AMC GREENLIGHTS "LOW WINTER SUN" TO FULL SERIES ORDER

New York, NY - December 14, 2012 - AMC today announced a series order for the pilot "Low Winter Sun," a co-production between Endemol Studios and AMC Studio. Chris Mundy ("Criminal Minds," "Cold Case") will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner on the project, which stars Mark Strong ("Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy" "Zero Dark Thirty") and co-stars Lennie James ("The Walking Dead," "Jericho," "Snatch"). Season one consists of ten, one-hour episodes.

"Endemol and Chris Mundy have produced a beautiful pilot with an incredible cast led by the insanely talented Mark Strong," said Joel Stillerman, AMC's EVP of original programming, production and digital content. "We're thrilled to be moving forward with this compelling and intense new drama and look forward to returning to Detroit for production on the first season."

A contemporary story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption in a world where the line between cops and criminals is blurred, "Low Winter Sun" begins with the murder of a cop by a fellow Detroit detective. Seemingly the perfect crime, in reality the murder activates forces that will forever alter the detective's life, and pull him into the heart of the Detroit underworld. The series is based on the 2006 award-winning British two-part mini-series of the same name written by Simon Donald and produced by Tiger Aspect Productions (an Endemol Company). In addition to Mundy, Jeremy Gold, head of creative affairs for Endemol Studios, oversees the project with Greg Brenman, head of drama for Tiger Aspect. The project is represented by CAA.

AMC's pilot, the "Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project" will remain in consideration for a potential series pick-up in 2013.

AMC's Stillerman, Susie Fitzgerald, SVP of scripted development and current programming, and Jason Fisher, SVP of production, oversee "Low Winter Sun" for the network.

  2. another cop/detective/murder show? seriously? AMC you once again disappoint me. where are innovative shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead?

  3. I don't usually watch these kinds of shows but I'm gonna check this out just because of the nice title!

  4. I can't wait for this,so excited!

  5. Too slow, once again :(, although you should have seen my draft created prior to this post, Andy :p.

I wouldn't have necessarily checked out the show had it been on a network, but it's on AMC, the "Detroit underworld" part intrigues me, and Strong / James are reliable actors.

Now I'd have much prefered if AMC had greenlit mystery drama Area 51. Given the success of TWD, I cannot imagine AMC doesn't want to have another fantasy series (widely different though). It's still in contention for a pickup next year, same for the Lagrevenese/Goldwyn pilot (political drama taking place at a Philly law firm).

AMC has to start planning for the future, with Breaking Bad ending in 2013 and Mad Men in 2014. Securing third seasons to The Killing and Hell on Wheels is a first step, and the second one is the pickup of this new show — another remake, btw, that's the third after The Prisoner (starring Lennie James) and The Killing.

  6. My thoughts EXACTLY!

  7. This plot kind of reminds me of The Shield. Which is a good thing I suppose!

  8. Incredible cast on an incredible channel gives me high hopes for this one!

It appears to have those very nuanced and ambiguous characters that AMC is notorious for having like Walter White , Jessie Pinkman and Don Draper.

It seems like the perfect landscape for AMC's next great drama and they needs a new series since Breaking Bad is ending and Mad Men will be done soon too in all likelihood.

  9. YEah that would not be such a bad thing! XD

It also really reminds me of a project Lennie James did this year on BBC called 'Line of Duty' where he plays a cop that may cross into the grey area while making arrests, but one action he takes draws him into a downward spiral. One of the better BBC mini-series in years.

  10. Oh god, I can only hope it's an improvement over The Killing (and to that extent, AMC's other recent show Hell on Wheels; both of which are utter crap in terms of writing/acting)

  11. Ahhhhhhh.....No wonder why Morgan is getting killed off so fast in TWD.....Lennie James has a new show.... good for him....☺.....

  12. Lennie James? Damn, was hoping for him to come back to Walking Dead. That show needs more central characters.

  13. yes Lennie James is coming back to TWD in Epi 12....but he gets bitten right away and dies....he was seen filming epi 12 a few months ago......i guess he needed the time to film his new series so he couldnt stay too long in TWD...☺....

  14. It says it starts with a murder, but it doesn't sound like a "crime show" to me! The "pulled into the heart of the Detroit underworld" thing sounds like something similar to Breaking Bad. Shows like Dexter and Awake are/were about cops too, but they are/were pretty great. :D

  15. You are right. I loved Awake and miss it so much. Guess we will soon find out :-)

  16. Very intriguing; I usually follow most AMC shows. I also like the idea of a show set in Detroit, and I really liked Lennie James on both Jericho and the Walking Dead. Don't know if I'll love this show, but I'll check it out.
