Supernatural - Season 8 - Latest from Zap2IT - 3rd December 2012

Thanks to tvmonkey for the heads up.

"Supernatural's" mid-season finales like to leave us with plenty of anxiety to enjoy over the holidays. (Remember the year that Dean was about to tell Sam what John whispered to him on his deathbed, and then the end credits rolled? That was not a merry Christmas in our house.) The final episode of 2012 is no exception; fans can expect the episode to end on a nail-biting cliffhanger for the brothers Winchester.

The episode kicks off with Sam and Dean headed to Louisiana to investigate vampire killings, which Sam believes are linked to Benny. Suffice to say that Dean isn't particularly thrilled to learn that Sam asked their old hunter friend Martin Creaser to track Benny. Yes, the same Martin who we last saw in a mental institution back in Season 5, after hunting became too much for him to bear. In fact, Martin's history of crazy is exactly what made him the man for the job, according to executive producer Jeremy Carver.

"He was something of a really great character. We really loved him, and you've got certain points in this episode where the quote-unquote 'crazy guy' might be the sanest guy in the room," Carver tells us. "He's dropped into a situation where you've got the Winchester brothers literally arguing about how they're going to essentially deal with monsters in a way that he's never heard hunters discuss monsters before. The idea of Dean having a relationship with this thing is so far from Martin's understanding. In a weird way the guy who has had [mental] issues in the past lends a bit of balance to the episode, and, frankly, an element of unpredictability as well."

Martin becomes convinced that Benny is responsible for the bodies that have been piling up in his Louisiana hometown, where Benny has landed a job at a diner. Sam's feelings about Benny are pretty clear -- but Dean asks the other hunters to hold off on taking action until he can check in on his friend.

  8. Jenuary 9th??That's not that bad!!!Btw...Couldn't they pick another hunter???I could care less about Martin. He was no character worth bringing back IMO.

  9. Like who? Not much hunters to choose from and I rather have Martin than Garth.

  10. Garth is busy babysitting the Trans

  11. Really? Martin is looking like the bright spot of the episode to me. He was a likable character and may ground the episode enough to keep it from spilling into a soap opera land. I'm neutral about Benny and don't care about him yet, so there's no tension there. I'm not looking forward to seeing Sam and Dean fight - especially about a conflict that feels anything but natural especially since the show has done nothing to give us any kind of understanding of Sam's perspective in this.

  12. Huh! I absolutely loved Martin the first time around. I never forgot about him. I just assumed that the show-runners sadly had. I was excited to see he was coming back.

  13. DVRs are the best thing since sliced bread. Congrats on the honeymoon, but think I would have to find a place that was showing SPN. lol

  14. I liked Martin, just hope he does not go off the rails and gets his self killed.

  15. I know that. I was just trying to say there is not a lot of options for hunters to bring back.

  16. was I the only one who read that as the boys seperating at the end of the episode? I got the impression they would be apart for a while basically episode 10 seince we already know they're hunting together in episode 11.

  18. This episode is going to be great going to leave us with the excitement for the return from vacation whether it will solve the problems between dean and sam

  19. idk, i think martin was a good pick because he is a subtle callback to a lot of pre-season 8 character points and allows a shorthand for growth and conclusions of arcs. just take sam for example, though this works for both dean and castiel as well for different reasons.

sam was hunting throughout his battles with mental issues and crumbling mental stability/health in season 7. sam in season 8 seems to have had a break down and then ran from the fallout. sam's break downs came from supernatural causes and are tied closely to the hunting life.

that martin becoming unwell due in part to the job (hunting) is a subtle yet poignant mirroring of sam's problems and, depending on the level to which they further explore martin as he is now, plays well into the idea that you could ever really make it out "sane" in that lifestyle. martin wanting to continue hunting is both a callback to s7 and a contrast to s8 sam.

it also allows the viewers to get a direct on screen comparison to how sam handled hunting while battling with mental health issues and how your "average" hunter does so. and the negative/positive effects from their coping mechanisms while doing so.

  20. WOW I really hope Benny lives. Before the season started, I was nervous about how his character was going to factor into the story, but now I love him. He's such a great independent operator. I'd love to have him around and on the boys' side, as an insider to the world of monsters -- which they may need to actually team up with, in order to banish all the demons of the world back to Hell, they way the tablet instructs. I guess my wish list for this year is 1) Cas lives, and stays with the brothers, at least part-time 2) Benny lives and works with the brothers at least part-time, and 3) Jody Mills and Charlie make a very powerful return and save the day alongside the brothers. PLEASE.

  21. I don't care about Benny. He doesn't do anything for me and I don't find him interesting at all, but I am so sick of the drama he is causing and it does make we wish that he would just go away. He wasn't involved in the last two episodes and it was like a breath of fresh air. No pointless drama (except for Don's suddenly alive! Yuck. And Amelia becoming even less appealing with her father making her out to be a goddess. Has her dad even met how nasty and unethical his daughter is?) So, I'm not excited for Benny or Amelia.

