Awesome! Vast improvements over the past 2 seasons (which I didn't hate nearly as much as some fans). There were some blights of the season including: Louis, Quinn, and Batista.
But Jennifer Carpenter came out and knocked it out of the park all season long, Deb's whole progression this season (particularly in the first half) was marvelous to watch. Michael C Hall was great as always. Ray Stevenson as Isaak was very entertaining to see, very charismatic bad guy and was kind of sad to see him go. And I liked Yvonne Strahovski as Hannah this season, curious if she'll be involved next season at all. Oh and LaGuerta finally died so that automatically made it awesome.
Good job Dexter. I'm not sure where this falls in my order of favorite seasons, but its definitely up there with the best (1, 2, and 4).
Couldn't agree more. Especially about the characters and actors. Isaak and Hannah. But Jennifer/Deb was the best. Really brilliant. For Michael/Dex it wasn't surprising. He was always brilliant. But Jennifer … Especially, when you compare her to Deb in S1.
With one word: perfect Good story, interesting twists and surprises. Extraordinary performance by the cast, especially Jennifer. Interesting and strong characters, like Hannah and Isaak. Will be hard to beat next season.
I loved the season, but wasn't that thrilled with the finale. I want to give it a rewatch before I cut loose, but there was something within the construct of it that was unsatisfying and it's a hard thing for me to pin point at the moment, because at the same time some of the lines and exchanges were perfect. I especially liked what Hannah McKay had to say to Deb about hypocrisy...
What I do like about the season was in a way it was more about Deb than Dexter. It almost was like the writers gave us a psychological manual on how two close people can become Bonnie and Clyde...
But at the same time, as we keep going, the plots become looser and looser and the reality much more ridiculous...as characters are changing perceptions, roles, and characteristics in rather dramatic ways.
I think Isaak was one of the best antagonists we ever had, and although I miss Lumen and she'll probably always be my favorite non regular, Hannah was a real delight and I hope for once the character will reappear and tie into Dexter's final season(s) somehow.
Over all the cast was fantastic, even though some of the characters were put on the back burner. It was super twisty fun and in no way completely predictable! I'm anxious for news on season 8!
I loved the build up for the finale. I loved the conflicts Deb had all season trying to come to grips with her duty as a police officer and her duty to her brother.
Have you people seen seasons 1-4? There is no way this season was even close to those. The writing was poor and was frankly boring at times. The first 4 episodes and the last 2 were good but the Hannah storyline was just not that compelling, they killed off Isaak too soon, and they botched what could have been another great storyline with Lewis. Oh and don't get me started on Quinn. That was a waste of a season arc. I liked it overall but it is in the bottom 3 of seasons in my opinion.
I still say season 4 was incredibly overrated. The beginning of the season was good and the end was, the middle dragged on.
I think this season also needs to be looked at in the context of being the beginning of the end. Every story arc either enforced or branched off of the increasingly complex Dexter/Deb relationship (With the exception of Quinn, he replaces LaGuerta as the most useless character), they're bound more closely than every before yet further apart than ever.
I really hated that ending. With one season left, I was hoping they'd put some huge twist in their... but nope, Deb catches Dex again and we'll likely get a replica of the first part of this season for next season. Where Deb is struggling to cope with it all.
I just wish the show had some balls and had Dex on the run. :3
Season 4 is one o my LEAST favorite seasons. It felt very forced to me and was only saved by the strong performance of the guest stars.
I preferred Season 5 and this year I think honestly since they showed real evolution in Dexter's character. If they were not better they were at least equal to Season 4.
Agree completely on how this year needs to be viewed. It is the beginning of Act III.
I love seeing the gradual improvements in an actor or actresses' career. Anna Torv from Fringe comes to mind. Yes, comparing Deb from Season 1 to Deb now, marvelous transformation. I wouldn't doubt that it comes in part from Jennifer Carpenter growing along with the role.
Thanks but I'm aware of what Buffy is about, I've seen quite a few episodes of Angel which I believe is a spin off.
Haha, sorry to disappoint, or surprise I guess, but no I'm 23. So I would've been able to watch it on TV when it aired, I just never did. But going back to the whole 15/16 thing, I don't know if I should be insulted or not after our discussions about Dexter. Nah, I'm just messing. And thanks for the warning on Season 1, I'll keep that in mind that it does improve upon itself.
Yes, it's a spin of. But it's a bit darker than Buffy.
