Yesterday was a great day to be the Impala. She won every one of her polls, meaning it will be Impala vs Impala next round. Back in Back, her unofficial theme song, took the most votes with 92%. Others going to round 2 are Crossroad Blues (53% and the only non-Impala winner), Born to be Wild (68%), and Smoke on the Water (60%). Curses all around for the poll rankings today. I believe there are 4 strong song-to-scene choices in these polls and 4 poor ones. Unfortunately all 4 good ones are against each other. Sometimes I think Fate is messing with me. Oh well. At least next round's choices will be super easy.
Below are links for which scenes are in the contest (Contest Basics), a bracket to see which ones are coming up next, and videos for the scenes in today's polls. I've also included the nomination form for songs you'd like to hear on Supernatural. Nominations will be open for another 3 days so voice your choice. As always, happy voting.

The song-to-scene contest is not a popularity contest per se. It is about which song best fits which scene in tone and lyrics. Unlike a favorite song or favorite scene contest, you could very well end up voting for a song and/or scene you don't like simply because it matches the best. Ideally we are looking for a scene in which no other song could come even close to being as perfect. We are looking for a song that could not be played in many different scenes in the series. That one combination where the song and scene feel like they were completely in sync. So think on your vast music knowledge and if you can think of several songs that would work in the scene, toss that choice out. If you can think of several places where the song would work just as well or better in the series, toss that choice out too. This contest only works if we let our episode and music prejudices go for 3 weeks.
Also previouslies, outtakes, gag reels, promos, etc. are NOT scenes and therefore do NOT count. That cuts out Carry On Wayward Son completely, which has only been in the previouslies, the outtake of Jensen dancing to Eye of the Tiger (only the 30 seconds that were actually in the episode count), and the first part of Foreplay/Long Time, which started as a previously and segued into about 45 seconds of the actual episode.

Gonna have to think about #3 and come back. Both were utterly perfect with Nancy Sinatra and Crowley sharing varying degrees of sleaze and Leo and Kate just missing a few headless bodies.
ReplyDeleteI'm still crying from the Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas clip.
ReplyDeleteDo you think that sometimes a song can be too on the nose? That's how I feel about Ready to Love. I'm with you that it makes you think of all the other songs that could be there. But also, the lyric is a smidgen too graphic for the sex scene they are showing, which always struck me as a tender scene for Dean and not his usual ready love. Interestingly enough, I don't feel the same about Don't Fear the Reaper.
ReplyDeleteNot quite sure what you mean since the song to me is about a man who has had a hard and bitter life but is now ready to commit to the hard work of loving someone and wants his lover to stay. If anything, I think it is too romantic and long term for his "the world is about to end" sex in desperate times, one night stand with Anna.
ReplyDeleteLyrics courtesy of lyricsmode :
Walkin' down this rocky road
Wondering where my life is leadin'
Rollin' on to the bitter end
Finding out along the way
What it takes to keep love living
You should know how it feels, my friend
Ooh, I want you to stay
Ooh, I want you today
I'm ready for love
Oh baby, I'm ready for love
Oh baby, I'm ready for love
Ready for your love
Now I'm on my feet again
Better things are bound to happen
All my dues surely must be paid
Many miles and many tears
Times were hard but now they're changing
You should know that I'm not afraid
Ooh, I want you to stay
Ooh, I want you today
I had the opposite problem because I don't see either of them as being song-to-scene matches. I do agree however that Dean and Anna were the scene's Jack and Rose. I also think that scene in the trailer was pure comedy gold, one of the best Crowley scenes of them all.
ReplyDeleteIt is very touching that's for sure. It's one of the reasons why when I finally get someone to try just one episode of Supernatural, I always make it this one. It is a little bit of everything that makes SPN into 42 glorious minutes.
ReplyDeleteI think it is really only the words in the refrain "ready to love" juxtaposed with the...uh...urm...direct action of the scene. Maybe my mind is too literal, but the mental image I get isn't what the rest of the song or the scene is about. It starts great (road imagery always works for the boys and with apocalypses "ends" take on new meanings) and then you get to the chorus and I'm like "yeah, Dean, I get it, you're 'ready.'" Just me, I guess. :)
ReplyDeleteAh. Yes, I can see where you are coming from.
