight. With a little tighter sound editing it could have been compelling but they cut in weird places and used the wrong verses. The more I watch this scene the less I think it's a superior song-to-scene fit. Good maybe, and definitely enough to beat many of these choices today. Just not Road to Nowhere.
1. O Death
ReplyDelete2. Space Oddity
3. You Shook Me All Night Long
4. Simple Man
1) O Death I will be surprised if this winds up with less than 95% of the vote. For
ReplyDelete....me this scene is perfection....from everyone on staff. The car, the actor, the song, and
....the arrangement. I am going to be in such trouble as this contest goes on...I need to
....find that coin flip website again.
2) I need to think about this one while I look at the others. Okay, I'm going to go with
....Space Oddity. Hmmm....I want to say Space Oddity because until the middle of this
....scene we believed this was an alien abduction episode. Even the fairy's entrance
....implied alien abduction. No...I am definitely going to pick Space Oddity
....because as much as I liked the Turn into Earth scene it was one of those where
....almost any song could be playing.
3) Long Long Way from Home - just worked better for me. I don't really have a
....long winded explanation.
4) Had to stop myself from reacting to how much I like the song Simple Man and thing
....about the song and scene together. Despite that I picked Simple Man. Road
....to Nowhere worked but didn't mean as much to the scene for me.
I love this hiatus poll! It forces you to think. O Death has to be the perfect song to scene ever.
ReplyDeleteO Death. Not much to say here. it fits the scene perfectly like the Knight Rider theme for Sam/Kitt..
ReplyDeleteX
Space Oddity.
I thought it was pertinent enough because the writers were tying to make us believe the story was about aliens and well I suppose fairies are an alien race too if not from space.
For that fact we ourselves are space oddities clinging onto a rotating rock as it's flying through space!

Long Long Way From Home.
I love this song and I loved that episode ( apart from the bad casting and characterization of teen Dean ).
I see the song as being a metaphor, that the brothers are a long long way from home, in the sense of home being a life like everyone else has, a house, school, friends, etc although I feel it was aimed more at Sam as he's the one in that episode who had hopes for a future different from the life he was living then.
X
Road To Nowhere.
This could be a theme song for the show as the brothers although always roaring around the countryside in the Impala are essentially on the road to nowhere especially at that moment.
They have no true destination and the road to nowhere essentially ends up leading to Sam and Dean, for they are the big players in the upcoming Destiny reveal.
I don't think Simple Man particularly suits the scenes. Sam and Dean are certainly not simple men, they are extremely complicated men and being separated from each other wasn't the way to thier personal satisfaction.
Anyway I dislike that whole episode so even more reason to vote for RTN. :)
O death!! Couldn't have used a better so g
ReplyDeleteO Death..PERFECT
ReplyDeleteSpace Oddity, I loved the song with Dean being attacked by "space alien" with nipples"
You Shook Me All Night Long, this one was the hard one, don't really care for either scene or song. And has nothing to do with contest and is just me on my soapbox, but I really did not like the way Dean was portrayed as teen. Colin as Sam was awesome.
Simple Man could not be further from the truth, but for me this is a song that is showing how far from Simple they really are and that is the point.
1. O Death - perfect!
ReplyDelete2. End up voting for Space Oddity and don't konw why.
3. You Shook Me All Night Long, just works for me better but i don't realy care wich one song wins. Long, Long Way from Home if not Good God Yall opening i would not realized that song was used in Superntural until this poll....so if i can't remember that song in After School Special and where she was used, that means for me, song don't fits.
4. Road to Nowher. For me fits better.
I am going to have a lot of trouble too when we get to the third round and everything actually is a good song-to-scene fit. You might have to share that site link.
ReplyDeleteI am really enjoying this contest too because it is a little different than we are used to. It's nice to go beyond just favorites sometimes.
ReplyDeleteHa! I cannot get past the bad acting and out-of-character Dean when it comes to After School Special. It is in my top 10 worst episodes of Supernatural because of it.
ReplyDeleteI actually had to look where Long, Long Way from Home was all three times when I was putting together this poll - when it was nominated, when I was doing the descriptions, and when I was finding the videos. Then when I went to vote in this poll I had to look it up again. Let's just say that for some reason this song-to-scene makes absolutely no impression on me ever.
ReplyDeleteColin Ford was the only saving grace in After School Special for me.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. In fact I thought it was created for the show at first.
