As TV.com's Lily Sparks wrote in her review of The Outsider: "YOWZA! If you want to go on a serious hike but think you might have to do a little pros-tah-tution during your adventure, go with this getup." Can the lovely ladies of OUAT get some more modest outfits? Please!
I'm distracted by her neckline, and I'm a woman. I can only imagine how the guys feel. This is a "family show" (supposedly). I don't want impressionable girls to think this is how they're supposed to dress. But, even if you don't agree with me on modesty in general, you have to admit it is very distracting when Belle, the Evil Queen, and now Jack are running around in these low-cut tops.
I'd be more worried about the messages OUAT puts forward with some of its storylines and topics. They're more questionable than any of the outfits could ever be.
Belle's only worn a cleavagey top once, the Evil Queen is...well, evil (although powerful sexuality shouldn't really be associate with evil) and Jack probably isn't long for this world. It never seems explicit, at least not to me.
Besides, this is a show where people are routinely killed, zombies wander around, people get their limbs ripped off etc. I think some cleavage is fine.
IMO, they actually play down the sexual stuff (awful expression, but I couldn't come up with anything better) all the time. There are endless possibilities to explore it, but they hardly ever go there. It actually is one of the things I'd die to see on screen, even though I'm fully aware it will never happen. If only this was on HBO... Regina wouldn't have a dress wardrobe, she'd sure have a lingerie closet. But I digress. The way I see it, this is a show mostly about women, mother/daughter relationships, empowerment, etc. Having them wear plunging necklines is completely and totally fine if it makes sense with the overall story. So far, I think it does, very much so, and it hasn't bothered me in the slightest.
I have no problem with cleavage. I had a problem with it on Belle. She's never worn anything remotely sexy, so her FTL outfit Lily was mocking was super out of character and ridiculously impractical. In this promo pic, we don't know anything about "jack", maybe it fits. On Regina it is fine because she uses her sexuality as part of her power and doesn't need to do anything athletic--but still a number of the FTL outfits by all are worthy of mockery, and in Lily's defense she hits on all of them not just impractical ladieswear.
What's So nifty about that is that even though "Jack" is also a LOST references, as we saw the "post death" of this character earlier in the season (which the skeletons are reminiscent to Lost's Heart - Cork scenes), but also because most likely in this case, Jack is short for Jacklynn or Jacquelyn...In Alias Arvin Sloan and Emily lost their child in childbirth. They named her Jacquelyn. It's in interesting coincidence since no doubt this character is a Giant-killing assassin. (Jacquelyn is also the French female version of "Jacob"!)
I think since it is also a FANTASY show, they should be aloud to be whimsical. The character's behavior and story is what is more important. Despite how these women (or men in their tight pants) dress, they are VERY strong capable women, but also women with flaws. It's a parent's job to educate their children on what they consider appropriate or innaproriate and to educate them on what they are watching on TV. Because now your making a statement that skin showing = prostitution, where in fact, just because anyone of us may find the clothing or actor "sexually appealing", doesn't mean that's the only message that these women are sending, considering how much they all are struggling, as this show is partially about womans' right of passage and their relationships with their family (if your only concentrating on the image, your missing the point, not to say that image appeal isn't apart of marketing). Additionally sexuality and artistic expression (such as how one may choose to dress) is apart of being human (and historically a part of being a women). I for one am not offended or overly distracted by the clothes. I think they provide a unique Medieval/Renascence feel to the show, going back to some of these stories literary roots. In fact I think they are some of the prettiest takes on fairy-tale-forest people's clothes I have ever scene.
I disagree a little, because Snow and Charming have rather different asthetics in FTL compared to Mary Margerate's and David's bland Storybrooke asthestic (and their cursed personalities were big contrasts too). -When you think about her being paired with Rumple, both of their FTL clothes are a bit more whimsical, while both their Storybrooke clothes are more elegant-classy city clothes.
However, there seems to be a style of clothing specifically for the FTL forest adventure/mission (outside of Snows more fur-trader design) as Regina, Belle, and Jack all seem to where this style when venturing away from the familiar...Personally, I like the way it looks...
Red is a very sexualized character both in fairytales and in the show, but she isn't running around the forest with her boobs shoved into her chin. I don't care either way. But the outfit is a bit inconsistent with the FTL and the Storybrooke Belle we've seen in the past who is pretty conservatively dressed, frumpy even. If the point was that Belle's outfit is what the costume designers have decided is "appropriate" forest adventure attire, then that is pretty funny. Lilly makes fun of Charming and Snow's FTL outfits too and that silly bedsheet Aurora kept roaming about in, even though I liked Charming's fur cape last time round. It was a joke about impracticality and silly costume design of which she makes many (as the costume department on this show is insane). It adds something to the show and they've stuck with it. It was pretty silly that frumpy, dumpy Belle (who didn't even really brush her hair in season 1) was suddenly in the world's most aggressive push-up bra and leather trying to get men to take her seriously. It was completely at odds with the image she wanted people to have of her. I don't think the costume people think of character when they do designs sometimes, which is my only niggle.
Red can't run around with her cleavage showing because Granny wouldn't like it :p (But in Storybrook she shows a lot of leg)
Well for Bell, all I can say is that we only got a glimpse of who Bell was in season 1 and in a short time period, compared to many other characters, so she might show her cleavage more than we think she does. -It's also amusing that the land of Mulan, she would cover herself up to make a masculinity point, and the more European-American characters tend to show cleavage when they go marching around!
Besides they have magic. The have enchanted bras and spells to make sure everything stays in place! ;)
Ew, no to that quote. She looks fine! Let the ladies wear what makes them comfortable. Just because she has a daring neckline doesn't mean she's gonna do some prostituting. I know it's a ~family show and even I, as a female, am distracted by some of the boobalicious necklines, but because I wouldn't wear it doesn't mean the adventure-seeking lady in Fairytale Land shouldn't. The costumes in general on this show are completely stunning.
I guess jack here was using her sexuality approach the giant in order to know vital information about the giant (i.e. where they lives, how to defeat them). But why is the giant normal size in FTL?
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Once Upon A Time is not afraid to show cleavage...
ReplyDeleteHere's my question...we see the skeleton in Anton's treasure room. It makes me wonder if she met a terrible end or she faked her death...
ReplyDeleteUgh I hate that we have to wait so long for Ouat to return... I'm feeling Regina's Rage right about now ;)
ReplyDeleteLooks like she shops at the same place as BA!Belle.
ReplyDeleteMy bb Cassidy!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind :D
ReplyDeleteRandom... Can we have the Charmings have a quiet night at home watching the disney version of Snow white? Sorry couldn't help myself
ReplyDeleteWhich is also the same place Young Queen Regina bought one or two outfits.

You are no fun whatsoever.

Oh jeez. Nothing like some misogyny in the name of 'children'

Yeah how inappropriate of the OUAT women to look sexy. Or of any woman these days.

ReplyDeleteThey took the quote out of context. But just saying, no one is gonna be "comfortable" in that outfit.
ReplyDeleteCassidy Freeman *-* I miss her since Smallville ended.