ReplyDeleteYep you're right about this being tough.
ReplyDelete1. Really doesn't matter to me - I voted Good Morning pretty much for the heck of it :P
2. Black Water - Probably very unlikely to win against the Christmas song but oh well.
3. Again, same as #1 - But I voted for Ready For Love
4. Ahhh! Don't do this to me! Dear Mr. Fantasy is unrated, but I had to go with Don't Fear The Reaper.
LOL got distracted by a link at the end of the Heat fo the Moment clip that pointed to Jensen and Misha talking about Misha's 15 year old resume.
ReplyDelete1) Heat of the Moment - the point of the song is Deans loving torture of his baby
....brother....and the song plays into that perfectly. for me at any rate. :-D
2) I think both of these are great songs and work great in their scenes. So I had
....to make up reason sto pick one over the other. I decided that Black Water
....was a little on the nose so I picked Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
3) Ready For Love - easy choice. These Boots...feels pointless...I love These Boots
....are Made For Walking, but here....when you're talking about song-to-scene
....pairings....it just fails. Ready For Love really enhanced that scene....that
....melody and Dean's emotional state at this point...the song enhanced the scene
....for me. It's one of the top match ups. I'm a little surprised at the current vote
....though.
4) This one is difficult for me. I was a little surprised to discover that Don't Fear the
....Reaper was really strong for me in context, when I watched the whole episode.
....It wasn't as effective when I watched the snippet stand alone. I decided to pick
....Dear Mr. Fantasy, the juxtaposition of Dean trying to smile and failing and the
....song, when looking at the scene itself...was stronger. So Dear Mr. Fantasy
....got my vote.
"Good Morning" - in my opinion the better fit for the scene when Sam wakes up on the next day was with "Back in time" than "Heat of the Moment".
ReplyDelete"Black Water" - here i would love to see both choices advance, and since this is the one that will not go through, i vote for it.
"Ready for Love" - well even though "These Boots were Made for Walking" is quite fun and the scene is brilliant, the only way that song matches with the line that the boots will walk all over you, and that was about to happen to Crowley, but in my opinion the "Ready for Love" is a better match.
"Don't Fear the Reaper" - not much explanation needed :) but sad to see it compete against "Dear Mr. Fantasy".
Dear Mr. Fantasy has been rolling around in my head all evening. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI do think a song can be too on the nose. But for me the song that happened to was Don't Fear the Reaper.
ReplyDeleteJust to say your describtion of "AVSC was absolutely beautiful, it really moved me. Good job i had my morning coffee to perk me up.
ReplyDeleteX
I'm not a particularly hall-mark person myself but the brothers, when they show their true feelings by understating them, make me melt into goo.
What wasn't said was just every bit as important as what was. It's one of the most moving scenes ever for me and not only on SPN.
Just marvellous, and when I remember who wrote it and what he's giving us now, I can't beiieve it's the same person.
Although i love the Heat of The moment scene, I'm trying to keep in mind that this is a best-fit song to scene contest so I have to go with "Good Morning" as I think it fits its scene better.
ReplyDeleteOf course Lucifer was being sarcastic when he sang it. He well knew that it wasn't a " good morning" wake up call for Sam as the poor guy couldn't ever sleep!
X
No doubts here. "Have Yourself A Merry Little Chrisrmas" was so sad and perfect for that wonderful bitter-sweet scene, "Sigh."
X
"These Boots are made for Walking" I think fits the scene well enough. Castiel was now much more powerful than Crowley and he could definitely use his 'boots' to kick the demon on his way.
X
"Don't fear the Reaper." I thought it was a good combination with what was going on in the scene even although "BlackWater " was pertinent too. I just prefer the Reaper song.
The first one is a lousy decision to make...which song is the lesser of two evils for me. Heat of the Moment won out.
ReplyDeleteSeriously? I chose Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas but Black Water was excellent also.
I chose Ready for Love. The other song is another travesty for this category.
Don't Fear the Reaper was the only real way to go n this one. It fit the scene perfectly.