I still am having a TON OF ISSUES with the forced drama of the season. I will never be able to buy that Sam didn't look for Dean. NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS. But I am seriously going to be angry if Sam and Dean separate in this episode, because if you are going to say that because the fans hate it when Sam and Dean are separate and that's why you are telling the season in flashbacks and then create the worst forced OCC drama (that threatens the foundation of the show) AND THEN SEPARATE THE CHARACTERS FOR THE WINTER CLIFF-HANGER! That's a serious foul and beyond-crappy move to pull.

(The show could have had a couple episodes like "Time After Time" and really done something new and added a lot of character relationship to start the season, but instead we get flashback to avoid separating the brother. Yet, the brothers are still being driven apart.)

So, the show better not start changing it's tune and separate Sam and Dean for the sake of contrived melodrama for this cliffhanger. I'm just going to be so upset if they go that route, because I feel like the fans were blamed for why Sam and Dean weren't separated and they decided that making it so Sam didn't look for Dean would add to the drama since they couldn't have the brothers apart. If they change it so they brothers can be separated, then why did we have to start the season off by destroying the brothers' relationship. It would have been much more interesting and the audience would have been much more emotionally invested in watching Sam and Dean fight to get back to each other than trying to make sense out of Sam not looking for Dean.

I'm still waiting for Carver to pull everything together, but I'm losing hope. This episode shows promise, but so far the only thing that sounds good is Martin.

  22. I mostly agree. I don't see all of the fuss over Benny. He's a great guest, but so aren't a lot of the guests they've had, including Jewel Staite. At this point he's just a couple of scenes above monster of the week. As for them separating, if the cameras would actually follow Sam for a change, and Sam has an interesting story to be told, then I could get behind it. I'm mostly tuning out the din in the fandom lately anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't understand what people see in Benny, but it could be something as simple as I'm not getting pass the brothers' conflict to see it. Maybe once the season is over I'll get it, but until then I find him to be just another vampire except he doesn't have the charm Damon and Spike have or the dark history Angel and Stefan have. But we'll see.

I can see if us following Sam if the brothers do separate could be different. That would definitely be different from last season separation, but since the show rarely shows Sam when they are separated or Sam's POV, I'm not sure they would do something that extremely different. I might enjoy that better than the brothers simply separating, but as much as I would love Sam's POV and watching an interesting story for him, I'm still not okay with the brothers separating out of anger. (Plus, this season has been lacking for Sam's POV and interesting story, so that didn't even cross my mind when I thought about the possibility of the brothers separating, so I don't know if I would feel like it was set up right.)

However, with the next episode (8x10) being a Castiel episode ( which has always meant in the past that it will feature more Dean than Sam in the episode) I suspect it will be Dean that we'll follow if the brothers separate for the episode and they'll have the interesting story that connects to mythology, while Sam is off elsewhere. So, I rather not have the brothers separate and have another wonderful Team Free Will episode. (I would love to have more for Sam and Castiel's relationship, but I think it's time to accept the writers have no interest in expanding their relationship further. Which is a shame, because I think it was Sam who really got through to Cas last week even though he was speaking to Fred and it would be interesting to get a follow-through.)

But I really can't get behind any version of the brothers being separated due to conflict. If it was because they were needed elsewhere or they had to be apart, then I could get behind it. However, if it just they brothers are apart because they are fighting over pointless forced stuff, then I'm still left with the question of why not start the season with the brothers fighting to get back to each other?

  24. If Martin dies, I won't care so for that reason I'm good. I'm still waiting to hear about the briefly seen Mackie again, the one who told Dean about Immanuel. He seemed like good people.

  25. Sheriff Jody tops my return wish list, even higher than Charlie. With Benny I hope that 1) he isn't evil and 2) he lives.

  28. Thank you so much for this great post.
The fact that Sam didn't look for Dean has soured the whole season and the contrived drama between the brothers is horrible.

Then if you want to give Sam a love interest, at least give him someone like Jess who was sweet, treated him as a person and obviously loved him.

Dean had Lisa, and whether one liked her or not, she was respectful and understanding of what he had gone through.
Then yes, it would have been wonderful to see Sam and Dean fighting to get back to one another. I so wish they had done that.

  29. So it is going to be an emotional episode, Martin is the sane one and Benny and Sam don't have many or any scenes together.

Does that mean Dean goes off with Benny to do the grunt work Sam soul searches with Martin and has flashbacks to Don turning up and spoiling his time with Amelia before Martin chops Benny's head off?..

Oh whoopie, if that is the case. More Sam and Amelia, just what I don't want. What happened to the promised PTSD with Dean? Am I going to have to watch Homeland and rewatch the hurt locker to get that explored?