23? Then you were 8 or 9 when Buffy started. I knew it: too young J
Ever watched the original movie? If you haven't: Don't. It was … well, let's say I watched it once and never again. The movie is the reason the show had a bad prognosis. No one believed it would live pass S1. That's the reason S1 had only 12 eps, so it won't take long to watch it. With S2 it gets better.
Ah that's another good thing to keep in mind: Buffy isn't as dark as Angel.
Psh, I was watching r-rated movies and worse stuff than Buffy before I was 8 or 9, so definitely not too young to watch. But that's interesting that people had lower expectations for the show based off of the movie (haven't seen it). Is it like 12/13 episode seasons for Season 2+, or do they jump to the norm of 22/24 episodes?
Honey, I watch Stephen King since I'm 10. It and Pet sematary.
R-rated movies? What is that? Never heard of it, sorry. And where were your parents? Coming from me? I watched It with MY parents. I was 10.
The problem with the Buffy original movie wasn't that it was so horrifying, it's just one of the worst movies. Average quality of performance, poorly told story, actors that were 15 years too old for their parts, … People didn't reacted well on it, that is why no one believed the show would be a success.
You haven't seen it? Good. Don't waste your time.
No, just the first season has 12 eps. All the others have 22.
Surprisingly, as a guy who enjoys horror movies, I have not seen Pet Sematary. But I have seen It, that was pretty freaky as a kid. Halloween a bit, less so with Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street.
My dad watched r-rated movies with me, horror movies, action movies, comedy movies, whatever. My dad didn't really care what I watched as long as it was alright with me, like if I got too scared or something or didn't like it, then we wouldn't watch it.
And was Buffy cancelled in the end? Or did it get to have a true conclusion?
I'm into horror and fantasy too. It's so hard to pick a movie with my friend. She's no friend of horror. My ex was great about that. He loved those old horror movies, Freddy and Jason were always on top of his list. I'm more into monsters.
You know what's funny? My parents didn't care if I watch King with them. But if I wanted to stay up after 10, they freaked and wouldn't listen. Well, the crew signed up for 5 seasons and it had a real end. But fans wanted more. So another network took Buffy and made 2 more seasons. And yes, they finished it properly.
Although I greatly love season 4, I also love season 5 (and is someone who appreciates season 6) ...I think S4 is really when the fate aspect of the series starts to really come together and brings those elements from the first 3 seasons together in a way, that like Darque was somewhat saying, through the villain, rather than through Dexter. I really think that series relies on season 1, and so after this season I would say that 1, 5, and 7 are my favorites, with 4, 6, 2 being constructively important seconds, and with season 3 just being my least favorite story wise. -But I can understand why someone would think s4 is over rated...but I think each season tries to find a way to change perspectives of how any one character could be viewed, like seeing different layers of an onion, which I find unique.
One of my favorite seasons ever. I loved how it became so much about deter/deb reationship and how every secondary storyline had some purpose for this. And there was so much going on. Also, I loved Hannah, she is by far my favorite romantic interest for dexter on the show (although if the writers wanted to be really bold they could have went with isack for this, yet another awesome thing about the season). I would rank them like this: - Season 4
- Season 7
- Season 2
- Season 5
- Season 1
- Season 6
- Season 3
(The Lyla part of season 2 was not one of my favorites, it dragged on a bit too much, so that is why it is not higher... i loved the BHB storyline. Also, I find season 5 to be vastly underrated around here, I really liked that season, it's sort of a tie with season 1 (which I admit I haven't watched in a long time, maybe it should be higher)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

Have to agree, but also say that even "bad" seasons of Dexter surpass so much else on TV it puts them to shame.

How is Deb committing murder not a huge twist?

ReplyDeleteGrowing with the role always helps. You can (for example) compare Sarah as Buffy in S1 and S7.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I haven't seen Buffy but I have been intrigued to see it for a while now, perhaps I'll bump it up on my list of shows to watch.
ReplyDeleteIt's a horror/sci-fi show mixed with teen comedy and some drama. Nothing special: vampires, demons, witches, apocalypse, …
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, but how could you not watch Buffy? How old are you? 15? 16? Then you'd be too young to watch it on TV.
If you'll watch it, here a warning: S1 is kinda weak. With S2 it gets better, so don't give up.
Thanks but I'm aware of what Buffy is about, I've seen quite a few episodes of Angel which I believe is a spin off.