Also i chose several songs that could be a good fit to use in SPN - the songs "Kashmir", "Immigrant song" and "No quarter" by Led Zeppelin. I think they could be a good fit because of the great guitar riffs, for example the "Immigrant song" could be used in a some sort of fast paced action sequence, whereas the "No quarter" and "Kashmir" are slower in pace, but very powerful riffs, so could be used in other kind of scene. The other suggestions are "High hopes" and "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" by Pink Floyd - a bit different type of music. The "High hopes" could be used where the brothers remember their times when they were kids like everyone else and did not know about the monsters and horrors. The lyrics of this song fit in this case quite well, together with music creating that nostalgic feeling. And "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" - this could be used in the scene to create the mysterious and maybe a bit spooky atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteEverybody here will think I've lost it.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Beefheart - Upon the My O My
It is on You Tube. Please don't be scared.
Good Morning by default, even though I like the scene from Mystery Spot better.
ReplyDeleteHave Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, was an easy pick, this was Sam's real gift to Dean.
Ready for Love, the world is going to end and for me this song worked.
Dear Mr. Fantasy, not crazy about either of these, but this one came closer to what was going on for me.
Oh dang, you put my thoughts about Christmas ep into words PERFECTLY. This is one of my favorite ep.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw that Dean/Misha/resume I laughed until I cried..it was so good.
ReplyDeleteI've never done this before and not sure if it will work but I've tried to upload this image I found today of a supernatural drinking game. Not related to this comp but very funny nonetheless. Hopefully it posts successfully and you guys can see it
ReplyDeleteVery good way to get drunk fast. lol
ReplyDeleteIf i had to pick a perfect song for Spn, it would be one that isn't classic but it feels like it was written about the show. "The Sound of Madness" by Shinedown.
ReplyDelete"I created the sound of madness,
Wrote the book on pain
Somehow i'm still here to explain.
That the darkest hour never comes in the night,
You can sleep with a gun.
When ya gonna wake up and fight... For youself. "
In fact the majority of the songs on this album made me wonder if the band was a fan of the show. :)
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Don't Fear the Reaper are the easiest choices today and if there's justice in this world they'll go to the next round.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning and Ready for Love are also very easy choices but unfortunately I don't see them going anywhere.Truth is,there are other songs that could fit these scenes, but at least they work!Plus,I think I actually nominated Ready for Love..I'm not a huge fan of Anna and Dean(kind of neutral actually) but for some reason I really like the scene with this particular song.
These Boots were Made for Walking and Heat of the Moment are disastrous choices in my opinion.Don't really like the first song,I do like the second but it seems like whoever chooses the songs was just tired, closed his eyes and simply picked a song.
Agreed in triplicate. If Heat of the Moment beats Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas next round, I am giving up on it being a song-to-scene contest. It will just be another favorite scene round. It might as well end up being Heat of the Moment versus Eye of the Tiger then.
ReplyDeleteShinedown is getting a lot of love from my online friends these days. I think they did a great job with the Simple Man cover. I agree that they often remind me of Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteBwah! This is awesome. Thanks for sharing. I agree with CP. Follow this and you'll miss the end of the episode because you'll be passed out on the floor. For kicks, here are the 2 Supernatural drinking game videos I love:

I have to admit I was a little leery about this one but I went to YouTube anyway. It took two takes because I was laughing so hard at the lead singer's obviously drug induced overacting that I spit out my water and had to clean up the keyboard. However once I skipped the video and just listened I could see where you were coming from, especially with the bridge. If In-a-Gadda-da-Vida could become iconic on SPN, this one might just be waiting for the right scene. The instrumentals are awesome and I could see them really fitting in. Hey, we're getting fairies again so....

Oh if only Supernatural could get the rights to Led Zeppelin. They aren't my favorite but they can really rock. There is so much Zeppelin history on the show. It's unlikely SPN will ever get them but what a shame if they never do. Agreed that High Hopes feels nostalgic and is a bit haunting itself.
ReplyDeleteFor someone who constantly eye rolled at Satan in season 5, I found him vastly entertaining and actually diabolical in season 7.
ReplyDeleteThere have only been 2 women I would have been happy for Dean to be with, Anna or Jo, only Sarah for Sam, they were fun together. This should open a can of worms. ;)
ReplyDeleteAgreed that these polls were maddening. Good against good. Non-song-to-scene against each other. Argh! Sometimes I want to chuck the whole ranking thing but then I remind myself it wouldn't be fair. Plus, I wouldn't get to see if others feel the same way or not and that's usually the best conversation.
ReplyDeleteI am really surprised since they use Heat of the Moment so often in the episode that they didn't make a more conscientious decision of what song to choose. They had the chance to really nail this song-to-scene but it seems more like someone went to a karaoke bar and decided whatever was played next would be the song.
ReplyDeleteI am shocked that Ready for Love isn't going to win this round. I thought for sure it would simply because it is in a more recognizable scene if nothing else. So far this is the surprise of the contest for me although I know a bigger shock will be coming.
ReplyDeleteAs far as clip instead of episode goes, I too have found some scenes I adored the music to weren't as effective when taken out of the context of the whole episode. It really surprised me with a couple.
I'm bummed about Dear Mr. Fantasy and Black Water too. They deserved to go much farther in this contest.
ReplyDeleteIt's in my top 10 too. A perfect reminder of the importance of the brother bond and how strong a family they were even in the midst of evil.
ReplyDeleteI too think the brother relationship is best shown through the understated moments. I know most people love those emoangsty over the Impala chats, but for me this scene says a whole lot more even without manly tears. This was the scene most talked about when we heard Jeremy Carver was taking the reins, but like you, I have not seen even a glimmer of the magic of that moment in this whole season. Here's hoping for a return of the brother bond and more fantastic scenes.
ReplyDeleteI feel for you. Someone made a Dido comment on another thread and I've had Here with Me stuck in my head. Ear worms are no fun....well except when they make amusing screencaps.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Ready for Love is a better song-to-scene choice than any of the other sex scenes in the show. Part of it is because it is not your typical love song, because of its melancholy like you said, and Dean and Anna are not your typical one-night-stand. However, when I compare it to say Dear Mr. Fantasy or the editing of Cherish from Season 7 Time for a wedding, it doesn't come close for me. Maybe it's just because I can think of a lot of love songs off the top of my head but I can't think of other song themes near as quickly. Call it a product of living through the power rock ballad years.
Apparently I can either have a second paragraph of text OR a picture so here's the screen cap I tried to include in my other post.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Thanks so much for bringing this topic up again. :-P
ReplyDeleteLOL, these made my day and sent them on.
ReplyDeleteLsketch42 was the first vidder I ever followed. Way before I ever knew YouTube I followed her on an lj list of vidders.
ReplyDelete"I know a bigger shock will be coming" You type these phrases and my eyeballs do a Roger Rabbit thing. :-) Ack! I don't want to know, ahead of time though. So don't tell me but Ack!
ReplyDeleteEar worms can be a lot of fun....if you're the one putting it into someone else's ear. :-)
ReplyDeleteIn the entire series there are only two sex scenes that stick out in my mind. Ready to Love and Sam's in the werewolf episode. I love the music in both but in the context of this contest Ready to Love comes out on top.
Well i was quite happy to hear Led Zeppelin on Revolution, the other Kripke show, and we can only presume, that if Kripke was still in charge of SPN, this chance of hearing LZ on SPN would have been considerably higher, but as You said, the current situation is quite different. And regarding "High Hopes" - i never could have thought of it as being haunting, so that is another interesting opinion about this song :)
ReplyDeleteI subbed yesterday, but noticed it has been a good while since anything new.
ReplyDeleteWatched it a few more times and it's beginning to grow on me. Also found an interview he did with Letterman on You Tube. He's wasted and seeing how Letterman, who rarely gets flustered, was unprepared for this was hilarious. It's about 18 minutes long. I made the first eight, right up to after they played his new video and was complaining MTV wouldn't air it. Audience reaction is great, too.
ReplyDeleteYou may want to cover your keyboard for this one, too.

Ha! You are one of those people. I swear everyone who mentions We are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together to me has been trained by Crowley in hell creation. Every time I get it out of my head it's either on the radio or someone is humming it. Forget Crowley, it's an Alastair special.
